If there’s one thing pirates know how to do it is find treasure. Witness Southside Hospital’s second annual Pirate Fest on August 2nd. A fun family day on Fire Island that brought in those gold doubloons (about $150,000) for the hospital’s new Bohlsen Family Emergency Department.

More than 500 people attended the day’s events, which included treasure hunts, a kids’ carnival, face painting, caricatures, volleyball tournament and a boat decorating contest

Junior firefighters wore full ‘turn-out gear’ and carried heavy equipment up ladders, across terrain, and wielded tools in replicated emergency situations. The hands-on training helps prepare the youngsters as they travel up the ranks to one day serve as volunteer firefighters in their communities.

Founders of the upstate nonprofit, Hudson Valley Honor Flight, are bringing their event to the Big Apple! The firstever Big Apple Honor Flight will take NYC’s Greatest Generation, veterans of World War II, on the “Flight of a Lifetime” next year on their inaugural trip on April 29th, 2017.

Organizers of Big Apple Honor Flight have started the planning process and are looking for volunteers

and veterans to make their mission possible. The group has launched www.

BigAppleHonorFlight. com, which contains additional information on how to get involved in the planning.

Applications to apply to be a veteran honored on the flight can also be found on the website. They plan to take 75 WWII veterans on their first flight from NYC in the spring. These spots will be filled on a first come, first served basis.

“The purpose of today’s announcement is to spread the word to WWII veterans and their family members that Big Apple Honor Flight is here to serve New York City’s heroes of the Greatest Generation,” said Becky Maher, Co-Founder and Chairwoman of Big Apple Honor Flight. “It is our goal to also recruit a few good men and women from the NYC area who have a shared interest in honoring our veterans

the country. Since its inception in 2005, over 159,703 veterans have been flown to D.C. on an Honor Flight. In 2015 alone, Honor Flight hubs serviced 20,886 veterans nationally. Not until now has an official Honor Flight been organized out of New York City, where the population of WWII veterans is estimated to be in the thousands.

“Of all the wars in our nation’s history, it is World War II that threatened the very existence of America as a culturally diverse and free society,” added Maher. “According to the Veterans Administration, an estimated 430 WWII Veterans die each day nationally. We know the time is now to take our WWII veterans from the NYC area, before it is too late.”

With the summer season coming to an end, guests are encouraged to continue to visit Ethel, her new cousin and their elders, Sandy and Sahara, at the Camel Encounter at 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m., daily. Limited tickets are available at the Gift Shop for $6, which includes food and gives each person the opportunity to pet and

hand-feed the animals.

Feeding opportunities are subject to the camels’ appetite and tickets will be available at the front gate and the souvenir stand.

Though camels are thought of as being inherently wild animals, they were domesticated thousands of years ago by perfume traders looking for a method of transportation.

They eventually went on to become the primary source of transport for people throughout Asia and Africa, much like a horse in Europe and the Americas.

For many centuries, they have also been relied on for shade, milk, meat, wool and hides and are still used in many desert locations to pull ploughs, turn waterwheels and transport people and goods along routes inaccessible to motor vehicles.

Camels have a reputation of being ill-tempered,

moody creatures that spit and kick, but they are actually very patient and intelligent. With a max height of more than six feet and weight of over 1,500 pounds, these gentle giants can live to be as old as 40.

Contrary to popular belief, camels do not store water in their humps, which are actually a mound of fatty tissue from which the animal draws energy when food is difficult to find. They do, however, also require little water if their regular diet contains good, moisture-rich plants and can withstand severe dehydration as their unique metabolism enables them to store the water in their bloodstream. They can also drink as much as 21 gallons in 10 minutes at any given opportunity.

New York Blood Center has joined blood donor organizations across 21 countries with the Missing Type campaign to highlight an almost 30% international drop in new blood donors compared to a decade ago. Every second, three people across the world receive a life changing blood transfusion, thanks to selfless donors who answer the call to donate.

You can start donating blood across the U.S. from age sixteen, with a parent’s written consent. O negative blood type, the universal donor that is most reached for in the E.R., is found more commonly within the Latino/Hispanic and African American populations.

However, these populations are underrepresented in the donor pool, and with the increasing population rate, their communities are in need.

“We need people to come out and support one another, by donating blood and your time, you are saving someone’s life, just like mine. Blood is needed for transfusions during organ transplants or when someone is undergoing chemotherapy.

Without blood and people who donated I would not be here today,” said Shields.

Missing Type Campaign

Over two dozen children who were once afraid of the water and lacked basic safety skills are now swimming thanks to free 1-on-1 swim lessons offered by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Long Island (BBBSLI) who teamed up with the Levittown Swim Association (LSA) to provide swim lessons this summer. The swim lessons were part of BBBSLI’s Summer Series which included a variety of free activities for kids and their mentors to participate in together.

“For many of the kids, it was their first time learning to swim, most were fearful, but each one learned basic skills and had 1-on-1 instruction. We can’t fully express our gratitude to the LSA leadership and the volunteer swimmers who were simply incredible,”

said Nancy Travers, Director of Services for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Long Island.

