Eco-conscious lifestyles may have transformed the ways people behave at home or on the job, but many schools have taken a little longer to embrace eco-friendly practices.

But that doesn’t have to continue, as younger generations of students are growing up green and ready to embrace some green strategies in the

classroom.

One of the easiest steps to take is to reduce paper usage. According to Edutopia, a K-12 learning and education resource, the average school uses approximately 250,000 pieces of paper per school year. This estimate is based on an average of 50 reams of paper per teacher at a 100-teacher school.

Instead of relying so heavily on paper, students can take notes on laptops or tablets while teachers can rely on smartboards and notebooks for classroom lessons. When paper must be used, make a concentrated effort to discard it in designated recycling bins in each classroom.

Chapter 35 Today, I turn 35, making that dreaded leap into the next age bracket. So long 1834. It’s been fun.

Though age is but a number, it does tend to carry added significance the higher those digits climb. Each year brings with it a sort of reevaluation of life. Where am I at? Where do I want to be?

And, most importantly, how to traverse that at-times tricky road between points A & B. Uneven as it might seem, I do believe we all have a path we are destined to travel. How we choose to navigate it remains somewhat open-ended.

I’ve always felt my generation existed on the cusp of two worlds. A child of the 90’s, my teen years were spent listening to the sounds of *NSync and Britney Spears and watching T.G.I.F. on ABC

Friday nights. The entire grunge movement passed me by, as did many of the cult classic movies of the time.

Twenty years later, I have found a new appreciation for all that came before.

Pop culture aside, I feel my particular age group remains the last of the “old school.”

We were brought up in an age where technology was limited to televisions and radios, Walkmen and cassette tapes. No one had a cell phone until I was well into college, perhaps a beeper if they were lucky. If you wanted to reach a friend, you called their home and most likely were greeted by their parents, who knew you by name. A night out consisted of being dropped off at the local mall or movie theater, then picked up by those same parents and taken

The hope, in the end, is that we will never completely let go of those things which shaped us during our most formative years, the core values we were raised with. No matter how life may change, no matter how many age brackets we pass through, we must remain true to ourselves.

Here’s to 35. Here’s to the next chapter, a fresh page in the old book.

Thousands of Long Islanders are expected to join the American Heart Association’s Long Island Heart Walk on Sunday, September 17th to raise funds to fight heart disease and stroke, America’s No. 1 and No. 5 causes of death.

The Longwood Board of Education has unanimously approved the appointment of Stephanie Columbia as the Director of Mental Health Services and Student Attendance, effective July 6th, 2017.

Ms. Columbia began her career at Longwood in 2001, where she served as a school social worker at Ridge Elementary School.

In that capacity, she initiated parent support and parenting skills programs, coordinated community outreach, and

implemented social skills training for students.

In 2014, she co-authored the School Climate Transformation Grant from the New York State Department of Education and Safe and Healthy Schools.

Longwood was awarded the $1.7 million grant to implement Positive Behavior Intervention Strategies (PBIS) for students K-12 and The Leader in Me for students K-4.

To facilitate the implementation of the grant,

Ms. Columbia provided Districtwide professional development to staff, initiated school building internal PBIS teams, served as district level coordinator and implemented the building level PBIS coaching program.

In 2015 and 2016, she presented at both the Northeast and National PBIS Conference on the positive impact of the grant’s implementation. In October 2017, she will present at the New York State Association for Behavior Analysis Conference.

Ms. Columbia earned her Bachelor’s Degree from Purchase College in Psychology, a Master’s Degree in Social Work from Fordham University, and received her BCBA in Applied Behavior Analysis from Florida Institute of Technology. She earned her administrative certifications from Dowling College and is currently pursuing her doctoral degree in Educational Administration and Supervision from St. John’s University.

“I am truly honored and excited to be working in this new capacity where I can continue to support student social and emotional wellbeing,” said Ms. Columbia.

Fourth-grade students from Grundy Avenue Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District worked together to set up a new addition to their school, the Little Free Library; an initiative that brings books to students and fosters a love for learning within the community.

Little Free Library is a nonprofit organization that inspires a love for reading by bringing book shares to communities around the world. Through the efforts of Little Free Library, millions of books

are exchanged each year, greatly increasing their availability to students of all ages. Grundy Avenue Principal Laura Amato, a former reading teacher, supervised the project.

Students took time away from their summer vacations to lend a hand painting the library, book cart and the post that the library will stand on. Ms. Amato created labels for each book that students inserted to give them a sense of ownership, purpose and pride as they oversee their free library throughout the year.

Women Empowering Women

“Literacy is very important to me as it is the foundation to all learning,” said Ms. Amato. “I feel an obligation to put books in the hands of kids any way we can and get them to read both in school and out of school.”

The library will be installed in front of the school in the coming weeks for all students to enjoy.

If one wishes to donate, books in new or good condition may be dropped off at Grundy Avenue Elementary School.

Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine has announced the Division of Women’s Services tenth annual Conference and Expo will take place on Saturday, October 14th from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. This year’s conference, entitled “Women Empowering Women – Inspire, Educate and Motivate,” will feature guest speakers, vendor booths and workshops that promote wellness and personal growth in the lives of women in the community.

Smoking Cessation Program

On July 15th, seven hundred seventy-two Islandia Village residents came out to the twelfth Annual Bar-B-Que. This year’s theme was “The Wild Wild West” as children in attendance received a free T-shirt to commemorate the event and a cowboy hat.

