Walking Down Memory Lane

n Thursday, June 23rd, the Class of 2016 took a walk down memory lane to inspire younger students to dream big and work hard for a great future.

Longwood School District seniors visited their own elementary schools as part of an event called Senior Walk. Graduating students marched down the same halls, where they once studied, to help motivate the younger students to achieve. This is the first year the district has hosted the event.

Sunshine of My Life By: Jamie Lynn Ryan

We can all use a little sunshine in our lives. No matter how happy we may be, there is always room for more.

It is a life source, a beacon of positivity, light, warmth – all features whose benefits have the ability to make daily life that much more fulfilling.

Sure, not everyone is a “summer” person. But I don’t know of too many who fail to embrace the positive qualities a little daylight provides.

Come winter, spring, summer or autumn, the sun shines on, allowing all those who wish to bask in its glow.

Don’t get me wrong. I love a good thunderstorm just as much as the next person.

There is something about inclement weather which

affords the easy excuse to be just a bit more unproductive than when the sun is shining brightly. One doesn’t feel so guilty sleeping a little later, pushing aside some of those errands, saving that running around for another day.

To everything, and everyone, there is a season.

Luckily for us, we have four distinct ones to enjoy – or count the days down until they pass – whichever method you prefer. For me, I say it is always better to appreciate that time rather than wish it away.

Six months ago, we were checking off the days until summer vacation and beach weather and all the rest that comes with extended hours of sunshine was to arrive. And six months from now, we shall

be doing the same. Such is the circle of life.

Personally, I make it my mission to witness as many sunsets as possible and – though it pains me to “rise and shine” quite that early – even my fair share of sunrises.

There is something quite magical about the dawning of a new day; same with the golden glow which overtakes the landscape as the sun prepares to dip below the horizon.

So go outside, take a walk, absorb your surroundings.

Take it all in. Allow the warmth of the sun to touch your soul.

It’s the most natural form of healing we have, and it’s there for the taking. Embrace it.

Kindergarten Graduation The Connetquot Central School District’s Cherokee Street Elementary recently hosted its kindergarten graduation ceremony.

Students and teachers welcomed family and friends to look on as their children sang musical selections and celebrated the successful conclusion of their kindergarten

experience.

The graduating kindergartners performed several songs in their ‘Kindergarten Rocks’ t-shirts. Cherokee Street Elementary School principal Mr. James T. Williams was pleased with the ceremony’s turnout and enthusiastic reaction to the performance. After

the ceremony, family members were led into the school’s atrium for refreshments and pictures.

The event celebrated the students’ completion of the kindergarten curriculum and provided a chance to look forward to future success in the elementary school.

New Citizens Honored Legislator Tom Muratore attended a ceremony at the Middle Country Public Library in Centereach on July 23rd, honoring five people who have recently become United States citizens. The Legislator presented Certificates of Recognition to commemorate the event.

Two of the many programs offered at this library are the ESOL

(English for Speakers of Other Languages) classes, and the Citizenship Preparation Course. The purpose of the latter is to teach adult students about American history and culture, and civic lessons about the rights and responsibilities of citizenship. Both groups were recognized at the ceremony.

the library’s Director stated, “We were very honored that Legislature Muratore was able to join us in celebrating the library’s Literacy Center and in recognition of the students who worked diligently to become United State citizens.

We are grateful for his continuous support of the library and the Middle Country community.”

Walking the Halls

The seniors, who donned their caps and gowns, gave out high-fives as the younger students waved and cheered them on.

“It was really cool to see kids that were in my teacher’s second grade class,” said second grade student Olivia Hollingsworth. “They are all grown-ups now.”

While the elementary students were motivated by their older counterparts,

On June 23rd, over 600 job seekers attended the fifth annual JobHaven. org Job Fair held at Brookhaven Town Hall.

The free event, which was sponsored by the Division of Economic Development and the Brookhaven Business Advisory Council (BBAC), provided

attendees the opportunity to meet face-to-face with representatives from more than 100 companies located in and around Brookhaven who are looking to hire qualified candidates for a wide range of positions.

participated in the JobHaven.org Job Fair included Aflac, Amneal Pharmaceuticals, DiCarlo Distributors, New York Life Insurance, Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center, People’s United Bank, Suffolk Transportation Service and more.

Senior Kaila Folk felt nostalgic and choked back tears as she reflected on walking the same halls as a kindergarten student.

“It feels like yesterday that I started out here at Ridge Elementary and now I’m graduating,” said Kaila. “My advice to the elementary kids is not to wish time away; it just goes way too fast.”

The Connetquot School District’s Cherokee Street Elementary recently celebrated Flag Day during an event featuring active-duty and retired United States military veterans and more than 700 students in grades kindergarten through fifth.

