n Wednesday, June 3rd, students from Connetquot High School in Bohemia presented members of Community Ambulance Company with a donation of stuffed teddy bears. The bears were made as part of a project for the Future Teachers of America Club.

Community Ambulance Company will use the teddy bears with pediatric patients. The idea is for the bears to help lessen the anxiety of being in an ambulance.

The project has helped the efficiency of the tech crew and has improved the appearance of the

Kieran’s Eagle project was an informational kiosk at the Rolling Oaks golf course. This kiosk educates golfers about the dangers of heart attacks while golfing and teaches the steps to ensure a safe golfing experience.

Cliff “Kip” Johannesen, who at one point was paralyzed and in a wheelchair but now is able to walk with the assistance of canes is offering services as a U.S. Coast Guard Licensed Captain and P.A.D.I Master Diver to people with disabilities in the Long Island/NYC Area.

With his boat, docked in Lindenhurst, he is volunteering his spare time to take children with disabilities (along with a parent or guardian) or disabled veterans on fishing, snorkeling and boating trips in the Great South Bay. Golf Outing The Long Island Coalition Against Bullying is holding its first annual golf outing on Friday, June 26th, with a 1:30 p.m. shotgun start at Rock Hill Golf & Country Club at 105 Clancy Road in Manorville. This is the second annual golf outing to support The Coalition’s efforts to help the victims of bullying and their families. Simmer Down, Society Well, it’s happened. Still days away from the official start of summer, and already the first utterings of “it’s too hot” have been heard. After one of the most bitterly cold, snowiest winters on record, one that seemed to stretch on far past its allotted time, and we can’t even appreciate the warmth for more than a day.

What is it that makes our society so…unsatisfied?

We live in one of the most ideal climate zones where we are fortunate to experience all four seasons for equal periods of time throughout the year. And yet, other than the occasional universal

comment that it’s “such a beautiful day,” we are more often than not in a constant state of complaint.

Sure, any extreme can be “too much” for some to handle; but, I think we’ve become so accustomed to the temperaturecontrolled bubbles that we live in that our sensitivity to such things is absurdly heightened. Seasons are designed to be enjoyed outdoors, at least for part of the time.

Personally, I look forward to the warmth of spring and summer, the extended daylight hours and the ample activities available – from free concerts to baseball games to outdoor theatre and dance performances to

fireworks…the options are endless.

The last thing I want to do is spend my time hibernating in a dimlylit, air-conditioned cave of sorts, one with all the windows shut, blinds drawn and outside world blocked out. No thank you.

Let’s put things in perspective, people. We don’t live in a desert. We live on an island, one bordered by beaches on every coast. In between, there are lakes and rivers and plenty of pools of both the indoor and outdoor variety. I’m sure we can manage to survive a few months of summer.

Maybe, if we really try, we might even manage to enjoy it.

Christopher and his family were in their car when Christopher saw smoke coming from a house at 14 Newey Lane in Brookhaven Hamlet.

His mother stopped the car and to their surprise, noticed that the flower pot on the front

porch was on fire.

It was Christopher’s swift thinking and gallant response that prevented the fire from spreading, and thus prevented a more serious outcome.

Longwood High School student actors excelled at the 13th Annual Teeny Awards bringing home an impressive four awards in major categories.

Held at Center Moriches High School on Sunday, June 7th, the ceremony presented performances from 16 participating high schools.

Shoes For All, the not for profit agency that collects new and gently worn shoes for those in need in our community recently held a shoe drive at North Shore University Hospital.

From May 5th to May 17th, the hospital collected 365 pairs of shoes that will be processed by Shoes For All volunteers, and donated to those in need in our community.

“In just 13 days, they collected 365 pairs of shoes...” Said the

organization’s founder Dr. Mary Carlson DPM, “It’s great that the community stepped up and I know these families will be thankful.” Dr. Carlson was speaking about the hundreds of families her organization helps each year at one of their many events. Children and adults across the island are in need of proper fitting shoes but just can’t afford them.

Dr. Carlson also thanked the Director of Volunteer Services and head of the

volunteer department at the hospital Lisa Briman and Justine Lewis for their assistance during the 13-day shoe drive.

“Lisa and Justine were fantastic. Their spirit for volunteering for those in the community that need help really drove this thing home!”

Since it began in 2010, Shoes For All has collected over 30,000 pairs of shoes for the community.

Studies in observational drawing, figure drawing, mixed media, watercolors, acrylic, printmaking, digital photography, landscapes, book arts, found object art, sculpture, and alternative techniques will be explored. Summer Art Adventure

The Art League of Long Island’s Summer Art Adventure, now in its 20th year welcomes fresh faces and fresh ideas for 2015.

Under the guidance of new Summer Art Adventure Program Director Marianne Mead, the arts enrichment program that has served a generation of children has extended its weekly sessions for ages 5-14 from four weeks to six weeks of summer fun. New themes and approaches have been introduced in addition to offering longtime favorite activities.

Formerly held at the Elwood Middle School and at the Art League’s center in Dix Hills, the six-week sessions will be held at the Chestnut Hill Elementary School in Dix Hills.

Parents have the option of selecting one or more weekly sessions starting week of June 29th and ending week of August 3rd.

From 9 to 11:30 a.m. young children ages 5 and 6 and from 9am to 2pm children and teens ages 7-12 will learn drawing, painting, crafts, and sculpture. Beginning on June 21st, Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck will open up the 2015 summer season for young campers with special needs and disabilities. There will be ten sessions throughout the course of the summer, each lasting for six days.

Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck provides services and opportunities for children

and young adults ages 6 to 21 to learn while having fun. Campers can enjoy activities such as boating, arts and crafts, swimming, music and sports. The supportive environment helps children to develop self-esteem and to achieve personal growth while enjoying recreational activities.

The camp has been helping children flourish since its early stages in 1941, when the Rotary

Club of the Moriches arranged a beach-side picnic for children with Polio. This inspired the founding of the official camp in 1948, when Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck held its first summer session for 25 children with Polio.

Today, it continues to be a safe place where specialneeds campers can enjoy themselves and broaden their horizons.

Improvements have been made to the dormitories

and the dining hall to provide the best experience possible for the campers.

Thanks to the renovations that were made to the dining hall, campers and staff members are now able to eat together rather than in shifts.

Private donations are the camp’s sole source of funding; therefore, yearround fundraising efforts are critical to the camp’s operations. Camp Pa-QuaTuck has teamed up with

Preparing For Summer the local Rotary Clubs and other organizations to hold these charitable events including a Chinese Auction, 5K Run, Breakfast with Santa, Spring Fling Joy Prom, Bradstock, Oktoberfest, Spooky Walk, the Fuoco Memorial Golf Outing, and the Inlet Ride Bike-A-Thon.

“We are excited to open up our 68th season to our new and returning campers,” said Bridget Costello, Director of

Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck. “It is because of the efforts of the Moriches Rotary Club, private donors, and other groups that we have been able to open every summer and give these children and young adults the chance to have fun and be themselves.”
