VOLLEYBALL TEAM SUPPORTS CANCER RESEARCH - In an effort to support cancer research, Connetquot Central School District’s boys volleyball program recently hosted a charity game to directly support the Dezy Strong Foundation. In February 2019, Sachem High School North assistant volleyball coach Matthew “Dezy” DiStefano was diagnosed with stage 4 kidney cancer. According to their official website, the foundation, founded in 2019, was established to provide the opportunity for individuals with cancer to have access to experiences that directly affect a positive mental well-being. Making Birthday Wishes Come True Ms. Catlin possesses an incredible mind, and is able to recall the names, addresses and birth dates of the thousands of people she has met throughout the years. Girls Lacrosse Celebrates Dominating Season
The Northport High School varsity girls lacrosse team proudly flashed new hardware: their New York State Championship rings. Upon receiving their rings, the student athletes reminisced with their teammates over a “dominating” season. Having earned second place with a record of 21-1 in their regular season, the team qualified for playoffs. In the opening round, they beat Commack
15-5 and advanced to the semifinals where they beat Ward Melville 13-7 to qualify for the Suffolk County Class Championship. The Tigers won 13-7 against Middle Country to earn the county title and proceeded to beat Farmingdale 15-4 for the Long Island Championship. High on the heels of those victories, the teams dominated over Pittsford in the New York State semifinals, and defeated
Baldwinsville 10-8 to win their first State Championship since 2011. “They dominated the competition,” Mark Dantuono, the district’s director of heath, physical education and athletics, said. Congratulations to the entire team, as well as head coach Carol Rainson-Rose, assistant coach Alton Rose, and volunteer assistant coaches Alexis Curcio and Cortney Fortunato.
Kindergartners Gear Up Connetquot Central School District kindergartners attending both Sycamore Avenue and Edith L. Slocum elementary schools met their teachers and made new friends at the annual kindergarten playdates held at their respective schools earlier this month. Prior to the first day of school on Sept. 5, the future Connetquot High School graduating Class of
2032 were invited to tour their classrooms, play with some old friends and make a few new ones along the way. Sycamore Avenue Elementary School Principal Stuart Pollak and Edith L. Slocum Elementary School Principal Mr. John Delio were on hand to welcome the parents and new students for this special day.
Both Sycamore and Slocum teachers, along with members of the school’s Parent-Teacher Associations, welcomed the students and made them comfortable with their new surroundings. Refreshments and craft activities were also provided by each school’s PTA officers as the students mingled and enjoyed their first official visit to their new schools.

The Charity of the Month for October is: The Cemetry of Lost Souls (lostsoulsli.com) Benefitting Melissa’s Wish It’s hard to believe that October is already here and Halloween is quickly approaching! After The Cemetery of Lost Souls, a grassroots organization ran by a family in Massapequa Park, reached out to me and told me their story, I decided to choose them for the Charity of the Month. Sometimes it’s easy to judge a book by it’s cover. For example, when you see the frightening Haunted House that they create each year, you may not be thinking that there is a deep meaning behind why they do it. Once I discovered this, along with the driving force which pushes them to bring this event back year after year, I knew I had to feature them! In 2008 Christopher and Joann (husband and wife) of Massapequa Park started decorating their yard for Halloween with their children. In 2009 they built their first prop, added some smoke, lights and store bought decorations. That same year they became aware of H.O.L.I., an organization on Long Island that compiles a list of the best decorated home “Haunts”. It became their family’s goal to make it onto that list and in 2011 they achieved that goal. In 2012, their children had the idea of using their “special talents” to help others. Their oldest son thought of making their displays more interactive by adding actors to haunt their elaborate sets and setting up a donation box that people could donate to different charities. Their charity event was officially born and every year since it has grown bigger. Each year this organization gears up to create an elaborate Haunted House on their property, located at 350 Broadway in Massapequa Park. Additionally and more importantly, each year they choose a charity to raise funds for. The best part is, they don’t keep a penny for themselves. Every bit of money raised through this event (admission, donations, sponsorships, etc.) is given to charity. They rely heavily on devoted individuals and community support, as the actors and people who put the haunt on are volunteers and most of
the actors are local students. They have raised a lot of money over the years in donations alone and have donated to charities such as Autism Speaks, The Breast Cancer Research Foundation and Long Island Cares. In 2017, Massapequa Park Mayor, Jeff Provato, even showed up to give support and was given the “Key To The Haunt”! This year they are donating to Melissa’s Wish, a non-profit organization founded with the purpose of providing short term, non-medical financial aid in the form of a grant to caregivers who are assisting those afflicated with a serious illness, injury or end of life event. This year they will bring the community a new interactive experience with the second Lost Souls Walk-Thru haunt, new rooms, new scares and new thrills! Stop by on October 12, 18-19, 25-26, 31 and November 1-2 from 7PM-11:30PM to see what it is all about! Additionally, they are still actively looking for volunteers in the following areas: Digital Marketing, Scare Team Members, Security and on their Bake Team. Volunteers must be 16 years of age and volunteer time can count towards community service hours! Sponsorship opportunities are also available. Lerner Selected As National Merit Semifinalist Northport High School senior Ayla Lerner was one of 16,000 students to be selected as a semifinalist in the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program on Sept 11 and during her congratulatory meeting, Principal Daniel Danbusy
said that he’s confident that she would progress to the final round. To be eligible, students had to score within the top 1% on a preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying test. Ayla was one of approximately 1.2
million students who completed the preliminary test and she will continue to compete for one of 7,600 National Merit Scholarships. The $2,500 scholarship would go towards her freshman year of college.
“It’s a testament to what you have put in,” Mr. Danbusky said, praising her on her work ethic. “It’s no surprise.” While Ayla has not yet selected her college of choice, she is speaking with several coaches to narrow
her selection down to one that has an exceptional rowing program. Ayla has been rowing for five years and is currently a member of the Long Island Rowing Club. She plans to continue that passion in college while majoring in
business. Ayla is currently copresident of the school’s Spanish club and an officer in the school’s “Academy of Finance” program.

