Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today announced the official launch of the “Experience the North Fork by Trolley” shuttle service that will operate for 10 straight Saturdays beginning September 9th and running through November 11th.

The scheduled service will be divided into two service phases: Phase one will service the Greenport loop from September 9th to October 7th, and Phase two will serve the MattituckPeconic loop from October 14th to November 11th.

“We are excited to introduce this new experiential trolley service on the North Fork to serve our residents and visitors,” said Suffolk County Executive Bellone.

“Suffolk County’s North Fork is quickly becoming a top tourist destination and it is as scenic as it is historic. Our goal is to share this experience with our residents and visitors in a stress-free fashion that is important to enhancing tourism in our region.”

The trolley service will cost $10 for standard allday pass, $3 for senior citizens, and kids under the age of three ride for free.

Customers are encourage to download the “Go North Fork” App to track the location of the trolley.

Tickets can be purchased in advance online at https:// www.hamptonluxuryliner. com/.

The trolley services will complement existing transit services such as ferries, the Long Island Rail Road, Suffolk Transit, and private bus services. In addition, they will provide an affordable and reliable connection between the North Fork’s unique downtowns, businesses and natural assets. Visitors will be able to leave their cars behind while experiencing North Fork wine country and the local farms, parks, B&B and shops that characterize this unique region.

The North Fork attracts visitors looking to experience its farms, vineyards, fisheries, restaurants, shopping,

and exceptional natural assets, including beaches, historic landmarks, and open spaces. As such, Suffolk County is supporting a $200,000 Empire State Development grant application to extend trolley services in 2018 for a full Spring to Fall season.

The application also proposed to extend trolley services into the Town of Riverhead.

Suffolk County Economic Development & Planning had been working with multiple partners in the region to help develop transportation options in the region that will reduce traffic and create convenient tourist experiences. These partners include the North Fork Promotion Council, the East End Tourism Alliance, the Long Island Wine Council, the Town of Southold, the Village of Greenport, and the Long Island Railroad.

Lending a Helping Hand

With so much loss and devastation left in Hurricane Harvey’s wake leaving Texas and its residents a long road of rebuilding and recovery, Homes By Mara Realty Founder, Owner and President Mara Navaretta of Woodbury and her team of agents have launched their own public Hurricane Harvey Non-Perishable Food & Paper Goods Collection Drive.

Now through Friday, October 13th, people are encouraged to drop off nonperishable foods and paper goods, such as toilet paper, paper towels and paper plates, at the designated collection drive box kept by the inside front door of the agency, located at its new headquarters at 30 Berry Hill Road in Syosset, NY. All items collected are being donated to the nonprofit organization Island Harvest, which will ship Homes By Mara donated items to Texas, where they will be disseminated to those impacted by Hurricane Harvey.

North Fork by Trolley

On September 7th, Supervisor Ed Romaine and Councilman Michael Loguercio celebrated the official opening of the new playground at Eagle Estates Park in Medford.

They were joined by NY State Assemblyman Dean Murray, who secured $100,000 in State funding for improvements to the park.

In addition, the Town was awarded a $300,000 federally-funded Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) to help pay for the improvements. The park improvements include a new playground, a pergola,

picnic tables, new fencing, irrigation and landscaping.

Assemblyman Murray said, “It is always a pleasure to work with my partners on the Town level, Councilman Michael Loguercio and Supervisor Ed Romaine, to fulfill our promise to the residents to reinvigorate a park that has been used by Eagle Estates families for years. Hats off also to the Town’s Parks Department for doing an incredible job.”

TOWN PAYS TRIBUTE - On September 11th, Supervisor Ed Romaine and the Town Board led a memorial service to honor all the people who perished sixteen years ago as a result of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and at Shanksville, Pennsylvania. The ceremony, which was held at the 9/11 Memorial Garden at Town Hall, also included the traditional ringing of the fire bell five times in memory of all the first responders who heroically gave their own lives in the line of duty.

The Longwood Estate was passed down through the generations dating back prior to 1817. In 1973, developer Wilbur Breslin and Herbert Carmel purchased the property for commercial and industrial development.

Brookhaven Town officials and area residents strongly opposed the plan and in

1974, Breslin and Carmel donated the manor house and 35 acres of land to the Town of Brookhaven.

