Two-hundred girls and families from 34 states, Canada and England will be in attendance as Curvy Girls Scoliosis Support hold their second biannual Convention on June 29th- July 1st, on Long Island. Founded in 2006 by then-13 yearold Smithtown, resident Leah Stoltz, Curvy Girls has successfully engaged hundreds of young girls and families in mutual support and advocacy activities through the experience of scoliosis. Scoliosis is the lateral bending and twisting of the spine that, when progressed, causes body deformities and compromises internal organs. It affects seven million people in the U.S. with a diagnosis most commonly occurring in pre-adolescence. The disease shows progression ten times more frequently in girls than boys. Curvy Girls groups provide peer-to-peer and family-

to-family support and information. Now 21 and graduating from American University with a degree in business and marketing, Leah helped her group to go global after she was featured on the first TeenNick HALO Awards – Helping And Leading Others – in 2009. Hosted by entertainer Nick Cannon, the show engages celebrities to honor teens who give back to their community while overcoming hardship. Leah was honored by singer/actor Justin Timberlake. With the help of this exposure, Curvy Girls has connected nearly three thousand affected girls through group meetings and social media., including 62 operating self-help groups - run by teens - that also operate in Brazil, Spain, and Australia. Curvy Girls is appreciative to their major Sponsor EOS Imaging for making it possible for girls

3

The Power Of One from around the world to be able to attend. Additional sponsors include Scoliosis Research Society, Long Island Spine Specialists, Bay Orthopedics, FOCOS (Foundation of Orthopedics and Complex Spine), Hanger Orthotics, and Transgenomic. The Convention will afford Curvy Girls the opportunity to celebrate the leadership and accomplishments of girls around the world as well as providing girls and families with emerging scientific and health information and the necessary skills to meet the distinct physical, social, and psychological challenges of this disease. Leah’s commitment to Curvy Girls goes beyond her own scoliosis, which was corrected with surgery 6 years ago. “I never want anyone to feel the way I did - alone and scared - so I am committed to empowering Curvy Girls around the world to know they are not alone.”

You marvel at the earthly colors Nature in its finest hour Calls to you in all its splendor. Time is not your ally. Your eyes behold the orange Glow of radiance and light. Your ears strain to hear The ripple of the ocean.

The Shootout for Soldiers, a 24-hour lacrosse game benefiting wounded American military members that has raised more than $250,000 since its inception, will expand to a second location in Long Island on July 24th and 25th. The event, which was originally started by a group of high school students, will hold its third annual fundraising game in the Baltimore area this June. The effort has expanded dramatically each year, with more than 2,000 participants and 10,500 attendees taking part in the 2013 charitable event. The expansion to Long Island, according to organizers, represents the first expansion leg in a program anticipated to spread throughout the country.

People interested in participating in the 2014 event can register as a team or as an individual by visiting www. ShootoutForSoldiers. com. The games are open to both male and female participants with no age restrictions and will be held at the Field of Dreams Park in Massapequa, New York. The cost to participate per individual is $20.00. “We have received incredible interest from more than sixty different cities across the country asking us to expand the event into their region,” explained Tyler Steinhardt, Founder and Director of Shootout for Soldiers. “Based on the combination of an incredibly active and organized lacrosse community, as well as an impassioned group of supporters of our nation’s veterans, expanding to Long Island was the natural fit. We’re extremely fortunate to work with such an incredible team in the area and are excited to continue to support our nation’s heroes through the sport of lacrosse.” Steinhardt is taking a leave of absence from his studies at American University to concentrate his full-time efforts into expanding and developing the Shootout for Soldiers. Among the initial benefits of this was adding the Army Ranger Lead the Way Fund,

Semper Fi Fund and Gary Sinise Foundation into the partnership mix. The common mission of all four organizations is to provide financial, physical and emotional support or services to individuals that have dedicated their lives to the United States military. “We are extremely proud that, with an allvolunteer team, Shootout

for Soldiers has spent less than one percent of the total fundraising dollars on expenses to organize and produce the games,” Steinhardt explained. Both the Baltimore event, to be held at the McDonogh School in Owings Mills, Maryland and the Long Island event, scheduled for the Field of Dreams Park in

Hurricane Sandy has finally ended. People are returning to Fire Island slowly, but steadily. Only time will tell, but it looks as if we are experiencing a return to normalcy. Dolphins can already be seen swimming off the beach, and they are plentiful. As we kick off the summer, it is important to remember that Fire Island is not just a place to have a fun weekend; for many, like myself, Fire Island is the place that we call home. It is a place where memories have been formed. Each year, we see drunk people and other party animals who do

