Family Service League (FSL), a Long Island based non-profit human service organization, is seeking volunteers to train as advocates for our Long Island Seniors living in nursing homes and long term adult care homes throughout Suffolk County.

A certified Ombudsman is a special volunteer who works with the residents to resolve complaints and concerns. The goal of the program is to protect the health, safety, welfare and rights of the residents in long term care facilities. FSL offers initial training classes, ongoing supervision and continuing education for all volunteer candidates.

V o l u n t e e r ombudspersons will visit an assigned long term care home once a week to help seniors and their families understand and exercise their rights to quality care and better quality of life.

A Time to Remember

My alma mater, Lindy High School, recently held its senior prom last week, bringing to mind my own end-of-year soirees which took place so many years ago.

Our senior prom was, of course, a highlight; even more so for the fact that it was held at the top of the World Trade Center, at the one and only Windows on the World. What a magical night it was, and what an unforgettable time we had celebrating among the clouds, overlooking the greatest city in the world.

Often forgotten in the recollections of high school, however, was the equally memorable evening we had at our junior prom. Held at the famed Narragansett Inn, it brought the elegance of our first “real” dance to our hometown, complete with swirling gowns and high heels, and hair and makeup appointments for all on the afternoon of the big event. Remember, at this point,

sweet sixteen’s had yet to take on the extravagance of a small wedding, and proms truly were the formal affairs of the age.

Everything down to the smallest detail was coordinated, from corsage colors to jewelry and accessories, to the tiny flowers and rhinestone clips which adorned many of the girls’ hair. The class voted on their pick for “Junior Prom Song” in the weeks leading up to the event, forgoing the more current hits for a classic from Long Island’s own Billy Joel, “This is the Time.”

I remember taking pictures beforehand at my grandparents’ house, walking down the big staircase and masquerading in all sorts of corny poses for the camera. This, of course, predated the advent of cell phones and the notorious “selfies” of today; but every single collection of friends had the same standard photo in front of their limo, couples angled inward, corsages on display.

There was something elegant in the simplicity.

Junior prom was a bit more casual for our group. Instead of a limo, we carpooled. Instead of any post-prom festivities, we stopped off at McDonald’s on the way home – in the excitement of the evening, it seems no one had really taken the time to sit down and eat. We were too busy taking photos by the grand piano in the lobby, cheering on the prom court…and dancing, of course.

I remember coming home that night and sitting up for hours, recollecting every last detail of the evening to my parents, still in my gown and high heels, my hair a little disheveled but none the worse for wear, not wanting the day to end.

Sure, senior prom may have had the pomp and circumstance and the expectation of great things; but junior prom, for me, far exceeded all that. It was, truly the time to remember.

Nearly 150 coaches, athletes, administrators, family members and residents of the Connetquot Central School District recently attended the 2017 Athletic Wall of Fame Induction, held at Connetquot High School, to recognize and congratulate 10 individuals who had a positive impact on the district’s athletic community.

The 2017 Wall of Fame inductees include the following: Mike Barbara (Class of 1990/football), Christine Buderman (Class of 1993/track and soccer), Tom Croci Sr. (former Connetquot High School Principal, coach and community contributor), Regina Ely (Class of 1996/ cross-country, basketball

and track), Brian Ferguson (Class of 2007/baseball), Kevin Kaminskey (Class of 1994/wrestling), Jeremy Leggiero (Class of 2009/ football), Kelly Bunster Luquer (Class of 2008/ swimming), Kieran McArdle (Class of 2010/ lacrosse and basketball) and Eric Stolfa (Class of 2000/soccer, wrestling and lacrosse).

Replicas of the plaques, which are mounted on the Wall of Fame in the athletic wing of the high school, were presented to each of the inductees by their former coaches. Athletic Wall of Fame inductees are selected by a committee of veteran coaches, teachers and administrators from nominations submitted by qualified Connetquot

student-athletes, coaches and community members.

Prior to the induction ceremonies, all in attendance had the opportunity to catch up on the last few years over a tasty brunch courtesy of the Connetquot High School food service employees.

Powers of a psyche are mine from time to time Most often when cupid his bells lets chime.

I actually feel the thoughts of people dear to me Without being told, their deepest concerns I see.

Spells are vibrant declarations of a nameless force They have in a chosen media their source.

Yet, at times I succumb and those powers use I do with you, infatuation is my excuse!

Much progress has been made in the fight against heart disease and stroke.

