Intermountain volunteers worked alongside Northwell staff to provide life-saving care for COVID-19 patients at Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New Hyde Park, North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset and Southside Hospital in Bay Shore, three of the region’s hardest-hit facilities.

The History Of Flag Day

Even though the Fourth of July, a holiday in which the flag is prominently and proudly displayed, had long been celebrated as the birthday of the United States, Cigrand wanted a holiday that would focus specifically on the flag in all its glory. June 14 was selected because it marked the anniversary of the official adoption of the first flag. Cigrand led his school in the first formal observance of the holiday, and throughout his life continued to advocate for respect of the flag.

Various other organizations liked the idea of a day to honor the flag, including the State Board of Education of New York, the Betsy Ross House and the New York Society of the Sons of the Revolution. Yet, it wasn’t until May 30, 1916, that Flag Day was officially established by presidential proclamation by President Woodrow Wilson. Still, it would take another 33 years for President Truman to sign an Act of Congress designating June 14 as the

official National Flag Day, which he did on August 3, 1949.

Americans can honor the flag by displaying it on Flag Day. Here’s how to display the flag properly, courtesy of Military.com.

• The flag should be free of any obstructions, such as power lines or tree limbs.

• If displayed with other flags, Old Glory should be at the top-most point or in the center of a horizontal array of flags.

• If the flag is displayed on its side, the blue field should be to the left.

• The flag should be raised in the morning at a residence or business and taken down at night. The only exception to the flag being out at night is if it’s illuminated.

• Flags can be repaired.

However, if a flag is tattered, it can be removed and brought to a local VFW hall to be properly disposed of.

Flag Day honors the Stars and Stripes, a symbol of the great American nation.

Members of the class of 2020 have many decisions to make.

Many high school students enroll in trade schools or colleges after graduation, while college graduates start their careers or begin their pursuit of advanced degrees when their undergrad days draw to a close. More and more high school and college graduates are taking gap years.

According to the American Gap Year Association, a gap year is defined as an experimental semester or full academic year taken between high school and college in order to deepen practical, professional and personal awareness.

Students often take a break from school as a chance to travel or gain some professional experience. Others use gap years as a chance for personal exploration before moving on to the next chapter in their lives.

Gap years may once have been looked at unfavorably, but they have evolved from such perceptions into opportunities to volunteer abroad, learn a new language in a foreign land, visit one’s ancestral homeland, or work as an intern.

While many students take gap years prior to entering college, even college graduates can benefit from taking time

off after earning their degrees.

Gap years are now seen as a way to improve a curriculum vitae and gain relevant work experience in a particular field. The resource GapYear.com indicates employers actively employ people who have taken a gap year, prefering candidates who have real-world experience.

Preparation is necessary before diving head first into a gap year.

Students can speak with people who have already taken gap years and ask questions.

Graduates should approach the decision of whether or not to take a gap year just as they would any other large, life-changing decision.

Experts say that it can take between nine and 12 months to plan a gapyear itinerary. Finances are a consideration, and gap years require ample savings and a carefully constructed budget in order to be transformed from a dream into a reality.

Gap years are a growing trend that can help students improve their résumés, see the world and gain invaluable experience.

The American flag is a symbol of the country’s history, pride and success in overcoming political oppression. Through its many incarnations and variations, the Stars and Stripes has waved over government buildings, schools and private residences.

According to History. com, in 1775, the Second Continental Army led to the creation of the first “American” flag. However, that flag was too similar to the British Union Jack flag, George Washington requested a revision.

In 1777, the Second Continental Congress passed a resolution stating that the “flag of the United States be 13 stripes, alternate red and white.”

Furthermore, the “union” was represented by 13 stars of white in a blue field, “representing a new constellation.”

More than a century later, a small-town Wisconsin teacher named Bernard Cigrand came up with the idea for an annual flag day in 1885.

By Diane Caudullo At the corner of Horseblock Road and Middle Country Road sat a car wash since the 70s, which by the early 90s was dilapidated and about to close down for good. Thanks to one man who was willing to purchase it, Ron Kass, it was revived to a successful car wash!

Long Islanders have driven through this wash for years, but I don’t think many really

think about it as a small business, instead probably just as a service to clean their car.

He designated areas so people could comfortably sit while the employees meticulously cleaned the cars inside and out. He also implemented the changes needed to turn it into a successful and profitable business.

More than just a good community member, Island Car Wash is good for the local economy because it employs a very large number of people.

