RALLIED TOGETHER FOR FUNDRAISER - The Connetquot Central School District community recently rallied together in an effort to benefit both the Friscia and Battista families, who were unfortunately hit with tragedy this school year. Hosted at Bella Bambina’s Pizzeria in Oakdale, dozens of community members attended the event, as they were able to take part in a Chinese Auction and raffle with proceeds being directly donated toward the families. The Charity of the Month for June is: New Ground www.newground.org

New Ground is a non-profit organization that helps break the cycle of homelessness right here in Nassau and Suffolk counties by dealing with it’s underlying causes, rather than merely treating symptoms. New Ground empowers children, parents and Veterans to achieve their goals so that they can secure a brighter future for generations to come!

This organization provides a portfolio of programming delivered by professionals, so that a set of services is customized in a unique way for each Veteran and family they serve. This way they can solve all of the underlying causes of their situation at the same time. They truly believe that this is how you break the cycle of homelessness!

Since opening their doors in 1991, New Ground has seen over 80% of the families they have served “graduate” from their programs self sufficient and in permanent stable housing.

This week I would like to share yet another success story. Please note: The name of the individual mentioned in this story has been changed for confidentiality purposes.

A Long Island resident, Tina, found New Ground when she was facing eviction from her apartment and had nowhere to go with her two young sons. She had fallen behind on rent because of a significant decrease in her paycheck and she did not have the means to pay off this debt or to afford a new apartment. She moved into the Long Term Housing Program with New Ground, where she paid an affordable rent based on her income and began to receive all the intensive social work and education services necessary to help her turn things around.

While in the program, Tina paid off significant debts on her credit report, increased her score by over 200 points, created a savings and secured better paying stable employment.

However, her real focus was education. She agreed with New Ground that the way out of her cycle of poverty was a higher degree to ensure greater

income. Tina juggled work, school and raising two boys along with many other life responsibilities during her years with New Ground.

She attended an Associate Degree program part time and finished in three years.

She then immediately started a Bachelor Degree program, which she completed in three years.

Following each accomplishment, she secured better paying employment and used her extra earnings to reach her financial goals.

Upon completing the New Ground program and moving into a market rent apartment, she continued her education plan. This May she graduated with her Master Degree in Social Work and this summer she will become a homeowner!

Tina stated, “I feel awesome, I feel accomplished. It has been a long journey. I’m just happy and overwhelmed. I love working with people and there is a big need for people to care for other people now. It’s what New Ground did for me, helping me to get where I am. Now it’s my turn to help someone else.”

As you can see, New Ground is a huge help to the homeless community on Long Island and is there for those in need. They are currently in need of volunteers to help out in various areas of their organization. If you have a background in Education and wish to help tutor individuals out of their Levittown Main Office, the opportunity is available. You can also get involved with one of their Event Committees to help coordinate one of their upcoming special events, or with their Program Committee, which meets quarterly to review overall programs and services.

Shedding Light On An Important Lesson Kings and queens filled the cafetorium at Wenonah Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District for a magical celebration of literacy and learning as part of the building’s monthlong Pick a Reading Partner initiative.

As the PARP assembly began, the magical kingdom on Wenonah was under siege by a ferocious dragon. At the beginning of the month, students learned that if they read books it would protect Wenonah from the dragon. With each book the students read, a brick was added to their kingdom. The bricks were represented by old cereal boxes that now showcased information about the books the students read.

As the theatrical assembly continued, building administrators and staff acted out the enchanting fairy tale dressed in vibrant costumes.

“It is wonderful and yet not surprising that Tanger Outlets awarded Mr. Brennan this grant; his

love for teaching, paired with his knowledge of engineering and computer science is evident through all his work in and out of the classroom,” said Connetquot Central School District Elementary STEM Chairperson Bethanie Rizzo. “Mr. Brennan is part of an amazing team of computer science specialists who provide these innovative learning experiences to students grades K-5.”

A REAL-LIFE LITERARY CONNECTION - Fourth and fifth grade students from Connetquot Central School District’s Helen B. Duffield Elementary School recently engaged in a Skype session with the author of the “I Survived” series, Lauren Tarshis. Students from both Karen Pitka’s and Stephanie Russo’s classes enthusiastically led a question and answer session with the author after several students wrote letters to her, citing her as their favorite author. Along the way, students learned about different art

techniques, mediums and the many categories of art.

The vibrant display was attended by fellow classmates, teachers, members of administration, members of the board of education, family and friends who were led throughout the art exhibit by the talented artists.

A CELEBRATION OF CERAMICS - Connetquot High School students enrolled in Vincent Osmer’s Sculpting and Ceramics classes recently took a field trip to Long Island University, CW Post Campus to engage in the traditional Japanese style of ceramics known as “Raku.” During their visit, the 18 students were busy participating in the Raku process, which included glazing their pieces, loading the kilns, prepping the fire pit and cleaning their work afterward. A flurry of facts filled the air at Merrimac Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District as fourth grade students learned about the aquifer system, precipitation and how Long Island is supplied with safe, clean water during an educational assembly program led by a representative from

the Suffolk County Water Authority.

During the assembly, students learned several interesting facts about the Earth’s composition, states of water and the processes which occur for water to be used in homes across Suffolk County.

Additionally, students learned about the

three layers of the aquifer system and how harmful pollutants can leach into our drinking water as they observed a groundwater simulator which mirrored this process.

The engaging educational assembly program served as a timely addition to the fourth grade study of the water cycle.

