ORANGETHEORY FITNESS COMES TO FARMINGDALE If you have heard anything about Orangetheory Fitness (OTF) you’ve probably heard that is is “more than a regular workout”. Orangetheory is a sciencebacked, technology-tracked, coach-inspired group workout, which is designed to produce results from the inside out. Perhaps you’ve tried a gym or fitness routine in the past that just felt like a dead-end - no guidance, no inspiration and no results. OTF wants you to know that it’s not you, it’s your work out and that you can still achieve your goals to become a fitter, stronger, better version of yourself.

special guidance there is no reason to worry, just tell your coach. They have options for every exercise. One of the most unique parts of OTF is that all members can track their results. Members get hooked up to a heart rate monitor upon arrival to a class and its technology not only measures your heart rate,

Nick Galanis is a Long Island Area Developer for Orangetheory Fitness. This new Farmingdale studio, located at 253 Airport Plaza Blvd in Farmingdale, is the 10th OTF studio that he operates. Nick found his lifelong passion for health and fitness when he enlisted in the Marines and working out became his daily escape.

The following various membership opportunities are available: Basic Membership, which allows you to sign up for 4 classes/month; Elite Membership, which allows you to sign up for 8 classes/month and Premier Membership, which allows you to sign up for an unlimited amount of classes each month. Membership benefits include a month-to-month contract, online or mobile booking, flexible class times (open every day of the week), access to 1,000+ studios, freeze privileges and no long term contracts. Orangetheory Fitness of Farmingdale is offering one free trial class to all those who are interested. For more information, please call the studio at 631.386.8088. If you are interested in visiting another Long Island studio, they have studios located in Rockville Centre, Hewlett, Merrick, Garden City Park, Carle Place, Bethpage, Massapequa Park, Port Washington, Syosset, East Meadow, Melville, East Northport, Stony Brook, Sayville and Patchogue. You can also visit www.orangetheoryfitness.com/service/directorylisting to view a full list of all their studio locations around the nation. Plus, keep an eye out for upcoming studios in Smithtown, Port Jefferson, Seaford, Greenvale, West Babylon and Bayshore.

At Orangetheory Fitness all of the classes offered are an hour long and are in a group setting. No two classes are alike and members don’t know which kind of class they will be walking into before they arrive. Their coaches are skilled and work with each member of the group to keep them motivated, positive and in the correct form for the workout they are doing. Their classes are designed for people of all fitness levels and members can work out at their own pace. If you are recovering from an injury or orthopedic issue and need

From old-school clammers to new-age coders. We’ve served this richly diverse region as a community hospital for more than 60 years. And as the area has grown, so have we. But as Long Island doctors, nurses, and healthcare professionals, we’ve never outgrown our devotion to the health of the community we all call home. That commitment can be seen in our quality improvements, our Knapp Cardiac Care Center, a new surgical pavilion, our American College of Surgeons accredited trauma center and our nationally recognized stroke program, where we get you the right care within minutes of arrival. So while we’ve updated our brand to represent our growth, there is one thing that will never change: Our commitment to make you feel as comfortable in our home as you do in your own.

The Pedestrian Education Video Scholarship Competition is offered by the New York State Coalition for Transportation Safety. The competition is part of the Walk Safe Long Island campaign organized by the Long Island Health Collaborative in partnership with the Coalition and health and safety educators from across Nassau and Suffolk Counties. Some Long Island communities have a particularly poor driving record and are among the worst in the state. When New York State communities were ranked by the number of pedestrian crashes that occurred between 2009 and 2013, Long Island communities accounted for eight of the top twenty communities ranked, and Hempstead had the highest number of crashes of all communities in upstate

New York and Long Island. Other ranked communities included Brookhaven (number 7), Islip (number 8), Oyster Bay (number 9), N. Hempstead (number 10), Babylon (number 11), Huntington (number 14), and Freeport (number 19). For this scholarship

contest, students simply need to create a short video that illustrates one or more of the Vehicle and Traffic Laws for Pedestrian Enforcement. The intent of the competition is to encourage more widespread understanding about various pedestrian/

traffic safety laws. For more information about the contest rules, pedestrian and vehicle laws, and how to submit a video go to https://www.walksafeli. org/video. The deadline is August 31, 2019.

