The Port Jefferson Chapter now located at 41 Horseblock Road in Centereach is one such chapter doing great things. Their core membership works diligently operating as a catering hall and hosting various events. It’s a beautiful hall, affordable and local. The food is always brought in by Villa Sorrento, ensuring a delicious quality meal every time! Many people in the surrounding area know it as a wonderful place to hold their special occasions but it seems they don’t always know about the Elks mission behind it.

NOW IS THE TIME TO MAKE YOUR MOVE WHILE INVENTORY IS STILL LOW Charity, Justice, Brotherly Love & Fidelity Pictured Above: The current officers of the PJ BPOE 2138 By Diane Caudullo Charity, Justice, Brotherly Love and Fidelity…those are the virtues that form the foundation of the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks Lodge. The Elks Lodge is an organization that started in New York City in 1868, which has grown to thousands of chapters and over a million members across the nation and is known for their charitable good works within their local communities.
Hundreds of thousands in total given out in our Elks district every year and any high school student is eligible to apply. The Elks even offer a night for potential applicants to come in and learn more about the scholarship and its application to better their chance of receiving it. This chapter’s funds get used for anything that a member brings forward which is good for someone or something within the community. Recently, American Vet Dogs in Smithtown was grateful to be the recipient; Veterans in general are always on the receiving end. Any Elk will tell you as long as there are Veterans, there will be assistance. However, they are willing to help out local food banks, medically fragile children, the disabled, etc. You name it, if there is a need, the Elks want to know about it and they want to help.
The Elks Lodge is structured as a social club, where membership has its privileges. Often members will meet for the camaraderie, a bite to eat and a drink. There is always something fun happening, be it a “Night at the Races”, steak dinners, family picnics or New Year’s Eve Parties; members and non-members are always welcome. All the money that they raise turns the fun times into the serious work. Every year, like many organizations, they give out scholarships to high school students. Unlike most local organizations, however, they give out a substantial sum of money. The Elks offers their Most Valuable Student Scholarships (MVS) in amounts ranging from $4,000 to $50,000.
Anyone can become a member and as all the current members will tell you, the more you get involved in the Elks Lodge, the more you will love the Elks Lodge, and the more you will get out of the Elks Lodge! Once an Elk always an Elk. To learn more, visit www.elks.org.

“As Suffolk County Sheriff my priority is keeping residents safe, and that extends to the fourlegged members of our communities. I would like to thank Paws of War for the work they do for our Veterans and for partnering with us on these free pet safety events. Pets that are both equipped with a microchip and enrolled in the Sheriff’s Lost Pet Network have double the chance of being reunited with their family,” said Sheriff Errol D. Toulon, Jr. Through Paws of War’s Mobile Veterinary Clinic, the nonprofit gives service animals access to microchipping at no cost. Veterinary costs for service animals and pets are near an all-time high. Thanks to Paws of War’s programs, veterans and first responders have one less expense to worry about. The wellness of service animals is essential and allows them to assist owners who are suffering from the emotional and physical effects of war. In addition to microchipping and Pet ID services, veterans also receive free dog food, leashes, collars and other amenities. For more information about Paws of War and their many programs, please visit, com/.suffolkcountysheriffsoffice.website,canSheriff’saboutFurtherwww.pawsofwar.org.informationtheSuffolkCountyDepartmentbefoundontheirhttps://www.
Paws of War recently hosted a microchipping and pet identification service event at the non-profit’s Nesconset headquarters alongside the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department’s Pet Network and Sheriff Errol D. Toulon Jr. The free event provided services to over 30 animals whose owners included veterans, first responders and members of the Long Island“Forcommunity.pet owners, especially veterans and first responders, their service animals are more than just pets; they are a support system and caregivers. During the summer it is easy for animals to wander and get lost. Through our microchipping and database program, and with the help of the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department, we can ensure that any lost pets will be found and returned safely to their rightful owners,” said Robert Misseri, Founder and President of Paws of War. The microchips, which are the size of a large grain of rice, are implanted under the animal’s skin behind the shoulder blades. For service animals, microchips are used to provide a permanent form of identification. The microchip can also identify and track an animal’s movements. In the event a service animal gets lost, you can use a microchip scanner to identify the pet’s owner. Through Paws of War’s database, owners can be contacted and have their animals safely returned.

Connetquot High School’s senior parking lot became a bright-colored canvas on Aug. 17 as seniors personalized their parking spaces during the school’s second annual Senior Paint Day. Carrying paint, rollers, brushes, stencils and design sheets, the students mapped out and created their designs individually and some with the help of family and friends. Student Government Vice President Mirza Mahim said more students participated in the event this year and that he was happy that everyone was having a great time. He explained that legally licensed participants purchased and chose a parking space for the school year at the end of the 20212022 school year. He also admitted that his design was a little more difficult than he intended, with a prospective business logo and Japanese lettering. Seniors Haylie Dorr and Cara Hodulick decided to collaborate on their themes, while Alyssa Ciccarelli, Matthew Plana and Jack Friedman combined their spaces to paint a huge American flag. Other seniors, like Samantha Tedeschi, decided to employ help from Class of 2022 graduates Kevin Lynch and Morgan Shurgin who assisted with painting of intricate details on a space of painted hands. The seniors are now looking forward to using their spaces as they drive up on the first day of school on Sept. 6.

