Buddy the Birthday Boy By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I’m baaaaack!

The human is busy putting the finishing touches on Seasons™ Magazine this week, so she asked me to fill in yet again.

From what I’ve heard, readers absolutely loved my last column and have been writing in regularly to check on my wellbeing.

Thanks for the love, and all the “half-birthday” wishes.

So how does it feel to celebrate six months in the bowl, you ask? Not too shabby. I received my very first birthday present in the form of a gift card to Pet Smart, and the human says I can pick out anything I want. I’ll have to give it some thought. I hear they

have even bigger plants than the one I currently reside with, or maybe a castle… or a seashell to sleep in… the possibilities are endless.

My one gripe is that, after weeks of this birthday talk, there was no cake – not even a cupcake, a cookie, a crumb… nothing. I thought I was finally going to sample a morsel when the human’s “Mommy” came over and tempted me with a Flying Saucer ice cream sandwich. How yummy those chocolate crumbs looked.

But, alas, the rogue flake was snatched from my waiting jaws.

What a tease.

That aside, the day was very enjoyable, with much

singing and celebrating in honor of me and all my finned glory. And well it should have been. I am, after all, the most lively addition to that drab little apartment, if I do say so myself. I even complement the throw pillows and accents. I am, to put it quite simply, the finest accessory in the place.

I suppose I should also note that my milestone was shared by the human – something about turning 33 I think. That seems like an awfully big number.

Maybe that’s why she’s so tall. Such are some of the thoughts I ponder as I swim my daily 437 laps around the bowl…

The Suffolk County Legislature’s inaugural summer Page Program concluded August 7th with a graduation ceremony held in the Rose Y. Caracappa Auditorium of the W.H. Rogers Legislature Building in Hauppauge. Fifteen high school and college students completed the internship program.

Playing for Peace Gershow Recycling sponsored and donated $2,000 to help defray the costs of putting on the seventh annual Play for Peace/Jugando Por La Paz Soccer Tournament, which was held August 8th at the Patchogue-Medford Youth Soccer Complex in Medford.

The goals of Play For Peace were to bring together diverse nationalities within the community for a full day of World Cup-style soccer and to use sports as a way for people from different ethnic backgrounds to find common ground. This year’s tournament was organized by the Office of Suffolk County Legislator Robert Calarco.

The Play for Peace Soccer Tournament was first organized in 2009 through the office of thenLegislator Jack Eddington in conjunction with the Patchogue-Medford Youth Soccer League as a response to the Marcelo Lucero tragedy. In 2011, when Legislator Calarco was elected, he carried on the tradition of presenting the tournament. Joselo Lucero, Marcelo’s brother, spoke to the crowd about the importance of having an event such as this to bring the community together.

Approximately 500 spectators came to this free event. Twelve teams — eight men’s teams and four women’s teams

— participated in the tournament. In the men’s division, the PatchogueMedford Congress of Teachers was the winning team, while Rudi’s Bar & Grill won the women’s division.

The Team Sportsmanship Award went to the North Shore Youth Council.

“Gershow Recycling is pleased again to support this year’s ‘Play for Peace.’

We salute former Legislator Eddington for establishing this event and Legislator Calarco for continuing it, as an effort to bring members of our diverse communities together and build understanding through sports,” said Kevin Gershowitz, President, Gershow Recycling.

MAKING A NAME - Tyler Zere, 12 years-old, is making a name for himself this summer in golf. He came in first place in his age group in a golf tournament “Cape Cod Shoot Out” at the Hyannis Country Club Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Eastern Suffolk BOCES students from Premm Learning Center invited representatives from Last Chance Animal Rescue to their school to present them with food, towels, treats, and cleaning supplies for rescued cats and dogs.

One-by-one, students approached the volunteers and placed their donation in a bin labeled “Clifford’s Pet Supply Drive.” The donation drive was named after Clifford because all the students are familiar with the Clifford the Big Red Dog book and how he was the runt of a litter of

puppies and rescued by a little girl.

Andrea Allen, a volunteer from Last Chance Animal Rescue, said, “We rescue animals from high-kill shelters in North and South Carolina. A sanctuary was established in Carlisle, South Carolina by the organization’s founder, Whitney Knowlton, who has since relocated from Southampton to the Carolinas to be closer to where the animals are and be more “hands on.” There are approximately 150 dogs and 100 cats living in the sanctuary.

Allen said, “We transport

animals every week and hold adoption events across Long Island.” The organization has adopted out over 1000 animals a year.

Students learned that the Last Chance Animal Rescue has a Rescue Ranger Program for kids ages 6-16. They learn empathy, responsibility, and how to care for an animal.

“We are so happy to receive the donations from the students at Premm.

Every bit counts,” said Allen.

DRILL CHAMPIONSHIP HELD - On August 15th, the New York State Drill and Parade Championship was hosted by the Selden Fire Department. The Drill was held at the Firefighters Training Facility in Ridge. Sixty-eight fire departments from all over New York State participated in the annual event.

