Local Teens Earn Prestigious Girl Scout Gold Award

The Girl Scouts of Suffolk County recently celebrated local Girl Scouts who earned the prestigious Girl Scout Gold Award, including 7 members of Sachem North Service Unit 603, Sachem East Service Unit 618, Stony Brook Service Unit 652 and Setauket Service Unit 656. The awards were presented during the 2023 Gold Award Dinner, which was held at The Inn & Spa at East Wind and featured a keynote address by Rebecca Sanin, President and CEO of the Health and Welfare Council of Long Island. The Gold Award program recognizes the power and dedication shared by an elite group of young women who earn the highest honor a Girl Scout can achieve. The members of the Sachem North Service Unit 603, Sachem East Service Unit 618, Stony Brook Service Unit 652 and Setauket Service Unit 656 who achieved Gold Awards this year were Amanda Purga, Hannah Rinaldi, Arianna Schuman, Katherine

Turturro, Caroline Woo, Alexa Calvanese and Anna Munoz.

“The Gold Award is the highest distinction a young woman can earn in Girl Scouting and is earned by less than 6% of Girl Scouts annually,” said Tammy Severino, GSSC’s President & CEO. “Earning this award takes an extreme amount of dedication, hard-work and commitment from each of the girls. We are incredibly proud to celebrate this distinguished class of young women and the great efforts they have made for their communities.”

The Gold Award Girl Scouts each tackled a project that held a deep significance to them. To be eligible for a Gold Award, each recipient must complete two Senior or Ambassador Journeys, or their Girl Scout Silver Award before beginning their Gold Award project. To meet the Girl Scout Gold Award requirements, each candidate must complete at least 80 hours toward their project.

Amanda Purga provided inspirational words for those struggling with the residual mental and emotional stresses linked to the global pandemic at her high school.

For her project, Arianna Schuman refurbished two gardens for Angela’s House. Filling the gardens with

plants, trimmed bushes and added a sentimental rock garden with decorations.

Katherine Turturro created picture-based recipes for William Floyd School District’s special education students. She produced and donated 12 cookbooks to the Life Skills class.

Alexa Calvanese created “Don’t Stress, Worry Less” Youth Group room, a space

for neighborhood youth to congregate and improve interpersonal connections and mental health following the pandemic.

For her project, Anna Munoz built a calming garden center and Adirondack chairs for a local prevention center.

Caroline Woo created a more colorful, art filled center for children to be inspired by creativity.

Lightning Warriors To Host 4th Annual Mini Maniac Youth Triathlon

Lightning Warriors, a notfor-profit youth triathlon team, will be hosting its 4th annual Mini Maniac Youth Triathlon on Sunday September 17, 2023 at 7:00 AM at Cedar Beach in Mount Sinai, New York. This year’s Mini Maniac event will be geared toward triathletes of all levels between the ages of 7 and 17. While all racers will be participating in a youth triathlon, races will be divided into three separate age groups with swimming, biking and running distances varying accordingly. Younger athletes are also encouraged to register to participate in the Splash & Dash event, which is a 50-meter swim and a quarter-mile run for athletes between the ages of 5 and 7.

“I am excited to see the smiles and accomplishments as each athlete crosses the finish line and for those

first timers being called a triathlete,” says Lightning Warriors Head Coach Noah Lam.

All Mini Maniac participants will be able to take part in training clinics with the Lightning Warriors team in the months leading up to the triathlon. Favor bags will also be distributed to each racer, as well as medals for all finishers, awards for the top male and female finishers and postrace refreshments.

Participating in youth triathlons help build positive physical activity habits in children. According to Lam, “Every child should be able to swim, bike and run as those are lifetime skills… We’ve also seen that physical activity can provide immense benefits for mental health, more selfesteem, a sharper focus on achieving goals and a better ability to connect with other kids.”

Athletes’ individual skills will also be enhanced by being a part of a team in a healthy competitive and supportive space. “You get to find new ways to overcome adversity in a safe environment,” Lam states. These skills will thus motivate them to exuberate confidence and conquer their goals, both inside and outside of racing.

The Mini Maniac event is the largest sanctioned kids triathlon on Long Island with 135 participants in 2022, and an expected attendance of 200 racers this year. To register for Mini Maniac, visit www.runsignup.com/ minimaniac. Registration ends on September 15, 2023 at 1:30 PM EDT.

Mini Maniacs is also seeking volunteers for this event. Anyone who is interested may sign up at www.runsignup.com/Race/ Volunteer/NY/MountSinai/ MiniManicYouthTriathlon.

Connetquot Marching Band Prepares For 2023-2024 Season

Connetquot High School’s marching band lined the football field for their annual camp, preparing for the upcoming school year’s many performances.

