Suffolk Federal’s Vice President of Information Technology and extreme distance marathon runner Eva Casale heightened awareness for our veterans and raised almost $30,000 in support of Hope for the Warriors. Eva completed seven marathons, with extra stops amounting to more than 194 miles, over the course of seven days. Each day’s marathon focused on honoring local servicemen killed in action and was linked to the communities they called home. The team delivered over 184 flowers at Points of Honor during the 7-day program and the public was also able to participate in the final 3.1 mile leg of her journey at the end of each day.

“This was a heartfelt running tour of over 194 miles which enabled me to utilize my passion for running to bring Long Islanders together to support programs and services for veterans and to acknowledge how much ‘Every Veteran is Appreciated,’” explained Casale. “I created Team E.V.A. which stands for ‘Every Veteran Appreciated,’ to honor those who have made the

Metamorphosis “We delight in the beauty of the butterfly, but rarely admit the changes it has gone through to achieve that beauty.” ~ Maya Angelou We all have a path, a journey we take through life. Some are relatively direct, with few bumps and curves along the way; others prove far more winding and full of detours. In the end, though, I believe we all reach the destination we are meant to. Eventually.

Last week, I touched on some of the ways I go about my craft, and how my writing has evolved through the years. In speaking to the next generation of potential journalists, the best experience I can draw upon is my own. There was a time when I was in their shoes, sitting in high school classrooms and then college lecture halls, wondering where exactly this path I had chosen would lead. It was during those formative years that I looked to my own sources of inspiration in the writing field for guidance, absorbing their styles and studying their techniques for

some hint of how I could apply these skills to my own drafts and create a unique voice.

Just today, in fact, I found myself perusing the archives of past “In Step” columns, searching for a tribute I had written following the passing of Ed Lowe, master storyteller, and one mentor I had the extreme good fortune to work with during my time here at South Bay. Seldom do we have the opportunity to meet our idols, let alone share in our mutual love of a particular craft. No matter the difference in age, or how vast the generational gap, there is simply no substitute for the wisdom of someone who has experienced those things you only dare to dream.

If you had asked me back in my formative years where I saw myself in ten, fifteen years time, I probably would have shrugged and said, “Hopefully reporting from the clubhouse of the New York Yankees” or “traveling across the country ala Almost Famous, searching for the next big story to be featured in Rolling Stone Magazine.” Realistic? Perhaps

not entirely. But these were the people, and the positions, I admired from afar and wished to emulate. Maybe it was the sense of prestige I found attractive, the celebrity aspect.

Fast forward into the real world of adulthood, and it wasn’t long before I discovered that, if you truly have a love for writing - or any particular skill - it truly doesn’t matter where you do it, what the topics entail or how much notoriety you gain in the process. The fact is, you can make a significant difference on any level, even within the confines of the local community you grew up in, surrounded by the family, friends and local followers you may be fortunate to gain along the way. And that is exactly what has happened, from this desk in Farmingdale, as I put fingertips to keyboard each week, drawing from my own life experiences and those who have inspired me.

The path may not always be clear, but the passion has never wavered. That, above all else, is what makes the journey worthwhile.

At that meeting, the industry unanimously supported two demands: 1) Challenge the federal quotas; and 2) Reform the commercial fishing licensing system to improve access and transferability of licenses.

The Commissioner promised action.

Assemblyman Thiele stated, “I am pleased to see that the DEC is keeping its promise to support a vital Long Island industry that is getting choked out by poor regulation.

Commercial fishermen have long suffered from unfair and inequitable quotas arbitrarily set by the federal government based on faulty data.

Additionally, the current regulations related to the transfer of permits and licenses have thwarted the proper operation of this industry.”

“We must resolve these issues with our fishing community at the table in full participation. The economic survival of our commercial fishermen must be our ultimate priority. I, too, applaud the DEC’s efforts to fight for fair and equitable quotas and will continue my efforts to protect this vital industry,” said Senator LaValle.

In March, the DEC retained the services of marine fisheries consultant George LaPointe, who will facilitate the meetings.

