Over half of small businesses experienced a cyberattack last year So we’re providing the advanced tools and trainings to defend them

Small businesses with limited time and resources are increasingly targets of cyberattacks. The Google tools business owners use every day are secure by default, like Gmail, which blocks 99.9% of phishing attacks automatically.

In addition, Google’s Cybersecurity Workshop for Small Businesses equips small business owners with the digital skills and resources they need to protect what they’ve worked so hard to build.

For the second consecutive year, Suffolk County Legislator Leslie Kennedy sponsored the award ceremony for the Jacob’s Light Beacon of Hope Award. This year’s event was held at the American Airpower Museum in Farmingdale on June 20.

The Jacob’s Light Beacon of Hope Award honors Policemen, Firemen, EMS, Veterans and Active Military whose contributions to society help make Long Island such a wonderful place to live. The ceremony

Suffolk County Heroes Breakfast

and breakfast were also sponsored by The Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation, Catholic Health Services of Long Island, and Bristal Assisted Living of Long Island.

The award is named after SPC. Jacob Fletcher, who unfortunately lost his life in Northern Iraq while serving his country. He was a beacon of light for his fellow soldiers, always offering to go above and beyond.

This year’s ceremony saw two Jacob’s Light awards granted: one to Suffolk County Sheriff

Errol Toulon, the other posthumously to Stephen Siller, an off-duty FDNY Firefighter who died on 9/11. Siller’s family and battalion formed the Tunnel to Towers Foundation in his memory, which has made tremendous strides in supporting first responders, veterans, and their families. Suffolk County Sheriff Errol Toulon has made considerable strides in law enforcement in Suffolk County, working to decrease recidivism and leverage existing resources to better share

intelligence from Suffolk’s jails domestically and internationally.

“Frank [Siller] wanted to do good and take up the mantle of his brother,” said Hubert Johnson, who vets potential recipients on the work that Frank Siller has done in his brother’s name,” without worrying about time and effort.”

In reference to Errol Toulon, Johnson reflected that “I watched him throughout the years with the great works he’s done within the Sheriff’s department.”

Last year’s “Pandemic

Heroes Breakfast” saw the Jacob’s Light Award posthumously given to FDNY Paramedic Alison Russo, who was tragically killed mere weeks from retirement. The award was accepted by her daughter, with members of the Huntington First Aid Squad and the FDNY in attendance.

The event saw massive community involvement, with members of various veterans’ groups, police and fire departments, as well as elected officials in attendance.

“They (first responders

and veterans) go without seeing their families on the holidays and without uninterrupted time with their families,” emphasizing the importance of Suffolk County’s Heroes. “The consequence for many of us making a mistake is a matter of minutes to correct said mistake, but for the great multitude of first responders and military personnel, the consequence of a mistake is often life or death.”

NOTICE OF INTENT TO COMMENCE CONSTRUCTION

New York State Public Service Commission (PSC) Case 20-T-0617

On November 17, 2022, the PSC issued a Certificate of Environmental Compatibility and Public Need (CECPN) to Sunrise Wind LLC (SRW) to construct and operate the Sunrise Wind Cable Project (the Project), which is a 5.2-mile 320 kV DC submarine export cable from the New York State territorial waters boundary to the Smith Point County Park on Fire Island in the Town of Brookhaven (the Town), 17.5-miles of 320 kV DC onshore, underground transmission cable to a new Onshore Converter Station (the OnCS) in the Town, and 1.1 miles of 138 kV AC interconnection cable that will allow interconnection with the existing electric grid. The Project will transmit electricity produced by the Sunrise Wind Farm, to be located in federal waters approximately 30 miles off the east coast of Long Island, to the Holbrook Substation in the Town.

SRW’s Phase 1 Environmental Management and Construction Plan (Phase 1 EM&CP) was filed with the PSC on November 18, 2022 and is ripe for PSC review at its upcoming June session. The Phase 1 EM&CP details several categories of Project construction, including civil work at the Project’s Onshore Converter Station (OnCS), located at 608 Union Ave., Holtsville, NY and the preparation and use of two laydown yards, located at 580 Union Ave., Holtsville, NY and 60 Zorn Blvd., Yaphank, NY, all of which are located in the Town (together, the Phase 1A work). SRW will commence construction of the Phase 1A work prior to the remainder of Phase 1 activities. The Phase 1 EM&CP details the Project design relevant to this phase of construction and provides both typical and sitespecific techniques, procedures, and requirements to be followed in the construction of this phase of the Project by SRW to ensure environmental protection and maintain public health and safety.

