n Saturday, October 4th, the Middle Island Fire Department’s Open House was held at their substation in Middle Island. The annual free event, which commemorates October as Fire Safety Month, included free giveaways, tours of the fire house and demonstrations of the department’s equipment.

Science Inspires Eastern Suffolk BOCES students connected with science and the world around them when they participated in a Simulated Disease Transmission Lab activity. Canine Career Program and Health Related Occupations Program students took part in this collaborative exercise to learn how disease is transmitted.

Canine Career Teacher Lisa Konnerth said, “The students were paired off into groups of two. Each group was given a vial with “body fluids”, which was really distilled water.

Students were instructed to share their “body fluids” with three other people and keep track of who they shared with.”

Student Spotlight GAMER GATE The malpractice of “journalists” on prominent gaming journalism websites such as Kotaku and RockPaperShotgun was first examined under a critical lens when an independent developer named Zoe Quinn was exposed. She had cheated on her boyfriend, now her ex-boyfriend, and he had written a blog about what had transpired, intriguingly titled: “The Zoe Post.”

In this blog, Eron, Zoe’s ex, documented a list of reasons and events leading to the break up, which spurred reaction from the community when it was revealed that she was having intimate relationships with people who wrote articles for gaming news websites, namely, those who wrote positive reviews and articles for Zoe’s game, “Depression Quest,” a text-based adventure game which was not well-received by the community.

As the corruption began to come to light, leading to public outcry, it was quickly censored and oppressed all across the internet. As people became more enraged, due to the fact that their right to freedom of speech was being taken away by anonymous hands, members of the community invested in the industry who felt as though it was wrong to condone corruption, started digging. More tidbits of corruption were unearthed, exposing financial and intimate relationships between writers and their sources, the developers.

However, this was not before journalists responded to the community’s irritation over the lack of ethics among these journalists. These journalists defended Zoe, taking cover behind unrelated societal issues, such as misogyny and hostility towards feminists. Each week, the

Fun In Fire Safety In recognition of Fire Prevention Week, students at East Islip’s Connetquot Elementary School were visited by members of the Islip Terrace Fire Department.

T h e informative October 7th presentation was led by firefighter Joe Felder, a former Connetquot student.

Fire Prevention Week was established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire that took place during two tragic October days in 1871,

and provides an annual opportunity for young students to learn important lessons regarding fire safety and precautions.

During the assembly, children learned about the protective gear that firefighters wear and how these garments assist them when entering burning buildings. Fire department representatives explained the importance of fire trucks and what functions the various pieces of equipment on the vehicles perform, before giving the

students a fun look inside the trucks.

“We are grateful for the time that these firefighters spent with our students,” said Principal Deborah Smith. “We also recognize and appreciate the many volunteer hours they dedicate to be ready to answer a call for help, and we hope that today’s visit reminds everyone to check their smoke detectors to make sure they are in working order.”

Professional journalists know that the things they have carried out and the way they have handled public response is extremely wrong. These writers have betrayed our trust; but more importantly, their duty. People must know of the injustice that befalls the fifth estate so that it may be corrected. Awareness is crucial to fighting relentless corruption.

On Tuesday, September 30th, Councilwomen Connie Kepert and Jane Bonner presented a Certificate of Congratulations, along with the entire Town Board, to Longwood Central School District Transportation Coordinator, Gale Winsper.

Gale, who has led the Longwood transportation department for 12 years,

was recently honored with the Art Schock Award by the New York Association for Pupil Transportation (NYAPT) at their annual conference in Albany.

Gale also serves on the State Education Department’s (SED) Advisory Board to the State Director for Pupil Transportation Services, is one of just 24 Master Instructors in New York

State, and has chaired the SED’s Master Instructor Committee to implement a school bus drivers’ course for the state.

Ms. Winsper also spearheads Long Island’s annual Operation Safe Stop program, which is a state-wide effort to crack down on illegal, potentially lethal passing of buses by motorists.

The Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA) was once again wellrepresented at the 2014 ‘Making Strides Against Breast Cancer’ Walk at the Brookhaven campus of Dowling College on a beautiful Sunday morning, October 5th. Organized by Joanna Zalewski, teachers, spouses, parents and students representing the CTA were among the estimated 10,000 walkers determined to help in the fight against breast cancer.

CTA President, Mr. Anthony Felicio, Jr., said “I would like to thank

Ms. Joanna Zalewski for her efforts in organizing the CTA’s involvement in this very worthy cause. I’d also like to thank those members who participated and supported those efforts.”

Since 1993, more close to 10 million walkers across America have raised almost $550 million to fight breast cancer through these Making Strides Walks. In the past year, over one million walkers across the United States raised close to $70 million in the fight against breast cancer. Funding raised at

these national ‘Walks’ is used to invest in cancer research to find, prevent, treat and cure the disease.

The organization also provides free information and services to people facing breast cancer, such as transportation, lodging, wigs, support programs and financial assistance.

Felicio praised the efforts of the American Cancer Society, and thanked the Connetquot community for it’s generous support in the fight against breast cancer.

I recently adopted two pet goldfish. And by adopted, I mean spent $5 on 30 chances to win one at a carnival, and spent 17¢ on the other at a local pet store.

Add to that the expense of a fishbowl, pretty neon-colored gravel, a fun plant for the two of them to dart behind whenever I’m within a 5 mile radius, the all-important goldfish food which they don’t appear to even notice floating overhead, and a scrubbing brush and net for the weekly cleaning process and maintenance.

All that, with the hope that these two finned friends

will make it through the week, maybe even a month or two. My record so far is one whole year, upon which milestone my beta fish promptly croaked. I suppose the birthday celebration was too much for him. So far, as of this writing, five days and going strong. Not bad.

Of course, I realize goldfish aren’t the most sociable of pets to have, but these two – whom I named Harvey and Harry – are beyond standoffish. I turn the light on, they swim away; I sprinkle a few food flakes in their bowl, they’re nowhere to be found. I walk away, turn the light out and – viola – there they are, faces pressed against the glass.

I have visions of the conversation that must go on between them when I’m not in the room: When is the human coming back? Why does she bother us? Did you eat today?

I wish we had more trees to hide behind. Yes, I know – it’s silly. But they are home alone together all day; there must be some form of socialization between them, no?

At any rate, I can feel satisfied that I rescued two goldfish, one from the madness of the carnival setting, the other from the schools of fellow fish in the aquarium.

Even if they do prefer to cram themselves into a corner by themselves.

Team Lily Winners

the ages 13-16 category is Nathan Sigerson and the winner of the age 12 and under category is Matt Eiring. Councilman Panico congratulated the winners and thanked everyone who participated for their generous contribution of time, effort and donations.

All proceeds benefit Team Lily. Lily Roth was born on March 19th, 2014 at St. Charles Hospital with a very rare skin disorder called Congenital Melanocytic Nevi, also known as CMN. Lily

will need a number of surgeries and will have to travel thousands of miles to obtain treatment.

The Roth family will pay about $80,000 for a series of surgeries over three years to remove the nevi, which are sensitive and carry increased risk of skin cancer. The Roths launched a fundraising campaign on July 6th, and so far have raised $32,000 online, at events, and by selling “Team Lily” T-shirts for $10 each.
