The Cemetery of Lost Souls is a grass roots organization that gears up each year to create an elaborate Haunted House on the founder’s property, located at 350 Broadway in Massapequa Park. E v e r y bit of money raised through their annual event (admission, donations, sponsorships, etc.) is given to a chosen charity.

They have raised a lot of money over the years in donations alone and have donated to charities such as Autism Speaks, The Breast Cancer Research Foundation, Ronald McDonald House Charities and Long Island Cares.

This year they will bring the community a new interactive experience with the second Lost Souls Walk-Thru haunt, new rooms, new scares and new thrills! The remaining events will run on October 25-26, 31 and November 1-2 from 7PM-11:30PM. The chosen charity for 2019 is Melissa’s Wish, a non-profit organization founded with the purpose of providing short term, non-medical financial aid in the form of a grant to caregivers who are assisting those afflicted with a serious illness, injury or end of life event.

This homegrown haunt has been up and running for a few weeks so far this year and visitors have only good things to say! Below are some recent reviews:

Matthew “Dezy” DiStefano, a Connetquot resident and Sachem High School North assistant volleyball coach, thanked the crowd for their participation and offered inspirational advice about never giving up in his fight against cancer. In addition to Mr. DiStefano and his team, the district would like to thank Connetquot High School girls volleyball coach Justin Hertz and district parents for organizing the event. Connetquot High School’s chapter of the National Business Honor Society has been recognized as a Gold Partner with Junior Achievement USA. The chapter received this honor due to the

students’ involvement in the High School Heroes program, for which students attended four hours of training for Junior Achievement’s “More than Money” program. After being trained, the high school students taught Connetquot fifth graders about financial literacy, entrepreneurship, goods and services and global markets.

Through hands-on activities, the elementary students learned a practical approach to starting a business and making smart decisions about managing money.

Additionally, by volunteering their time, the high school students learned to build

employability skills such as leadership, public speaking, critical thinking and time management.

According to Connetquot Central School District Director of Business and Social Studies Margaret Ronai, the Gold Partner status will provide additional internship and job shadowing opportunities with Junior Achievement corporate sponsors for the students.

Due to the successes of the National Business Honor Society, chapter advisers Gina Senft and Andrea Pizzimenti were invited to attend the Junior Achievement’s Annual Celebration.

Based on both their musical talents and teacher recommendations, six Connetquot High School students have been recognized as premier musicians and selected to perform on the state and national level.

Due to their incredible musical capabilities, Robert Alvarado (mixed chorus) and Giovanni Santiago (mixed chorus) have been selected to perform in the National Association for Music

Education’s All-National Conference in Orlando, Florida this November.

Additionally, students Alicia Donlon (symphonic band), Paul Foschino (symphonic band/ symphony orchestra alternate), Brian Hummel (symphony orchestra) and Emily Morris (symphony orchestra) were selected as participants or alternates for the 2019 NYSSMA AllState Conference that will be held in Rochester, New York from Dec. 5-8.

The Town of Brookhaven Animal Shelter and Adoption Center has announced that it is offering a voucher program for free feral cat and pit bull or pit bull mix spay/neuter.

Vouchers will be given to residents who live in the Town of Brookhaven and have feral cats or pit bulls that need to be altered.

Surgeries are scheduled by appointment only.

Feral Cat Program Vouchers are given to residents who live in the Town of Brookhaven and have feral cats that need to be altered. Two vouchers are issued at a time to each resident. The vouchers are redeemed at the Integrative Veterinary Therapies in Ridge. You

must call the clinic to make an appointment once you have the vouchers.

Cats must be brought into the clinic in a trap on the day of surgery. The cats will be ear tipped and rabies vaccinated at the time of surgery.

Pit Bull / Pit Bull Mix Program The voucher automatically entitles you to one spay or neuter procedure for your Pitbull or Pitbull mix. To ensure the health and wellbeing of your pet and their ability to undergo surgery safely, we request that all dogs over the age of five undergo a free blood work screening at least one week before the scheduled surgical procedure. All surgical candidates five years or older must come to the Brookhaven Animal Shelter on a walk-in basis during our normal business

hours within those seven days before surgery to allow for the blood to be taken from your pet and sent out for evaluation.

This program has been provided by the Town of Brookhaven Animal Shelter in partnership with the Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation Mobile Spay/Neuter Clinic.

Halloween has become a hugely popular time for fun and festivities, but with it comes the potential for a variety of fire hazards. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) encourages everyone to take these simple precautions to stay safe without sacrificing that fun.

“Halloween brings an opportunity to wear fun costumes, decorate our homes, and eat too much candy,” says Lorraine Carli, NFPA’s vice president of

Outreach and Advocacy.

“However, without proper safety precautions, we run the risk of turning good times into the wrong kind of scary ones.”

According to NFPA research, between 2012 and 2016, decorations were the item first ignited in an estimated average of 800 reported home structure fires per year, resulting in an average of two civilian deaths, 34 civilian injuries and $11 million in direct property damage. The decoration was too close

to a heat source such as a candle or equipment in almost half of these fires.

NFPA offers these tips to stay safe during the spooky season: Costumes: Avoid fabric that billows or trails behind you, as these can easily ignite. If you are making your own costume, avoid loosely woven fabrics like linen and cotton, which can be very flammable.

Decorations: Many common decorations like cornstalks, crepe paper,

and dried flowers are very flammable. Keep these and similar decorations far away from any open flames or heat sources, like candles, heaters, and light bulbs.

Candles: Using candles as decoration can be risky if not done correctly.

Keep them in a wellattended area out of the path of potential trick-ortreaters. Remind children of the dangers of open flames, and make sure they are supervised at all times when candles are

Halt Hazards With These Tips lit. Extinguish candles before leaving an area.

Jack-O-lanterns: Glow sticks or electric candles are the safest choice when it comes to lighting up your jack-o-lantern, but if you choose to use a real candle, do so with extreme caution.

Light a candle inside a jack-o-lantern using long fireplace matches or a utility lighter, and keep it away from other decorations.

Visibility: Give children flashlights or glowsticks

for lighting, these can even be incorporated into the costume. If your child has a mask, ensure the eye holes are large enough for them to see clearly.

Smoke Alarms: This is a great time to make sure your smoke alarms are functional and up-todate.

Exits: Exits are NOT an appropriate place for decorations. When decorating, ensure that nothing is blocking any escape routes.