However, many Americans are still not getting the proper amount of exercise that will effectively combat risk factors for serious health issues. According to the American Heart Association, nearly 70 percent of American adults get no regular physical activity. Yet contrary to common perceptions, physical activity is just as important in preventing heart disease as other modifiable risk factors

including smoking, cholesterol and blood pressure. A person is 1.5 to 2.4 times more likely to have coronary heart disease if he or she is inactive.

Adult (and childhood) obesity/overweight level continues to increase: 65% of all Adults are obese or overweight.

Free Training Offered Funding from the NYS Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS) has enabled the Child Care Council of Suffolk to offer free training to child care professionals located within zip codes affected by Super Storm Sandy to help them implement the Pyramid Model (adopted by New York State for social emotional development in young

children through the Center on the Social and Emotional Foundations for Early Learning) into their child care programs.

The affected zip code areas are: 11757, 11701, 11702, 11706, 11726, 11951, 11795, 11717, 11769, 11743, 11704, 11746, 11772, 11725, 11722, 11967, 11798, 11787, 11779, 11770, 11731, 11729, 11901 and 11751. Child care

providers in these locations can obtain six hours of high-quality, OCFS-required training at no cost in the following topics: principles of child development, program development, and safety and security procedures. This special training provides child care professionals with technical assistance and support to help children build resiliency, coping skills

and self-regulation.

Special Event Set The Ronkonkoma Rotary club will honor Navy Seal LT Michael P. Murphy with 50 Mile Run from Spanish Harlem to Ronkonkoma on June 23rd, at 4 p.m., with a send-off from Engine 53 Ladder 43 at 1836 3rd Avenue, New York, NY 10029.

Each year, the Ronkonkoma Rotary Club honors fallen hero of Operation Red Wings Michael P. Murphy by organizing the Michael P. Murphy Run Around The Lake in Ronkonkoma.

The four-mile run also

serves as the primary fundraiser for the club’s charitable endeavors, especially those servicing our nation’s veterans.

Past beneficiaries include Navy Seal LT. Michael P. Murphy Foundation, Lone Survivor Foundation, Navy Seal Foundation, Special Operations Warrior Foundation, General Needs and The Rotary Foundation.

For the past several years, a very dedicated individual, Freddy Rodriguez, has not only participated in the race

but founded the “50 Miles for Murph” run, which takes place overnight from Spanish Harlem to Lake Ronkonkoma to honor Murph and those who died during Operation Red Wings.

The firehouse, Engine 53 Ladder 43, has a deep connection to the fallen Lieutenant.

Shortly after being deployed, he requested enough company patches to distribute to his team of SEALs, which they wore with pride on every mission.

The students got an early start on the Great Brookhaven Clean Up, which was held on May 20 when more than 3500 people participated at locations throughout Brookhaven Town.

On Monday, May 29th, Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker attended Longwood’s Memorial Day services at the beautiful Bartlett Pond Park in Middle Island. The service was hosted by the Middle Island Civic Association, the Longwood Alliance, and Boy Scout Troop 433.

It included song and prayer, remarks by local officials, and a wreath laying ceremony to commemorate the

killed in the June 28th 2005 Operation Red Wings while conducting counterterrorism operations in Afghanistan, a plaque was presented to Engine 53 Ladder 43, including the company patch worn by Murphy on his last mission.

This marks the first year that the Ronkonkoma Rotary Club will be making a formal 50 Miles for Murph send-off, although it will be the fifth year that Mr. Rodriguez makes his fifty mile trek to honor Michael, and he will be

Within the heart of Edith L. Slocum Elementary School’s courtyard, second- through fifthgrade students are gaining valuable skills as they work with the community to plant flowers and maintain a clean environment as part of the after-school Gardening Club.

The initiative, spearheaded by Connetquot Central School District Speech and Language pathologist Tina Rote and Slocum Elementary School kindergarten teacher Linda Pennington, teaches students about proper

planting techniques, how to maintain an ecofriendly environment and the life cycles of flowers – including perennials, black-eyed Susan’s and annuals - and vegetables such as cucumbers, squash and radishes. The students meet for five sessions in the fall and five sessions in the spring season, and work together to plant vegetables and flowers which will ultimately be taken home by families of the school community once they’re in full bloom.

The effort is supported by several outside individuals and organizations,

including but not limited to Slocum Elementary School PTA’s annual Chinese auction event.

PTA President Kimberly Ungro also contributed new picnic tables and accompanying umbrellas.

Additionally, the Connetquot Foundation for the Advancement of Children has also provided multiple grant funding, which has provided the gardens with a beautiful aluminum greenhouse and a newly installed irrigation system for maintaining healthy plants.