A former Commissioner of the Maine Department of Natural Resources, Mr. LaPointe will analyze and evaluate the current marine commercial licensing system and provide recommendations on how to improve and revise it. The topics to be addressed include, specifying qualifications for license issuance;

license transferability; identifying means of entry for new participants in New York’s fisheries; apprenticeship; and resolution of the latent licenses issue.

There are several meetings scheduled throughout Long Island, including two on the East End: Thursday, August 2nd, at 6:00 p.m.

Leading the Way

For the Gamers Club at Sachem High School North, a tri-tournament competition this June for the game “Overwatch” provided students with a chance to compete in person against gamers from other school districts on Long Island.

Held on June 6 at Waypoint Gaming in Garden City, the tournament is the first of many where Sachem North will be competing as part of the High School Esports League. The tournament, which also featured teams from Bay Shore and St.

Anthony’s high schools, allowed the student gamers to compete in the same area rather than over the internet.

At the completion of the tournament, the Sachem North gamers tied for first place with the team from Bay Shore High School.

“This was our largest enrollment so far and the campers were both supportive and enthusiastic,” said coach Hertz. “The varsity girls joined the coaching staff and did a great job of teaching and serving as strong female role models for the campers. The best part for me is that all of the coaches had attended the camp as young campers as they were just starting out in volleyball. Now, they get the chance to give back to the sport that helped mold

Connetquot Central School District students in grades six through nine recently took part in a series of free football clinics, “Monday Night Football,” during the summer in an effort to improve basic skills, conditioning and work on team-building drills.

The coaching staff was pleased with the turnout and enthusiasm of these

Each clinic session ended with competitive and fun games that the young students enjoyed. Working with Connetquot’s varsity coaching staff and players inspired the campers to improve their efforts as they look forward to the beginning of school and the 2018 football season.

Project-based learning inspired fifth-grade students at Waverly Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District to go above and beyond as they developed a contest to promote recycling across the building.

A group of students in Danielle Sexton and Kristina Fulcher’s class

developed the initiative after being asked the question of how they can help the environment.

They then collaborated to develop a buildingwide recycling contest, where the grade level who recycled the most plastic water bottles would receive a pajama, movie and popcorn party. Through rigorous promotion, the

students spread the word about the contest and also created signs for each garbage can in the building.

At the completion of the contest, the student effort earned $30 in recycled water bottles, which was used to purchase the reward for the fourth- and fifth-grade students who won the contest.

Pen Pal Tour Technology helped to connect classrooms when Tamarac Elementary School students in the Sachem Central School District created a virtual field trip for their pen pals at Dayton Elementary School in Manorville during an activity that utilized the DoInk app.

Third-grade students in Gloria Monaco’s class used scripts written on Google Docs to explain specific destinations around the school building that they showed to their pen pal friends. With help from technology integration specialist Claudia Camassa, students recorded their

Exploring Careers assigned sections in front of a green screen and then used the DoInk app to layer the video and images on top of one another.

The integration of the DoInk app allowed students to incorporate written and hands-on lessons to connect with their pen pals in an exciting way.

Each summer, Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) holds its popular Summer Career Exploration Program for students entering 8th, 9th and 10th grades so they can experiment with potential career possibilities through two-week, project-based introductory courses.

This year the program ran from July 9-20 at the three ESBOCES technical career centers located in Oakdale, Bellport, and Riverhead.

Federal and state education initiatives focus on ensuring that students leave high school properly prepared for college and adequately equipped to compete in a demanding

global workforce. These courses provide students with an opportunity to explore career interests long before graduation, show them what is required to succeed in those fields, and introduce them to career programs available in grades 11 and 12 through such educational providers as ESBOCES. To be eligible to participate in the Summer Exploration Program, students had to be entering grades 8-10 in the fall of 2018 and be 12 years old by the time the program commenced. Sessions ran Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the ESBOCES career

and technical centers in Bellport, Oakdale, and Riverhead. Course offerings included Culinary Arts, Automotive Technology, Cosmetology, Basic Pet Care and Training, and Welding.