Many of Ron’s employees have stayed on staff for years and Island’s upper management team has been with Ron for over 20 years, which is almost unheard of in the car wash business!

Alternatives To Traditional Graduation Ceremonies

country have been approaching graduation plans in various ways.

The Tucson Unified School District postponed its graduation ceremonies to late June rather than canceling them altogether.

Schools in Spotsylvania and Fauquier Counties in Virginia held modified versions of in-person ceremonies in May, which limited the number of family members in attendance and required relatives to hand out diplomas as a safety precaution.

Students in Cherry Creek School District in Colorado found out they will have a modified inperson, students-only graduation ceremony in July. Relatives can watch the ceremony on a live stream.

The Army will proceed with this year’s graduation ceremony at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in June, with President Donald Trump giving the commencement speech for cadets. The 1,000 cadets will return to campus to attend the ceremony, which will include procession changes and other social distancing modifications in line with current health requirements.

Whether a school hosts a graduation ceremony in-person

or not, families can organize their own at-home graduations.

All relatives who are graduating (whether from high school, college or even those moving up from fifth grade to middle school and eighth grade to high school) can participate.

Here are a few tips: • Pool resources to borrow the right number of caps or gowns from friends or family.

• Play “Pomp and Circumstance” over a bluetooth speaker.

• Have the graduates march around the perimeter of a yard or down a neighborhood street.

• Ask a relative to give a keynote speech.

• Take graduation photos outside of the school doors or on campus where allowed.

• Cater a graduation luncheon or dinner from a favorite neighborhood eatery.

• Employ all necessary safety precautions, such as seating guests six feet apart from one another and wearing masks.

Graduation ceremonies have changed due to COVID-19, but graduates can still commemorate this milestone moment in their lives.

Graduation caps are one of the most visible aspects of graduation dress. Many scholars believe the mortarboard style cap graduates don was developed from the biretta, a similar-looking Italian hat worn by Roman Catholic clergy.

In the 12th and 13th centuries, students and teachers typically wore

clerical clothing because the church was highly influential at this time.

Medieval universities helped inspire academic dress, including the familiar graduation cap.

Mortarboards are shaped like a square, perhaps to give them a scholarly appearance like a book or to represent the shape of a quad on the campus of England’s Oxford University, where many graduation dress customs are believed to have originated.

Others theorize that the mortarboard, which is named after the flat board used by bricklayers and masons,

represents the skill of a master workman.

Many graduation caps were initially black or gray. According to the graduation information site Graduation Source, when color photography became the norm in the 20th century, schools began to use gowns and caps in different shades because they would show up in photographs.

Schools often coordinate caps and gowns so their colors reflect their official school colors.

While certain degrees warrant different styles of gown, cowls and hoods, mortarboard caps are relatively standard.

In addition to the cap, there is a single button at the top. Tassels hang from these buttons. At commencement, tassels are traditionally worn on the right side of the cap and then moved to the left once graduates receive their diplomas.

Graduation caps are part of the larger scope of academic dress that comprises school traditions. Millions of graduates across the globe will don their caps and toss them into the air later in celebration of their hard work.

When the novel coronavirus COVID-19 struck the world at the end of 2019, few people anticipated just how much the virus would upend daily life in the months to come. Because there currently is no cure or standardized treatment for the disease, the best course of action has involved maintaining social distance to help cut down on the rate of spread.

Social distancing has changed the way the public shops, interacts socially with friends and family members and attends school. For the thousands of students comprising the class of 2020, social distancing also changes how they will graduate.

Graduation decisions are something high schools and colleges have grappled with in the face of social distancing. Graduation has become a modify-asyou-go model in many towns and cities. In some instances, all in-person ceremonies have been restricted and virtualonly graduations will take place. For example, New Jersey’s Department of Education was only allowing virtual graduation events as graduation season approached.

Scanlon’s Traveling Salon is run by Eileen Scanlon, a fellow New Yorker whose mission is to cultivate a community based on kindness, respect and equality. Eileen has been a NYS Licensed Cosmetologist for over 30 years, however she has experience in many other industries as well. She has worked with corporate America, non-profits, academia and local grassroots organizations. She is wellrounded and truly one of the kindest people I have ever met.

In 2010, Eileen began volunteering, offering free haircuts to people in need.

Eileen felt so overjoyed by helping others look and feel beautiful for free while working within various types of socio economic communities, that she eventually began her very own traveling salon. With its catchy slogan, Where Style Comes To You, Scanlon’s Traveling Salon now serves an abundance of people across Long Island.

