This past Monday, Legislator Leslie Kennedy along with Kevin LaValle and Mayor Robert Scottaline, hosted a blood drive at the Lake Grove Recreation Center in Lake Grove.

Gabriella returned to her hometown elementary school to install the unique garden.

“I went to Ridge Elementary School and I knew there was a need for this type of area,” said

Gabrielle. “I wanted to provide a space for all students to enjoy.”

The sensory garden features include a counting frame, wind chimes, a water feature, tic tac toe board, a bird bath for observations of wildlife, seating, and a stepping stone pathway with colorful artwork designed by students.

GREAT BROOKHAVEN CLEANUP - Selden Middle School’s Student Activities group recently participated in this year’s Great Brookhaven Clean Up. The seventh graders chose Gary Adler Park in Centereach – located on the same street as the school and named after a former student of Selden Middle School who passed away.

The students were fortunate to have Gary Adler’s dad participate in the clean-up day and he expressed how proud he was of all the individuals involved.

Connetquot High School held its graduation commencement ceremony on June 22nd, as hundreds of family, friends and distinguished guests joined the seniors in commemorating their final day as students of the Connetquot Central School District.

After being introduced by the Connetquot High School Band, a display of colors from the Bohemia Fire Department Color Guard and a lovely rendition of “The StarSpangled Banner” by the Connetquot High School Senior Chorus, Principal Kenneth J. Costa welcomed the attendees and thanked them for their overwhelming support of the graduating class and wished the students well

Class of 2017 salutatorian Anthony Mannino delivered a heartwarming speech, stating, “What I see before me is a group of individuals who possess a blank slate in the real world - they can be whatever they want to be, and they can achieve whatever they want to achieve.”

A d d i t i o n a l l y, valedictorian Mit Patel reflected on the class’s collective high school experience.

“Do not forget that the majority

of learning doesn’t come from classrooms. While we learn formulas, theorems and other definitions, what’s perhaps most important is what we learn from each other, from our teachers and from our environment.”

After thoughtful speeches regarding the students’ achievements and hopes for their continued success in the future from New York State Senator and Connetquot alumnus Thomas Croci, Connetquot High School Class President Anthony Melfi and board trustee Milynn Augulis, the students walked across the stage and received their diploma, signifying the start of a new life journey.

From children’s programs to concerts and lively discussions to literary wonder, the library offers entertainment, enlightenment and excitement.

On June 27th, the library hosted its first ever, Virtual Reality Open House. Virtual reality is the creation of a virtual environment presented to our senses in such a way that we experience

it as if we were really there.

With the expertise of librarians Janet Kowal and Jesse Reinard, patrons were able to try out Virtual Reality hardware. From an underwater sea quest to exotic travel, from entertaining games to daring adventures, patrons experienced all this and more.

The open house provided the opportunity to experiment with this new and innovative technology, all while having fun. For the young and young at heart, this novel encounter offered a glimpse of the future, the chance to “see the world” and challenge our senses.

The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD), Long Island’s premier provider of substance abuse services and prevention programs is pleased to announce that Mr. Nelson Monica, a mentor in the LICADD BUDDY (Building Unique, Dynamic & Diverse Youth) has received Mentor of the Year from Mentor New York. Mentor New York, an affiliate of the National Mentoring Partnership, fuels quality mentoring relationships that match a caring adult with children in need through safe, effective mentoring programs throughout New York State.

A special dinner, Mentoring Night Out, was held on June 22nd at the Bowery Hotel in New York City. Both Mr. Monica and his mentee, Miguel G. were in attendance. Celebrating

with them were BUDDY Program Coordinator, Lauren Laurore, LCSW and LICADD Board Chairman Michael Brennan and his wife, Donna. The BUDDY program matches children who have an incarcerated parent (or close relative) with an adult trained volunteer.

The mentor meets with their mentee on a regular basis to provide guidance and support with the goal of building a trusting relationship. The BUDDY program has been in existed for seven years and is supported by fundraising efforts and grant foundations, Bank of America and The Richard and Mary Morrison Foundation.

For 61 years, LICADD is Long Island’s premier nonprofit agency providing life-saving alcohol and drug prevention and intervention services

to at-risk children, individuals, and families across the region. Polo Championship The United States Polo Association (USPA) has announced that the U.S. Open Arena Polo Championship will take place July 11th–22nd at the Country Farms Polo Club in Medford, New York.

The 12-20-goal tournament serves as one of the highest levels of arena polo competition currently played in the United States.

The tournament has a rich history dating back to 1926. In its inaugural year, it was won by the Yale University team made up of Reddington Barret, Winston Guest and William Muir. However, their champion status was quickly overtaken by Brooklyn Riding & Driving Club the following three years (1927-1929).

