Panthers Pounce Into Homecoming Weekend

The Miller Place School District welcomed students, staff, alumni and friends to its annual Homecoming celebration on September 17. Throughout the week, students and staff members at all school buildings displayed their school spirit for “Spirit Week” in preparation for the celebratory weekend parade and football game. Although the Miller Place Panthers put up a tough fight on the gridiron, the Kings Park Kingsmen ultimately won with a final score of 31 to 20.

“The community showed tremendous Panther Pride this homecoming weekend and our students displayed their enthusiasm representing themselves and the District in typical Panther tradition - colorful, creative and uniquely Miller Place,” said Superintendent of Schools Seth Lipshie.

“The energy from those in attendance was palpable and

it was great to reunite with alumni.”

To kick off Spirit Week, students celebrated Pajama Day, coming to school dressed in their coziest pajamas.

On Tropical Tuesday, the hallways were full of students ready for a luau in Hawaiian shirts and leis. On Wacky Wednesday, students sported their most imaginative and funky outfits wearing mismatched socks, neon colored clothing, and silly hairstyles. On Throwback Thursday, students dressed in various decade-themed apparel from the 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s eras. The week concluded with Spirit Day, highlighted by students donning their favorite Miller Place School District merchandise and a Pep Rally at the High School.

For the Homecoming parade, Panther cheerleaders, members of the MPHS pep band,

and students from each building in the District marched alongside the handcrafted floats. The parade began at the Miller Place Fire Department South and navigated to the high school’s Stadium Field where the Miller Place Panther’s football team played against the Kings Park Kingsmen.

Before the game, the newest class of inductees of the District’s Athletic Hall of Fame walked onto the Stadium Field to be honored by the community. Inductees included Andrew Stafford, Class of ’77; Jacqueline Curtiss, Class of ‘79; Marion Mastrangelo, Class of ‘84; Ellen Moorehead, Class ‘85; and Greg Gaillard, Class of ‘96. Two coaches were also inducted: Salvatore Passamano and Liz Borsetti. Ms. Borsetti, or Coach B, was honored posthumously.

Douglas Elliman Long Island

The Long Island division of Douglas Elliman Realty, one of the largest residential brokerage companies in the nation, has partnered with The American Cancer Society to help in the fight against breast cancer.

As part of the organization’s annual, year-long initiative Real Men Wear Pink, agents from Elliman branch offices across Long Island have volunteered as Campaign Ambassadors to raise awareness and money in the fight to end breast cancer. Since its inception in 2013, Real Men Wear Pink has raised more than $40 million.

The brokerage’s involvement began in 2021, when Carlos Salinas, an agent in the Smithtown office, became the first Douglas Elliman Real Men Wear Pink Campaign Ambassador. Salinas found great joy in helping to make a difference and shared his experience with Ann Conroy, CEO of Douglas Elliman’s Long Island division. Inspired by Salinas, Conroy encouraged each Long Island branch office to establish a Campaign Ambassador for 2022. With more and more agents signing on, the Elliman team has raised more than $131,000 toward its $200,000 goal—and with plenty of fundraising

events yet to happen before year’s end.

“When I came to Douglas Elliman last year, my goal was to be one of the very best agents in the company while also giving back philanthropically,” said Salinas. “What better cause is there than to raise money for the fight against breast cancer. The support of both Ann Conroy and Katy Cardinale, Branch Manager of Douglas Elliman’s Smithtown office, has been monumental in my efforts of raising awareness through Real Men Wear Pink and The American Cancer Society.”

Salinas, who has raised almost $10,000 to date, is set to participate in a large fundraising and networking event on Tuesday, October 18th at Prato 850 in Commack, with all revenue benefiting the Real Men Wear Pink Campaign.

Michael Furino, another philanthropic agent with Douglas Elliman’s Franklin Square office, has dedicated himself to serving as a Campaign Ambassador.

“I started my own charity about 10 years ago, through which I have raised over $1,000,000,” said Furino. “When I was presented with the opportunity to become involved with Real Men Wear Pink, I was immediately excited,

since I was confident in my ability to organize great events and raise significant funds. It’s been a great experience for me to be a Campaign Ambassador for many reasons, including getting to know other agents in my office on a deeper level—some of them have even had personal experiences battling breast cancer.”

Furino, who has raised almost $20,000 to date, will host a Vegas Night fundraiser on Thursday, October 20, at Chateau Briand in Carle Place.

Sachem High School East Student Named National Merit Semifinalist

Sachem High School East senior Siddharth Sheth was named a semifinalist in the 2023 National Merit Scholarship Program.

Sheth was among the approximately 16,000 academically talented high school students from across the nation to be named a semifinalist. High school juniors entered the scholarship program by taking the Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/ NMSQT). Semifinalists represent less than 1% of U.S. high school seniors, including the highestscoring entrants in each state.

The program’s semifinalists have the opportunity to advance in the competition to win scholarships worth nearly $28 million in total. About 95% of semifinalists are expected to attain finalist

standing after submitting a detailed scholarship application. Finalists are expected to be announced in February.

Fall Freshwater Fishing & Children’s

At Hempstead Lake State Park

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s (DEC) I FISH NY Program and Freshwater Fisheries Unit are pleased to announce the Fall Freshwater Fishing & Children’s Festival will be held at Hempstead Lake State Park, on Saturday, October 15, from 10:00AM – 4:00PM.

