t the General Meeting of the Suffolk County Legislature on June 1st, Elysia Tiess from the Longwood School District was honored for winning the “Be Pool Smart” poster contest. Each year, with a resolution sponsored

The YMCA of Long Island announced today it has partnered with Stew Leonard III Children’s Charities to participate in the 7th annual World’s Largest Swimming Lesson™ on Friday, June 24th, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., to promote water safety. The momentous global event is one of the many ongoing YMCA of Long Island initiatives intended to educate individuals of all ages about the importance of practicing water safety skills.

“Kids have a lot of fun at this event, but there is a very serious lesson being taught,” said Anne Brigis, President and CEO of the YMCA of Long Island.

“Promoting water safety is a top priority at the Y all year, and it goes beyond teaching swim techniques.

Aquatic directors at all of our branches teach skills to help swimmers of all levels develop a sense of comfort and security in the water. Participating in this event will help bring much-needed awareness and skills that children and adults need to safely enjoy swimming this summer.”

As part of the Annual World’s Largest Swimming Lesson™, more than 500 locations in over 20 countries and 40 states will host swim lessons on the same date. Currently, the fifth Guinness World Record™ was set on June 20th, 2014 with 36,564 participants from 22 countries, for the most people participating in a swimming lesson at one time.

The YMCA of Long Island, a past participant of the initiative in 2012, anticipates at least 50 local children and swimmers to take part in the event at two local branches, the Huntington YMCA and Great South Bay, in an effort to help build awareness and prevent

The Paddle Battle Team Challenge is a recreational Stand Up Paddle Board and Kayak race where groups will compete against each other for the coveted Paddle Battle Team Challenge trophy.

The race will consist of teams of four competitors who will traverse the 2.5 mile race course designed for all skill levels. The team with the overall best combined time will take

home the championship trophy along with the title of Top Team. The Award Ceremony will take place during a Family BBQ and Bash, which will include food, music, drinks and more for those cheering the teams on from the sidelines.

level, with under a twoday supply of O negative, B negative, and A negative.

As we head into the summer months, we are reminded of how essential it is that our community maintain steady participation in blood donation. Preparation for events such as these — having blood on hospital shelves in advance — is key to potentially save lives.

“By spreading the word or even hosting your own blood drive, inviting

friends, family, and community organizations, you may save lives in your community,” said Andrea Cefarelli, Executive Director of NYBC. “We are in dire need of O negative blood with a reserve that is currently below a two day supply, and that is just too low.”

Historically, during the summer months, blood centers have had to focus on building up the community’s blood product supply, as it

tends to diminish due to seasonal factors. While summer months are marked by a long vacation period, with schools in recess and leisure time, the need for blood never takes a vacation. NYBC urges individuals to seek out nearby blood donation centers and to engage in the selfless act of donating, helping to prevent a summer blood shortage and potentially saving the life of someone in need.

BROOKHAVEN PICNIC - Today, Legislator Tom Muratore attended the Town of Brookhaven’s Annual Senior Citizens’ Picnic, held at the Longwood Estate in Ridge.

The festivities included barbecued food, vendors offering services to the senior population and a disc jockey playing tunes that kept many guests on the dance floor. raising money to help special needs children by collecting enough quarters to stretch out for a mile or more. More than $4,000 was raised with all proceeds to benefit The Friendship Circle and special needs children and fund programs such as Bowling Buddies, Pet Therapy, Friends @ Home

and holiday events.

Hunting also changed the environment during the Gilded Age. While hunting was a necessity to eat, a number of hunting clubs developed; the Olympic Club, the Wyandanch Club and the Sportsman Club. The hunted species included ducks, deer and small game. Along with the lavish parties and lifestyles of the rich came Haute Couture clothing. Fancy and expensive hats made of plume feathers and pelts used for clothing were prominent.

Long Island’s abundance of native plants and plants also played a significant role in the dynamics of a complex ecosystem. Nonnatural exotic invaders, such as crab grass, gypsy moths, dandelions, beetles and carp disrupted the ecosystem. The natural abundance of shellfish led to the development of hatcheries and the Doxdee Clam Company.

Jacob Ockers of Oakdale started the Bluepoint Oyster Company. The overabundance of oyster harvesting led to the demise of the industry for some time.

The changes taking place in the ecosystem also had some positive changes. The development of the Audubon Society, Arboretums such as the Bayard Cutting Arboretum developed with land donated by Mrs. William Bayard Cutting led to the development of Botanical Gardens. These developments became part of taking environmental responsibility.

Salt marshes and wetlands provided nesting areas and protected shorelines.

Through this informative presentation, Diane Halliday shed light on the history of Long Island during a period of change, expansion and growth. Keeping this local history alive for future generations is part of our mission. From housing publications in our collection to providing enlightening programs, the library strives to preserve history for generations to come.