Over the past 35 years, the tournament has been played alternately on the East Coast and West Coast at venues such as Shallowbrook Polo Club (New York), the Los Angeles Equestrian Center (California), Empire Polo Club (California),

Great Meadow Polo Club (Virginia), West Hills Polo Club (New York), California Polo Club (California), and most recently for the last five years, Country Farms Polo Club.

In contemporary U.S. Open Arena polo competition, Cedar Croft Farms has garnered the prestigious title from 2013-2015, a significant feat, as only the second team in the history of the tournament to achieve three consecutive wins with the same team members. The young team consisted of Kris Kampsen, Team USPA member* Felipe Viana and Robert Ceparano. Last year NYC Polo including arena veteran Matias Magrini, Team USPA member Jared Sheldon* and Samuel Ramirez Jr. narrowly defeated Cedar Croft Farms in the final 17-15.

“The USPA looks forward to this year’s tournament and hosting several teams that will represent the sport of polo to a wide audience on the USPA Polo Network,” said Duncan

Huyler, USPA CEO. “We thank Country Farms for their hospitality and efforts to host this historical tournament.”

Polo fans are encouraged to attend this year’s games and cheer for their favorite team. Seven or more matches will take place regularly during the 11 days of the tournament.

Sign Unveiled

On Saturday, June 17th, Suffolk County Legislator Tom Muratore, joined by other local elected officials and community and family members attended a dual event focusing on veterans.

The Santora-Bonacasa VFW Post 400 in Farmingville held their Grand Re-Opening Ceremony, immediately followed by the unveiling of a very special sign. A section of Portion Road in Farmingville was renamed “Army Ranger Sgt. Jason Santora Avenue,” in memory of a local hero who gave his life serving our country in Afghanistan.

The renamed section stretches approximately two miles on Portion Road, from Leeds Boulevard to Blue Point Road.

Jason A. Santora of Farmingville was 25 at the time of his passing, and graduated from Sachem North High School in Lake Ronkonkoma. He enlisted in the United States Army in March 2006. Sgt. Santora was assigned to the Army’s 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment based out of Fort Benning, Georgia.

He died on April 23rd, 2010, in Logar Province, Afghanistan, of wounds sustained while supporting

Operation Enduring Freedom and conducting combat operations.

Sgt. Santora was posthumously awarded the Silver Star, Purple Heart, Bronze Star, and Meritorious Service Medal.

Additionally, VFW Post 400 in Farmingville was renamed a year ago as the Sgt. Jason Santora-Sgt. Louis Bonacasa Memorial Post 400 in honor of Sgt. Santora and Air National Guard Staff Sgt. Louis Bonacasa, two local heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

COFFEE WITH A COP - On June 22nd, Councilman Kevin LaValle was joined by Suffolk County Legislator Tom Muratore and officers from the Suffolk County Police Department (SCPD) for a “Coffee with a Cop” event at Selden Bagels Your Way. “Coffee with A Cop” was launched in Hawthorne, California in 2011 when members of the Hawthorne Police Department were looking for ways to interact more successfully with the citizens they served each day. The key to “Coffee with a Cop’s” growing success is that it opens the door for interactions outside of the crisis situations that typically bring law enforcement officers and community members together.

Welding Teacher Taylor Terhaar ordered the material and administered the test to her interested students after practicing in class, and submitted the finished product to MT Group, the certifying organization based in Farmingdale. They then gave the welded material a strict qualifications test.

“This is the first time anyone in all of Eastern Suffolk BOCES has earned this certification as a student,” said Terhaar.

“This was a huge goal of mine. When I graduated, these certifications were my entry way into every job. My students can pass tests and here is the proof.”

Next year Terhaar plans

to have even more students pass the 3G and 4G certifications and prepare students to take the Pipe Weld / 6G certification exam. This is the most difficult certification to obtain and is considered the gold standard in the industry.

Additionally, two of these students were each awarded checks for $600 from the recently established Robert Vetter Memorial Fund to purchase equipment at AWISCO, a welding supply company.

These items and materials will assist them during the launch of their new careers. Welding Teacher Taylor Terhaar and School Nurse Alicia Anderson helped raised the money and AWISCO matched their contributions. The memorial fund honors the late Robert Vetter, Terhaar’s welding teacher and mentor.

SUBSTANCE ABUSE WORKSHOP - The Town of Brookhaven’s Youth Bureau held two well attended Substance Abuse Education Workshops for parents this month.

The workshops were conducted in both Spanish and English and are called “The More You Know.” The first workshop was held on June 6th at Brookhaven Town Hall and the second workshop was held on June 19th at the Patchogue-Medford Library in Patchogue. Topics included adolescent behavior and development, why they may choose to use drugs, what drugs adolescents are using and how to talk to them about drugs. This program is made possible by a grant through the New York State Division of Criminal Justice.

Of Summer Memories and Staycations Summer is upon us, officially, and for some that means making a getaway to tropical islands, upstate resorts or seaside chalets; essentially, anywhere but here. For me, I look at this season of warmth and sunshine as a perfect opportunity to enjoy all that Long Island has to offer.