The fishing license requirement for all anglers over the age of 16 is suspended for this festival and admission and parking are free. Festival activities include fishing instruction, casting practice, loaner rods, free bait, and fish cleaning services to all participants. A “Casting for Pumpkins” event for children will be provided by the Seaford

Knights of Columbus. Activities are provided by I FISH NY and the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation. Corporate sponsors include Renewal by Andersen of Long Island, New York Life and Veolia.

Prior to the festival, South and McDonald Ponds will be stocked with hundreds of brook and rainbow trout. The high concentration of stocked trout should provide a great opportunity to introduce your family to the wonderful sport of freshwater fishing.

In addition to fishing opportunities, there will be a wildlife show, magic performance, and much more.

The Charity of the Month for October is Helen Keller Services

Helen Keller Services (HKS), a nonprofit organization with locations across Long Island and the nation, works with thousands of individuals who are blind, have low vision, are DeafBlind or have combined hearing and vision loss to live, work and thrive in their community of choice.

The Helen Keller National Center (HKNC), which is located in Port Washington, is the only comprehensive national program that provides information, referral, support and training exclusively to youths and adults who have combined vision and hearing loss. The Center also supports the families and professionals who work with the DeafBlind community.

Every summer, HKS hosts Camp Helen Keller, a program for children who are blind, have low vision are DeafBlind or have combined hearing and vision loss. The camp seeks to improve participants’ self-esteem, selfconfidence and socialization skills. It’s held at the LIU Post campus in Brookville and admits campers from Nassau, Suffolk and Queens, who attend free of charge and receive door-to-door transportation, also free of charge.

“Everyone here is the same,” says Ellie Gallagher, a 10-year-old camper from Freeport, NY. “Here we all have some kind of visual disability, so no one feels different. And it’s a lot of fun.” Campers participate in traditional activities, such as swimming, arts and crafts, music and dance classes, as well as field trips and technology

classes that have been adapted for individuals with low vision .

Every year, the camp organizes a show on the last day of the one-month program to celebrate the campers’ achievements, show parents and friends what campers have been doing and to say goodbye to old and new friends. This year, show-stopping performances included dance routines to favorite songs including “Rainbow Connection” “The Theme From Cheers” and singing performances by select campers.

“It’s such a confidence boost for her,” says Ellie’s mom, Jennifer. “She looks forward to seeing the same friends every year. The activities she experiences lets her know she’s just like every other kid and can do just about anything.”

Additionally, October is month that celebrates the blind community in a variety of ways, including World Sight Day on October 14, White Cane Day on October 15 and the entire month designated as National Disability Employment Awareness Month, which celebrates the contributions of America’s workers with disabilities past and present and showcases supportive, inclusive employment policies and practices. It’s important to accept people of all abilities, from all walks of life, and this nonprofit does just that.

Teens, (Grades 6-12) can earn an hour and a half of community service when they drop off 15 homemade dog biscuits using the Mutti-grees recipe found on the Learning Commons Teen webpage. Biscuits will be donated to Islip Animal Shelter.

12th Annual Chili Cook-Off

The Association for Mental Health and Wellness will hold their 12th Annual Chili Cook-Off and Fall Festival on Saturday, October 15, 2022, from 12:00pm to 4:00pm. (Halloween Costume Contest at 3:30pm)

The event – which attracts hundreds of chili (and nonchili) enthusiasts each year – raises money to support programs for individuals living with mental illness and veterans. Free Admission.

Attendees will enjoy a diverse, delicious, and creative selection of meat and vegan chili dishes from local food establishments, area businesses, and local talent. Trophies will be given in several categories including a “People’s Choice” award.

There will be a myriad of one-of-a-kind vendors, food, beverages, raffle prizes, and children’s games including a much-anticipated annual

Halloween costume contest for children under 10 years of age. In addition, live music will be provided by School of Rock: Farmingdale/Sayville, part of the international music education program by the same name.

Congratulations Middle Country Central SD Long Island Arts Alliance Merit Scholar Artists Recipients

Middle Country Central School District recently announced that Centereach High School seniors Finn Taich and Natalie Godinez had been named Long Island Arts Alliance (LIAA) Merit Scholar Artist Recipients. Finn received recognition in the area of theatre while Natalie was recognized in visual arts.

“Congratulations to our Centereach High School seniors, Finn Taich and Natalie Godinez,” said Dr. Roberta Gerold, Superintendent of Schools. “This was a very competitive award, with only eight seniors selected per arts area from all of Long Island! Special thanks to their sponsoring teachers, Brian

Hough, and Karissa LaLima, for their relentless dedication and support of our students.”

LIAA Scholar Artist Merit recipients are nominated by their school district and must represent the highest level of artistic excellence in their area of concentration. Recipients must demonstrate superior academic achievement with an unweighted grade point average of 90 or above and submit an essay and a portfolio of their work or performance.

Finn Taich has been involved in theatre since the fourth grade. His exceptional skills allowed him the opportunity to play notable roles throughout his school years

such as Mike Teavee in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Mad Hatter in Alice in Wonderland, and Troy Bolton in High School Musical. Finn is looking forward to playing Geppeto in this year’s upcoming musical, Pinocchio. Natalie Godinez has been an artist since the third grade, receiving recognition and awards for her creativity, vision, and use of various mediums. Natalie has had her work featured in the Middle Country Districtwide Art Exhibit for many years. Both students plan to continue to pursue their talents in college next year.