Some of the communities that Eileen serves are: the home confined and vulnerable, hospice, group homes, sober houses, assisted living communities and those who are differently abled.

She always travels to her customers so they can enjoy her services in the comfort of their home or living space. Her goal is to provide each and every one of her clients with a warm, happy, positive and empathetic experience before, during and after each visit.

She also incorporates her love of social justice and advocacy into her business practice by using only vegan products.

During these trying times when only essential businesses are operating, Eileen has shifted her focus to helping the homless community, a group she feels extremely passionate for. She has been bringing homeless individuals food, clothes, blankets, shoes, etc. to help them feel loved and cared for.

Her clients, along with local restaurants have donated food, gently used clothes, blankets, shoes and more for her to distribute. The homeless community needs attention and assistance and together we can give them the help they need.

Grundy Avenue Elementary School Welcomes New Principal

The Sachem Central School District is proud to announce the recent appointment of Thomas Lipani Jr. as the new principal of Grundy Avenue Elementary School, effective July 1, replacing Laura Amato, who will be retiring at the conclusion of the 20192020 school year.

Mr. Lipani currently serves as the assistant principal of Sawmill Intermediate School in the Commack School District, where he has held the position for the past year. During his time in Commack, he chaired the In-School Support Team with the goal of evaluating academic performance and social relationships to identify struggling students and provide additional student support. Additionally, Mr. Lipani led biweekly curriculum discussions, chaired committees to determine necessary accommodations for students with academic or medical

Spirit’s Promise Equine Rescue is partnering with Neptune Feed & Saddlery ( w w w. n e p t u n e f e e d s . com) and Long Island Equine Trail (www. longislandequinetrail.com) to help support the equine industry on Long Island by launching an islandwide initiative featuring a 30-minutes contactless Long Island Drive-Thru Animal Tour. The family friendly, educational and social distancing experience will begin on Saturday, June 20 2020 with Spirit’s Promise Rescue (www. spiritspromiserescue. org) and North Shore Horse Rescue (www. northshorehorserescue. org).

Every business has been impacted by COVID-19, within the equine industry this holds especially true for the equine rescues who operated on limited recourses prior to the pandemic. The ticketed drive-thru tour will provide these rescues with financial support to provide critical care to their animals that offer services ranging from equine therapy, recreation and jobs throughout the region. The young and the young at heart alike will have the opportunity to reconnect with nature and the farms four legged residents from the safety of their car. Families will enjoy fresh air while being educated about the animals history and will have access to a digital map on their smartphone which will showcase photos and fun

facts about each animal.

Inspired by Spirit’s Promise Equine Rescues Hay For Horses Mobile Food Pantry hosted at Tanger Outlets Riverhead during Giving Tuesday on May 5, the Neptune Feed & Saddlery collaboration will support increasing the frequency of the horse mobile food pantry throughout all of Long Island for equine organizations going through economic challenges to receive free food for their animals.

An economic impact study conducted by The American Horse Council shows that the New York state’s Equine Industry is the second largest agribusiness in New York, providing the state with $5.3 billion in economic impact generating 42,400

full-time jobs for New Yorkers.

The horse industry also does its part for the preservation of green space. Approximately 1.3 million acres are currently used for horserelated purposes, and the equine industry is active in every one of New York’s 62 counties.

Students Recognized By Islip Town Board Two Connetquot High School students were recently recognized by the Islip Town Board for their many achievements and service to the school community.

Junior Julianna Levanti received the Student Achievement Award for outstanding achievement in leadership. Levanti was recognized for her many leadership roles including treasurer for the CHS school store, treasurer for DECA,

student representative for the Connetquot Business Advisory Council, presenting Junior Achievement lessons to fifth grade students as a member of the National Business Honor Society and for her academic excellence in her business courses.

Senior Alex Yeung received the Student Achievement Award for outstanding achievement in social studies. Yeung was recognized for his

academic achievement in his social studies courses during the last four years and his leadership of the Rho Kappa National Social Studies Honor Society this past year.

Hospital Association Offers $2,000 Scholarship

The Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council (NSHC) announces a $2,000 scholarship for college juniors/seniors or post graduate students who are studying Journalism, Marketing/ Communications, or Healthcare Administration.

(The scholarship is not for clinical-based study.) The Ann Marie Brown Memorial Scholarship honors the late Ann Marie Brown, who served as vice president for government and public relations for the Hospital Council from 1983 to 1993. The scholarship is

administered by the Hospital Council’s Communications Committee. Filing deadline is June 15, 2020.