Middle Country Central School District recently honored the winners of its Operation Safe Stop poster contest, an initiative to raise community-wide awareness regarding bus safety.

Students were tasked with articulating the message that, “When the red lights are flashing, there’s no passing!” The winning posters portrayed traffic must come to a complete stop, in both

directions, when a bus’s lights are flashing—even on a divided highway or in a school parking lot.

The District, with student safety being top priority, is looking to convey the potential penalties for first time offenders that include a $250, or more, fine, five points on a license and possible jail time.

Every school in the district had the opportunity to have a winning poster.

Winning students were

presented certificates at a recent Board of Education meeting for their submissions.

The District’s Parent Teacher Associations also awarded the students with Tropical Smoothie gift cards. The posters will be on displays in the schools and throughout the community for the remainder of the school year.

Operation Safe Stop Middle Country Central School District’s Unity Drive Pre K/Kindergarten Center recently received a National Parent Teacher Association (PTA) award for the strong collaborative partnership between the school and the PTA. In honor of Teacher Appreciation Week, the National PTA introduced a nationwide #ThankATeacher

contest. Individuals across the country nominated thousands of teachers and PTAs for their selfless work in bringing students a wide range of educational opportunities.

Unity Drive Pre K/ Kindergarten Center was selected as one of three schools throughout the country for its constant efforts to work in unison with their PTA. In the

application, Ms. Christine Carrion and her students, were highlighted as exemplifying this strong partnership.

In recognition, the National PTA sent children’s book character Pete the Cat to visit Ms. Carrion’s class and presented 100 “I Can Read!” books to Unity Drive’s Pre-K and Kindergarten classes.

Honoring Our Veterans Suffolk County Legislator Tom Muratore’ s Memorial Day weekend was a busy one, attending several veterans’ parades, memorial ceremonies and a Honoring Our Heroes Veterans’ street fair in the

Fourth Legislative District.

The first parade was sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #4927 in Centereach, and a Memorial Day Street Fair held in Ronkonkoma on Sunday.

On Monday, Legislator Muratore attended the Ronkonkoma Veterans Day Memorial Ceremony at Raynor Park, followed by the Farmingville-Holtsville Memorial Day Parade and Memorial Ceremony.

DIGGING UP FUN - Kindergarten students at Connetquot Central School District’s Edith L. Slocum Elementary School were recently able to step inside the shoes of an archaeologist as they uncovered “artifacts” from their personal “dig sites” with assistance from a representative of the Long Island Maritime Museum. Working as a team, the students divided their dig sites into equal-sized quadrats and carefully removed artifacts utilizing miniature shovels, brushes and magnifying glasses. Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA) VicePresident Mr. Chris Dolce hosted a reception and awards ceremony for the winners of the 2017 annual essay contest. Held at the colorfully decorated library at Connetquot High School, Dolce and CTA committee members welcomed the selected students, their parents and the teachers “… who made a difference …” in their lives. Each of the six winning students received an attractive certificate, a copy of their winning essay, and a check for $500.

Speaking on behalf of CTA President Tony Felicio, Jr., Dolce congratulated the students and their parents for the outstanding essays they had submitted.

The topic for the essays was The Teacher who Made a Difference in My Life. Close to 200 essays were read and graded by a committee of CTA members from Connetquot HS, as well as

the middle and elementary schools.

Essays submitted by the following Connetquot students were selected as the six winning entries: Kenneth Haller (Mrs. Beth Owens), Diana Hocker (Mrs. Erica Dosch), Nilehil Bamarajpet (Mr. Ken Lehman), Meghan Forster (Ms. Debra Collier), Jacqueline Conlon (Mr. James Nagle) and Lea Romano (Mr. Michael Murphy).

The Connetquot Teacher’s Association has been increasingly involved in community events such as providing financial support of both boys’ & girls’ local sports teams, collecting clothing & snacks for the needy, raising funds for cancer research, as well the financial awards for graduating Connetquot students.

The latest Connetquot Teachers Association project has been partnering with the

Education & Assistance Corporation to provide healthy snacks, fruit drinks and bottled water for youngsters waiting for the parents at the Cohalan Court Complex in Central Islip.

Mr. Dolce personally congratulated each of the winning students, and their families. The kind words the students used to describe the impact Connetquot educators have had on their lives touched the hearts of the teachers being recognized.

