The Marty Lyons Foundation (MLF) recently hosted its 29th Annual Celebrity Golf Classic at the Old Westbury Golf and Country Club.

The golf outing was the foundation’s largest fundraising event of the year. Hundreds of supporters played golf and attended the evening festivities. The Marty

Lyons Foundation was founded by Marty Lyons, a former NFL defensive lineman for the New York Jets and member of the legendary “New York Sack Exchange.” The MLF grants wishes to children, between the ages of three and seventeen, who have terminal or lifethreatening illnesses, and is the only nonprofit in the nation to offer second

County Sheriff Vincent DeMarco announced today that 19 children from Suffolk County will head upstate early Sunday morning for a fun-filled week at the New York State Sheriffs’ Association Institute’s 2014 Summer Camp. The Sheriffs’ Summer Camp is designed to provide a solid recreational program while fostering a sense of good citizenship. This will mark the 37th year of the camp’s operation.

The Sheriffs’ Summer Camp, which is located near Penn Yan in Yates County, is supported by the Sheriffs’ Association’s Honorary Members through their contributions and annual dues. This year the camp will accommodate over 900 deserving boys and girls from across New York State.

Sheriff DeMarco, in discussing the objectives and goals of the camp said,

Snapshots & Timehops By: Jamie Lynn Ryan At this time last year, I was in the midst of an eightday tour of Ireland with 13 members of my family.

And today, thanks to the wonders of a clever little app called “Timehop,” I am able to relive each day of that memorable vacation via the handful of photos I posted on Facebook throughout the journey. And they say too much sharing is bad!

Of course, this is but a small sampling of the nearly 1,000 pictures I snapped over the course of the week, from takeoff to landing and everything in between. Seeing as I

am slightly obsessed with finding random scenes and candid shots to capture on a daily basis, you can just imagine how thrilled I was to explore one of the most beautiful lands abroad.

Under any circumstances, it qualified one of the greatest experiences of my life. Coupled with the fact that it marked my first time on a plane and my first journey out of the country, well, that just added to the highlight reel. Considering that, prior to this, I had never ventured beyond the span of states between Vermont and Virginia, it was quite a momentous occasion.

This past Christmas, I

attempted to compile just a “few” favorites to create calendars and a small book of the journey as gifts. Seemed like a simple enough task; however, four hours after my initial brainstorm, I was still sitting at my computer, poring over hundreds of photos, comparing and eliminating until I had it narrowed down to the “perfect” mix.

As if there was such a thing. The perfection is in the moments you create, the unplanned, unstaged instants that bring to life stories and anecdotes to last a lifetime.

We could all use a few more of those.

New AMVETS Facility Opens

On Saturday July 19th, Legislator John M. Kennedy, Jr. joined with AMVETS Post 48 to celebrate AMVETS Day and the opening of AMVETS’s new facility located at 660 Hawkins Avenue in Ronkonkoma.

AMVETS was formed in December 1944, under the name “American Veterans of World War II” and former President Harry S. Truman signed the AMVETS Congressional Charter in 1947. Since its inception the charter has been amended to broaden membership to all American veterans.

AMVETS’s mission is to support “veterans and active military, providing community services and preserving freedom.”

AMVETS national service officers provide free claim assistance to veterans, their dependents and survivors, donates

time to visit hospitalized veterans as well as promote programs such as the Special Olympics and scouting. AMVETS has also helped fund the renovation of the USS Arizona Memorial and the Statue of Liberty. Each year AMVETS awards scholarships that sum to a total of $40,000 to high school seniors, ROTC students, and veterans pursuing higher education.

Issues of great significance to AMVETS include veteran’s health care and related entitlements, POW/MIA accountability, national defense and flag protection.

AMVETS Post 48 was founded in January 1998 and has since been engaged in many community services.

Among the numerous community service activities Post 48 has been involved with are Toys for Tots, Jacobs Ladder, Thanksgiving Open

House, and the annual Memorial Day Parade.

Boat Slips Still Available The Islip Town Department of Parks and Recreation has announced that a limited number of boat slips are still available at Town marinas, generally for smaller watercraft.

The remaining spaces are reserved for boats that do not exceed 21 feet in length. The available slips are mostly concentrated in East Islip Marina, Bay Shore Marina, and Port O’Call in Sayville, but

availability is scattered throughout the Town’s other facilities.

“Boat slips at Islip Town marinas provide access to some of the more historically beautiful waters in the northeast because of their access to the Great South Bay and Fire Island, and many residents assume that all of our slips are claimed,” said Supervisor Tom Croci.

“There are a lot of ways to

enjoy our waterways during the summer months, and using a boat slip at our marinas can lead to some unforgettable moments out on the water.”

Cars can be dropped off to the valet attendant at the south side of the Roe Walkway (between the Patchogue Medford Library and Stanley’s Furniture) in Parking Lot #5, on Terry Street beginning at 4 p.m. and ending at 2 a.m. The charge for the valet service is $5, but participating downtown restaurants and merchants will offer patrons with valet tickets discounts and free items to compensate for the cost.