VOTING RIGHTS COMMEMORATED - On Sunday, September 10th, Supervisor Ed Romaine, Town Clerk Donna Lent and Councilwoman Jane Bonner celebrated the 100th Anniversary of Voting Rights for New York Women at a parade and rally in Lake Ronkonkoma. Many of the suffragists dressed for the event in traditional clothing as it may have been in 1917. The rally, which was held at the American Legion Post #155 Hall, started with a ceremony that included songs, speeches, displays and historical information about the women’s suffrage movement on Long Island.

On September 9th and 10th, thousands of residents celebrated the return of the Longwood Fair at the historic Longwood Estate in Ridge. The event, which had not been held for the past four years, featured entertainment, traditional crafts, vendors, pony rides, primitive cooking, Irish step dancing, Revolutionary War re-enactments and more. with Jamie Lynn Ryan Autumn’s Eve And with that, summer’s final swan song is upon us, as the autumnal air seems to have taken up residence across this long island that we call home. Some will say the summer months flew by in the blink of an eye; others will say they dragged on unbearably.

How drastic are the differences in perception from one person to another.

It’s funny how things seem to move in fast forward once the school year gets underway.

Halloween decorations have been out in full force for weeks, with Christmas not far behind. That spring cleaning that we’ve been putting off until fall is now begging for our attention. As the leaves begin to turn, can outdoor cleanups be far behind as well?

In the entertainment world, gone are the evenings of summer concerts under the stars, replaced instead by nights spent in front of

the television as many of our favorite shows return from hiatus. That baseball season which once seemed endless on opening day in April is now nearing its final stretch, as playoff pictures begin to take shape. All this, while football season takes over, and each Sunday’s activities become dictated by the game schedule of your favorite team.

Soon enough, all roads heading eastward will be jammed with traffic as the masses scramble to take advantage of each beautiful autumn weekend. Pumpkin picking, apple picking, hayrides, corn mazes… so much to accomplish in so little time. And yet, there is always precisely the same amount of time. It’s all in how we choose to use it.

A good family friend of mine recently commented that we all tend to live as though we have this list of obligations

to complete, rather than taking a step back and simply experiencing each moment as it happens. There is very little we actually have to do; in fact, almost nothing is required within a particular time frame. And so, we can afford to relax a bit, to take our time transitioning, whether it is from one season to the next or something larger and more significant to our personal lives.

So, while the calendar may indicate autumn just a few days from now, that doesn’t mean we need to give up enjoying the warmth of the sun, or throw away our remaining summer plants in favor of mums and pumpkins.

All in good time. Autumn is a season of transition in itself, a cross-section of weather and activities, even fashion.

A season of plenty. Plenty to appreciate. Plenty to embrace.

Plenty to enjoy.

Both students will enter their research projects in the 2017 Siemens Competition for Math, Science and Technology.

Fall Luncheon Connetquot Retired Teachers Association (CRTA) President Peter Leis welcomed returning and newly retired teachers to the first luncheon of the 2017-2018 school year.

Held at Captain Bill’s Restaurant in Bay Shore, the CRTA held it’s annual business meeting and first fund-raising gettogether on September 13th. The CRTA grants two $1,000 scholarships to the children, or grandchildren, of retired Connetquot teachers, at its May luncheon. Over 75 retired Connetquot School District educators, spouses and friends, joined to

catch up on the news, enjoy a tasty lunch and continue the CRTA fundraising efforts.

LI Hops, a 43-acre farm located in the North Fork wine region of Long Island will again host the Long Island Fresh Hop Fest - the largest fresh hop fest on the east coast - on Saturday, September 23rd. Outreach Walk Set The 3rd annual Outreach/John Brower, Jr. Foundation 5K Walk at Jones Beach to raise funds and awareness on the opioid crisis on Long Island will be held Saturday, October 7th, beginning at 10 a.m. The event is held each year to honor the memory of John Brower, Jr., who died in 2014 of an opiate overdoes at age 25. Proceeds from the walk support Outreach, the Queens and Long Island-based organization dedicated to helping teens and adults fight drug and alcohol addiction.

The parents and children of John Brower, Jr. formed the foundation to heighten awareness

about substance abuse and to help raise funds to end the drug epidemic that has had an adverse effect on Long Island. After being introduced to Outreach shortly after their son’s passing, the Browers were impressed by the organization’s dedication to help those struggling with addiction.