Led by band directors Greg Johnson and Stacy Stollberger, the marching band’s student-musicians practiced marching basics and focused on learning and memorizing the music

and drills. The goal of the camp was to prepare for the home football game halftime shows and Newsday’s marching band festival, happening in the 2023-24 school year. At the

week’s end, the marching band students performed all they had learned for their parents in a preview show.

“We’re really proud of all the hard work the kids

are putting in. They’re sacrificing their summer vacation to get a head start on the school year,” said Stacy Stollberger. She also noted that the camp provided a great

Alzheimer’s Foundation Of America Promotes Ten Steps For Healthy Aging

It’s never too soon to practice healthy aging; the things we do to keep body and heart healthy— nutritious diet, physical activity, and social connections – also can help promote brain health and wellness. To help individuals be proactive about protecting their brain health, the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) is providing these 10 steps for successful aging.

“Lifestyle choices play a vital role in healthy aging and brain health, and it’s never too soon to start,” said Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr., AFA’s President & CEO. “Eating right, exercising the body and mind, getting proper sleep, and being socially active all contribute to healthy aging and good

brain health, and can potentially reduce the risk of developing a dementiarelated illness.”

AFA offers the following 10 steps for healthy aging:

Eat Well-Adopt a lowfat diet high on fruits and veggies, like strawberries, blueberries, and broccoli. Take daily vitamins. Limit intake of red meats, fried and processed foods, salt, and sugar. In general, foods that are “heart healthy” are also “brain healthy.”

Stay Active-Physical activity increases blood flow to the brain and can also help improve mood and overall wellbeing.

Brisk walking benefits brain health, while aerobics can boost your heart rate, and weight training builds strength

and flexibility.

Learn New ThingsChallenge your brain by starting a new hobby like playing tennis, learning to speak a foreign language, trying a cooking class, or something you have not done before. Even something as simple as brushing your teeth with your non-dominant hand stimulates the brain by forcing it to think outside of its normal routine.

Get Enough SleepGetting a consistent sleep every night is key; at least seven to nine hours is ideal. Having a good sleep environment is also helpful. Insomnia or sleep apnea can have serious physical effects and negatively affect memory and thinking.

Mind Your MedsMedication can affect

everyone differently, especially as you age. When getting a new medication or something you have not taken in a while (whether over the counter or prescription), talk to your doctor or local pharmacist.

Stop Smoking and Limit Alcohol-Smoking can increase the risk of other serious illnesses, while too much alcohol can impair judgment and cause accidents, including falls, broken bones, and car crashes.

Stay ConnectedSocial interaction and maintaining an active social life are very important for brain health, cognitive stimulation and mood. Invite friends and family over for a meal, board games, or just to hang out. Engaging in

opportunity for ninth grade students to meet upperclassmen and for those students to welcome them to the band department.

your community and participating in group activities is also beneficial.

Know Your Blood Pressure-Blood pressure can impact your cognitive functioning. Visit your physician regularly to check your blood pressure and make sure it is in normal range.

See Your DoctorMaintain checkups. Health screenings are key to managing chronic illnesses, such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and obesity, all of which can impact brain health. Speak with your physician about any concerns or questions you have about your health.

Get a Memory Screening-Our brains need regular checkups, just as other parts of our bodies do. Memory

screenings are quick, noninvasive exams for our brains. AFA offers free virtual memory screenings every weekday—visit www. alzfdn.org or call AFA at 866-232-8484 to learn more about getting a free virtual memory screening. You can also talk to your doctor about getting a screening as part of your annual wellness exam.

Individuals who would like to learn more about healthy aging, brain health, or memory screenings can contact the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America’s Helpline by phone (866232-8484), web chat (www.alzfdn.org), or text message (646-586-5283) seven days a week, or visit www.alzfdn.org.

Children With Special Needs Will Help Ultra Runner

Founder and CEO of Breakthrough Intensive Physical Therapy, Dr. Christine Astarita, will be running 100 miles within 24 hours on September 9th & 10th, 2023 while wheeling Breakthrough clients in an adaptive stroller to fundraise and aid support for the special needs community. Dr. Astrarita will be running from the Montauk Lighthouse to the Breakthrough office, stopping at the homes of the Angela’s House 501(c)3 along the route.

This is the second Run to Breakthrough fundraiser event that Christine and her team are hosting. Back in 2021, she ran 85 miles

Finish 100 Miles This September

while pushing some of Breakthrough’s clients from the Montauk Lighthouse to the Breakthrough office in Islandia, NY. With the help of the community’s donations and local businesses sponsoring the event, over $20,000 was raised for Angela’s House (Long Island based nonprofit organization that assists families caring for children with special health care needs, the chronically ill, medically fragile, or those suffering from a life threatening illness). This year, Christine will also be giving away THREE prizes to the top 3 families who create a team on the fundraiser’s website and

raise the most money to support the cause. The first place winner will be receiving a $3,000.00 credit towards their sessions at Breakthrough. The Second place winner will receive a $2,000.00 credit and the third place winner will receive a $1,000.00 credit towards Breakthrough PT sessions.

