Harry “Have you ever really had a teacher? One who saw you as a raw but precious thing, a jewel that, with wisdom, could be polished to a proud shine?” ~ Mitch Albom Last week, I was saddened to learn of the passing of a most cherished teacher, mentor and friend, Mr. Elsesser - “Harry” as he signed the yearly Christmas cards we exchanged. They say that some people leave footprints on your heart… this was most certainly true of the man who took me under his wing way back in 4th grade, and helped me to soar to new heights I never thought possible.

Up to that point, I had been a fairly good student, conscientious enough in the academic department, but lacking a bit of the “plays well with others” skills that tend to come with time.

Seeing this unfulfilled potential, Mr. Elsesser made it his mission to ensure that I would flourish under his watchful eye.

His class was one of those that you find yourself reflecting upon from time to time with a smile, recalling anecdotes and amusing instances, such as when he would entertain us with stories of his travels - to Africa, the Galapagos Islands, Japan, and beyond.

Occasionally, there would be touches of Swahili thrown into the vocabulary lesson for good measure.

As I entered fifth grade a better all-around student and person, Mr. E. decided to retire after 30 years of teaching in the Lindenhurst school district.

Saddened to see him go, and promising to keep in touch, my mother - who had also been a student in the district when Mr. Elsesser began his tenure there started a yearly correspondence, exchanging Christmas cards and keeping each other updated on the happenings in our respective lives.

Years later, I took over this tradition and began sending my own correspondence, filling Mr.

E. in on the comings and goings of college and, eventually, my blossoming career. How proud he was to learn that I was utilizing my love of writing and had become a weekly columnist for my old hometown paper.

Often, he would call my desk at the office, greeting me with, Is this Miss Jamie Lynn Ryan, the reporter?? We would chat about how work was going, the family, had I seen any of my old classmates lately, what I had for lunch… and always, without fail, as we were getting ready to hang up, he would say, Send hugs and kisses to your parents, and of course to you too.

What a wonderful man, and what a treasured friendship, one sustained for over a quarter of a century. How lucky I was that our paths crossed in life, and how blessed I am to have so many fond memories to reflect upon, and remember with a smile.

Balloon-Powered Waverly Avenue Elementary students in the Sachem Central School District practiced basic engineering principles as they worked together to construct balloon-powered cars during an interactive STEAM lesson.

In the school’s new STEAM room, students from Cathy Juliano’s fourth-grade class began

collaborating on designs to create a functioning self-propelled balloon car. Supplied with foam balls, straws, wooden rods, tape, rubber bands, a water bottle and a balloon, students began to assemble their cars.

Assisted by art teacher Susan Kinsey and Librarian Luann Cronin, the fourth-graders

applied problem-solving techniques throughout the construction process to overcome design obstacles and effectively complete their vehicles.

At the conclusion of the lesson, the student groups came together to test their balloon-powered cars and collectively discussed solutions to improve their vehicles.

While in attendance, he was personally taught by top professionals in the areas of science and technology, including Nobel Prize winners David

J. Wineland, Ph.D., and Sheldon Glashow, Ph.D., as well as young geniuses Jack Andraka (Intel International Science and Engineering Fair 2012 grand prize winner) and Shree Bose (2011 Google Science Fair grand prize winner).

The theme of each Congress is “Greatness Awaits,” and it offers America’s finest students the opportunity to be mentored by top leaders in the field. In order to be accepted into the

guidance counselor for leadership ability, academic achievement and dedication to science and technology while also holding a GPA of 3.5 or above.

The three-day conference, held in Lowell, Massachusetts, includes a collection of seminars lead

by Nobel Prize winners and industry-leading inventors. The annual conference draws more than 1,000 students from across the country.

Mark plans to further his science and technology knowledge by studying earth science and physics in college, with the hope of becoming a science educator himself.

by USGS, the Lake Ronkonkoma Advisory Board, and Bill Pfeiffer.

As the largest freshwater lake on Long Island, Lake

Ronkonkoma has suffered in the past from pollution, invasive species and poor property management, and the Lake Management Planning Services program would go a long way in both measuring current progress and preserving any improvements that have been made.

“We’ve come a long way,” Legislator Kennedy remarked, “but we have a long way to go, and with the help of SUNY Oneonta and the NYSFLA we can get there faster than ever.”