On Wednesday, May 18th, Dowling College Librarian Diane Holliday led a presentation at the Connetquot Public Library focusing on the abundance of life found in the Long Island South Shore environment during the Gilded Age. The Gilded Age began at the end of the Civil War and lasted until the early 1900’s. During this time, a number of wealthy families built lavish mansions on the South Shore of Long Island, including the Vanderbilts.

The development of mansions and lavish estates had an effect on the ecosystem. The need for materials, logging, homebuilding and boatbuilding changed the landscape of Long Island.

What to do with the waste from these extravagant structures became an issue. Among the nonnatural exotic invaders, humans had both positive and negative effects on the ecosystem.

With Long Island’s close proximity to New York City, its development coincided with that of the burgeoning metropolis.

Museums developed as part of an outgrowth of the large art collections of the wealthy. The idea was that art collected by the rich would be shared with the masses. The large-scale dioramas of the American Museum of Natural History were natural displays of taxidermy developed during this time. William K. Vanderbilt’s estate in Centerport became a center of classification and scientific discovery. The development of zoos was a result of the donation of exotic animals by the rich.

Humans changed the dynamic of the ecosystem with the development of agriculture, transportation and accidental changes in organisms as well as the addition. The introduction of a species to the ecosystem also changed the environment.

The introduction of the European starling, the addition of 200 million starlings was an outgrowth of the concept of introducing the birds of Shakespeare into the

POOL SMART WINNER - At the General Meeting of the Suffolk County Legislature on June 1st, Elysia Tiess from the Longwood School District was honored for winning the “Be Pool Smart” poster contest. Each year, with a resolution sponsored by Legislator William Spencer, the county hosts the “Be Pool Smart” contest to raise awareness about the important of pool safety and to help prevent incidences of drowning. Students are asked to participate by creating a poster with relevant pool safety tips.

Peer Support Project

On June 11th, Supervisor Ed Romaine (left) joined the Dwyer Veterans Peer Support Project for their 3rd Annual Day of Wellness at Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck in Center Moriches.

The event is a joint initiative of the Suffolk County United Veterans and Suffolk County Veterans Service Agency that offers demonstrations and treatment presentations for veterans dealing with health related issues and Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome.

More than 100 veterans

and family members were in attendance, with 40 service providers and vendors on display for participants to engage.

The Dwyer Veterans Peer Support Project believes that all people, regardless of past experiences, psychiatric diagnosis, trauma history, criminal proceedings, race, age, gender, sexual orientation or substance abuse history have the capacity to recover from stress related to their experience and regain independence.

Letter of Intent Longwood High School senior Brielle Spillett will continue her bowling career at LIU Post this fall where she will major in Secondary Education Mathematics.

A six-year varsity bowler, Brielle was named AllCounty, All-League and finished up her senior year with a 195 bowling average.

St. Baldrick’s Fundraiser Students from the Middle Country Central School District’s Jericho Elementary School recently hosted its eleventh annual St. Baldrick’s Foundation head-shaving event to raise awareness and support research to fight children’s cancer.

This year, more than 35 students, teachers and

parents had their heads ceremoniously shaved and raised more than $3,200.

The event is coordinated by fifth grade teacher Eric Burchard.

The event is part of the Middle Country Central School District’s initiative that provides students opportunities to participate in community service

programs and encourages them to find ways to help those in need.

Over the past 11 years, Jericho Elementary School has raised more than $30,000 through its St. Baldrick’s Foundation head shaving events aimed at funding research to cure childhood cancers.

Debra Galante, Deirdre Kirwin, Rosemary Riegger, Charles Trupia and Jean Williams were recognized and commended for their years of service to the children of the Connetquot Central School District.

Colleagues, spouses and long-time friends joined CTA President Anthony

Felicio, Jr., in celebrating the careers of the latest class of retires, wishing them all good health and happiness in their well-earned retirement.

Felicio, on behalf of the organization, thanked the retirees for their dedication to the families of the Connetquot community.

Planned Spontaneity By: Jamie Lynn Ryan There are those who need to have every detail of each day planned down to the last minute, with little room for even the slightest compromise or delay. And then there are those individuals who prefer to fly by the seat of their pants; no blueprint, no nothing, open to whatever adventures might beckon.

Me, I would definitely put myself in the former category.

Routine is my friend; schedules my muse. There is something about the sense of accomplishment one gets from checking items off a “To Do” list that lends itself to peace of mind. Of course, life itself is not simply one giant “To Do” list.

It requires a measure of flexibility and the ability to roll with those punches that may come flying your way.

This is where that spontaneity comes into play.