They decided to target all the group’s fundraising for the agency. To date, the Brower family has donated more than $39,000 to Outreach.

“The Brower family is one of too many Long Island families who have experienced the heartbreak of opiate addiction,” said Kathleen Riddle, president of Outreach. “We join the

Browers in their mission to do all we can to raise awareness for teens and young adults so additional families do not have to lose a loved one to substance abuse. The Brower family has been tremendously generous and devoted to the cause. We are enormously thankful for their support.”

“It’s been more than four years since we lost our son,” said John Brower, Sr., “but his memory is with us every day as is our determination to continue fighting addiction. We will continue with these walks and our other foundation activities until we see a marked improvement in the heroin and opiate

problem that continues to affect our communities.”

Autism Speaks Walk The Long Island Chapter of Autism Speaks, the world’s leading autism science and advocacy organization, will hold its 2017 Long Island Autism Speaks Walk event on Sunday, October 1st, at Jones Beach - Field 5.

The Village of Mastic Beach, New York, has begun a complete village dissolution of all government assets including Village owned real estate. The decision comes after the referendum on November 16th, 2016, when the residents of Mastic Beach voted to dissolve the village; citing rising taxes as the most pressing issue pushing voters towards dissolution.

Students throughout the Connetquot Central School District came together as one on Patriot Day and paid tribute to the individuals who lost their lives on September 11th, 2001.

Staff and students at John Pearl Elementary School dressed in patriotic colors, recited the Pledge of Allegiance and sang patriotic songs. Principal

Susan White also joined the students in singing ‘Together, We Can Reach Our Goals,’ the John Pearl Elementary School song. Ms. White talked to the students about patriotism and heroes, past and present, including students’ parents, teachers, local firefighters and members of the police and ambulance services.

The process for selecting an All-State musician is rigorous and includes teacher recommendations, audition scores at the NYSSMA solo evaluation festival during the prior spring, and participation in other performing organizations.

Sachem Central School District High Schools North and East will be well represented at the 2017 New York State School Music Association’s AllState festival, as a total of 10 student-musicians were selected to perform during NYSSMA’s annual winter conference. The event will take place at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center in Rochester, New York, from November 30th to December 3rd.

From High School East, students Timothy Demott and Edmond Tomaselli will perform with the mixed chorus, while Cecilia Antonelle will sing with the treble chorus.

The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) is pleased to announce its upcoming 37th annual R. Brinkley Smithers Golf Invitational.

Only 60 percent of college freshmen will graduate within 6 years according to the latest report from the National Center for Educational Statistics. That’s pretty scary stuff for collegebound students and their tuition-paying parents especially if loans are part of the financial formula.

Even for those students who make it to graduation, there may be some question as to whether they made the most of their time on campus.

As this Northern Michigan University senior reflects, “There I was, about to graduate with some random degree and feeling like I’d wasted my parents money.”

And from a University of Florida senior: “The problem with college is that you figure it out about the time you’re ready to graduate.”

Tips for Teen Drivers

Earning a driver’s license is a milestone in a young person’s life. Teenagers typically take to the open road without adults riding shotgun between the ages of 16 and 18, depending on where kids live. Although this can be an exciting time for them, it’s also a time that can change the family dynamic.

Parents may have mixed feelings about their children getting their drivers’ licenses.

Although many parents recognize the convenience of having another licensed driver in the house, it’s understandable if moms and dads are weary about inexperienced children behind the wheel.

Such fears are not unfounded, as vehicular fatalities remain the leading cause of death for many teenagers. In the United States, teens are three times more likely to crash per mile driven than adults, according to data from Allstate. To help reduce the propensity for crashes, injury and death, families can work together

to focus on safe driving tips.

Take a safe-driving course. Any licensed driver can benefit from a safedriving course. Check with the department of motor vehicles to find an approved list of driving courses available. In addition to providing valuable safety tips, enrollment in these courses may entitle people to discounts on auto insurance.

Stay off of the phone.

Texting and making phone calls reduces alertness on the road. That loss of focus, even if only for a few seconds, can result in drivers driving the equivalent of an entire football field without having their eyes on the road. Avoid mobile devices while driving. Pull over to make a call if there is an emergency; otherwise, leave the phone out of reach in a backseat.

Use the headlights. Many cars now feature daytime running lights. For those that don’t, engage the headlights when driving.