To commemorate the event, students wore

patriotic colors while reciting the pledge of allegiance, singing songs and playing the recorder.

In addition, the school’s orchestra and chorus each gave performances.

In addition, Captain Bryan Hoffman, a Ronkonkoma resident and an active-duty soldier in the National Guard,

joined the celebration and raised the flag to begin the festivities. Hoffman also presented Principal James T. Williams with a flag flown at his military base in Cuba.

The event was intended to celebrate patriotism and teach students the history of the American flag.

The Connetquot Central School District’s Edith L. Slocum Elementary School recently welcomed first responders from throughout the Connetquot community to participate in its annual spirited and patriotic Flag Day celebration. In honor of the event, students and

faculty all wore red, white and blue attire.

During the celebration, the school’s chorus and band performed patriotic songs and Mrs. Salters, who is both a police officer and parent of Slocum Elementary School student, sang the star spangled banner.

In addition, Mrs. Riegger, a kindergarten teacher from the district who is retiring after working in the Connetquot School District for 30 years, was the honorary flag raiser.

The purpose of this event was to teach students the history of the American flag and celebrate patriotism.

Lesson on Albinism

Connetquot School District’s Edith L. Slocum Elementary School students, teachers and Principal John Delio recently learned all about Albinism from a fellow classmate in honor of International Albinism Awareness Day. As part of the event, Daniel Avila, a brave

fourth-grade student who has albinism, and his teacher, Mrs. Pinelli, led a presentation to raise awareness. Daniel talked about albinism and the effect it has had on his life. He also answered questions about what causes albinism, the resources he uses for help and the dangers of not

wearing sunscreen and spending too much time in the sun.

International Albinism Awareness Day was established in 2013 and is celebrated every June 13th.

The day is a method of bringing attention to this genetic disorder with little awareness.

Move It, Move It The Connetquot School District’s Helen B. Duffield Elementary School recently organized an opportunity for dance and sing with representatives from the CM Performing Arts Center, while learning

about the importance of making healthy choices.

Through use of songs and different exercises, including an interactive dance story called I like to Move It, Move It, the guestperformers were able to get

the children on their feet and encourage them to make healthy decisions.

The event was intended to stress the importance of a healthy lifestyle and the choices needed to achieve one.

Recognizing Achievements The Connetquot School District Board of Education recently awarded several students and teachers from throughout the District for their achievements this past school year. The awards were presented at a ceremony held at the final Board of Education meeting of the 2015-2016 school year at Connetquot High School’s Eric Martinsen Performing Arts Center.

C o n n e t q u o t superintendent Dr. Lynda G. Adams and board president Milynn Augulis presented the honorees with certificates on behalf of the trustees and community. Those recognized for their accomplishments included students who won the 2016 Walt Whitman Poetry Contest, the Connetquot High School Girls’ Track & Field Team for exemplary

athletic performance and staff members who have recently been granted tenure.

The purpose of the event was to recognize multiple individuals within the Connetquot Central School District for their accomplishments over the past school year and to encourage students and teachers to continue striving for greatness.

Connetquot Commencement The Connetquot School District’s Connetquot High School recently hosted the commencement ceremony for the class of 2016 on the campus’ football field. The graduating senior class, consisting of 517 students, received their diplomas in front of a packed crowd of family, friends and community members. This was the 52nd graduating class from Connetquot High School.

New York State Senator Thomas D. Croci, a 1990

Connetquot High School graduate, was the keynote speaker at the ceremony.

United States Senator Chuck Schumer also addressed the audience and shared his well wishes.

Principal Mr. Kenneth J. Costa, Jr., Board of Education president Mrs. Milynn Augulis and superintendent Lynda G. Adams made introductory remarks and congratulations. Also during the ceremony, Salutatorian Dylan

Finazzo, Valedictorian Jamie Mazza and senior class president Cerra Ebbecke all gave speeches focusing on their experiences at Connetquot High School and the challenges and rewards that await each graduate.

The ceremony provided an opportunity for the District to congratulate the students on their educational journey and encourage them to strive for greatness in their future endeavors.

Earning Recognition The Connetquot School District’s Ronkonkoma Middle School recently received recognition from the Sons of Italy Commission of Social Justice of Suffolk County for exceptional essays submitted to the 2016

On Monday, June 20th, Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker honored the recipients of the 2016 North Brookhaven Chamber of Commerce scholarship awards at The Meadow Club in Port Jefferson Station. The Chamber of Commerce strives to strengthen and

improve the welfare of its members as well as the entire community, and was happy to award the scholarships to high achieving and dedicated students.

The students who were awarded scholarships include Lauren Short from Comsewogue, Alexis Duffy

from Rocky Point, Ashley Reynolds from Miller Place, Patrick Biemer from Shoreham Wading River, and Leon Paul from Mount Sinai.
