On Wednesday, August 16th, Long Island Adventureland will be celebrating National Roller Coaster day with FREE rides on both of their two awesome coasters for guests who donate to the park’s annual school supply drive. The Turbulence Coaster was added to the local landmark park in the summer of 2015,

THOUGHT TO PONDER
A Funny Thing Happened A funny thing happened on my last trip to the beach; rather, several amusingly bizarre things that left my friend and I shaking our heads in bewilderment and wondering if we were, in fact, part of some sort of candid camera exposé. On this particular afternoon, we literally sailed along the Robert Moses Causeway, over all three bridges, and were parked in less than 30 minutes - a record-breaking feat, to be sure, and a far improvement over the recent painstakingly slow bumper-to-bumper expeditions we have had to contend with. Amazed at this fortunate turn of events, we began to unload the car and make our way to the sand, when we noticed the deafening silence. Usually, the beach is filled with the sounds of children laughing and playing, radios blasting a cacophony of musical notes, the waves crashing against the shoreline… but on this particular afternoon, there was only silence. It was as if we had entered a parallel universe, a bubble of tranquility. Once we settled in, I noticed the enormous number of seagulls who seemed to be hovering nearby, taking off and landing a bit too close
for comfort. Just as I was thinking this one particular winged creature appeared to be launching its flight awfully low to the ground, my friend burst into laughter as he barely cleared her head. “He literally just hit me in the head!” she exclaimed. “I just felt his feet running across my hair!” From Candid Camera to Alfred Hitchcock, in a matter of minutes. After an hour or so of baking in the hot sun, we decided to embark on our regular trek toward the Lighthouse in search of seashells, and of course that picture perfect shot of the waves crashing onto the shore. This time, I decided to make it my mission to collect several dozen oyster shells in order to create a heart-shaped work of art in the sand. About one hour, and several ocean wipeouts of my masterpiece later, we decided to head back. Now generally, after a lengthy absence, it is perfectly normal to find our blanket surrounded by new neighbors, or perhaps none, as the beach tends to begin to empty in the late afternoon sun. This time, we were greeted by a man, sitting in a single chair, surrounded by about a half dozen assorted beach bags,

coolers and folding chairs - and an umbrella… one giant umbrella, staked right at the edge of my blanket, engulfing our entire area in complete shadow. I contemplated asking him to join us; then settled on politely asking him to move, as I hadn’t come to the beach to share his umbrella. He stared at me blankly, expressionless. Then, without a word, he slowly, deliberately got up and moved his umbrella - about half an inch. Completely bewildered, my friend and I exchanged a look. Was he serious? Were we the only people who understood the concept of personal boundaries? An entire field of sand, and here we were fighting over one square foot of space. Flabbergasted, we decided to gather our things and move slightly up the beach, to a completely empty expanse devoid of rogue umbrellas, seagulls and any other potential pitfalls. As we settled into this new spot, we were startled by the sound of people squealing and turned to see our old area now engulfed by the high tide. And there, in the middle of the surf, sat our old friend and his umbrella.

Students at the Eastern Suffolk BOCES Masera Learning Center (MLC) applied the sequencing skills they learned during the regular school year to a summer crafting project. They created a beach scene and personalized foam visors. Sequencing is an essential skill for children to learn. Identifying components and placing them in order with a beginning, middle, and an end teaches children and students in many special education classrooms how
to make connections and keep ideas in the correct order. Building Coordinator Lisa Newcombe said, “The students are engaged in educational learning experiences with every activity they participate in during the summer program.” For the beach themed crafting project, each student was given decals and icons related to the beach; functional things you do with friends and family and seasonal things that would be found at the
beach. “They were prompted with ‘Where does the umbrella go?’ or ‘Where would we find the seagull?’, the student would find the umbrella decal and place it appropriately in the sand on the beach, likewise the decal of the seagull would be appropriately placed in the blue sky above the water,” said Newcombe. Summer activities at MLC are sponsored by the schools’ Parent Teacher Organization (PTO). They are fun, educational, and inspire creativity.