Future Educators For Sachem High School students interested in a career in education, the Child Development class provides a hands-on learning experience that allows future educators to apply classroom concepts at the elementary level under the direction of the class teacher.

After the completion of Child Development I, which covers the beginning stages of life and the lifecycle, senior students have the opportunity to enroll in Childhood

Development II, where they explore educational concepts that apply to classroom learning.

Through the class, students create lesson plans, study classroom management, special education, education methods and education theory.

As part of the course, students return to the Sachem elementary school they once attended to assist a classroom teacher for three hours each week, totaling 36 hours by the completion of the course.

For the final evaluation, students deliver a lesson they prepared to the class they have been working with during the previous weeks.

“Our class allows students to clearly see what a future career in education would look like,” Child Development teacher Debra Lopez said. “It helps to develop concrete ideas about what grade level they would like to teach and where they would excel most as an educator.”

Nearly 250 people recently gathered at Glen Head Country Club in Glen Head, NY for the ACLD Foundation 2018 Annual Golf Outing, which raised more than $155,000 to benefit Bethpageheadquartered Adults and Children with Learning and Developmental Disabilities, Inc. (ACLD) along with the services as well programs it provides for adults and children with autism, learning and developmental disabilities.

This year’s Golf Outing honoree was Lane Sieman of Long Beach, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Long Beach-based Chem Rx Pharmacy Services, a long-term care pharmacy servicing the medicationrelated needs of people in residential supportive apartments and homes, intermediate care, adult day care, assisted living and skilled nursing care facilities. With the launch of ACLD’s Telemedicine Program in 2017, Chem Rx has been an integral partner in helping to decrease unnecessary emergency room visits for adults residing in ACLD community residences and apartments, which is why Mr. Sieman was selected as this year’s Golf Outing honoree. The two organizations have been working together for nearly three years.

An ardent supporter of people of different abilities, Mr. Sieman spoke of his early life experiences while accepting his award that included his mother being a special education teacher and the fond memories of volunteering for the Special Olympics

while growing up in the midwest.

Heart Walk Chairman Named

Vito Giannola is the Vice President and Treasurer North America for Luxottica Group, a world leader in the design, manufacture and

distribution of fashion, luxury, sports and performance eyewear, has been named Chairman of the American Heart Association’s 2018 Long

Island Heart Walk.

This year’s walk will be taking place on Sunday, September 16th at Jones Beach in Wantagh.

In his current position, Vito leads the North American Corporate Treasury function, managing Luxottica’s portfolio of investments, risk and liquidity. In addition to his role as Treasurer, over his 32 years at Luxottica Vito has held many Director and Executive level roles.

In the early part of his career he managed the finance, operations and distribution divisions of the wholesale business, and was instrumental in developing the processes and policies necessary to address a business tripling

Distinguished Youth Awards Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory celebrated the inaugural year of his Distinguished Youth Awards Program by presenting awards to 35 young adults who participated in four areas to earn Bronze, Silver and Gold medals.

The event was held at the William H. Rogers Legislature Building in Hauppauge where the students gathered with their parents to be recognized by Presiding Officer Gregory and the Legislator representing the district in which they live.

Students, 12 of whom earned the Bronze Award, Nine who worked to earn a Silver Award and 14 earning a Gold, completed

requirements that included 200 hours of Volunteer Service, 100 hours of Personal Development, 15 park visits for the Exploration part of the program and 100 hours of Physical Fitness.

In total, the students who ranged in age from 13-18, completed 5,075 hours of Volunteer Service, 7,061 of Personal Development, 361 park visits for Exploration and 8,035 hours of Physical Fitness; a remarkable achievement given the challenging nature of the requirements.

Joining the Presiding Officer were Legislators Tom Donnelly, Leslie Kennedy, Kevin McCaffrey, Robert Trotta, Monica Martinez, William “Doc” Spencer who presented individual proclamations for youth in their districts, and serving as the presenter, Deputy Presiding Officer Robert Calarco.

Presiding Officer Gregory thanked Massiel Fuentes, Program Coordinator, under whose leadership the students completed the program.