More than 50 volunteers - comprised of Village volunteers, local Boy Scouts and employees of

Jake’s 58 - helped out at the event. Some of them served residents hamburgers, hot dogs, corn, salad, ice cream, soda and water, while others operating the carnival games at the event gave the children a chance to win some prizes.

Children enjoyed the day with a water slide, hayrides, games, races, pony rides, a petting zoo, face painting, piñatas, train rides, a limbo contest and a dunk tank.

Musicians and a local DJ provided the music to keep the party going.

In addition, Mayor Allan M. Dorman hosted a blueberry pie eating contest with the winners each getting a blueberry pie. The Bar-B-Que also featured raffles, in which two lucky children each won a bicycle, courtesy of Bolla Market.

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today announced the Scott Martella Back-to-School Drive in partnership with the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless to provide supplies for underprivileged students before the start of the school year. The donation drive will be held in memory of Scott Martella, the former Communications Director for County Executive Bellone who was tragically killed last year in a car accident on the Long Island Expressway.

“Scott was a one of a kind public servant who deeply cared about giving back to those less fortunate in the community,” said Suffolk County Executive Bellone. “As a former Smithtown School Board member, Scott had a passion for giving students the tools they needed to be successful. This event will help thousands of Long Island children while honoring Scott’s legacy and commitment he had to serving others.”

Scott, who was 29 at the time of his passing, was widely considered a rising star in New York State government and public service.

He impacted thousands of lives across Long Island and the

state through his work in public service. Before the age of 30, Scott had already begun to assemble a list of accomplishments that included being the youngest person to be elected to the Smithtown Board of Education.

Earlier this year, Governor Cuomo established the Scott Martella Public Service Fellowship that is awarded every two years to a student, who like Scott, is committed to public service and has a passion for helping others. The Fellow will serve for two years at the Department of Labor, where Scott had served for over a year, and will focus on community outreach, similar to the work that he championed throughout his career.

Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory said: “Scott Martella was a truly special person with a passion for giving back. The mark he left on Suffolk County will not soon be forgotten. I want to applaud County Executive Bellone and LICH for continuing the legacy Scott began. Far too many Long Island families struggle with poverty, and programs like this school supply drive help ensure that every child starts their

school year off on the right foot-with all the tools they need to succeed.”

Suffolk County Legislator Steve Stern said: “Our entire community plays an important role in collecting school supplies because all of our children need to start off the school year right. Scott Martella was an outstanding public servant who exemplified an active community coming together for an important cause.

This effort of donating much needed supplies is not only critical for so many children throughout Suffolk County but also continues Scott’s legacy.”

The goal for this years drive is to prepare 5,000 backpacks filled with school supplies for children who are homeless or at-risk on Long Island.

Last year’s event was a huge success having collected and assembled nearly 3,500 backpacks making a difference for Long Island’s homeless youth population.

Back to School Drive Announced

Science degree in earth science from C.W. Post of Long Island University and an Advanced Certificate in school building leadership from College of Saint Rose.

Mr. Holl most recently worked as a physics teacher for the Sachem High School North, teaching both Regents and Advanced Placement courses, and serving as a mentor for two first-year physics teachers. Additionally, he worked collaboratively with colleagues to develop and enhance the physics curriculum. Since 2010, Mr. Holl has coached the Sachem High School North boys cross-country team to many impressive finishes. The 2014 Suffolk County Coach of the Year award winner led the team to a Suffolk County Class A Championship victory, a Division 1 Championship and two League 2 Championships.

Mr. Holl holds a Bachelor of Arts in physics and a Master of Arts degree in liberal studies from Stony Brook University. He also attended the Educational Leadership program at Stony Brook University.

Dr. Almendarez-DeBello

comes to the district from the Uniondale Union Free School District at the Lawrence Road Middle School as an administrative intern and a bilingual mathematics teacher. Within these roles, she aided in creating measures to facilitate testing procedures for administration, proctor schedules and student accommodations as well as developed and provided various professional development workshops for teachers. Prior to this, Dr. Almendarez-DeBello taught mathematics for eight years at Intermediate School 93 for the New York City Department of Education. She received her Bachelor of Arts and Science degree in psychology from the State University of New York at Albany, her Master of Science in education from St. John’s University, where she also completed an Advanced Certificate in school building leadership and her doctorate of education degree in educational administration and supervision.

Mr. Kolar joins North High School after serving

as the acting building principal of Sleepy Hollow Middle School in Tarrytown, New York since 2015. For the past 18 years, Mr. Kolar has taught social studies to students grades 6-12 and acted as a seventh- and eighthgrade team leader, where he oversaw a five-teacher team, was a mentor to new staff members and was responsible for the design and implementation of lesson plans and curricula.

Going Above and Beyond Teachers provide many things to their students. In addition to an education, support and guidance, many teachers also feel compelled to enhance their classrooms with supplies they’ve purchased out-ofpocket.

After an expansive search, the Sachem Central School District is proud to welcome Carissa Hagan, William Holl, Brenda Almendarez-DeBello and Brian Kolar as the new assistant principals at Samoset Middle School, Seneca Middle School, Sachem High School East and Sachem High School North, respectively.

Ms. Hagan comes to Samoset Middle School from Sagamore Middle School, where she has worked as an English as a Second Language teacher since 2010. During her time at Sagamore, Ms. Hagan worked with students to increase comprehension and understanding of content areas and spearheaded other initiatives such as Sachem’s districtwide ESL community night.

Additionally, she worked as an adult education teacher and has served as the Middle School Director of the Sachem Summer Enrichment Program since 2014. Ms. Hagan holds a Bachelor of Arts in Linguistics TESOL K-12 from Stony Brook University, a Master of