On Monday, July 17th, Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey attended a tour at GKN Aerospace with the Girl Scouts of Suffolk County (GSSC). The tour took place at GKN’s location in Amityville and was attended by GSSC Leadership, GKN Aerospace staff and girl scouts from various troops in Suffolk County. The tour was led by female GKN employees and organized to expose the Girl Scouts to nontraditional career paths in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). For the tour, the Girl Scouts were broken up into small groups led by women working in various career fields at GKN Aerospace to show the breadth of career opportunities available. “I was glad to be a part of the tour today and enjoyed helping the Girl Scouts learn about different career paths that they might not have been exposed to previously,” said Legislator McCaffrey. “GKN Aerospace were incredible hosts and made the tour memorable for everyone involved.” GKN Aerospace is a premier supplier of complex titanium and aluminum airframe components and assemblies serving commercial and defense customers worldwide for more than 60 years. They have extensive

The Longwood School District’s annual Charity Golf Outing held at Spring Lake Golf Club in Middle Island gathered more than 140 golfers and raised much-needed funds for Longwood families in need. Held on Monday, June 26th, proceeds were divided between two recipients, a Longwood elementary teacher whose son is battling cancer and the Blessings in a Backpack Longwood Chapter. Charles E. Walters (CEW) Elementary School teacher Kim Dixon’s son, Sean, is currently undergoing treatment for several different forms of cancer. Proceeds from the outing will be used to offset
a portion of their mounting medical expenses. “As soon as we announced that the outing would support one of our own Longwood School family members, the outpouring of support we received was overwhelming,” said Longwood Assistant Principal and Outing Chairperson Scott Reese. “I am so grateful to our participants and sponsors for their dedication to make this event such a success.” Outing rules included Scramble Format, a Long Drive Contest and Closest to the Pin. The winning team has been added to the Golf Outing trophy, housed at the high school.
Now in its eighth year, the annual event has raised more than $100,000 in support of the students, staff, and community residents of the Longwood School District.

Back to School Supply Drive The Town of Brookhaven Youth Bureau’s INTERFACE Back to School Supply Drive will begin on Monday, July 31st and run through Friday, August 28th. Collection centers are located in the lobby of Town Hall at One Independence Hill in Farmingville and the Highway Department Facility located at 1140 Old Town Road in Coram and the Rose Caracappa Senior Center, located at 739 Route 25A in Mt. Sinai. The Youth Bureau is asking for donations of pens, calculators, backpacks, notebooks, lunch boxes, folders, glue, binders and more. The supplies will be distributed to needy families who might otherwise not be able to provide them to their children before school begins. Last year,
the Youth Bureau was able to collect enough supplies to help over 2,200 children prepare for school. Motivation to be More Active Today’s students arguably have more on their plates than any generation that came before them. But even with their hectic schedules, kids still have free time, which many are not always using in the healthiest ways possible. inspiration from the top athletes throughout the world, Ralph looks up to boxers he knows personally and uses their robust work ethic to drive him toward success. “I look at the people I’ve known, and seeing them work hard in the gym really drives me,” he said. “I see local boxers coming up and I know that they’re going to be great, so it’s an honor to train alongside them.” In order to maintain his successful boxing career, Ralph knows that keeping up with his studies is just as important. There are some days, he says, that he’ll begin training at his gym immediately after school ends and stay there until as late as 11 p.m. before waking up at 6 a.m. the next day to repeat the cycle. He credits his training with trainers
Dan Rhodes and Mike Murphy as an essential contribution to his recent successes in the ring. “I do a lot of cardio, including sprinting and running on the tracks, and then I’ll go back to the gym for strength training regiments for an hour or two, practicing the same moves over and over until all of my techniques are second nature,” he said. “A lot of people think boxing is all about working out, but it’s really about mental technique.” Ralph plans on competing in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, from where he aspires to take home a gold medal for boxing. “I want to put my name in the history books for boxing; I want to be remembered as one of the greats,” he said. “I’m working hard enough, and I know I’ll get there.”

Going Above and Beyond On July 20th, Councilman Dan Panico and the Brookhaven Town Board honored Tri-Hamlet resident Bayley Cuomo for lending a compassionate, helping hand to her neighbors in need. On July 2nd, her nextdoor neighbor’s house caught fire and the family lost most of their belongings. Bayley, who
is 16 years old, took to Facebook asking for any donations to help the family. Through the July 4th weekend she collected bags of donations including food, clothing, furniture, pet supplies for the family dog and other necessities, including a place for the family to stay. When asked about her generosity, Bayley
answered, “It was the right thing to do. You’re supposed to help people who need and deserve help.” Councilman Panico said, “We can all learn a great deal from Bayley’s acts of kindness. She is an amazing young woman who is most deserving of praise and recognition.”
Teachers provide many things to their students. In addition to an education, support and guidance, many teachers also feel compelled to enhance their classrooms with supplies they’ve purchased out-ofpocket. According to a poll of 1,500 teachers conducted by the educational resource Edutopia, 93 percent of teachers feel obligated or somewhat obligated to buy school supplies for their
classrooms with their own money. The Education Market Association says that virtually all teachers wind up paying out of pocket for supplies. The amounts spent annually can be upwards of $1,000 per teacher. In addition, not all of the teachers funding supplies work in low-income districts. A report published in early 2016 by the Center for Budget and Policy Priorities found that
many states now provide less financial support per student than they did before the recession took hold roughly nine years ago. Districts forced to work under tight budgets are increasingly outsourcing the costs of supplies to parents. When parents fail to provide supplies, teachers are bearing the brunt of the costs to avoid seeing their students go without necessary resources.