Dolce also thanked the following CTA members who helped organize the evening’s award ceremony: Joanna Zalewski, Christine Dassler, Cathleen DiPeri, Ellen Perz and Robert Bachisin. Special thanks to Mrs. Cheryl Sosa for preparing her special recipe’ hazelnut flavored cookies for CTA Scholarship Night!

Lending a Hand

On May 20th, Councilwoman Jane Bonner traveled around Council District 2 during the 10th Annual Great Brookhaven Clean Up and met with different groups to lend a hand. More than 3500 people participated

at locations throughout Brookhaven Town.

The Great Brookhaven Clean Up was cosponsored by the Town of Brookhaven’s Department of Waste Management and Keep America Beautiful, Inc. It is part of a national

effort that draws nearly 2.5 million volunteers in more than 15,000 communities across America who came together to pick up litter, renew parks, and clean miles of roadway, rivers, lakes, and seashore.

Longwood Val & Sal Longwood High School is proud to announce Maciej Wlodek and Jaclyn Johnson as the Class of 2017 Valedictorian and Salutatorian, respectively.

Maciej is a recipient of the prestigious Rensselaer Medal, a National AP Scholar, and a finalist in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program.

Maciej serves as president of the Math Club and Quiz Bowl and is an active member of the Science Bowl, Science Olympiad, Chess Club, Protein Challenge and is a member of both the National Honor Society and the Foreign Language Honor Society. He placed in the top five in Suffolk County

and top 10 in the nation in the French National Contest. An accomplished musician, Maciej earned a perfect score for his AllState Solo for NYSSMA. He will attend Stony Brook University in the fall where he plans on pursuing a degree in Mathematics and Computer Science.

Salutatorian Jaclyn Johnson is an AP Scholar with Distinction and has achieved High Honor Roll throughout her high school career.

In addition to her academic accomplishments, Jaclyn is a member of the Quiz Bowl, Environmental Club, and Leo Club. To give back to her community,

Jaclyn volunteers at a local animal shelter and has participated in the Carmens River Cleanup.

Jaclyn will attend Stony Brook University where she will major in Psychology.

“Both Maciej and Jaclyn earned top honors in their class through their impressive and outstanding commitment to academic excellence,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Michael R. Lonergan. “They serve as excellent role models for their peers. We are extremely proud of their accomplishments and wish them well in their future endeavors.”

This Father’s Day, we celebrate all the men in our lives and the many men in Suffolk County who take on the role of Fresh Air father, as they open their hearts to New York City children through The Fresh Air Fund’s Friendly Towns Program for one to two weeks during the summer.

Each summer, thousands of children from New York City’s low-income communities visit volunteer host families in rural, suburban and small town communities along the East Coast and Southern Canada. Fresh Air children are given the opportunity to experience a world outside of New York City full of backyards to play in and lakes to swim in.

Fresh Air children are boys and girls, from seven to 18 years old, who live in New York City. Children who are

reinvited by host families may continue with The Fresh Air Fund through age 18 and can enjoy extended trips.

The Fresh Air Fund, an independent, not-for-profit agency, has provided free summer experiences to more than 1.8 million New York City children from lowincome communities since 1877.

Going Gold at NYSSMA Majors The Connetquot Central School District congratulates the fourthand fifth-grade students of Sycamore Avenue Elementary School’s chorus program for receiving a Gold rating for the third year in a row at the NYSSMA Majors competition held at Centereach High School.

No strangers to musical success, this is the fifth

year that the fourth- and fifth-grade chorus students have attended the NYSSMA Majors, as they performed three songs for two judges and were rewarded with constructive criticism to help them improve their vocal and choral singing technique.

Additionally, the judges complimented the chorus on their hard work, beautiful tone and attention to details.

Edward J. Bosti Elementary School teacher Joanna Zalewski recently invited students to volunteer to have their hair trimmed in order to assist women and girls suffering from hair loss due to cancer treatments.

With assistance from representatives of Bayport’s Vamp Hair Studio, the students’ hair donations will go toward Pantene Beautiful Lengths, a program that provides real-hair wigs for women who suffer hair loss as a

result of cancer treatment.

Pantene uses hair provided by thoughtful volunteers, and works with HairUWear and the American Cancer Society, to transform the donations into the highestquality, real-hair wigs.

Students Arianna Chechakos, Ava Catania, sisters Mae Noone and Kyra Noone, Hailey Priemer and Mrs. Zaleski met at the school gymnasium to demonstrate their support for the program. Each student had their hair measured, secured into ponytails and then watched as the Vamp stylists worked their magic. Additionally, the students’ parents were on hand to watch the experience and share this important moment with them.