Refreshments were served in the lobby following the presentations.

Registration for the program is currently underway and will be open until September 30th.

Honor Flight Long Island (HFLI) is our local, nonprofit chapter of the national Honor Flight Network.

HFLI organizes, hosts and pays for the biannual flights, which depart from Islip MacArthur Airport. As part of the day’s events, veterans and their guardians (volunteers who

make the trips possible) fly to Baltimore-Washington International Airport, where a motor coach takes them on a 50-minute drive to D.C. and the WWII, Korean and Vietnam memorials, to Arlington National Cemetery, and on to Air Force, Navy plus other memorials.

HFLI President Bill Jones told the 50 Veterans who made the last D.C. trip on May 12th, 2018, “Your country said that it needed

you, and you said yes, I will go.“ Jones said his group flies our local heroes to visit and reflect together at our national memorials.

“Long Islanders who have a loved one interested in taking an Honor Flight, should contact us and we’ll make all the required arrangements.” He added they’re now lining up 2019 trips for eligible Vietnam veterans. Bill Jones lives with his wife and daughter in Southampton, NY.

The Fresh Air Fund’s Suffolk and Nassau Counties’ Volunteer Committees held their annual “Day in the Friendly Towns” on Wednesday, July 11th. Sponsored and hosted by White Post Farms, Fresh Air children,

their host families, and The Fund’s NYC Community Agency Partners enjoyed pony rides, bouncy castles with water slides, and a petting zoo with goats, llamas, camels, giraffes and zebras! This summer, thousands of children will

enjoy a summer outside of the city with volunteer host families in suburban, rural and small town communities along the East Coast and Southern Canada through The Fresh Air Fund’s Friendly Towns Program.

“I’m excited to go swimming and to watch the stars at night. I can’t see them at night in the city!” explains ten-year-old Tyrone about his Fresh Air experiences.

The Fresh Air Fund, an independent, not-for-profit agency, has provided free summer experiences to more than 1.8 million New York City children from low-income communities since 1877. WELCOMED TO CAPITOL - On Tuesday, July 24th, Congressman Lee Zeldin welcomed the 106th Rescue Wing, which operates out of Francis S. Gabreski Air National Guard Base in Westhampton Beach, New York, to the United States Capitol, during which he thanked them for their service and sacrifice in defense of our great nation. Earlier this year, four NY-1 residents of the 106th Rescue Wing fell in the line of duty in Western Iraq.

Along with members of the Long Island Growth Working Group, Suffolk County Legislator Steven J. Flotteron recently met with the new LIRR President Phil Eng to discuss long-term vision plans for the railroad.

The discussion included recent and upcoming infrastructure investments,

updates on Double Track, Third Track, upgrades at Penn Station, plans to improve the railroad’s performance, reliability and communication and connections to TOD opportunities.

“The LIRR continues to make necessary infrastructure upgrades in an effort to provide the

best possible service and reliability to its customers,” stated Legislator Flotteron.

“These working discussion are a tribute to its leadership and workers.”

Suffolk resident and president/CEO of NYU Winthrop Hospital (Mineola, NY), John Collins, was elected chair of the Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council (NSHC) at the group’s Annual Meeting held July 11th, 2018. His two-year term expires in 2020.

Collins is a renowned healthcare strategist and financing expert. His keen business foresight led to the successful acquisition of 60-plus faculty and community practices in over 150 locations.

More recently, he led the hospital into an affiliation agreement with NYU

Langone Health, enabling the two organizations to expand, enhance, and clinically integrate the healthcare services of these two outstanding healthcare entities.

He began his career at Winthrop in 1997 as chief financial officer. He later assumed the duties of chief operating officer, before being named president/ CEO in 2009. Under his leadership, NYU Winthrop Hospital was recognized in the first-ever edition of U.S. News and World Report’s Best Hospitals Metro Area Rankings for 10 highperforming specialties.

Prior to joining NYU Winthrop Hospital, Collins served as chief financial officer at South Nassau Communities Hospital.

Collins holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Queens College and is a certified public accountant.