LSA is an all-volunteer, not-for-profit organization swimming program where children develop and learn competitive swimming skills, and then use them to compete against each other in swim meets during the season.

“Levittown Swimming Association is all about kids helping kids. When BBBSLI approached us to give swim lessons to children who didn’t swim, our swimmers could not step up fast enough”, said Carol Wyckoff, LSA President.

Watching the best swimmers in the world compete in the Olympics is a great reminder that until a young person is given the opportunity to

to utilize the many organizations associated with SCOPE and noted that developing the minds of students is an educator’s most important job. “The children we educate today are the leaders of tomorrow,” he said.

Guest speaker New York State Commissioner of Education MaryEllen Elia discussed the changes made and ongoing reviews of the Common Core Learning Standards, state curriculum, student assessments and teacher evaluations. In terms of student assessments, Elia said she believes that “assessments have a role in education and can work as an important tool to educate our children.” She also noted that the state is working to be more transparent by releasing 75 percent of the test questions and providing a parent-

friendly assessment report. In addition, the commissioner addressed teacher evaluations, which she said are now being reviewed by educators. “You want evaluations that can help teachers move forward,” she said.

New York State Regent Roger Tilles presented his views on the demographic and geographic issues resulting in gaps in education and graduation rates. “Districts are asked to overcome issues that are often beyond our schools,” he said.

“During my visits to highneed districts, I have noticed that what brings students to school are the programs we often cut from schools, and I hope we can turn that around.”

Summer Pages Twenty-three students are headed back to school this fall with a unique conversation starter after participating in the 2016 Suffolk County Legislature Page Program.

Now in its second year, this summer’s Page Program drew students from a variety of schools and majors, culminating in a graduation ceremony on August 5th.

Over the course of 11 weeks this summer, Pages got a behind-the-scenes look at the inner workings of local government by working in legislative offices, visiting various county departments and participating in the legislative process.

“These Pages were a bright, enthusiastic bunch who brought a lot of character to the Legislature this summer,” said Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory. “Each of the Pages brought something special to the table, and, just as it is in real politics, they had different ideas and interests but worked together to find common ground and ultimately, success. Suffolk County is lucky to have such innovative young leaders. We wish them well in their future endeavors.”

“I’m very proud of all the hard work the Pages have done this year,” said Minority Leader and 14th District Legislator Kevin McCaffrey. “They are a very smart, hardworking and determined group of young leaders who are going to make great strides wherever they go in this world.”

Pages this year toured various county facilities, including the Medical Examiner’s Office and the Riverhead Correctional Facility. They also saw the legislative process at work when they sat in on meetings of the full legislature and later held meetings of their own to craft and debate mock legislation. The civicminded young people assumed the roles of legislators, elected their peers into leadership roles, and held meetings around the horseshoe, following the same rules of order that real legislators do.

“I am extremely honored to have served as Page Presiding Officer for the Page Program this year,” said Brittany Grimm of Shirley, a rising senior at the University of West Florida. “It has been an excellent learning experience. I am glad to have met all of my fellow Page legislators and worked together with them this summer.”

Island Idol Four Middle Country Central School District (MCCSD) students recently won a music competition, “Island Idol,” sponsored by the Middle Country Public Library.

The event featured performances by 21 talented students from throughout the District.

The contest was judged by Middle Country Central School District alumnus Victor LaBozzetta, who

is currently a student at Rochester University’s Eastman School of Music, and Middle Country Central School District music teachers Dan Martinez and Steve Normandeau.

Newfield High School (NHS) sophomore Kathleen Flaccomio won best solo vocal/dance performance and NHS senior Katelyn Costa finished in second place.

In addition, Dawnwood

NARCAN Training Set Middle School (DMS) seventh grade student Grace Miller won for best musician/band performance and DMS eighth grade student Robert Montano finished in second place.

The event was intended to provide students an opportunity to showcase their musical abilities for a live audience, as they prepare to begin the 20162017 school year.

Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine is pleased to announce the next Free Substance Abuse Awareness and Opioid Overdose Prevention Program Training Class (NARCAN).

Taught by Suffolk County EMS, the training will be offered on Tuesday, October 25th, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the second floor cafeteria at Brookhaven Town Hall.

NARCAN is a medication that can reverse the effects of a drug overdose.

Residents ages 18 and older from all Brookhaven communities are welcome to attend. Those interested in participating must RSVP no later than October 21 by calling the Brookhaven Youth Bureau

at 631.451.8011. Due to the limited number of NARCAN kits available, the number of participants for the training program is restricted to the first 100 people.

Approximately 100 residents attended the first NARCAN Training Program sponsored by Brookhaven Town in June. In response to the turn out and high volume of calls the Youth Bureau received regarding the program, Supervisor Romaine, Councilman Michael Loguercio and the Brookhaven Youth Bureau began making plans to host a second NARCAN Training Program.

