Hollyrock Brain Challenge

onnetquot Central School District’s Edith L. Slocum Elementary School recently ushered in the new school year by hosting “Hollyrock Brain Challenge,” an interactive game show in which students were challenged to answer history questions, recognize their numbers and letters, dance, hula hoop, jump rope and test their strength in a tug-of-war competition. Students were divided into two groups and assigned teachers as team captains.

Long Island’s largest food drive event, the 7th Annual Bethpage Turkey Drive to benefit Island Harvest Food Bank, will take place on Wednesday, November 18th, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Bethpage Federal Credit Union’s headquarters located at 899 South Oyster Bay Road in Bethpage.

Long Islanders are asked to drop off frozen turkeys, non-perishable food items (except those in glass containers), supermarket gift cards or cash donations. These donations will go directly to Island Harvest which will then help supply Thanksgiving holiday meals to the more than 300,000 hungry Long Islanders through its distribution network of 570 food pantries, soup kitchens and other feeding programs on Long Island.

What does a fish have to do to maintain a steady feeding schedule? Sometimes it’s twice a day, sometimes once… four flakes, five… sometimes only a couple when I knock the rest down to the gravel with my fins, never to be seen again.

Sort of like the Mets and their quest for the World Series. I haven’t been around long, but I hear this is a pretty rare occurrence. Me, I tend to root for the Marlins.

Us fish gotta stick together, after all. But, I suppose I’m a New Yorker, officially. Maybe my Human will buy me some blue and orange gravel so I can root, root, root for the home team…you know, on our trip to the pet store that I’ve been promised since August.

First off, I want to apologize for the morbidity already displayed one sentence into this essay. If you’re looking to read about average summer vacation stories, or the day someone won their first trophy, I would advise you to stop reading. I don’t write this to receive sob stories from countless people, or even gain sympathetic condolences. I just want to put life into perspective. I want to inform you readers of the true and raw meaning of life, and what many people have forgotten over the years while in the midst of everyday life.

The pursuit of happiness is defined as a fundamental right mentioned in the Declaration of Independence to freely pursue joy and live life in a way that makes you happy. I think many people

have forgotten this idea, and it saddens me to feel the need to write this, informing people on how to truly live.

I lost a dear friend of mine recently. She was a family friend, but I definitely considered her family - like an aunt. She was diagnosed with cancer about a year ago, and it only took a few months for the cancer to completely demolish her body. It’s not fair how she died so suddenly and irrationally. Life works mysteriously like that. I can’t quite put into words the feelings I encountered the day she died.

But that’s a whole other story. One regret I have whilst she was still alive was not laughing and smiling a little bit more when I was still in her presence.

I’m a glass half full type of person. I like to see things in positive perspectives. Life is way too short to be anything but happy.

In my eyes, if you have a roof over your head and food on the table, you’re lucky. The countless complaints that our society has adapted to consider “normal” is absurd… Now, I’m not going to lie and say I’ve never complained before. Hell, I probably complain a little too much. But luckily, I have the decency to step back and view the bigger picture in terms of the pursuit of happiness and pure joy and all of that cheerful nonsense.

Live a little. Don’t let the little things bring you down. Be grateful for family and love and joy and laughter and all that good stuff that doesn’t cost a penny. Happiness is a free commodity. Only God knows when your life is coming to an end, so take advantage of every day. Say your “I love you’s” and give your biggest hugs and don’t regret a thing. Life is way too short - I can’t stress this enough.

KAPS FOR KIDS - Local Long Island based submarine veterans made one of four yearly visits to pediatric patients at Good Samaritan Hospital. As part of their “Kaps 4 Kids” program, the veterans visit children’s units in local hospitals where they share the history of their battalion. Bridge Run a Success

Mercy Center held its fifth annual run/walk over the bridge for homeless teens at Smith Point Park on Saturday, October 17th.

Participants from all over the Island came out to support the cause and enjoy the beautiful and unique 3.1 mile course over the bridge. The most senior runner was 79 and the youngest was 6; both belong to the running club North Country Road Warriors. They were among 20 other club members who came this year to run and walk the event.

The Warriors, who hail from the north fork between Port Jeff and Wading River, travel everywhere for great races and support this event wholeheartedly each year.

Sponsorships of all levels for the race made the day possible. EW Howell Construction Co. takes the top sponsor spot every year and encourages partners and affiliates to join in support, resulting in the events costs being fully covered.

November was designated as National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month by President Ronald Reagan in 1983. Since then, the recognition was enhanced to also honor the Caregivers who aid Alzheimer’s patients. In honor of this national event, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC) is reminding everyone that nearly 60,000 Long Islanders suffer from the disease each day.