Case in point: I recently set out one Saturday afternoon to embark on a belated birthday

celebration for a close friend from high school. The plan – to head to the beach for our first, postMemorial Day outing, followed by dinner and maybe some prime sunset viewing and photography opportunities. “Happy Wanderers” we are, indeed.

Of course, no sooner did I pack my beach bag, when the clouds rolled in, the winds kicked up and the sun disappeared behind a deep haze. Perfect sun bathing weather indeed. Alternate plans, anyone?

Determined not to let the entire day go to waste, we feverishly started brainstorming, checking weather forecasts, tracking the storm radar and hoping for the best. Instead of heading out to the sand, we parked at Field #5 at Robert Moses and decided to take a little stroll over to Kismet, Fire Island for lunch, wander around a bit, and head back – hopefully before the skies decided to open up with the impending thunderstorm that had been threatening all day.

Phase one went off without a

hitch, and the sun even managed to show itself for the majority of the journey. Imagine that. Phase two consisted of a quick little stopover at Gilgo Beach – after we both realized that neither of us had ever been there – before heading up to the Northport area for dinner and then to a laser light show at the Vanderbilt Planetarium.

And then came the rains.

Drenching, sheets of rain, pouring down on the windshield as we made our way down Ocean Parkway toward the bridge.

Maybe there’ll be a rainbow, I mused, as I peered through the wipers. Then this detour will have been completely worth it, this trip to the beach on a cloudy day, interrupted by torrential rain, ending with one of nature’s most magical creations…

And then, there it was, straight ahead, stretching over Cedar Beach. I looked at my friend and said, “Shall we pull over for a photo op?” Of course. Always time for a quick detour.

To celebrate International Albinism Awareness Day, students at the Connetquot School District’s Edith L. Slocum Elementary School recently learned about albinism from fourth grade student Daniel Avila.

Avila has albinism and is legally blind, a common combination because both are affected by a lack of melanin.

Avila and his vision teacher prepared an interactive PowerPoint presentation to teach more than twenty fourth grade students in Dina Pinelli’s class about how to prevent sun damage to skin if you have albinism, characteristics of a person with albinism and how to celebrate differences rather than bullying people because of how they look.

Opening Up Ms. Pinelli’s class also wore “crazy hats” during the presentation, symbolizing the need for people with albinism to protect themselves from the sun.

The purpose of this event was to increase awareness about this uncommon genetic disorder and promote anti-bullying in schools

Swim Lesson Event Continued From 3 drowning.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), fatal drowning is the second-leading cause of unintentional injuryrelated death for children ages one to 14 years-old.

Young children are the most susceptible, as they can drown in less than two inches of water based on numerous reports issued

by the CDC. “Our son drowned when he was 2 years-old and our mission in life is to teach young kids to swim. Who does it better than the Long Island YMCAs?” said Stew and Kim Leonard, cofounders of Stew Leonard III Children’s Charities.

“This day is all about having fun and teaching the basics. Drowning is preventable!”

Since its inception, more than 155,000 children and

adults have participated in the World’s Largest Swimming Lesson™ event and has helped raise awareness by generating more than 500,000,000 lifesaving, learn-to-swim media impressions.

“We don’t want kids to get all jammed up and ruin the rest of their lives or fatally injure someone else,” said Deputy Sheriff Thomas Incidence from the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department, speaking at a simulated drunk buggy presentation at Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) Islip Career Center. The purpose of students wearing goggles and driving on a simulated obstacle course gives them the perception of being intoxicated.

“We want students to be safe. It’s prom season now and we need them to get the message that you can’t drink or text and drive,” said ESBOCES School Social Worker Amy Roland.

The drinking age may be 21 but many young adults

do begin drinking at 18 years old. “They drink to the point that they can’t find their cars or they walk into traffic,” said Incidence.

Sayville UFSD student Trina completed the obstacle course but not until after hitting and crushing several of the orange cones used to symbolize a person. “I felt really awful. I wouldn’t want to live with that for the rest of my life, that I hurt or killed someone.

I’m glad I participated in this exercise,” she said.

Patchogue-Medford UFSD student Dakota and Central Islip UFSD student Terrell agreed that wearing the goggles really messed with their perception. “It was like I had double vision and I had a hard time

focusing,” said Dakota.

Terrell said it was a really bad experience for him and he would not drink and drive.

The simulated driving vehicles used by the Sheriff’s department are funded through a grant. The office has three driving buggies and DWI impairment goggles. Specially trained Sheriff’s office personnel provide a brief 20-minute presentation on DWI laws in New York State before the student’s drive the buggies.

Roland said, “It’s important that the students get to experience what it would really feel like to be driving while intoxicated or texting because it might make them think twice about certain situations.”