Students ‘Launch’ Into Engineering through the air and onto a designated area, located a few feet away from the launch site. The students were supplied with a handful of quarters, which could be used in an effort to “purchase” materials which would assist with creating their catapults.

The materials at their disposal included paper clips, rubber bands and spoons, which could all be utilized to assist in creating the perfect catapult.

A team of Lynwood Avenue Elementary School fifth grade students in the Sachem Central School District showcased their elegance and grace as they danced their way to a firstplace finish at Dancing Classrooms Long Island’s Colors of the Rainbow Team Match on May 21 at Barton Elementary School

in Patchogue.

The team-based competition that included 60 students representing five schools from across Long Island was a community celebration for students who participated in the 10week, 20-lesson Dancing Classrooms program.

For 10 years, Lynwood fifth graders have parti-

cipated in the dance programs that teaches eight ballroom dances, a line dance and a folk dance while incorporating elements important to dance such as teamwork, respect, selfconfidence and nonverbal communication.

Recognized For Humanitarian Efforts Suffolk County Legislator Tom Muratore recognized and presented a Proclamation to Lauren Breuer, a Senior at Sachem High School North in Ronkonkoma .

Lauren Breuer is the recipient of the President’s Volunteer Service Award and the Suffolk County Principals Leadership Award. She has shown leadership skills by being Class President for all

four years of her high school career. She has demonstrated a true passion for helping others through fundraising efforts and extensive community service hours at both a Nursing Home and an Animal Rescue Center.

Additionally, Lauren coordinated multiple fundraisers for ALS, in memory of her late grandmother, Loretta.

Artists Race The Clock with a box filled with various supplies and a list of specifications their artistic creation had to follow for that round. During each timed round, students worked expeditiously to create a work of art that met all of the specifications while using all of the materials provided.

At the completion of each round, teams

presented their work to a panel of three judges who judged the work based on creativity, collaboration and the use of materials.

After each round, teams were eliminated based on the judges’ decisions until a winner was selected.

A Visit From Miss Empire State Connetquot High School alumna Alexa Sheryll recently visited with the kindergartners enrolled in Linda Ziegler Pennington’s class at Edith L. Slocum Elementary School to speak with the students about her journey toward being named Miss Empire State 2019.

During her time spent in the classroom, Alexa talked to the excited students about her years as a Connetquot student, and the positive effect Mrs. Pennington had on her future career.

After reading a book to the students about dealing with bullies, she answered their questions about growing up in Ronkonkoma, her experiences as Miss Empire State, and her real job as director of community affairs for the Town of Hempstead.

The children were excited to talk about her pageant experience, her pageant clothing, as well as the volunteer community work she does to fight bullying and to register citizens to vote.

“The children loved her; it was an honor to have her come back to visit my students and the district,” said Mrs. Pennington. “I am so very proud of the woman she has become, and honored to have worked with her as a student. We are all so very proud of Alexa.”

Additionally, The Town of Oyster Bay declared April 16, 2019 as Alexa Sheryll Day due to her altruistic efforts.

Alexa will represent New York at the USA National Miss Scholarship Pageant at Disney World this summer.

Vocalists Tour The District Student-members of Connetquot High School’s talented Concert Choir recently toured the district’s elementary schools in an effort to inspire an early love for music and aspiration to join one of Connetquot High School’s shining music programs.

With assistance from director Brad Drinkwater, the Concert Choir put their incredible vocal talents on full display for students and faculty alike, singing a number of tunes such

as “Unclouded Day,” “The Runner,” “Pål På Haugen” and “John the Revelator.”

The students, spanning grades 10-12, showcased their groups’ vocal ranges as well, further proving how a vast number of pristine vocal ranges are essential toward creating one concise sound which encompasses the choir.

Additionally, as a fun activity, studentvolunteers were called up to co-conduct with Mr. Drinkwater, as they raised and lowered their arms to

indicate the pitch at which the student-musicians should sing to.

Once enrolled in Connetquot High School, student-musicians can aspire to join one of the three traditional choirs offered, such as the Mixed Choir (Grades 9-12, directed by James Nagle), Treble Choir (Grades 10-12, directed

by Elizabeth Owens) and the Concert Choir (Grades 10-12, directed by Brad Drinkwater).

Students from the Aviation Program at Bixhorn Technical Center (BTC) are used to reaching new heights. In a recent pinning ceremony, the students were honored for completing either their first solo flight, or getting their private pilot certificate by the end of the year. Aviation and Private Pilot Training is one of several programs offered by the Eastern Long Island Academy of Applied Technology. The Academy is the Career and Technical Education Program of Eastern Suffolk BOCES and has schools in Bellport, Oakdale, and Riverhead.

Students entering the

Aviation and Private Pilot Training Program are put through a rigorous curriculum designed to prepare them to be able to go on a solo flight or graduate with their private pilot’s license. The Academy has a relationship with Mid Island Air Service, located in Brookhaven, New York, where students are able to fly.

Twelve students were honored for completing their first solo flight, and another two received their private pilot certificate.

Students were pinned with a set of flight wings.

The wings, which is a pin worn on the left breast, indicate that the recipient

has completed flight training. Two students were also honored with scholarships during the event. Julia Bonafede of Rocky Point High School, and Derek Coppola of Westhampton Beach High School received the Louis Mancuso, Sr. Aviation Scholarship—a $1000 scholarship from Mid Island Air Service that is awarded to Long Island high school seniors with a love of aviation. Coppola also received a $1000 Alumni grant for furthering his education at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.