In July, Brookhaven Town also sponsored a program geared specifically toward

parents and guardians. A clinical supervisor from the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) discussed a variety of topics at Town Hall; including new trends in substance abuse, signs of drug and alcohol abuse, and what steps to take if abuse is taking place. The clinical supervisor also spent time answering questions from concerned parents and guardians who were in attendance.

Twenty-one talented performers from Middle Country Central School District entertained more than 350 attendees with singing, dancing, and music.

Play for Peace a Success

Over the weekend, the 8th annual “Play for Peace” Tournament was held at the Patchogue-Medford Youth Soccer League’s fields on Sipp Avenue.

More than 500 players, spectators, coaches and volunteers came together on a day of record-breaking temperatures.

“This was our best year yet,” stated Deputy Presiding Officer Rob Calarco. “This year we’ve had more teams, more sponsors, more spectators and more donors to our dinner than ever. The best part is that the funds raised for the tournament will go to a very worthy cause.”

Deputy Presiding Officer Calarco first organized the tournament in 2009 in response to the murder of Ecuadorian immigrant Marcelo Lucero, while he was an aide to Legislator

Jack Eddington. Since then it has grown to include women’s teams and a children’s soccer clinic hosted by the New York Cosmos. In 2013, the tournament first included a “champion’s dinner,” donated by local restaurants and where the players all have a chance to sit together and eat when the games are finished.

“This tournament has become one of the signature events of the summer for the soccerplaying community,” stated Deputy Presiding Officer Calarco. “This could not be done without the partnership of the Patchogue-Medford Youth Soccer League and a host committee of dedicated volunteers who work all year to make this event as success.” Volunteers from Church of the Nazarene,

St. Francis de Sales and Suffolk Federal Credit Union spent the day tending to the players and serving dinner after the games.

This year’s funds will be donated to Long Island Head Start’s scholarship program.

Corporate sponsors of the event include HealthFirst, Gershow Recycling, Suffolk County Police Benevolent Association, TriTec Real Estate, Brookhaven Memorial Hospital, Suffolk Transportation Service and Bridgehampton National Bank. Coca-Cola donated 40 cases of Dasani Water and Powerade to keep the players hydrated. More than 30 local businesses and restaurants sponsored individual teams or donated food to the dinner.

GUEST SPEAKER - Legislator Tom Muratore was once again invited to be the guest speaker at the Westfield Seniors Club, which meets each Wednesday at the Selden Fire Department. At the meeting, Legislator Muratore handed out helpful resources explaining the available county resources and services, followed up with a question and answer period.

MULTICULTURAL FESTIVAL - On August 13th, Councilman Kevin LaValle attended the 5th annual Farmingville Multicultural Festival held at Triangle Park. The event featured foods of many nations, cultural singers and dancers, Japanese drums, guitar music and puppeteers for children of all ages. The event was sponsored by the Farmingville Residents Association, One More for Jesus Church and Helping Hands Ministry.

The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) received a $2,500 grant from PSEG for the Student Assistance Program (SAP).

Funding will help to support the ongoing operation of LICADD’s SAP designed to educate young people about the potential health consequences associated

with substance abuse in an age appropriate manner.

The TGFD prevention program helps children build core social competencies, refusal skills and protective factors relating to tobacco and other drug use during their critical formative educational years. Teen Intervene, a psychoeducation intervention model, addresses teens

Certainly, we all come from different circumstances, are faced with varying situations in our everyday lives – but, at our core, we are all made up of the same basic components.

How we choose to deal with life’s variables is what makes us each unique. Do we meet them head on, or do we shy away? Is our tendency to be confrontational, or passive?

Are we cynical or receptive to new ideas and methodologies?

Personally, I would brand myself a mixture of these facets, somewhat cynical, but yet still idealistic enough to remain hopeful that things will get better, over time, somehow.

A positive mentality goes a long way, that is undeniable; and being open to possibilities will always seem like the better approach to putting up walls and allowing yourself to become consumed by the negativity surrounding you.

Of course, sometimes we need a little help to implement these ideologies, and for that, I have sought out the practice of yoga over the last several years. Initially intended as a way to fill the void left by my “retirement” from 20 years of dancing, it has served as far more of a peaceful retreat from the world, an avenue to truly relax and decompress. Sure, it has its physical benefits as well, but the mental state it helps you to achieve is truly priceless.

The key, naturally, is to take this practice and apply it to those many hours spent outside the yoga studio, to transfer it into the “real” world beyond the self-made sanctuary. This can be found anywhere really, from a few hours soaking in the rays of the sun poolside, to walking along the shoreline with the ocean’s waves caressing your toes, to sitting on the edge of a dock taking in the last golden glow of sunset.

You need only to remain open-minded, to see the beauty of each day, and to channel that positivity into a productive mentality. Easier said than done? Sure. But it can be done. It has been, by those who have chosen to cast aside the negative. My goal in this, my 34th year, is to embody the same characteristics those I admire do. And why not.
