Mock Interview Day

As part of the curriculum unit on the American Revolution, Tamarac fourth graders began their expansive history project by researching important figures such as Benjamin Franklin, Molly Pitcher, Paul Revere, Deborah Sampson and George

Washington. To accompany their research, the creative students constructed bottle figures that replicated the figures they selected for their project. With help from technology integration specialist Claudia Camassa, students then utilized Scratch

coding software and Makey Makey kits to animate their bottle characters with recordings of their voice to tell the story of their involvement in the American Revolution. At the culminating event for the project, students displayed their unique projects and bottle figures for an audience of family and friends to observe and experience the interactive presentation.

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today invited residents who use tobacco and are seeking assistance in breaking their addiction to sign up for free smoking cessation classes. The Learn to Be…Tobacco Free program offers assistance with planning, support, counseling and provides over-the counter medications to participants who are medically eligible. “Breaking an addiction to tobacco is never easy but with the right support network it can literally save one’s life,” said Suffolk County Executive Bellone. “Since the inception of this program, thousands of smokers have participated in the program and increased their chances of succeeding in this task. I encourage anyone who is struggling to quit, to sign up for these informative classes and get healthier.” Dr. James Tomarken, Commissioner of Suffolk County Department of Health Services, said: “We know more than ever about what works and what doesn’t when it comes to tobacco cessation. Studies have shown that tobacco users who try to break their addiction with behavioral support are more likely to be successful than those who try to do so without support.” The Office of Health Education staff has been facilitating tobacco cessation services through the Learn to Be …Tobacco Free program for 18 years, serving more than 19,000 residents. The program is a seven-week course that uses a comprehensive

Helping You Help Others The Social Brain is a brand new 501(c)(3) non profit in the state of New York. They are on the brink of breaking through as one of the most unique and helpful organizations that serves those suffering from a brain injury. Their mission is to provide brain injury survivors the opportunity to build friendships through socialization and reduced isolation. This organization began in January 2019 when a group of individuals, families and professionals joined together to brainstorm ideas of how they can help brain injury survivors socialize and partake in various hobbies together. Many survivors spend much of their lives in and out of rehab and home feeling isolated, but The Social Brain formed to change that. After hosting various events for survivors such as a day at Sweetbriar Nature Center, a Bowling Event, a Library Day and an afternoon at Four Star Ranch, it was obvious that they were reaching a population in need. Just last month, The Social Brain was granted 501(c)(3) status in the state of New York and they have just started working out of a community center located at 202 Middle Country Road in Middle Island. The Social Brain operates solely on volunteers and their outreach comes not only from word of mouth, but from help through their recent partnerships with local hospitals, school districts, neurology departments, Peconic Speech Services in Riverhead and St. Joseph’s College. Survivors from all over Long Island are welcome to get involved with The Social Brain. On average, each event they host has about 30-40 participates and there is no age restrictions. Recently a 4-week session hosted by The Social Brain and Peconic Speech Services in Riverhead started to help survivors learn social skills, build friendships, find cues from others and interact with peers. The first session was on August 6th and the following 3 sessions will be on August 13th, 20th and 27th. Age groups are broken down from ages 5-7, 8-12, teens and adults. An expansive study of animal species was the main focus of third grade students in Julie Celecia’s class at Waverly Avenue Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District last school year during an individual research project exploring different animals. As part of the project, students utilized laptop computers to compile

information on the animal they chose, including koalas, snakes, foxes, red pandas, bears, zebras and frogs. Through their research, students identified important characteristics that were unique to their specific animal such as life cycle, diet, habitat, classification and behavior. Rich was instrumental in securing funding, which initiated the three-field complex at Oxhead Road Elementary and the two ball fields that started a relationship with Grace Presbyterian Church. The Grace property has continued to grow and evolve since then. Often times we don’t realize that the good things we have started with the hard work and dedication of a few. Rich was involved in every aspect of his community and often rose quickly to a leadership role. He has been involved in local political groups, local sports groups, the Centereach Civic Association, The Selden Civic Association and the Chamber of Commerce. When the Centereach Civic started suggesting that it should start a local

Chamber of Commerce, Rich volunteered to help make that happen. After all, he knows small business and he knows his community through and through. He strongly believes in a community that works together to make for everyone’s benefit. While visiting his new showroom, which just opened this past March, you can see and read the many accolades acknowledging his hard work and dedication to our community for so long. Quite literally every group mentioned already has presented Rich with a special recognition award citing many accomplishments. In addition, the Middle Country Times named him Man of the Year in 2005. Rich takes pride in all these acknowledgements, but most know him as quietly working behind the scenes, never looking

for credit, just results. Your Floor Store’s success and stellar reputation has not gone unnoticed in his industry either. He was recently approached by Abbey Design Centers to be one of their esteemed design centers. This is quite a coveted assignment as it allows Your Floor Store to have access to many manufacturer’s products not available to every flooring store. Also, Rich still visits every job himself to ensure the product selected, the sizing and install are all done right. In our area alone quite a few flooring type stores have come and gone, however Rich himself and Your Floor Store has been solidly serving us for 35 years.