No stranger to the sport of boxing, the 16-year-old had wanted to pick up the gloves since age 5. However, it wasn’t until he turned 13 that he first stepped into the ring and pursued his dream. Since his boxing career began, Ralph has been named a two-time Junior Olympic Metro champion, three-time New York State Champion and two-time National Finalist. Additionally, he is currently ranked as the number one boxer for his age and weight class in the country. Rather than drawing

Students in the Eastern Suffolk BOCES Basic Animal Dog Care and Training Program were excited to meet Investigator Turbo, a German Shorthaired Pointer, and his handler and partner, Investigator Hille. Both work for the Department of Corrections on Riker’s Island in New York City. Turbo is bilingual and understands commands in both German and English. He is being trained to sniff out drugs on Riker’s Island, specifically in the
the knowledge base of her students. “It’s important for the students to learn how different breeds of dogs are being utilized for different types of work, the capacity in which they can work with these dogs, and career opportunities.” Students learned that it takes eight weeks for a dog to get certified. Investigator Hille said, “We begin with a dog that has a blank slate of abilities and we continuously introduce a new drug for them to recognize and find.” A simple method is used to determine which puppy in a litter will be a good police working dog. “We roll a ball through a group of puppies; the one that goes after the ball is the one that gets picked.” Turbo does not work for food. If he locates any drugs, he immediately sits and points to where the drugs are hidden. His reward is his special toy. Investigator Hill demonstrated Turbo’s abilities four times throughout the session. The visit concluded with a question-and-answer discussion leaving students with career opportunity information directly related to working in law enforcement and K-9 units.

Lesson of the Day In Art Teacher Darlene Siracusano’s class at Eastern Suffolk BOCES Brookhaven Learning Center students are learning that it’s good to share! Sharing is really a life skill but it can be challenging. Siracusano used art as a medium for her students to learn how
to compromise, take turns, and negotiate. The students learned about finding joy in sharing when they read Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister. “It’s about the positive aspect of sharing,” said Siracusano. “It’s not about just giving things away
but learning that sharing brings happiness and a feeling of doing good.” Together the students cut fish scales from shiny aluminum foil, painted their fish, and enjoyed the lessons of Rainbow Fish in their classroom.

On Tuesday, July 18th, some of the younger patrons, third and fourth graders, participated in a lively book discussion about the adventures and misadventures of Clementine by Sara Pennypacker. From cutting her friend Margaret’s hair to stopping the pigeon wars in her building,
Clementine’s undertakings are both trying and triumphant. Discussing the first book of this series was exciting not only for those who attended but also for Children’s Librarian Lori Crimaudo. Seeing Clementine through their eyes and following her daily encounters with
wonder and humor, made it all the more enjoyable and only adds to a lifelong love of reading. After the discussion, the children painted their very own ceramic cat bank. Just another day of summer fun at the Connetquot Public Library!