CHAMPIONSHIP PARADE - Local elected officials recently participcated in the New York State Firefighters Championship parade, hosted by the Selden Fire Department. The parade was a conclusion to a weekend-long drill tournament and carnival at the Brookhaven Town Fireman’s Park in Ridge. At the parade, firefighter Joe Parente was recognized for 50 years of service with the Selden Fire Department.

Street Renamed On August 12th, Mayor Allan M. Dorman, Village of Islandia, invited family members of former Village Court Clerk Linda Sheahan to a special dedication ceremony in which Silverleaf Lane was renamed Linda R. Sheahan Lane in her memory.

Ms. Sheahan began working in the village in 1987. In addition to her

duties as a Village Court Clerk, she worked as Deputy Village Clerk and Deputy Registrar. She was remembered for being very knowledgeable in the Building Department and her willingness to help the residents in the village.

In 2008, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She fought a long battle against the

disease until her passing on July 27th, 2014. Her sister, Marilyn Griffaton, currently serves as Deputy Village Clerk.

Ms. Sheahan and her husband, Dennis, lived on Silverleaf Lane for 35 years. That is where they raised their three children: twins Carrie and Kristine and their daughter Denise.

National Dog Day Celebration The Islip Animal Shelter and Adopt-a-Pet Center will be celebrating National Dog Day on Wednesday, August 26th by offering free dog adoptions. Live.

Love.Bark Dog Rescue, the shelter’s non-profit volunteer group, will pay any dog adoption fees for those approved for adoption providing the application is filed on August 26th.

Applications may not always be approved the same day. The standard adoption process will still apply.

individuals who rent will be required to provide a notarized letter from their landlord stating they are allowed to house and care for a dog, regardless of any breed or weight restrictions.

“This is a great opportunity for families to come down and celebrate National Dog Day by adopting one of our many amazing dogs currently awaiting their new forever home,” said Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter. “Not only are you saving money, but

you’re also saving the life of your next best friend.”

Dog adoption fees are normally $111, per dog, which covers the cost of the spay or neuter surgery, vaccines, town dog license and a micro-chip. The shelter currently has about 80 dogs for adoption ranging in breed and size.

Students at Eastern Suffolk BOCES Premm Learning Center in Oakdale found people who were kind and understood them, downtown at Premmville, just like Petula Clark said they would.

The fantastical town created in the center of the special education center was geared toward heightening community awareness and giving the students exposure to people and places.

The planning committee decided that Premmville would need a post office, grocery store, pet store, clothing store, art gallery, and bakery. With that information and some creativity and ingenuity, the occupational and physical therapists (OT/ PTs), and speech, language, and special education teachers built it!

The town was centered on a park which included a

slide, swing, fishing pond, and ball field. Created by the OT/PTs, the park targeted the development of fine and gross motor skills, as well as gait training.

At the grocery store, students received a grocery list and grocery bag. They used the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) to identify the grocery items. After they matched the item with the product, they received a stamp on the grocery list to show they completed the task.

All of the stores utilized assistive technology so every level of developmentally disabled student could participate in the activities. The bakery had a blender and related utensils, the department store had a sensory mirror, the pet store had a variety of animals that walked, chirped, and barked, the

art gallery had a switchactivated coloring device, and the post office had a switch-activated pony which was symbolic of the “pony express.”

A bottomless, nowheeled postal truck was created with cardboard, duct tape, aluminum foil, paint, and a faux steering wheel so ambulatory and non-ambulatory students could have the opportunity to “drive” it. The truck was made to fit over a wheelchair.

Each student received a Premmville Community Tour Card which got stamped after they visited each part of downtown.

The tour card doubled as a souvenir of their trip and experiences.

Petula Clark was right, things were great and there was no finer place, for sure, for the students in downtown Premmville.

The Child Care Council of Suffolk, Inc. (CCCS) is pleased to welcome Judy Willner to their Board of Directors. A Huntington Bay resident, Willner has lived on Long Island since 1972, and since 2000, has worked in the Sachem community as director of the Sachem Public Library.

During her tenure as Sachem Library’s director, she was instrumental in designing a complete renovation of the Library’s children’s area based on the latest research

in child developmental needs. “Early childhood education and positive interaction with a parent or caregiver is fundamental in the development of an informed, engaged, vital community,” Willner stated. “Working with the Child Care Council of Suffolk is a logical extension of my advocacy for early childhood education. I am delighted to join the Board and to support their fine work as advocates for the children of Suffolk County.”

A graduate of Emmanuel College in Boston, with a Masters in Library Science from Simmons College, and an Advanced Certificate in Library Administration from C. W Post, Willner has been an officer of professional organizations on a county, state and national level.

She recently received the 2015 LDA Publishers Award in recognition of her outstanding service to the libraries of Long Island. She was also the 2015 recipient of the annual Heart and Soul Award by the Ronkonkoma Chamber of Commerce.

In 2014, Willner was awarded the Town of Brookhaven Division of Women’s Services award as Outstanding Woman in Education.