Longwood Central School District is proud to announce that the music program at the high school has been named a recipient of the third annual High School Music Department Recognition Program, sponsored by the Long Island Music Hall of Fame (LIMHoF). The high school is one of only six programs chosen based on music education excellence, as well as creating notable music experiences for students in creative and meaningful ways. “We are proud that the Long Island Music Hall of Fame has chosen to

recognize the high school’s music program,” said Dr. John J. Gallagher, director of fine arts. “Because our district-wide music program culminates at the high school level, this recognition shows that we offer quality and sequential curriculum starting at the elementary level. It also shows that our students are learning at appropriate levels and that they can perform music of different genres at various levels of difficulty. Our students consistently earn high ratings at NYSSMA solo and major organization adjudication festivals, and

are selected for All-County and All-State recognition each year.” The Longwood music program “is part of an elite group who offer students unique, rewarding, and rich musical experiences,” according to the official award letter. “Part of our mission at LIMHoF is to support music education for future generations, and that can’t happen without the commitment of high schools like the ones we are honoring today,” explained Ernie Canadeo, Chairman of the LIMHoF.

C-Quest Showcase

In celebration of all of the wonderful initiatives they took part in this school year, students enrolled in the district’s C-Quest program recently invited their family members to Edward J. Bosti Elementary School for the school’s annual C-Quest Showcase event. With assistance from advisers Lisa Manzo and Kevin Keane, the students were joined by their proud family members as they displayed all of the hard

work they put into their projects while attending C-Quest. The students’ work was on full display for their guests, showcasing their in-depth research topics which highlighted the anatomy and lifestyle of the frog, and the history of motor vehicles and what they can be expected to look like in the near future. Lining both the classroom walls and surrounding hallway area were student-projects from

the school year, including their fun and creative biographies, along with an art project in which they beautifully created paintings of panda bears. The district’s C-Quest program is dedicated to enhancing the educational experience of fourth and fifth grade students. Based at Edward J. Bosti Elementary School, C-Quest services the needs of more than 100 students throughout the district.

The Charity of the Month for August is: The Social Brain www.facebook.com/socialbrainny

The Social Brain is a brand new 501(c)(3) non profit in the state of New York. They are on the brink of breaking through as one of the most unique and helpful organizations that serves those suffering from a brain injury. Their mission is to provide brain injury survivors the opportunity to build friendships through socialization and reduced isolation. This organization began in January 2019 when a group of individuals, families and professionals joined together to brainstorm ideas of how they can help brain injury survivors socialize and partake in various hobbies together. Many survivors spend much of their lives in and out of rehab and home feeling isolated, but The Social Brain formed to change that. After hosting various events for survivors such as a day at Sweetbriar Nature Center, a Bowling Event, a Library Day and an afternoon at Four Star Ranch, it was obvious that they were reaching a population in need. Just last month, The Social Brain was granted 501(c)(3) status in the state of New York and they have just started working out of a community center located at 202 Middle Country Road in Middle Island. The Social Brain operates solely on volunteers and their outreach comes not only from word of mouth, but from help through their recent partnerships with local hospitals, school districts, neurology departments, Peconic Speech Services in Riverhead and St. Joseph’s College. Survivors from all over Long Island are welcome to get involved with The Social Brain. On average, each event they host has about 30-40 participates and there is no age restrictions.

Recently a 4-week session hosted by The Social Brain and Peconic Speech Services in Riverhead started to help survivors learn social skills, build friendships, find cues from others and interact with peers. The first session was on August 6th and the following 2 sessions will be on August 20th and 27th. Age groups are broken down from ages 5-7, 8-12, teens and adults. If you are still interested in attending any of these events, please email thesocialbrainny@ gmail.com or call 631.793.4311 for more information. Additionally, in only two days (on August 16th), The Social Brain will host a “Basket Night Fundraiser” at the Sound Beach Property Owners Association at 6:30PM! This will be fun night with 250 plus baskets and prizes being raffled off; top raffles include brand new bicycles from Walmart and an overnight stay at Gurney’s in Montauk. All are welcome to attend! If you bring school supplies to be donated, you will receive a single raffle ticket for each item you donate. If you or someone you know is interested in learning more about or becoming involved with this organization, please contact them today.