Centereach sure does have its share of pizza places. However, Michael Anthony’s stands out for a couple of reasons! You won’t hear it from owner Michael Anthony Callari himself, but you will hear it from his many grateful patrons and recipients of his subtle but steady generosity. First, a little history. Way back when, his good friend Anthony owned Angelo’s pizza and needed some help. Michael stepped in to lend a hand. Michael performed many tasks but found himself with a real talent in the kitchen
learning to cook the many dishes. His path was set. He went on to manage Happy Time Pizza in Selden, which he then purchased in 1999 and ran until 2004. Eventually he sold it and thought he would be onto something new. After being out for a short while he realized pizza was where he needed to be! He went on to manage Capri Pizza in Centereach and then bought that restaurant in 2005, turning it into Michael Anthony’s in its original location. The restaurant moved locations eventually to where it is now, 2425 Middle Country Road between the Animal Hospital and
Ralph Rottens. The current location is a beautiful restaurant setting to sit and dine or even host a party! Michael, regardless of what stage of his career, has always stayed connected to the community; he sponsors events, donates pizzas and takes out ads. In addition I have learned of some other really nice ways he makes a difference in the lives of others. To honor his father Joe, an Army Veteran, he recently started catering the Veterans’ Ball, which is held each November in Patchogue. It is a sizable donation - he truly appreciates all those who served and takes great pleasure seeing them enjoy his food! Towards the end of each year, Michael also chooses a family who is struggling due to extenuating circumstances and provides them a full holiday meal. He often times even gives them a
substantial gift certificate so they can come in any time and get a good meal. He does this quietly but his grateful recipients tell all. When asked how he knows that a family is struggling he simply stated, “I am a good listener.” The recipient does not have to have been an existing customer, just a family who needs a little love at a difficult time. After all, having Italian heritage, love often comes in the form of a meatball! While visiting Michael Anthony’s I was able to speak with one of his employees. Darren couldn’t say enough about the great family atmosphere he experiences while working for Michael. Darren shared with me that he and Michael were friends when they went to Newfield High School. When Darren learned that Michael opened his own place he of course had to check it out. After a few visits and reconnecting,
Michael asked Darren, who was working in the cold corporate world, if he could help him out by making deliveries at night. Darren was more than willing to help. Part-time deliveries turned into a full-time job at the pizzeria for Darren. He enjoyed his job and the family atmosphere so much more there and was inspired by Michael’s success to take a chance at following his own passion. Darren went on to open Fur-Babies, offering pet sitting, training and grooming services. He continues to work at the pizzeria as well and couldn’t be happier. Now getting back to business, Michael’s business. The food is excellent and many people will also say so. However, being the crackerjack journalist that I am, I needed to investigate further. I had heard about the meatballs (fried not cooked), the chicken a la vodka (yes, chicken) and
the rice balls, but as I approached the counter I saw a simple, yet beautiful, white slice and I was sold. Delicious! I will, of course, be back to try more. His menu is quite extensive and I find it worth mentioning the roughly 20 entrees and bread he offers that are gluten-free. He even makes a cauliflower crust pizza. What struck me the most while listening to Darren’s story was how Michael was very happy to allow a story about him shift to include a friend. I also couldn’t help but notice the similarity in both men’s career paths. They both started by just helping out a friend, which led them to successful careers that they love. During his time spent in the Farmingdale and Smithtown school districts, Mr. Melore amassed more than 20 years of both teaching and coaching experience at the middle and high school levels. “I am very excited to be joining the Connetquot Central School District this year and am eager to begin working with our physical education, health and athletics staff members to further elevate the district’s programs and offerings,” said Mr. Melore. Mr. Melore graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education with a concentration in sport management from SUNY Cortland, a Master of Arts in physical education from Adelphi University and completed the Education Leadership Program at Dowling College.

