Not So Fast By: Jamie Lynn Ryan The autumn season is upon us. Well, at least in terms of retail, it is. As far as I’m concerned, there is still nearly one entire month of potential beach weather before us. No matter how many pairs of cute boots I see in stores, or autumn-scented candles and pumpkin-flavored everything, I remain in denial. Not yet.

Maybe in a week or two…or three. What’s the big rush? For a region that happens to be blessed with all four seasons, we sure don’t take too much time to appreciate them.

We rush everything, much like our days, our weeks, our lives…and for what?

To start complaining about the chilly weather and the inevitable snowstorms looming?

As long as I can get away with wearing flip-flops, and running outside with no jacket on, you can bet I will. Longer days mean more time to do things too, instead of rushing home from work to hibernate on the couch in front of the TV. Although, I must say, I am looking forward to my shows returning for the Fall season.

That said, the one regret I have about summer

“ending” is that all the catching up I was planning to do on various series and books, well, it just didn’t happen for one reason or another. Oh well. That’s what rainy days are for, I suppose. That and – dare I say it – any upcoming snow days??

In the meantime, try to enjoy this “last” week of summer – and maybe even the next few weekends as well. There will be plenty of time for raking and shoveling and all that later on. Soak up the sun – and the summer – while you can.

Preparing For Celebration Honoring nurses who served in the military, the gathering of oral histories and displays of retrospective memorabilia are all part of Suffolk County Community College’s School of Nursing’s plans for a celebration beginning this fall and culminating with the school’s 50th pinning ceremony next May. The Suffolk County Community College School of Nursing boasts more than 7,100 alumni, is the largest program in New York State and the sixth largest in the nation.

The School of Nursing is asking all alumni to contact the College to become part of a celebration leading up to the 50th pinning ceremony on May 15th, 2015.

All those volunteering to help organize the event will be designated alumni ambassadors and deputized to help spread the word about the anniversary and its significance.

“We are very proud to graduate nursing professionals who have worked in our communities for a half century,” said College President Dr. Shaun L. McKay. “One of our College’s highly competitive programs and the largest in the state, our nursing program’s excellence is directly

attributable to our faculty, staff, and students who are committed to nursing education. We are also very proud that a majority of our nursing graduates remain right here in our region where they serve with pride and distinction.”

“Our nursing student body is diverse and highly motivated,” said College Associate Dean, School of Nursing Dr. Cheryl Shaffer, “they graduate as nursing leaders committed to helping individuals, families and communities.”

“The 50th pinning ceremony and events leading up to next May’s event will provide an excellent opportunity for the thousands of alumni who graduated from our School of Nursing to reconnect with their friends, former professors and college community,” said Dr. Sylvia A. These five experts answer questions about stuttering, refute myths and misconceptions, and present examples of therapy sessions showing how stuttering can be reduced.

More than three million Americans stutter, yet stuttering remains misunderstood by most people,” said Jane Fraser, president of the Stuttering Foundation.

“Myths such as believing people who stutter are less intelligent or suffer from psychological problems still persist despite research refuting these erroneous beliefs.”

The 38-minute DVD,

entitled Therapy in Action: The School-age Child Who Stutters, produced by the 67-year-old nonprofit Stuttering Foundation is available free of charge to public libraries nationwide. Stuttering is a frustrating and embarrassing problem for millions of people, but it can be especially tough on elementary school-age children.

Help is available for parents, teachers, and speech-language pathologists at most public libraries in the form of a DVD designed to help school-age children who stutter. Some libraries have an older video version.

“We all can’t lose sight of the fact that this campaign has made a tremendous impact toward funding research, providing patient services and promoting awareness about ALS,” the County Executive said.

On Thursday August 14th, Legislature John Kennedy attended the Holiday Inn Check Presentation for Stony Brook Children’s Hospital. $20,000 was donated to the hospital’s building fund.

The new Stony Brook Children’s Hospital will be completed in 2016; it will be housed in a new

10-level Hospital Pavilion adjacent to Stony Brook University Hospital The expansion will feature a pediatric intensive care unit, adolescent unit, procedure suite, hematology/oncology unit, medical/surgical units and modern patient and family amenities; new adult critical care and cardiac

care units; an expanded imaging department; and increased support space throughout.