We Have Been Helping Our Advertisers “Catch” New Customers Since 1953!

The Brookhaven Youth Bureau is teaming up with all Custom, Classic and Modified Car, Truck and Motorcycle Clubs to help families in need on Sunday, November 12th, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. This annual event is sure to be fun for the entire family, as club members will be displaying their cars and motorcycles at Brookhaven Town Hall, One Independence Hill in Farmingville in an effort to raise donations for families in need through the Youth Bureau’s INTERFACE Program.

Attendees are asked to bring non-perishable food items to contribute to the Thanksgiving Food Drive and new, unwrapped toys for children to open during the holiday season. Last year’s event raised $3,400 for turkeys and 2,000 pounds of non-perishable food, along with more than $25,000 worth of toys. Admission is free and cash donations are accepted. There will be no judging of the vehicles

Utilizing Green Thumbs Members of the afterschool gardening club at Connetquot Central School District’s Ronkonkoma Middle School are currently enhancing their connection to nature by learning about the benefits of growing fresh fruits and vegetables together and sampling the harvest they have cultivated.

Under the advisory of English teacher Heidi Edmonds, dozens of students from all grade

levels are collaborating amongst one another and cultivating realworld gardening skills.

Additionally, throughout the course of their meetings, the students are becoming accustomed to the growing patterns of local soil, and which produce is easiest to grow in their native garden.

Prior to the beginning of the school year, the students met throughout the summer to plant seeds

in hopes of seeing what their efforts would yield.

“Throughout their gardening efforts, the students have come to find that broccoli and Brussels sprouts are easy to grow and are highly adaptable to the soil,” Mrs. Edmonds explained.

Girl Scouts Honored

Proud parents were wearing Kool-Aid smiles as Councilman Dan Panico honored Center Moriches Girl Scout Troop #2957 at Brookhaven Town Hall on September 28th.

The girls worked with the Brookhaven Youth Bureau to help earn their Girl Scout Bronze Award, the highest honor a Girl Scout Junior can achieve.

They raised donations by

collecting recyclables from Clayton Huey Elementary School in Center Moriches and holding a spring fling dance.

With the donations, the girls purchased backpacks to give to children in Brookhaven Town who will be transitioning into foster homes. In each backpack was a personal letter from the troop with items such as blankets, crayons and

coloring books.

Vocational Skills When Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) staff, students, friends, and family signed in at the agency table during the Autism Speaks 3-mile walk held at Jones Beach they were offered a free water bottle.

Students from Special Education Teacher’s Bayley, Girolamo, and Buchrieser at the Brookhaven Learning Center worked as a fine-

oiled team customizing over 300 bottles with the special labels. They “branded” the water bottles with the agency lighthouse logo.

Each year members of Team ESBOCES look forward to getting the specially branded bottles because they know the students did all the work customizing them.

said, “The students are taught that it’s important to donate their time for a good cause and to do community service work.”

Bayley said, “The activity provided the students an opportunity to hone their vocational skills like assembling, following directions, and working independently. When they collaborate they practice their social and sharing skills.”

Making Slime The Special Career Education students in Lauren Daquet’s Food Prep class at the Gary D. Bixhorn Technical Center (BTC) recently made slime.

This served as a great first lesson for students since it required them to follow a recipe and measure ingredients, and also provided them

with a finished product that works as a sensory activator.

BTC is an Eastern Suffolk BOCES school that provides a range of educational services, including Special Career Education classes that teach entry-level, industry skills to students with special needs.

Gus Klavas, a graduate from the Eastern Suffolk BOCES Facilities Maintenance Program at Ward Technical Center (WTC) in Riverhead was recently honored by the Suffolk County Department of Labor (SCDOL) for the work he did when he participated in the Summer Youth Employment Program.

encouraged Gus to complete an application so he could be considered for a summer job at WTC through the SCDOL so he could gain work experience.

In addition to working the summer job at WTC, Gus owns and operates his own landscaping business and works part-time at the marina in Southold.

Facilities Maintenance Teacher Arthur Pagano said, “Gus was enrolled in the Facilities Maintenance

Program for two years. He excelled and was one of my best students. He was on the honor roll every quarter and a great leader and role model to the other students in the class.”

