CUTTING CEREMONY
Meet Guy. He’s a local business owner, former rock bassist, and current fan of LEDs. It didn’t hurt that he got $5,900 in rebates to replace his store’s old lighting with energy-efficient fixtures.* He says his store and his guitars look great in the new LED glow. And, with the monthly energy cost savings, he couldn’t be happier. How can we help your small business save?

SHED THE MEDS EVENT - NYS Senator Dean Murray is proud to announce that his recently held, “Shed the Meds” event, was a big success. Senator Murray held the event at the Sachem Public Library, in coordination with the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office. The free event allowed the public to, safely and properly, dispose of unused and/or expired prescription drugs and over the counter medications. Disposing of the medications in this manner protects our communities by preventing the drugs from getting into the wrong hands and protects the environment by preventing people from throwing the medication in the garbage or flushing them down the toilet. This event resulted in the collection of six large boxes of medications. Thank you to the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office, Sachem Public Library officials and to those individuals who safely and smartly disposed of their medications. Senator Murray’s next “Shed the Meds” event will be held on Friday, August 25, 2023, from 11:00am to 1:00pm at the Middle Country Library, 575 Middle Country Road, Selden, NY 11784. The Best Advice For Home Buyers Today
By JoAnn Cilla
Last month I met with several first-time home buyers who were frustrated with the state of the residential home market on Long Island. A few of them tried, and failed, to buy a home; others simply didn’t know where to start. The common thread with all the buyers was unpreparedness; none of them were able to make an immediate move if they found the right house. I gave them some advice which prompted my August article: 12 tips for home buyers today.
1) Determine your budget: Before you start searching for a home, establish a budget that considers your income, expenses, and savings. This will help you understand how much you can afford to spend on a property.
2) Get pre-approved for a mortgage: Obtaining a mortgage pre-approval from a lender will give you
any documents, review all contracts and paperwork associated with the purchase. It is best to seek legal advice to ensure you understand the terms and conditions.
10) Don’t overlook additional costs: Be prepared for closing costs, property taxes, homeowners insurance, and maintenance expenses to avoid any surprises.
11) Trust your instincts: While it’s important to consider the practical aspects of buying a home, also trust your instincts and emotions. If a property feels right and meets most of your requirements, it may be the right choice for you.
12) Take your time: Buying a home is a major decision. Carefully consider each step of the process and make informed choices that align with your longterm goals. Remember, these tips are general guidelines, and it’s always recommended to consult with professionals, such as real estate agents and financial advisors, for personalized advice based on your specific situation. Happy house hunting!
JOANN CILLA
a clear idea of how much you can borrow. This will make your home search more focused and help you negotiate with sellers.
3) Research the market: Look at recent sales data, property prices, and trends to understand the market conditions and make informed decisions.
4) Make a list of priorities: Create a list of features and amenities that are essential for your new home. This will help you narrow down your search and focus on properties that meet your needs.
5) Work with a reputable real estate agent: Find a reliable and experienced real estate agent who can guide you through the home buying process. They will have access to the latest listings, negotiate on your behalf, and provide valuable advice.
6) Visit multiple properties: Don’t rush into buying the first property you see. Visit multiple homes to get a better sense of what’s available in your price range. Take notes and compare each property against your list of priorities.
7) Consider the location: Look for factors like proximity to schools, shopping centers, transportation, and other amenities that are important to you.
8) Get a professional inspection: Hire a professional home inspector to assess its condition. This will help you uncover any potential issues or repairs needed before finalizing the purchase.
9) Review the paperwork carefully: Before signing

Come Support Neighbors Facing Food Insecurity!
Food Collection Drive Friday, Sept. 1 At Stop & Shop, 3126 Jericho Turnpike, East Northport
On Friday, Sept. 1, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., PSEG Long Island’s Power to Feed Long Island summer food collection drive comes to East Northport.
Food collection bins and a drive-through option will be set up at the Stop & Shop supermarket at 3126 Jericho Turnpike, East Northport, where members of the public can donate nonperishable items and household essentials for neighbors facing food insecurity.
With your help and the generous donations of fellow Long Islanders, the initiative aims to collect the equivalent of 50,000 meals during July, August and September. Last year, thanks to your kindness, the equivalent of more than 42,000 meals was collected for the Power to Feed Long Island initiative. Hundreds of thousands of Long Island families struggle with hunger and food insecurity throughout the year. During the summer months, there is a significant reduction in food donations to local food banks, pantries and programs. Compounding the issue, children are not in school where they can

receive free and reducedcost breakfast and lunch. In addition, the pandemic and the increased inflation rate have further strained local food pantries and emergency feeding programs served by Island Harvest.
Please consider donating some of the healthy foods you feed your own family, pet food or personal care items, including:
Nonperishable food (no glass jars, please): Healthy varieties of canned foods, such as lowsodium beans, vegetables, soups, pasta sauces and tomato varieties, tuna and chicken, along with rice, pasta, popcorn kernels, nut butters, olive and canola oil, spices and pet food.
Household essentials: Toilet paper, paper towels, hand sanitizer, laundry detergent and dish soap.
Personal care items: Toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, soap, shampoo, conditioner, feminine care products and shaving products, antibacterial wipes and washcloths.
Baby care items: Diapers, wipes, formula, creams, ointments and baby wash.
If you cannot participate on this day, please consider
making a donation online at www.psegliny.com/feedli
– Island Harvest estimates every dollar is the equivalent of two meals.
The schedule of Power to Feed collection drives is as follows:

– 3 p.m. Stop & Shop
- 3126 Jericho Turnpike, East Northport
· Sept. 15 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. Stop & Shop - 575 West Montauk Highway, West Babylon Onsite, information will be available from PSEG Long Island on electric service payment plans and programs and ways to save money through energy efficiency options. “Most of us love to be outside when the weather is warm and the days are long, and many of us utilize electricity to transform our outdoor spaces for the season,” said Michael Sullivan, PSEG Long Island’s vice president of Transmission and Distribution.
“Whether you are using electric lawn equipment, hooking up a sound system for a garden party, or even inflating a bounce house or kids’ swimming pool, it’s important to follow best practices to ensure everyone stays safe.”
· Check that extension cords are correctly rated for the amount of electricity they are to carry and are Underwriter Laboratory (UL) approved.
· Check all electric cords for visible damage. Cracked or frayed cords can be dangerous.
Never use power equipment on wet hedges, grass, shrubs, or in any areas that are damp.
Make sure their work and garden power tools are protected with threepronged grounding plugs, unless they are double insulated.
Contact their town or village hall to confirm that their pool plans meet
Check that no electric devices are so close to the swimming pool that they could accidentally fall into the water.
Ensure that all outdoor outlets have waterproof covers. Outlets that have moisture in them may create a shock hazard.
Keep all ladders far away from electric lines.
To help customers make the most of their summer without breaking the bank, PSEG Long Island offers rebates on smart thermostats, heat pump pool heaters and more. To learn more, visit https://www.psegliny.com/ saveenergyandmoney/ energystarrebates.

Catholic Health Opens Ambulatory & Urgent Care at Centereach
Catholic Health has announced the opening of Catholic Health Ambulatory & Urgent Care at Centereach, bringing exceptional outpatient care services to the middle of Suffolk County. Located at 2112 Middle Country Road in Centereach, the newly constructed 63,000 square foot multispecialty care center will feature a number of primary and specialty care services, as well as a walk-in urgent care for patients with more immediate care needs.
The new center is part of Catholic Health’s growing network of multispecialty care centers, complete with diagnostic imaging, an on-site pharmacy, and a dedicated suite where Catholic Health’s gastroenterologists can perform endoscopy procedures in a safe, comfortable and convenient environment outside the hospital setting.
“Today marks an
important day not only for Catholic Health but also for the residents in and near Centereach, who now have access to exceptional primary care, urgent care, and specialized care across a wide variety of medical specialties,” said Catholic Health President & CEO Patrick O’Shaughnessy, DO, MBA. “We’ve launched a number of Ambulatory Care sites across Long Island, however, today we open our largest and most expansive. This state-ofthe-art facility reflects our continuing commitment to placing more health care services outside of the hospital setting, serving our communities with highly accessible, communitybased sites where patients can get the care they need, when they need it, as conveniently as possible.”
The new facility is part of a $17 million development project that further strengthens
Catholic Health’s goal of making quality health care more convenient for Long Islanders and to support many of the unmet health care needs of the community. Designed and constructed from the ground up, 43,000 square-feet of space will immediately be used for primary and specialty care services, eventually building out an additional 20,000 square-feet for future health care services.
In addition to the center in Centereach, and consistent with their expansion plans in Suffolk County, Catholic Health plans to launch another ambulatory care site further east in Riverhead in the months ahead.
“We are delighted to celebrate this incredible transformation of a former retail site into a state-ofthe-art multispecialty ambulatory and urgent care center for Catholic Health,” said Joseph Simone, President of Simone
Development Companies. “It was a true collaboration between our teams to be able to deliver this firstrate facility in just one year from start of construction. Numerous planning approvals were required and we thank the Town of Brookhaven and Suffolk County for their support and
cooperation throughout the process.”
Additionally, Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine said, “I am happy to welcome Catholic Health Ambulatory & Urgent Care to the new Centereach location. As their largest facility, they can offer a wide variety of health services to
the residents of Brookhaven Town. This is a great example of how redevelopment of a former retail property is a much better alternative to new development and it makes healthcare more easily accessible for our residents while creating jobs for local healthcare workers.”