Home sweet home, indeed.

Our little neck of the woods certainly has no shortage of pristine beaches, whether you prefer the smooth sand and surf of the south shore, or the seashell-encrusted terrain of the north shore. From the North Fork wineries, to the South Fork shopping hamlets, there is literally something for everyone to enjoy.

Personally, I have always been a big fan of the “staycation.”

Throw in a day trip to Manhattan or any of the boroughs, and you can literally travel from coast to coast over a four-day weekend and never run out of sights to see. No matter how many times I’ve visited the Fire

Island Lighthouse, the Montauk Lighthouse or any number of tourist attractions in New York City, I always find a new angle to appreciate, a slightly different perspective to photograph.

Of course, with a holiday such as the 4th of July, it’s always nice to view a few fireworks. With rare exception, this has generally meant sitting out on the deck in hopes that the neighbors had managed to obtain some sparkly explosives, or, if it wasn’t too crowded, taking a ride down to the local town beach to view the show from across the Bay. One year, a friend and I were inspired to check out the annual show at Eisenhower Park. After realizing that we should have probably allowed more time, resorting to parking on the side of Hempstead Turnpike and then wandering aimlessly around the park after having somehow missed the main entrance - we arrived. Or so we thought.

the fireworks show. Talk about a front row seat. After hurriedly realizing this was not, in fact, the viewing area, we wound up walking/running what seemed like miles, following the distant sounds of explosions, until we came upon the rest of the crowd, who had most likely gotten there hours before. As we set up our blanket and settled down to watch what remained of the show, there was one final burst of color in the sky. And then… silence. The end.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, was the first and last “real” fireworks show I have ever attended. A priceless memory nonetheless, one that is fondly reflected upon whenever the holiday nears.

Here’s hoping everyone has a safe summer and enjoys whatever adventures it may bring. Just remember, you need not travel far to see beautiful sights… and make beautiful - if not brief - memories.

Four students from the Islip Career Center Welding Program recently earned advanced industry certifications.

These qualifications make these students extremely attractive to potential employers and unions as their skills are that much more marketable.

Islip Career Center is an Eastern Suffolk BOCES school that provides special career education services to students with special needs.

Each student attained a 3G welding certification and one of the four also achieved a 4G certification. The 3G and 4G certifications mean the bearer is certified in vertical and overhead welding, respectively, two difficult positions in which to weld because the metal is not directly in front of you. Pipe joints are going to be at eye level or higher,

ALS Fundraiser Staff, students and community members of Connetquot Central School District’s Ronkonkoma Middle School recently came together for two fundraising events to benefit individuals diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

The Ronkonkoma Middle School Honor Society hosted an ALS-Awareness car wash with support from classmates, faculty and local residents.

Proceeds from this event were donated to Ride for Life, an organization started by Chris Pendergast, a retired teacher living with ALS for more than 24 years.

“This organization has been a tremendous supporter of the cause over the years and has raised over $7 million,” explained Ronkonkoma Middle School Principal Charles Morea.

“Their most recent effort involved participants – including Mr. Pendergast – completing a trip in their wheelchairs from Yankee Stadium to Washington, D.C. in order to raise ALS awareness and funding.”

Additionally, RMS students and staff participated in a “Ramp Shot” tournament in the school gymnasium, which raised $1,900 toward ALS research and included a

generous $500 donation from Mittan Chathan and Ankita Chathan, owners of a local 7-Eleven store.

Thanks to the efforts of Ronkonkoma Middle School physical education teacher Justin Hertz and other staff members, 82 students participated in the event. The winners received a “Ramp Shot” game to take home for themselves as well as gift cards to Applebees, which were donated by school guidance counselor Christine Valente and the RMS Honor Society. The winners will also have their names placed on a trophy created by technology teacher Nate Giagios.

IMPORTANT INITIATIVES - The Connetquot Foundation for the Advancement of Children recently hosted its first CFAC Showcase in the atrium of Edward J. Bosti Elementary School, inviting district staff, personnel and administration to learn more about the grants which have been approved in an effort to further the students’ educational and extracurricular experiences. The Connetquot Foundation for the Advancement of Children recently hosted its first CFAC Showcase in the atrium of Edward J. Bosti Elementary School, inviting district staff, personnel and administration to learn more about the grants that have been approved in an effort to further the students’ educational and extracurricular experiences.

Throughout the course of the afternoon,

presentations were set up around the perimeter of the room and attendees were encouraged to interact with each grant recipient’s representative to learn more about their individual effort.

Several grants could be viewed throughout the room including the Recycling Rangers project which was brought to Helen B. Duffield Elementary School in an effort to get students thinking in an eco-friendly fashion; Stand Up Desks at Edith

L. Slocum Elementary School to promote healthy activity in the classroom and an elementary-level foreign language night to introduce young students to the many opportunities and languages the world has to offer.