Leave plenty of time.

Rushing around to make it to class or other appointments can lead to speeding and other dangerous driving habits.

By leaving extra time, drivers will not feel stressed or rushed.

Until they gain ample experience, teen drivers should keep passengers and noises to a minimum.

Stick to easy parking for now. New drivers can opt to park in spaces that have plenty of room or allow for pulling out (rather than backing out). This can improve visibility and reduce the risk of hitting other vehicles.

Driving is exciting for newly licensed teens. but parents must emphasize the importance of defensive driving to their young drivers.

Eco-conscious lifestyles may have transformed the ways people behave at home or on the job, but many schools have taken a little longer to embrace eco-friendly practices.

But that doesn’t have to continue, as younger generations of students are growing up green and ready to embrace some green strategies in the

classroom.

One of the easiest steps to take is to reduce paper usage. According to Edutopia, a K-12 learning and education resource, the average school uses approximately 250,000 pieces of paper per school year. This estimate is based on an average of 50 reams of paper per teacher at a 100-teacher school.

Instead of relying so heavily on paper, students can take notes on laptops or tablets while teachers can rely on smartboards and notebooks for classroom lessons. When paper must be used, make a concentrated effort to discard it in designated recycling bins in each classroom.

Today’s students have many new things to contend with as they navigate the school year.

As a greater number of schools transition to providing lessons, homework and tests on digital devices, students spend much more time online. This connectivity can have many positive results. However, the same availability also opens up students of all ages to various dangers.

One of these dangers is a more invasive form of bullying called “cyberbullying.”

The global organization DoSomething.org says nearly half of kids have been bullied online, with one in four saying it has happened more than once.

Cyberbullying has grown as access to computers and devices that offer an online connection has grown.

Bullying is now just as likely to occur online as it is on the playground.

Cyberbullies may bully classmates through email, social media, instant messaging, and other social applications. Since cyberbullying tends to target emotions and mental well-being, and reaches beyond the school campus into a student’s home, its impact can be even more serious.

According to the Megan Meier Foundation, which campaigns against bullying, peer victimization during adolescence is

associated with higher rates of depression, suicide ideation and suicide attempts. In the United States, suicide is the second leading cause of death for individuals between the ages of 15 and 24, according to data compiled from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Center for Behavioral Health Statistics, and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

Cyberbullying occurs in many different forms.

Here are some types of cyberbullying educators and parents can look for if they suspect their students or children are being bullied.

Flaming: This is a type of bullying that occurs in an online forum or group conversation. It’s achieved by sending angry or insulting messages directly to the person. Flaming is similar to harassment, but harassment usually involves privately sent messages.

Outing: This type of bullying is a sharing of personal and private information about a person publicly. When information has been disseminated throughout the internet, one has been “outed.”

Fraping: Fraping occurs when someone logs into another’s social media account and impersonates him or her. This could

be a child or an adult impersonating the person and posting inappropriate content in his or her name. Sometimes this type of bullying is also called “posing” or “catfishing.”

Masquerading: Masquerading occurs when bullies create fake profiles so they can harass someone anonymously.

The bully is likely someone the person being targeted knows well.

Exclusion: Sometimes direct targeting is not necessary. Students can be bullied simply by being deliberately left out, such as not being invited to parties or encouraged to participate online conversations.

Securing privacy online is one way to prevent cyberbullying attacks.

Students also can be selective about who they share personal information with or whose social media friendships they accept.

Thinking before posting and paying attention to language and tone can help curb cyberbullying as well. Students should stick together and report instances of cyberbullying if it becomes an issue.

Don’t hesitate from applying to a dream school. The Princeton Review defines dream schools as those colleges or universities where a student’s academic

credentials fall in the low end or below the school’s averages for students accepted the year prior. But even students who meet the academic requirements established by their dream schools may be hesitant to apply to such schools because of the cost of tuition. Students whose academic records fall just short of their dream schools’ criteria or whose financial means make attending their dream schools seem impossible should still apply to those

schools. Financial aid might be available, and schools might look at more than just academic performance, particularly for students whose grades fall just short of last years’ average accepted applicants.

Don’t be deterred by application fees. Stanford University’s application fee for 2017 was $90, making the school one of the more expensive colleges or universities to apply to. But many schools, including Stanford, waive those fees