Reflecting on the last year’s challenges and experiences, Dr. Astarita decided that she wanted to make the theme of this year’s run, Resilience.

“These children and their families don’t get to choose their challenges. They face adversity every single day; worrying about medical

procedures, medication changes, disruptions in services, advocating for their child’s rights/being their child’s voice, long hospital stays… the list can go on and on. These families define resilience.

As I’ve said so many times in the past, our families and clients have taught me more than I could ever have given to them. 2021 was an 85 mile journey that although I may have been physically carrying our families through, they carried my heart. How?

Because they taught me that when it gets really hard, like really really hard…that you can’t stay in that forever.

They reminded me that challenges help us find the best versions of ourselves; They are what help us stay present, grateful, and remind us to continue to believe.”

Angela’s House is a NonProfit Long Island based organization that gives a helping hand to families that have children with special health care needs. They assist over 670 families that take care of their kids at home (providing medical equipment, nursing support, medications,

therapies, and making sure homes are handicapped accessible). Additionally, they provide a safe and nurturing environment in their three “Angela’s Houses” for those who are unable to live at home anymore (homes with 24 hour nursing care). 25 years ago, this organization was founded by the Policastro family as a result of the real life crisis they personally lived through, with their daughter Angela. Because they have first hand experience having a child with special health care needs, their approach and passion for helping other families is so ignited.

Fosters Wanted For Two Loving Pets

Due to unfortunate circumstances, the owner of two dogs is looking for a foster. She is presently living in her car, but is actively seeking employment and a new home. She is urgently trying to find an individual to temporarily care for both until she is able to do so again properly.

Wolf is a 10 year old Husky and Kay is a 5 year old Texas Heeler Mix. They are very attached to one another, therefore the foster must be willing to take both. They are friendly, trained, up to date on all shots, good with children and are spayed/neutered.

Wolfie does well with all

Become A Volunteer With The Adelphi Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program

dogs and cats and Kay is good with medium to large sized dogs.

Transportation of the dogs to your home for drop off and pick up would be provided. If you are interested or would like more information, please call Tanya as soon as possible at 914-309-5949.

PUZZLE ANSWERS:

Compassionate women and men—both breast cancer survivors and non-breast cancer survivors—are being sought as volunteers. The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program, is a non-profit that has been advocating and supporting the community for 43 years. The virtual training will take place on four consecutive Mondays: October 30, November 6, November 13 and November 20, from 10 am to 1 pm. Attendance at all four sessions is essential. Volunteers will be trained in the following areas: community outreach, educational presentations, speaking engagements, publicity and fundraising. Those who have had breast cancer will also be trained to respond to calls to the Hotline.

Here’s what some of the program’s community of volunteers have to say about their experience:

Jeannie, age 68, from West

Babylon; diagnosed in 1986.

I wanted to give back to the community and let women know they’re not alone. It was life-altering when I started volunteering 31 years ago. I speak Spanish and do lots of outreach, especially to underserved communities.

Lori, age 66, from Greenlawn; diagnosed in 2012

I am recently retired and wanted to do something to help people coping with breast cancer. I wish when I was diagnosed I had known about the hotline where there were others who had “been there.” Someone to tell me “take a breath, I’m here for you. I know what you are feeling.” I have done several library outreaches and am involved with our new book club.

Tanya, age 55, from Wyandanch; diagnosed in 2020

I received so much support when I called the hotline that I want to provide that kind

of help to others. I do peer support for two women— linking one woman recently diagnosed to resources and speaking with the mother of someone diagnosed with breast cancer who was having a hard time. I’ve also lobbied in Albany for more funds for the program.

Jeanne, age 51, from Elmont

Although I don’t have breast cancer, as a nurse, I know that many women do not know about breast health and are going undiagnosed. I am originally from Haiti and so am able to speak with callers in French and Creole, as well as English.

The process of becoming a volunteer involves having an initial interview, followed by the four training sessions. After the final session, there is an exit interview.

For more information, please contact Nina Foley, LMSW at: 516-877-4315 or email at: nfoley@adelphi.edu.

Open House, September 10th – Corporate Sponsorships Available

Pal-O-Mine Equestrian, Inc. (www.pal-o-mine.org, Islandia, NY), a private, not for profit organization providing a comprehensive therapeutic equine program using horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for children and adults with disabilities, announced that its annual Open House will be held this year on Sunday, September 10th, 2023 from 11 AM to 3 PM. Once again, the event will be a very family friendly one with activities that everyone will enjoy. Pal-O-Mine Equestrian is located at 829 Old Nichols Road, Islandia, NY 11749. “Our Open House is one the Long Island community always looks

Of course, we have also lined up many other activities including an art show and sale, horseshoe painting, donkey and mini horse cart rides, horsemanship demonstrations, a scavenger hunt, a paddock escape room, raffles, music and much more.”