Alzheimer’s disease is a degenerative brain condition that affects cognitive function and consequently the ability to perform day to day tasks.

At the time of President Reagan’s designation, fewer than two million Americans suffered from the disease. Today, that number has soared to more than 5.4 million people. Alzheimer’s care can be very costly both for patients and their families, who often serve as the primary caregivers. There are presently more than 15 million people caring for Alzheimer’s and dementia patients throughout the country. This includes not only assisted living professionals, but also children, spouses/partners, friends and neighbors.

In 2015, Alzheimer’s and other dementias will cost the nation $226 million in

both medical and general care services.

In an effort to increase awareness and support for Long Islanders and their families who are affected by the disease, ADRC is hosting two events in November. This includes the organization’s Second Annual Give from the Heart “Athletes for Endurance” competition, which is being held at gyms across Long Island throughout the month of November. This event promotes physical fitness, considered a vital element to fighting dementia, by challenging endurance athletes to do as many push-ups as possible. This year’s series is in memory of Dorothy C. Camilleri, who passed away in 2013 after battling Alzheimer’s disease. Additionally, ADRC is hosting the final segment of its 2015 Seminar Series on Monday, November 9th.

This event, titled “Stem Cell Research: Advancing Cures for Neurological Diseases,” features Dr. Scott Noggle, Vice President of the New York Stem Cell Foundation and Charles Evans Senior Research Fellow for Alzheimer’s Disease. The free seminar will be held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the

Huntington Public Library on 338 Main Street, Huntington, NY. Seating is limited, so please register ahead.

Osteoporosis ( N A P S ) — Osteoporosis—bone loss— is a serious condition that half of all women and many men can expect to develop at some time in their lives.

Fortunately, it can be detected and treated. In fact, women who have a bone density scan have 35 percent fewer hip fractures

than those who do not.

The problem is only 23 percent of eligible patients are scanned. The experts at the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) say that if you’re a woman over 65 or a man over 70 or if you’re over 50, postmenopausal and have risk factors for osteoporosis, you should

Advocates of the Children’s Center at the Cohalan Court Complex in Central Islip were invited to the annual Bagels and Books breakfast on October 21st. Among the invited guests was Anthony Felico, Jr., President of the Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA), who has been a “… huge supporter of the Children’s Center for years,” according to Agnes Cento, the center’s master teacher. Mrs. Sue Fox, District Court Clerk and Co-Chair of the Advisory Committee for the Children’s Center, referred to Felicio and the CTA membership as “ … long time, important, partners, in the work of the center.”

Felicio was invited by Ms. Cheryl Zimmer, Supreme Court Advisory Board Co-Chair, to join fellow children’s advocates who have been working together with the Education & Assistance Corporation (EAC). The EAC operates the Children’s Center to provide a safe, and

nurturing atmosphere, for youngsters while their families are involved in court proceedings. Among the invited guests were the Honorable C. Randall Hinrichs, Suffolk County District Administrative Judge and the Honorable Vincent J. Martorana, District Court Judge.

“Again, it was a pleasure to be invited to the Cohalan Children’s Center representing the membership of the CTA”, said Felicio. “The association donated over $200 in new books for the children, which will help bring a bit of sunshine to the youngsters that use the center. It’s gratifying to be in the company of so many people that are also supportive and concerned for the welfare of young children.

As educators, we support and nurture every child, regardless of their background, where they come from, mental capacity, religious beliefs and/or the illnesses

they face. The Cohalan Children’s Center can count on the continued support of the members of the Connetquot Teachers Association.”

For the past 10 years, Connetquot teachers have supplied children’s books, healthy snacks, bottled water and fruit juices, tissues and paper towels to be used by the youngsters at the Children’s Center.

The center is open five days a week, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. under the supervision of Head Teacher Agnes Cento.

From January to April 2015 alone, the center served 396 children, and 299 families. Last year the Children’s Center serviced over 1,200 children.

Connetquot teachers continue to provide hats, scarves, gloves and toys to the Children’s Center over the course of the school year. The children leave the center with new books, and warm clothes after each visit.

DEFENDING THEIR TITLE - Connetquot Central School District’s Connetquot High School girls’ varsity volleyball team and Coach Justin Hertz recently defeated Hauppauge High School at a home game, remaining undefeated with a record of 5-0-0.

So far this year the Connetquot High School varsity volleyball team has successfully defended their 2014 Suffolk County Volleyball Championship title.