As a member of Skills USA, Gus competed in the Regional Carpenters Assistant Competition at Suffolk County Community College in Bentwood.

Sachem Central School District’s Grundy Avenue Elementary students learned about energy and effective practices to conserve it during a PSEG Long Island-sponsored assembly by the Energized Guyz.

The program incorporated multiple characters and explored four main topics: defining energy, the uses of energy, how energy is wasted

and ways to conserve it.

Throughout the show, students were taught about various energy conservation methods and tactics to cut down energy waste around their homes.

“It’s really important that we educate and help children and their families understand the importance of our natural resources and using energy wisely,” said George Coburn, customer experience

manager for PSEG Long Island.

“Even young students can understand that they have energy choices. The younger they begin learning, the more likely they will retain these concepts throughout their life.”

Following the presentations, teachers reinforced topics learned during the performance with classroom activities on energy.

Sparking Interest

Sachem Central School District students at Merrimac Elementary were treated to a schoolwide pet education assembly led by two of their fellow students – fifth-graders Camdyn Bentivenga and Jaclyn Ianson, each of whom has a passion for animal safety.

During the presentation, the students shared that passion and spoke about the nonprofit organization, the Pet Education Project.

“We chose PEP because it was the only organization that helps animals with kids leading the way,” said Camdyn. “I like how we help teach everyone how to become animal heroes!”

PEP promotes a message of responsible pet ownership and

spreads awareness of pet abuse. During the presentation, students learned about animal shelter overcrowding and ways that they can make a positive impact on affected animals. The two student presenters developed an interactive way to raise money for the PEP organization. They created a “spin and win wheel” where students donate a dollar to spin for a chance to win a prize such as stuffed animals, bookmarks, PEP pencils and key chains. All prizes were provided by Jaclyn and Camdyn’s parents. To date, the students have raised $476.

“Throughout our work with the organization I’ve

learned many valuable lessons – the most important of which was how many pets really need our help,” said Jaclyn.

“Having the spin and win wheel will involve everyone in our school in helping to raise funds for this very important cause.”

Following the presentation, Camdyn and Jaclyn held a brief questionand-answer period, also informing the students that Erica Falbaum, the PEP founder, will be visiting on Oct. 20. After the students contacted Falbaum, she was excited to come to Merrimac and share her “PEP talk” with the students.

Spreading the Warmth The Town of Islip Youth Bureau Coat Drive is underway. Youth Bureau personnel are inviting all who are able, to donate any unwanted, new or gently worn coats, of any size, to the Youth Bureau’s DropOff location at 401 Main Street, Islip.

“This coat drive will help children and adults

stay warm this winter,” said Tim Mare, Acting Executive Director, Town of Islip Youth Bureau. “A winter coat can make the difference in a person’s health and in their selfesteem,” he said.

Coats will be distributed free of charge to those in need throughout the Town of Islip. Anyone wishing

to support this cause and help “Spread the Warmth,” can drop off their coat donations at the Town of Islip Youth Bureau, located at 401 Main Street, Islip NY 11751.

First Prize Winner Longwood High School senior Jacob Brill has been named the first place winner (Division #4) in the 2017 School Bus Safety Poster Contest.

Sponsored by The New York Association for Pupil Transportation and the Cyr Foundation, Jacob’s poster will be submitted to the

National Association for Pupil Transportation for consideration and judging at the national level.

According to the letter announcing Jacob’s achievement, “Your participation in the contest gave you an opportunity to share your understanding of school bus safety

with hundreds of school transportation officials from all over New York State.”

As the first place winner in the Division 4 category, Jacob received a congratulatory certificate and a monetary prize.

Legislator Tom Muratore recently recognized a local Girl Scout Troop for their efforts within the community.

Suffolk County Girl Scout Troop 2518 recently met with Legislator Muratore at the Stop and Shop supermarket on Portion

Road in Ronkonkoma, where he presented each member with a Certificate of Recognition for their volunteerism and service in the community where they live.

“As Girl Scouts, these young ladies are being taught the value of helping,

serving and caring for others,” stated Legislator Muratore. “It was a pleasure recognizing their hard work and the values being instilled now, which will have a lasting impact well into their adult lives.”