In addition to serving on the CCCS Board, Willner is a member of the Holbrook Chamber of Commerce, the Greater Ronkonkoma Chamber of Commerce, the Farmingville Hills Chamber of Commerce, the Macarthur Business Alliance and the Friends of Sachem Public Library.

Everyone has moments when the support and understanding of others seem hard to find, and it is for such moments that RESPONSE of Suffolk County, Inc. was born. RESPONSE of Suffolk County is a nationally accredited, non-profit agency that provides a confidential and anonymous hotline for anyone who needs to talk. RESPONSE is seeking volunteer crisis counselors and will offer a free training program to those interested in becoming the caring voice on the other end of the line.

Part one of the training program will be held on Saturday, September 26th and Sunday, September 27th, and continues on Saturday, October 3rd and Sunday October 4th.

Sessions will run from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. each day and trainees must attend all four sessions. Training will take place on the campus of Stony Brook University.

No experience is necessary, only a sincere willingness to learn and grow, and the ability to make a six-month commitment of four hours a week is required.

Response provides two types of telephone assistance lines and both are heavily dependent on volunteer talent. The crisis intervention hotline takes over 18,000 calls each year about a wide range of subjects – substance abuse, domestic violence, depression, family conflict, grief, suicidal thoughts among many others. The support line provides over 4,000 telephone “visits” yearly to individuals who

are homebound or have limited social support due to a physical disability or mental illness. Training for both the hotline and support line counselors includes lecture, roleplaying exercises, and private and group supervision. College credit is available and bilingual volunteers are especially needed.

For the 46th consecutive year, the Fuoco Memorial Golf Feastival will benefit Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck.

This year’s event will take place on Thursday, September 17th, at the Bellport Country Club, and again is sponsored by the Patchogue Rotary Club.

One hundred percent of the proceeds go directly to Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck to provide hundreds of special-needs children and young adults with a unique summer respite experience. Rotary Club member Steve Fuoco serves as chairman for the tournament, along with a very active committee of Rotarians, family and friends.

Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is a summer camp on the east end of Long Island serving children and young adults ages six to 21 with physical and developmental special needs. Its mission is to provide campers with a daily or sleepover experience inclusive of medical care, along with activities such as swimming, rowing, campfires and tending to an animal farm, all while developing lifelong friendships that they may otherwise never have the

opportunity to enjoy.

The Fuoco family has a longstanding connection with Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck as Beth Ann Fuoco-Santos attended the camp for many years. To this day, the Fuoco family continues to be involved in the camp, with Steve Fuoco as President of the Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck Patrons Group. In addition, Steve’s children Katy Fuoco-Hill and Jimmy Fuoco assist in running key operations of the Golf Feastival.

Since 1969, the Fuoco Memorial has donated nearly $1,300,000 to the camp, and built a 13-bed dormitory for the campers.

This year’s honorees are Marcella Weiss and the memory of her sister, Marie Frey, who were the founders of the popular “Spooky Walk,” which has raised over $1.5 million for the camp to date. As co-owner of Kurt Weiss Greenhouses in Center Moriches, Mrs. Weiss and her family continue to donate supplies and manpower to the camp.

Unique to this tournament are the nine “Feastivals” presented throughout the course.

Walk a Day in Our Shoes Angela’s House, sponsored by Long Island Applebee’s locations, will be hosting their 1st Annual 3K Walk at the Holtsville Ecology Center on Sunday, September 13th.

Join for a family day of fun! Walkers, wheelchairs and strollers are welcome!

Over 100 of the children will be walking and rolling along with their parents, siblings, family, friends, nurses and other supporters. Invite your friends and family and create a team to raise awareness and funds for Angela’s House.

Registration will begin at 9:00 a.m. and the event will kick-off (rain or shine) at 10:30 a.m. Other special activities associated with the walk include visiting the on-site animal preserve, a live DJ, lunch provided by Applebee’s and other fun activities!

They are walking to raise awareness about the limited options that children born and diagnosed as being medically frail, chronically ill or suffering from any type of life threatening condition(s) have as far as services available to help them when and/or if they leave the hospital. These children have medical

conditions that often require intensive nursing care, and other services that, if are available, are very fragmented and difficult to coordinate.

The daunting task of home care is extremely overwhelming, especially without an agency available to coordinate the services needed to support such child at home.

Until Angela’s House, there were no local specialized homes or facilities available that could care for these children and their unique needs.

The nearest facilities were often out of state, leaving families in a very difficult position – have their child in a setting where they would receive quality care and travel hours to see them, or place them in a non-age appropriate setting and have them close to home.

These voids in the system make a horrifying situation even worse.

Angela’s House, founded in 1992, offers hope for families and children living with severe medical conditions. Their home care programs works with over 600 children that live at home with their parents, by coordinating the home

care services needed to support these children living at home. This may include services such as: medical equipment, nursing support, therapies, medications and making their homes handicapped accessible.

Angela’s House also has three beautiful specialty homes that have the ability to offer children, with often very severe medical needs, the therapeutic, nursing and potential long-term care required. The best part of these homes is the loving environment the children are embraced with. More information about Angela’s House can be found at www.AngelasHouse.org.