If you would like your organization to be featured in this column, e-mail Noelle@SouthBaysNeighbor.com!

August 17th starting at 9:00am. All funds raised will be donated to Bethel Hobbs, a local volunteer community farm that provides fresh, wholesome produce to those in need. Last year, over 200 participants ran the four mile challenge. “Let’s hope we get even more

participants this year,” stated Legislator Muratore. “This is a great family event that raises money for a worthy cause.” To participate, contact the office of Legislator Tom Muratore at 631-854-9292, or email tom.muratore@ suffolkcountyny.gov.

Hiawatha Students Explore Colonial Times A series of lessons on the colonial times that took place last school year sent fourth grade students at Hiawatha Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District back in time as they participated in several activities that recreated aspects of that important time in American history. Through their explora-

tion of colonial times, students researched everyday life, games, transportation, food, clothing and commerce. As part of the engaging activities, students practiced penmanship with quill pens and ink, performed math on slate boards and reinforced their spelling and geography skills during a bee.

During an event that culminated their expansive study, students dressed up in attire that was popular during that time period. In addition, family and friends were invited for an outdoor picnic where they made checkerboards, spinning tops and played colonial games.

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today invited residents who use tobacco and are seeking assistance in breaking their addiction to sign up for free smoking cessation classes. The Learn to Be…Tobacco Free program offers assistance with planning, support, counseling and provides over-the counter medications to participants who are medically eligible. “Breaking an addiction to tobacco is never easy but with the right support network it can literally save one’s life,” said Suffolk County Executive Bellone. “Since the inception of this program, thousands of smokers have participated in the program and increased their chances of succeeding in this task. I encourage anyone who is struggling to quit, to sign up for these informative classes and get healthier.” Dr. James Tomarken, Commissioner of Suffolk County Department of Health Services, said: “We know more than ever about what works and what doesn’t when it comes to tobacco cessation. Studies have shown that tobacco users who try to break their addiction with behavioral support are more likely to be successful than those who try to do so without support.” The Office of Health Education staff has been facilitating tobacco cessation services through the Learn to Be …Tobacco Free program for 18 years, serving more than 19,000 residents. Students Learn Dangers of Drinking and Driving

STUDENTS LEARN DANGERS OF DRINKING AND DRIVING - Deputy Sheriff Tom Indence spoke with students about how a single wrong decision can affect their lives as well as the lives of others. Students then drove through an obstacle course in a Drunk Buster Buggy, (a pedal-powered go-kart) while wearing impairment goggles, simulating the altered depth perception of intoxication. Pictured: Longwood High School sophomore McKenna Fenimore maneuvers through an obstacle course while pedaling the Drunk Buster Buggy cart. Thanks to an interactive experience provided by the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office, twenty driver education students at Longwood High School have a better understanding of the dangers of drinking and driving. On Monday, July 22, Deputy Sheriff Tom Indence spoke with students about how a single wrong decision can affect their lives as well as the lives of others. Students then drove through an obstacle course in a Drunk Buster Buggy, (a pedal-powered go-kart)

while wearing impairment goggles, simulating the altered depth perception of intoxication. Each orange cone represented a person, and each time the student hit a cone, they were responsible for taking a life. After the simulated driving portion, students wore the goggles to walk through the maze with a partner, trying to avoid the cones and get home safely. Students quickly realized that with their senses impaired, they could not see anyone coming from behind them, or could tell

where a sidewalk ended, and the street began. “Safety behind the wheel is of the utmost importance,” said Dr. John J. Gallagher, coordinator of Longwood’s Driver Education program. “Drivers are easily distracted due to texting or talking on the phone. Adding these dangers to driving while impaired increases the need for this type of training. We are grateful to the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office for providing this initiative for our students.”