DRIVING TOWARD PLAYOFFS - Connetquot Central School District’s Connetquot High School (CHS) Women’s Tennis team recently played against North Babylon High School for non-league competition. The ‘T-Birds’ currently enjoy a record of 7-3, and are seeking their fourth consecutive league playoff invitation. The Connetquot High School tennis program, led by Coach Ryan Cavanagh, continues to compete in Division II, one of the most challenging divisions in Suffolk County. Team captains this year are: Kayla Reidy, Christina Lonieski, Grace McGinnis and Veronica Passannate, all in the class of 2016.

Slocum Elementary School recently ushered in the new school year by hosting “Hollyrock Brain FAMILY MOVIE NIGHT - More than 100 Connetquot Central School District Challenge,” an interactive students, families and community members recently came together for Edward J. game show in which Bosti Elementary School’s annual Family Outdoor Movie Night. Families camped out students were challenged to on blankets and lawn chairs and munched on Parent-Teacher Association-provided snacks during the feature film, Walt Disney’s Big Hero Six. Children were thrilled at the opportunity to watch movies outdoors while parents were reminded of the drive-in theaters they frequented during their own childhoods.

The weekend’s festivities began with a Friday night pep rally, followed by a Saturday morning board gamethemed homecoming parade and culminating in the CHS T-Birds’ exciting 41-0 football win over crosstown rival Sachem East High School.

THROWBACK THURSDAY - Connetquot Central School District’s Connetquot High School (CHS) hosted “Throwback Thursday” as part of its recent spirit week.

More than 2,000 students and staff dressed as icons from ages past to participate in the event and show their school spirit. During the rest of the week students wore red and white to demonstrate their CHS pride.

On October 17th, Supervisor Ed Romaine attended the Court of Honor ceremony for Aidan Koehl Donnelly of Boy Scout Troop 362 in Selden.

Aidan attained the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest rank in the Boy Scouts of America.

Aidan’s Eagle Service project was to construct and install an osprey nest

platform at West Meadow Beach. Aidan developed his proposal, met with town officials, enlisted the help of PSEG and raised the funds for the project by hosting a pancake fundraiser at his local firehouse. Aidan’s project encompassed both the planning and overseeing of all efforts required to construct the osprey nest

platform.

To become an Eagle Scout, a scout must earn a minimum of 21 merit badges, demonstrate leadership, and perform an approved community service project. Since the first Eagle Scout Award was presented in 1912, no more than 4 percent of all Scouts have attained the Eagle Scout rank.

Connetquot Central School District’s Edward J. Bosti 5th grade students recently created birthday cards for Beth Catlin, a 52 year-old autistic savant living in Pennsylvania.

Beth has memorized the names, addresses and birthdates of almost

4,000 people around the world, and each year sends personal birthday greetings to each of them.

Finalists Mentored Seventeen high school students mentored by faculty at Stony Brook University have been selected as regional finalists in the 2015 Siemens Competition in Math, Science & Technology – one of the top nationwide research competitions for high school researchers. Stony Brook University mentored a total of 51 semifinalists in the competition, marking a University record. The results rank the University among the institutional leaders who mentor high school researchers from Long Island and around the country.

The regional finalists, selected from the group of 466 national semifinalists, will advance to one of six regional competitions held over three consecutive weekends in November. Winners of the regional events will then advance to the National Finals held at George Washington University in December where $500,000 in scholarships will be awarded, including two top awards of $100,000. Touch-a-Truck Program

Students at Developmental Disabilities Institute (DDI) climbed on National Grid trucks to see how they operate for the Touch-A-Truck program which, came to their Huntington campus.

This program gives the students the ability to engage, see, and the touch the equipment and to have some fun.

DDI, a non-profit, and National Grid have a strong partnership and have been working together strengthening children’s education.

Students enjoyed the Dig-It which they could sit in and pull on the levers while wearing a National Grid hard hat. National Grid employees were on hand with their trucks and they allowed the students to explore and interact with some of the equipment and safety gear they use on a daily basis.

Students also watched National Grid workers operate the vacuum truck which makes lots of noise and vacuums up rocks; workers use it to excavate in sensitive areas. Children with developmental disabilities and autism have an easier time understanding what they can see and touch, while having fun.

For more than forty years, our Cinderella program has helped to revitalize local communities not on Long Island, Queens, Brooklyn and Staten Island.

Through this program, National Grid has been able to offer revitalization grants to encourage non-profit organizations and community groups to restore buildings throughout Long Island communities.

This is just one of the many programs at National Grid, along with countless volunteer efforts under National Grid’s employee volunteer program, Power to Serve, that illustrate National Grid’s commitment to improving the quality of life on Long Island. The Cinderella Grant awarded to DDI helped fund some of the needed improvements to the school. The parking lot had become quite a safety hazards for the students, parents, and faculty and was repaved with the grant. Safety is National Grid’s number one priority and they are pleased to help make that kind of improvement to the school.