Construction of Phase 1A work (i.e., the OnCS and laydown yards described above) is anticipated to commence on or after July 10, 2023.

An electronic version of the Phase 1 EM&CP and the entire administrative record supporting the issuance of the CECPN is available for public inspection online on the PSC’s Document and Matter Management page for this case at the following location: https://documents.dps.ny.gov/ public/MatterManagement/CaseMaster.aspx?MatterCaseNo=20-T0617&CaseSearch=Search. Those same materials can also be found by visiting the PSC’s website (http://www.dps.ny.gov), clicking on the “Search” tab, and entering “20-T-6017” in the “Search by Case Number” box.

Moreover, the Phase 1 EM&CP is also available for public inspection during normal business hours at the following public libraries: Brookhaven Free Library, the Mastics-Moriches-Shirley Library, and the Sachem Public Library.

Further information about the Project may be obtained by visiting the Project website at www.sunrisewindny.com.

Additional information may be obtained and concerns regarding construction of the Project may also be made by emailing info@ sunrisewindny.com, calling SRW’s External Affairs Coordinator at 631629-8410, or writing SRW at 7 Wells Avenue, Suite 27, Newton, MA 02459. Inquiries and/or concerns may also be submitted online at www. sunrisewindny.com/contact.

The Project is under the jurisdiction of the PSC, which is responsible for enforcing compliance with the CECPN and Phase 1 EM&CP. The PSC may be contacted at:

Service-Learning Project Raises Money For Local Animal Shelter

Jen De Carlo and Robyn Grieco’s fifth grade class at Nokomis Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District recently completed a service project to benefit Last Chance Animal Rescue, a local charitable and nonprofit organization created to save the lives of animals.

After a visit from some volunteers from the rescue

to learn more about what the organization does, the students ran a pop-up lunch shop where they sold bracelets, keychains and straws. In addition, the class partnered with Philly Pretzel Factory of Ronkonkoma to sell customized pretzels that were in the shape of paws and dog bones.

In order to promote dogs in need of forever

homes on social media for the rescue, each student created a “Pupstagram” profile which highlighted the dog’s personality and reasons why they should be adopted.

The project generated a total of $1,800 donated to Last Chance Animal Rescue, who will utilize the funds to save the lives of dogs and cats in need.

A New Book Club For Those Affected By Breast Cancer

The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Program is starting a lifeaffirming book club called the Warriors Book Club that is open to anyone affected by breast cancer. The group will zoom on Monday, July 10, from 7 pm to 8 pm.

The first book to be read is “The Getaway Girls” by Dee MacDonald, a funny romantic comedy about love, friends, family and self-discovery. Three very different women all agree

it’s about time they had a holiday to remember… and they do as they set forth in Europe in a used recreational vehicle.

The Warriors Book Club is the brainchild of Adelphi Hotline Volunteer Lynne Borah from Plainview. Borah, a 20-year breast cancer survivor, says “Reading is my favorite getaway,” which is why she decided to start the book club to help others escape from any difficulties they are having.

For information and to register for this free event, contact Nina Foley at 516877-4315 or email her at nfoley@adelphi.edu.

Adelphi New York Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline and Support Program offers emotional support and information to people with and/or concerned about breast cancer. To reach the Hotline, which is staffed by volunteers who are breast cancer survivors, call 800877-8077.

For the first time ever, six different extra-curricular clubs, comprising over 100 students in Selden Middle School, worked together to collect 536 non-perishable food items and 328 toiletry items for the Long Island

864 Items To The Long Island Coalition For The Homeless

Coalition for the Homeless (LICH) recently.

“It is such a privilege to witness our students and teachers come together to give back to our community and make a difference,” said Andrew Bennett, Principal

of Selden Middle School.

“Our school is a shining example of leaders and doers that want to make a positive impact. Thank you to our students, families, faculty, and staff for all the donations and help to collect and count

the items.”

Selden alumnus, Rachel Cortes, a current Stony Brook student, spearheaded the donation drive in conjunction with her organization at Stony Brook University. To kick off the

week-long collection drive, Rachel and two of her peers spoke to numerous club members and their advisors about the homeless issue on Long Island. Currently, there are over 3,800 documented homeless people across

Nassau and Suffolk counties, 1,200 of which are children. The collection drive was such a tremendous success that the advisors are planning to make this an annual springtime event.