After a comprehensive search process, Connetquot Central School District has welcomed Peter Melore as the district’s new director of health, physical education, athletics and recreation, effective this July. Mr. Melore comes to the Connetquot Central School District from the Three Village Central School District, where he served as the executive director of health, physical education, recreation and athletics for the past four years. Under his leadership, the district’s physical education and athletic program reached new successes, including state athletic championship titles, the introduction of advanced curricular programs and training initiatives to help staff further support student-athletes. Prior to Three Village, Mr. Melore worked as the director of physical education, health, intramural athletics and recreation in the Roslyn School District, where he implemented CPR certification in health classes, provided leadership training for athletes and oversaw the staffing, scheduling and budget of the entire department. In addition to his administrative experience, he also brings firsthand knowledge of best classroom practices to his new role in Connetquot, as he began his career as a physical education teacher at the Weldon E. Howitt Middle School in the Farmingdale School

Phantom Pride was on full display as BayportBlue Point School District residents of all ages joined together for the annual homecoming celebration on Sept. 21. To begin the day’s festivities, the district hosted an induction ceremony at BayportBlue Point High School to recognize former athletes and athletic contributors whose names and photographs have been added to the school’s Hall of Fame. The district congratulates coach Chris Burke, Jim Clark (’88), Kylie Cremer (’08), Christian Cremer (’10) and Bob Drzal (’65) for all of their successes and contributions to the athletic program.
Prior to the start of the big game against the Greenport/Southold/ Mattituck football team, students, families and community residents lined the streets leading up to Bayport-Blue Point High School and the surrounding area to celebrate the annual homecoming parade. As the student-athletes, cheerleaders, musicians and homecoming royalty made their way down the parade route, candy was tossed out of car windows for the younger students and roars of loud cheers for the home team rang out loud. With the sun shining brightly the Bayport-Blue Point High School varsity football team was geared
up and ready to face off against the visitors for their first home game of the season. The Phantoms played an incredible game throughout, and secured a homecoming win, as they defeated the visitors by a final score of 57-0. During the halftime ceremony, the junior class was named winner of the float contest with their excellent portrayal of the fall season, which was in line with this year’s theme of “Seasons of the Year.” Additionally, seniors Dominic Bonifazio and Andrew Shiebler were named homecoming cokings, while senior Megan Brockbank was named homecoming queen.

78 New Faculty Members The Sachem Central School District recently hosted a new teacher orientation program for 78 teachers and teaching assistants who will be joining the district for the 2019-2020 school year. To begin the informative program, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth Graham welcomed the new
educators and delivered remarks on the district vision. The educators were then introduced to district administration and members of the board of education. As the daylong orientation continued, those in attendance reviewed expectations for student achievement, instructional focus areas,

Student Athletes Receive High Honor Northport High School was honored on Sept. 5 as one of five Suffolk County schools to receive the New York State Public High School Athletic Association’s Sportsmanship Promotion Award for the 2018-19 school year. Mark Dantuono, the
district’s director of health, physical education and athletics, said that the award is granted to high school athletics programs that illustrate exemplary effort in displaying overall sportsmanship to the game, as well as their opponents, coaches and referees.
Mr. Dantuono said that each of the district’s varsity and junior varsity teams demonstrate sportsmanship by placing banners, promoting positive play throughout the high school’s hallways. “We’re trying to promote strong character and
commitment and really being respectful as a competitor,” he said. “Our kids are good kids. Our student athletes, they get it done.” Mr. Dantuono explained that districts are encouraged to apply for the award via an online application,
which is later reviewed by a state-wide committee to determine eligibility. He said that the Northport-East Northport School District stood out among the rest as it was recently recognized, for the second consecutive year, as a school of distinction by
the athletic association. The honor is given to schools, whose student athletes maintain an overall Grade Point Average of 90 or above. “That just added to our resume to be eligible for the state-wide recognition that we received,” Mr. Dantuono said.
In celebration of International Dot Day, fourth graders enrolled in Dina Pinelli’s class at Connetquot Central School District’s Edith
L. Slocum Elementary School used their artistic talents to create their very own dot-inspired paintings which will later be put on display for all to
admire. Motivated from their reading of “The Dot” by Peter H. Reynolds, the students began their artistic creations with a
simple dot of paint, which further blossomed into masterpieces resembling athletic equipment, dinosaurs and planet Earth once they added
splashes of watercolor paint. According to their website, International Dot Day aims to bring millions of people throughout
the world together to connect, collaborate, create and celebrate all that creativity inspires and invites.
