Recreating Movie Magic Students from both Tiffany Prin’s classes at Ronkonkoma Middle School and Danielle D’Erasmo’s classes at Oakdale-Bohemia Middle School recently brought some movie magic to their respective schools as they hosted a viewing of the film “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.” In order to recreate the movie theatre setting, students mimicked common jobs and duties associated with the theatre such as cashier, concession sales, usher and ticket collector for the attending guests.

The Social Brain is a brand new 501(c)(3) non profit in the state of New York. They are on the brink of breaking through as one of the most unique and helpful organizations that serves those suffering from a brain injury. Their mission is to provide brain injury survivors the opportunity to build friendships through socialization and reduced isolation.

This organization began in January 2019 when a group of individuals, families and professionals joined together to brainstorm ideas of how they can help brain injury survivors socialize and partake in various hobbies together. Many survivors spend much of their lives in and out of rehab and home feeling isolated, but The Social Brain formed to change that. After hosting various events for survivors such as a day at Sweetbriar Nature Center, a Bowling Event, a Library Day and an afternoon at Four Star Ranch, it was obvious that they were reaching a population in need. Just last month, The Social Brain was granted 501(c)(3) status in the state of New York and they have just started working out of a community center located at 202 Middle Country Road in Middle Island.

The Social Brain operates solely on volunteers and their outreach comes not only from word of mouth, but from help through their recent partnerships with local hospitals, school districts, neurology

departments, Peconic Speech Services in Riverhead and St. Joseph’s College.

Survivors from all over Long Island are welcome to get involved with The Social Brain. On average, each event they host has about 30-40 participates and there is no age restrictions.

The Social Brain would like to thank all who came out to the Basket Night Fundraiser on Friday, August 16th. They raised $2,600 and received another $900 in corporate donations! Additionally, they just wrapped up their East End 4-Week Social Skills Sessions. These were successful and helped children and young adults from Patchogue to as far east as Sag Harbor. They completed fun projects and encouraged a team approach to complete each week’s classes. They would like to give a special thanks to Peconic Speech Services of Riverhead for collaborating with their organization to host these classes. Keep your eye out for another set of classes coming during this upcoming school year.

Hundreds of walkers, from brain aneurysm survivors to their families and supporters, are expected to attend Long Island’s 11th annual Brain Aneurysm Awareness Walk at Jones Beach State Park on Saturday, September 21.

The fun-filled event, which includes a fourmile run and two-mile walk, is hosted by the Brain Aneurysm Center at Northwell Health’s Institute for Neurology and Neurosurgery, along with the Brain Aneurysm Foundation (BAF).

Proceeds will benefit both organizations, raising funds to support essential research.

“Thanks to hundreds of participants, we have raised $700,000 since the walk’s inception and it continues to grow steadily each year,” said David Chalif, MD, director of Northwell Health’s Brain Aneurysm Center. “It is a time for brain aneurysm survivors and their families to celebrate life and also a time to remember those who have lost a loved one to a brain aneurysm.”

At this year’s walk, one of the guest speakers will

be Greg McGeady, 34, of Clifton Park, NY, who lost his older brother to a ruptured brain aneurysm last year. Other guest speakers will include two brain aneurysm survivors: Luisina Alonzo, 22, of Bellerose and Cynthia Mathis, 40, of New Hyde Park.

One of the goals of this annual event is to increase awareness about the warning signs of a brain aneurysm. The symptoms can include severe headache, nausea, blurred or double vision, stiff neck or neck pain, pain above or behind the eye and loss of sensation.

Registration for the walk begins at 8:30 a.m. at Jones Beach State Park, Field 5, 1000 Ocean Parkway, Wantagh. The start time is 10 a.m. and the event will be held rain or shine.

The fee is $25 through September 9; $30 afterward.

Entry fee includes the cost of parking and snacks. T-shirts will be handed out on a firstcome, first-serve basis. To pre-register for the walk, click here.

Connetquot Soccer Players Nearly 200 Connetquot Central School District first through twelfth grade student-athletes recently completed the eighth annual soccer camp held at Connetquot High School.

Seventh-through12th graders attended the morning program while first-through-sixth graders attended the evening session. Each day began with a series of stretching exercises followed by skill drill stations and team play.

The campers and coaches also played a variety of games designed to keep the players sharp and motivated along the way. Current and former

varsity soccer players took part in the program as well as coaches and mentors, offering valuable advice along the way.

Additionally, both campers and parents had the opportunity to welcome the upcoming new varsity boys soccer coach, Francisco Herrera, who took part in this year’s camp and looks forward to the upcoming soccer season.

Battle Of The Books The 23rd Annual Suffolk County Battle of the Books took place on Saturday, August 10 and Monday August 12 at the Student Activities Center in Stony Brook University. This inter-library competition is for those entering grades 6-9 and focuses on 8 young adult novels. The battle promotes a love of reading, individual and team building skills, and the opportunity to have fun while competing with peers. The Connetquot Public Library teens, under their team name, Clown Protection, participated in this event.

After last year’s first place finish, the team was excited for another challenge. The

competition is divided into three back-to back 4-hour Regional Competitions and Finals Night. At the regional competition, each team participates in 4 separate rounds. Each round covers 2 of the 8 books and each team is given 20 questions per round. This year’s novels were Side Tracked by Diana Harmon Asher, Circus Mirandus by Cassie Beasley, Greeting from Witness Protection by Jake Burt, Winterhouse by Ben Guterson, Found by Margaret Peterson Haddix, Vanished by James Ponti, Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli, and Save Me a Seat by Gita Varadarajan and Sarah Weeks.

Teen Librarian Angela Breslin and Children’s Librarian Dina Oliveira conducted a number of practice sessions, coaching and encouraging team members.

All of their efforts paid off with a first place finish in Saturday’s evening session with an overall score of 72/80.

On Monday evening, the team once again, through their commitment and diligence, won first place in the finals. The team received a plaque which will be on display and also enjoyed a celebration at the library to commemorate their success. The library is extremely proud of their hard work and accomplishments.

Jeremy Mutschler Appointed Senior Marketing Director Of NYCBS New York Cancer & Blood Specialists (NYCBS) is proud to announce the appointment of Jeremy Mutschler, an experienced marketing expert, as its Senior Director of Marketing. Mr. Mutschler’s marketing experience is truly unmatched as the former founder and managing partner of Promotions Associations Inc. for more than 20 years. In addition, Mr. Mutschler served as the Director of Operations for International Student Exchange, a non-profit organization which places high school students from more than 40 countries around the world with volunteer host families throughout the United

States.

Mr. Mutschler earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing from St. John’s University, and his Master of Business Administration (MBA) with concentration in Marketing Management from Dowling College.

Additionally, Mr. Mutschler taught Marketing and Advertising as an Adjunct Professor.