More workers are returning to an office setting following more than two years of working from home and we need to do all we can to ensure they have access to excellent childcare.”According to the Governor’s office, thousands of families will now be eligible for childcare subsidies as part of a $7 billion expansion of childcare funding in New York State.

Middle Country Central School District Extended School Year Program
During the Extended School Year Program, students have the opportunity to go on bowling trips to the Centereach Bowling Alley and to the Middle Country Public Library. The outings encourage the students to focus on school work during the week and help students to become part of the community. It also provides an opportunity for general education students to volunteer their time during the summer in service to the special needs students and add to their community service hours.
Set For Labor Day Weekend, Saturday, September 3 & Sunday, September 4
The Westhampton Beach Festival of the Arts returns Labor Day weekend, Saturday, September 3 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday, September 4 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the Great Lawn across from St. Mark’s Episcopal Church at 35 Main Street. Admission to this remarkable fine art event is free. For the past decade, the visions and creative talents of artisans from throughout New York and across America in fine arts and crafts have transformed the Great Lawn into an extraordinary outdoor gallery of original art in such mediums such as sculpture, jewelry, painting, photography, glass, ceramics, mixed-media, metalwork, fiber art, woodworking and more. Represented will be artisans with works found in the top private and public art collections in the nation. All will be present to discuss how they were trained, how they are inspired, and answer questions about how your specific purchases were made. If you do not find exactly what you wish, consider commissioning a unique piece of art made specifically for you. For more information, visit www. paragonfestivals.com.
Middle Country Central School District students from Kindergarten through high school were afforded the opportunity to attend the District’s Extended School Year Program from July to August. The Extended School Year Program runs for approximately six weeks to maintain, support, and reinforce subjects in the school curriculum. Next year will make 10 years since the program opened. It has grown from 50 students to approximately 150“Thestudents.Extended School Year Program allows our students to continue all the skills they have worked on throughout the school year,” said Katie HaggertyAnkner, Coordinator of Special Education-PPS and principal of the Extended School Year Program. “The teachers and staff create opportunities for our students to grow academically, socially, and independently. An important part of the program is the community outings that provide reallife experiences for these students as they work hard to maintain their Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals.”

Historically high fuel prices will undoubtedly prove to be one of the defining stories of 2022. As the average price for a gallon of gas reached heights drivers might never have imagined as recently as February 2022, some might have wondered just how much that same gallon might have cost roughly 100 years ago. According to the Office of Energy Efficiency & Energy, the average price for a gallon of gas in 1929 was 21 cents. Inflation calculators indicate that 21 cents in 1929 would have about the same purchasing power as $3.59 has in 2022, suggesting that drivers had a far less painful trip to the pump in 1929 than they have had for much of 2022.

Connetquot Appoints Stephanie Burns Director Of Science, FACS And Technology
“My goal is to continue to support the excellent academic progress of the department by fully supporting teachers in their practices,” she said. Ms. Burns is a familiar face in the district. The Baiting Hollow resident has taught earth science and astronomy at Connetquot High School since 2005. Last summer, Ms. Burns served as director of the Connetquot Elementary and Middle School Summer ELA and Math Enrichment Programs. In the spring 2020, she served as a lecturer at the SUNY Stony Brook Department of Geosciences and is a former New York State Master Teacher Emeritus (2014-2017), a four-year appointed position, in which she led professional development for current and preservice earth science and environmental science teachers on Long Island. In 2019, Ms. Burns was named the STANYS High School Science Teacher of the Year, followed by a full-monetary reward to represent the United States as a geoscience teaching representative at the European Geophysical Union annual conference in Vienna, Austria. Prior to teaching, Ms. Burns was an on-air meteorologist with WKTV NewsChannel 2, an NBC affiliate, in Utica. In addition to teaching, Ms. Burns belongs to various educational organizations, including membership in the National Association of Geoscience Teaching, the New York Earth Science Teachers Association, the National Science Teachers Association and the Science Teachers Association of New York State in which she serves as an elected statewide director at large for earth science. She is also a science task force member for the district in which she is responsible for the implementation of New York State Science Learning Standards. She is also a volunteer with the annual Cornell Cooperative Marine Division Horseshoe Blitz, held each year at Westhampton Beach and is a partner in overseeing the Connetquot High School Wildlife and Ecology Garden. The district congratulates Ms. Burns on her position and extends best wishes for success in the 2022-2023 school year.

The Connetquot Central School District appointed Stephanie Burns director of science, family and consumer sciences and said she was excited to start the position as director and noted that already being a member of the staff is an advantage because of previous understanding of how the department works.

Strong communities are able to thrive thanks to the efforts of their residents, including those who give up their free time to volunteer with local charitable organizations. Though the impact of volunteers is often seen through the lens of the projects they help to initiate and complete, there’s no denying just how valuable volunteers are from an economic standpoint. In its 2018 “Volunteering in America Report,” AmeriCorps, an organization dedicated to strengthening communities and fostering civic engagement through service and volunteering, reported that Americans volunteered nearly 6.9 billion hours worth an estimated $167 billion in 2017. Volunteering figures to be even more valuable in the months and years ahead as towns, cities and countries look to recover from a global pandemic that claimed millions of lives and devastated economies big and small. As the world attempts to rebuild itself once the pandemic has ended, volunteers can play vital roles in reestablishing their communities. In fact, many people have already made that recognition. According to data from the professional social networking site LinkedIn, the site’s users had added more than 110,00 volunteer activities to their profiles between the early stages of the pandemic in 2020 and the end of summer 2020.