Wenonah Elementary School students in the Sachem Central School District are gaining collaborative learning skills and an appreciation of horticulture as they work to provide the less fortunate with fresh crops from their “Giving Garden.” A project developed by the Wenonah Leadership Council in 2015, the crops are gathered by students and donated to Island Harvest, a nonprofit organization offering food services to those in need. As part of the initiative, students in grades K-5
hone their knowledge of horticulture by participating in all steps of the growing process. Seeds are planted in cut milk containers collected by leadership students to germinate seeds. Seedlings are then nurtured in the classroom until they have matured enough to be planted. The garden, which parents constructed from materials donated by the PTA, is composed of cedar boxes filled with organic soil to hold the many varieties of vegetables students plant. To date, the students have planted and harvested such crops as
tomatoes, squash, peppers, eggplant, beans, corn and fresh herbs. Reflecting on the impact of the project, Principal Christine DiPaola said, “There has been incredible enthusiasm for this project across grade levels. Career Exploration
Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) has shown young teens the importance of testing potential career paths. Each summer, ESBOCES holds its popular Summer Career Exploration Program for students entering 8th, 9th and 10th grades so they can experiment with potential college and career possibilities through two-week, handson introductory courses. This year the program ran from July 10th-21st at the three ESBOCES technical career centers located in Oakdale, Bellport, and Riverhead. Federal and statewide education initiatives focus on ensuring that students leave high school properly prepared for college and adequately equipped to compete in a demanding global workforce. These courses provide students with an opportunity to explore career interests long before graduation, show them what is required to succeed in
those fields, and introduce them to career programs available in grades 11 and 12 through such educational providers as ESBOCES. To be eligible to participate in the Summer Exploration Program, students had to be entering grades 8-10 in the fall of 2017 and be 12 years old by the time the program commenced. Sessions ran Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the ESBOCES career and technical centers in Bellport, Oakdale, and Riverhead. Course offerings included Culinary Arts and Baking, Automotive Technology,
Cosmetology, Basic Pet Care and Training, and Welding. Said Rob Van Brunt, program administrator for Career, Technical, and Adult Education at ESBOCES, “It’s never too early to begin investigating possible career tracks, and our Summer Exploration Program provides students with the opportunity to begin thinking seriously about the livelihoods they may pursue and where they want to study. The Giving Garden
For a quarter of a century, Star Island Yacht Club has been hosting its annual mid-summer sport fishing tournament: the Mako, Thresher & Tuna Tournament. This year’s tournament will take place from August 4th to 5th. With overnight fishing and expanded categories, this will be the most exciting tournament sport fishing enthusiasts and spectators will see this August on the East End. Prizes will be offered for Heaviest Mako, Heaviest
Thresher and Heaviest Tuna. Once again, anglers can also bring in any species of Tuna, including Blue Fin; this gives the participants better odds of bringing in the winning catch. As a result of this expansion last year, Star Island paid out more than $150,000 in cash and prizes. Back for this year’s tournament is overnight fishing, which will allow participants to stay out overnight, in the event they did not have fish to weigh
in for the first day or if they weighed in earlier and wanted to get a head start on Day Two. Although only one shark may be weighed in per day, more than one tuna may be weighed per day, as long as the anglers are in accordance with National Marine Fisheries regulations. Last year, the heaviest shark caught was a 288-pound Mako aboard Capt. Chuck Mallinson’s Joy Sea. Participants and fans will also have the opportunity
to learn about these mysterious, sometimes dangerous and often misunderstood species from marine biologists who will be on-site. These marine biologists will be available to comment on the migration habits, predatory nature and the health of the species. Fishing starts at 6 a.m. on both days and ends on Friday at 6 p.m. and on Saturday at 5 p.m. An awards ceremony will commence at the end of the tournament. Entry fee is

For anglers who would like to get in on the action but do not own a boat, the Star Island Yacht Club Charter Boat fishing fleet is available for hire for one or both days of the tournament. exclusively. Dockage is available on a first-come, first-serve basis. EMTs Honored
Benjamin Cohen and Danielle Cohen, two emergency medical technicians with Northwell Health’s Center for Emergency Medical Services (CEMS) in Syosset, were recognized as Stars of Life by the American Ambulance Association (AAA) at an awards ceremony in Washington, D.C. The dynamic duo, who are unrelated, were joined by Northwell colleagues William Bailey (Lenox Hill Hospital) and Robert Mazzo (Staten Island University Hospital), who were also recognized. The AAA highlights excellence and contributions made by EMS workers across the county at the annual event in the nation’s capitol. Mr. Cohen, a resident of Searingtown, has been an EMT for six years. After working in a hospital emergency department, he says there was no hesitation to get out
in the field and into an ambulance himself. He got his EMT certification and joined Northwell Health’s CEMS in 2014. Mr. Cohen says it was the strong moral structure he had growing up that influenced him. “It’s good to put yourself into situations where you can help people. That was a big drive,” he said. “My father is a dentist and he was also a lifeguard so he always got us into that. When he had a heart attack it was scary for the whole family because we thought we’d lose him. I guess in the back of your mind you always hope you have the skill to help somebody if that were to happen to a family member.” Ms. Cohen, of Stony Brook, has been an EMT for 20 years, and like Mr. Cohen, a personal experience led her into the career of helping others. “When I was younger my grandfather was really
sick and he was treated very poorly at home and in the hospital by the people that were supposed to be taking care of him,” she said. “At a very young age I vowed that if I was ever in a position to help someone, I would never let them be treated the way my grandfather was treated. That was my intention and still is today.” Ms. Cohen joined Northwell CEMS in 2002 both in the field as an EMT and also as a communications specialist. She continues both roles today. She started her career at age 18, working for the Port Jefferson Volunteer Ambulance. Of both recipients, “We are honored and privileged to work with such great people on our team,” Thomas Hughes, field supervisor at Northwell CEMS, said of the two recipients. “Seeing them recognized for their hard work and dedication to the profession makes us all very proud and provides a platform for the recognition of the EMS industry, as well as the great people that protect and serve within it.” To be eligible for nomination for the AAA Stars of Life program, ambulance services employees must go beyond their given work responsibilities, contribute to their communities through volunteer work or leadership, and have service records that incorporate the mission of ambulance operation.