The Hospital has a building fund goal of $25,000,000; so far, a total of $9,980,670 has been donated to the building fund.

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone took the ice bucket challenge Sunday, August 17th, to support the ALS Association.

He was nominated to join the fundraising effort

by Town of Islip Supervisor Tom Croci. The County Executive dumped a large bucket of ice water on his head, while two of his children contributed by pouring their own buckets of water onto his head.

Thousands of people, including such celebrities as Bill Gates, Oprah Winfrey and Jimmy Fallon, have had buckets of icy

Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center honored Sally Rose and Charlene Lehmann at the Tournament of Tournaments Golf Outing on August 14th at Island Hills Golf Club in Sayville.

The weather cooperated by giving a perfect blue sky for 192 golfers. The fun continued into the evening, with over 250 guests in attendance, enjoying the sounds

of calypso music and delicious cuisine. Having the opportunity to dine on the deck, overlooking the golf course, made the perfect backdrop to compliment the end of a terrific day.

Through the generous support of the community, over $298,000 dollars were raised for the Hospital.

The funding will enable Brookhaven Hospital to continue moving forward

with a 60,000 square foot, $60 million dollar expansion project that will include additional cardiac catheterization laboratories and four new operating rooms.

Out For Blood

On August 15th, Legislator John M. Kennedy Jr., Councilman Kevin Lavalle and Mayor of Lake Grove Robert Scottaline joined forces to host the First Annual Lake Grove Blood Drive held at the Community Center located at 980 Hawkins Avenue in Lake Grove.

This new event was the latest stop to Legislator Kennedy’s 2014 “Out For Blood” Blood Drive Tour which has already made stops in Smithtown, Centereach, Commack and Hauppauge. As always registered professionals from New York Blood Center were on site diligently collecting blood

donations. New York Blood Center was established in 1964 and is one of the largest communitybased, not for profit blood collection and distribution organizations in the United States.

This inaugural event was an incredible success as a total of 30 units or pints of blood was collected from 20 whole blood donors and 5 donors via the ALYX Component Collection System.

“The initial Lake Grove Blood Drive proved a major success and shows at lot of promise for future blood drives in the Lake Grove community,” said Legislator Kennedy.

Welcome Home

On Friday, August 15th, Supervisor Ed Romaine and Councilwoman Connie Kepert attended the Homecoming Celebration for Sgt. Kurt Schramm of the United States Marine Corps at Bartlett Pond Park in Middle Island.

Sergeant Schramm, a 2008 Longwood High School graduate, was deployed to Afghanistan in September 2011 as a part of the CLB-1’s wrecker section in charge of maintaining and operating the Marine Corps’ Heavy Recovery vehicles, the M88A1 Hercules Vehicles. He was honorably discharged from 29 Palms, California this summer after two tours in Afghanistan. Sergeant Schramm’s name appears on the Longwood Global War on Terror Memorial at Bartlett Pond Park. The

memorial is dedicated to the brave men and women from Longwood who have served our nation in Operation Desert Storm, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.

Joining in Friday evening’s homecoming celebration were the Middle Island, Coram and Ridge Fire Departments, the local VFW, members of the Longwood Alliance, and Middle Island Pizza, which graciously donated dinner.

“It was an honor to join in the celebration welcoming Sgt. Schramm back home and I thank him for serving our country in defense of freedom,” said Supervisor Romaine. “The men and women of the armed forces deserve all the accolades we can give them when they

return, but what matters most is that they are safely back with their loved ones.

I wish Sgt. Schramm and his family the best of luck in the future.”

“Kurt Schramm is a Marine who served two tours of duty in Afghanistan and was recently honorably discharged. He arrived back home on Friday and, thanks to his wonderful parents, girlfriend, Stephanie Noulis, and the organizational abilities of Ms. Gail Bailey, his welcome home was nothing less than outstanding,” stated Councilwoman Kepert.

“The entire community came out to welcome Kurt home and thank him for his service. It was a wonderful home town event for a home town hero.”

Island’s beaches, sky, and farmland. A native of Center Moriches, New York, Patricia Feiler’s family has a strong tradition in writing, music and art.
