According to Moongiant.com, a full moon on Halloween happens an average of just once every 18 or 19 years.

That means Halloween celebrants will likely only witness a full moon on Halloween five times every century. Student-Athlete Recognized For Leadership

Connetquot High School senior Morgan Elliott was recently presented with the first Tim Bassett Leadership Award by nonprofit organization Athletes Helping Athletes.

Elliott earned this award due to her unique ability

to utilize the life skills she has developed through sports and for exhibiting the characteristics of a true team player. Elliott also ranks in the top 6% of the senior class, has been a member of the varsity track and basketball

teams, and has committed to attend Stony Brook University in fall 2021.

Connetquot Central School District proudly congratulates Elliott on her achievements.

Said Tecumseh Elementary School Social Worker Jennifer Shanahan, “This was a great introduction to make mask wearing appealing and it really put a positive light on it.”

The school nurse participated in the lesson by demonstrating the correct way to wear a mask, how to handle it, how to fold it when you put it down, and then gave a hand washing lesson.

Said Shanahan, “We told them the golden rule, either count for 20 seconds when you wash or

sing Happy Birthday three times. So our students now model that behavior.”

They closed the lesson with a coloring activity where students created their own masks.

“The staff thought the lesson was great but more importantly, we are very proud of our students for complying with mask wearing from the get go,” Shanahan said.

Tecumseh Elementary School is an Eastern Suffolk BOCES school that provides special education services to students with special needs.

Superheroes, of course.

The social workers at Tecumseh Elementary School presented a lesson at the beginning of the school year, utilizing this superhero theme to teach students about health and safety, which included the proper way to wear face masks and wash their hands.

During the first week of school, all students were shown a video of one of the school social workers found on YouTube emphasizing the importance of wearing a mask and reminding viewers that superheroes do so too. To underscore this message, the social workers created a large bulletin board in a main hallway featuring many popular superheroes who wear masks and drew their own masks on those who normally don’t have one.

Kyle was among 16,000 students in the nation selected for their exceptional performance on the 2019 Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSA/ NMSQT) and potential for success in rigorous college studies.

“Our district is ecstatic to recognize Kyle for his outstanding academic achievement and celebrate his advancement in the National Merit Scholarship program,” said Dr. Roberta Gerold, Superintendent of Middle Country Central School District. “Kyle is a phenomenal representation of the work ethic and

Kyle, a well-rounded individual, is involved in a number of MCCSD’s extracurricular activities and clubs. He’s an active member

of the following clubs: environmental, robotics, foreign language, debate, social sciences, and book club. He’s also been involved in the district’s orchestra for the last 10 years, the fencing team for three years, and the Foreign Language Honor Society for two years.

“I’m very grateful for this amazing award, but it would be amiss of me to forget who and what got me here,” said Kyle. “I wouldn’t have been able to do this without my friends and family, and to them, I’m always grateful for what they do to help.”

After Kyle completes the next steps in the program—which includes a recommendation from a high school official and the completion of a comprehensive essay—he will have the chance to be selected among 15,000 students for the Finalist level. Finalists will be notified in February 2021.

How to Safely Trick-or-Treat this Halloween Amid the COVID-19 Pandemic

2. Go trick-or-treating in small groups.

3. Parents and kids should always wear their masks while walking in the neighborhood, as well as when you open the door to hand out candy.

4. Not allowing (older) kids to go out unsupervised.

5. Consider organizing your route. Talk to friends and neighbors and have a preset signal. For example, outside lights means kids know this is a home you can stop at for trick-or-treating.

6. Only wrapped candies or treats.

7. Some families may elect to leave a few treats on their outside stoop of their home.

If that is the case, then remind kids to only take one!

8. No parties!

9. You can leave a bucket or wear a mask and use hand sanitizer when handing out treats. No crowding at the door is important.

10. Pre-organize the route.

“Parents can work to make trick-or-treating safe. It will take some extra preparation and thinking,” said Dr. Nachman. “Kids can have a good time. It will just look different from past years but that’s fine.”

Like many days that came before it in 2020, Election Day figures to be unique this year. The global COVID-19 pandemic has changed many aspects of life as people know it, and it figures to change how they vote this fall as well.

The right to vote and participate in a representative government should never be taken for granted. Many people across the globe have no such right, so citizens of the United States should be grateful they can vote and express that gratitude by doing their part and voting each year on Election Day. State and local governments may be approaching Election Day differently as they try to juggle their responsibilities to make voting accessible to all while simultaneously keeping voters safe during the pandemic. Voters can do their part by taking the following steps prior to Election Day, which is November 3, 2020.

• Confirm you are registered to vote. Voter registration deadlines

differ by state. According to Vote.org, some states, including Colorado and Connecticut, allow eligible voters to register on Election Day and cast their ballots that very same day, but many states, such as Alaska, Hawaii and Louisiana, require voters to be registered 30 days prior to Election Day. A list of state-by-state voter registration requirements can be found at www.vote. org/voter-registrationdeadlines/.

• Learn the mail-in ballot policy in your state.

Many voters may not vote via mail-in ballots on a typical Election Day, but 2020 is not a typical year.

The NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. notes that all states offer some form of mailin ballots. Many states are asking voters to vote via mail-in ballots in 2020 in an effort to reduce voters’ risk of getting and spreading the COVID-19 virus. Confirm the mail-in ballot policy and procedure in your state as early as possible to make sure your vote is counted.

• Return your completed mail-in ballot as soon as possible. Many states are urging voters who plan to vote using mail-in ballots to return their ballots as early as possible. In a mailer sent to all registered voters, the Superintendent of Elections and the Board of Elections in New Jersey noted it is critical that voters return their mailin ballots early in the upcoming election season.

Mail-in ballots can be returned via the United States Postal Service (all ballots include postage paid return envelopes), and voters also may be able to return their ballots in person at their designated polling locations or by placing the ballots in secure ballot drop boxes.

Confirm your mail-in ballot return options with your local County Clerk of Elections well before Election Day. Election Day 2020 will be unique. Voters should not hesitate to take all necessary steps in advance of November 3 to ensure their votes are counted this fall.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued new guidelines on how to celebrate Halloween safely. The agency grouped Halloween activities into low, moderate and highrisk buckets with traditional door-to-door trick-ortreating making the top of the higher-risk activities for spreading COVID-19. The guidelines come one week after Governor Andrew Cuomo said he wouldn’t formally ban trick-ortreating this year, but said he won’t necessarily encourage parents to take kids door-todoor either.

For those who do plan to head out this October, Sharon Nachman, MD, Chief of the Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital has some tips for families on how to safely trick-or-treat on Halloween during the pandemic.

Though apples are enjoyed across the globe, many people associate apples with the United States of America. That’s in spite of the fact that the first apples were cultivated on the opposite side of the world from North America in Asia.

There are more than 7,500 known cultivars of apples that produce various characteristics for flavor and appearance.

Apples are often a topic of discussion in the fall, when many trees produce their largest bounties of fruit.

Autumn is a good time of year to take a closer look at apples, and explore some of the most popular varieties for picking and eating.

Apple Origins Malus deomestica, or the common apple tree, is a descendent of apple trees that originated in Central Asia in what is now southern Kazakhstan.

Apples have been grown for thousands of years in Asia and Europe. The original apple tree was the wild apple, or Malus sieversii. DNA analysis has confirmed that the wild apple is the progenitor of the cultivated apple enjoyed today.

European colonists likely brought apple seeds and trees with them when they emigrated to North America, introducing that part of the world to the

apple tree. Records from the Massachusetts Bay Company indicate that apples were being grown in New England as early as 1630. Americans also enjoy the popular story of Johnny Appleseed, who was believed to have distributed apple seeds and trees to settlers across the United States.

While apples can be produced from seeds, nowadays many apples are propagated by grafting so that they retain the parent tree’s characteristics of flavor, hardiness and insect resistance.

Apples and Symbolism Apples have become the main symbols of many different stories and tales throughout history. Apples are linked to the Biblical tale of Adam and Eve and their ultimate expulsion from the Garden of Eden.

However, the apple is never named in any of the religious texts as the fruit Eve picked from the tree of knowledge.

Apples have appeared in fairy tales and folklore.

The Brothers Grimm had the character “Snow White” fall ill after eating a poisoned apple. In Norse mythology, the goddess Iounn was the appointed keeper of golden apples that kept the Aesir young forever.

Apples have also played a role in science, most

notably Sir Isaac Newton’s study of gravity. While myth surrounds the story of Newton and an apple falling from a nearby tree, it’s likely that witnessing an apple fall from a tree did spark something in the famed scientist.

What Is Herd Immunity?

Infectious diseases can strike at any time. Some of them cause relatively minor interruptions to daily life and often can resolve of their own accord when the body’s immune system mounts a successful defense. Other diseases can cause serious, even lifethreatening symptoms or spread rapidly, which makes it essential for medical professionals to help slow down or stop the transmission.

There are two ways that herd immunity can occur.

The first is when resistance develops naturally when the body is exposed to the virus or bacteria. At this point, the immune system will produce antibodies to fight off the infection. After recovery, these antibodies are still circulating, and should exposure to the same disease occur again, the body can defend against another infection.

Another way that herd immunity occurs is through vaccination. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that when the majority of people are vaccinated, it creates the same disease lockdown - fewer people get sick and fewer germs are able to spread from person to person. What’s more, even those who are not vaccinated, such as newborn babies or those who may not be able to get vaccinated due to chronic illnesses, will get some level of protection because the disease will not be spreading as readily within their communities.

What Is Herd Immunity?

Herd immunity is a term that often arises in relation to infectious diseases.

Herd immunity has taken on renewed significance as the world has been battling COVID-19, the novel coronavirus introduced in late 2019. Herd immunity, which is sometimes called “community immunity,” “population immunity” or “social immunity,” refers to the indirect protection from infectious diseases that occurs when a large percentage of the population has become immune to that disease.

This reinfection mystery is what makes herd immunity - both through a vaccine or through natural exposure - challenging for epidemiologists in relation to COVID-19.