A Return To Summer On The Shore

With every passing day, it becomes clearer that summer is almost in full swing. The beaches are filling with tourists, and the ferries are packed! As a strong Memorial Day Weekend predicted, this summer is turning out to be very busy. It is my fifth summer working at Maguire’s Bayfront Restaurant in Ocean Beach. My first few shifts of the summer have been crazier than in years prior. We are already seeing a rush of people eager to take part in the festivities associated with a warm summer. Thus far, it seems as if the lull created by

ADMINISTRATION Teri Tinkler, Laura Goodheart

not take consideration for the environment or Fire Island as a whole. As an advocate for nature preservation, this truly saddens me. The state of both our beaches and our infrastructure has worsened in the past few years. Even though I’m just a kid, these changes are pretty obvious. Everywhere you look, degradation is found. As you head to the beach this summer, remember to pick up your garbage and protect wildlife. This will ensure that we will have great summers every year.

Fixing The System By: Jamie Lynn Ryan There is a video making its rounds on the social media circuit, showcasing what can only be described as the sorry state of our education system. One after another, various beachgoers were interviewed on the shores of our very own Jones Beach over this past Memorial Day weekend, asked questions ranging from “Who did we fight in the Revolutionary War?” to “What side of the Civil War was Abraham Lincoln associated with?” to “What country attacked us at Pearl Harbor?” The answers? Some of the best gems were “France” (our opponents in the War for Independence), “The South” (50/50 shot, people) and every nation from “China” to “Russia” to “Korea” to, you

guessed it, “France.” So much for the “date which will live in infamy,” right? And all this was to determine who, if anyone, could explain why we began commemorating Memorial Day in the first place. Judging by the aforementioned answers, not too many history buffs among us. The best part was that most, if not all, of the interviewees were clearly high school or college age, leading to the question: what exactly are they learning in school these days? Sure, I can’t tell you the details of every historical event which occurred over the course of the last several centuries, but the basics? Those are pretty hard to forget. And when I was actually in school, studying for exams every other week and writing term papers on such topics? It would have been difficult not to retain at least something, anything.

It’s a sad state of affairs when you are blissfully ignorant of your own nation’s battle for independence and how you came to enjoy such freedoms as frolicking on the beach on a “holiday” weekend, having no clue how such occasion came into fruition. Sure it’s funny and entertaining to watch as you’re scrolling through the Facebook newsfeed; but when you take a step back and realize that these are the people with whom you coexist on a daily basis, some from your own generation, it becomes pretty disconcerting. I wonder how many of these individuals grabbed their smartphones and Googled the answers following their failed interviews. For those keeping score at home: 1.) Britain, 2.) North and 3.) Japan. They may want to grab a history book and fill in the rest.

Overcoming Challenges

Five students of the graduating class at St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School are the proud recipients of Mary Grant Award Scholarships. Each student received a $1,000 scholarship after they submitted an essay about a time they overcame a serious disappointment, challenge or adversity and how that experience has affected them in a positive way. Mary Corcoran, the award’s namesake, was a firm believer in the mission of Catholic Education and that every child should have an opportunity to be

educated in a community where Catholic values are taught and lived. Mary was a true role model for her “never give up” mentality and her positive attitude. She believed, life is not about what is given to you, but what you make of it. The five SJB Student recipients are: • Kevin De Maille, Jr. of Centereach • Olivia O’Keefe of Lindenhurst • Jaclyn Hahn of Bay Shore • Liam Doughty of Central Islip • John DeSio of Coram

This grant is being offered through the Make It Count Foundation, which serves as a catalyst for sustainable change within the lives of children, youth and those in need by ensuring that their fundamental health, housing and educational needs are met. Principal Nan Doherty stated, “We are truly grateful to Tom Corcoran and the Make It Count Foundation for awarding these grants to our students and for continuing Mary’s legacy. We are very proud of each of these students and wish them the very best for the future.”

Brookhaven Supervisor Ed Romaine announced today that Paul DeChance has received a statewide recognition for his work as the Town’s Zoning Board of Appeals Chairman. DeChance received the NYPF David Allee Award for an Outstanding ZBA Chair at the recent New York Planning Federation’s 76th Annual Planning & Zoning Conference in Saratoga Springs. The Supervisor honored Mr. DeChance with a proclamation at

the May 22nd Town Board meeting. “Paul DeChance is a dedicated public servant who treats his position as Chair of the Town’s ZBA as a second fulltime responsibility,” said Supervisor Romaine. “He works tirelessly on behalf of the residents of Brookhaven to ensure that the ZBA makes reasoned, responsible land use decisions, and runs his department in an effective and efficient manner. This

is an honor that is truly well deserved.” DeChance, a Miller Place resident, has served on the ZBA for 11 years, and as its chair for the past five years. He was commended for his dedication and commitment to his role as ZBA chairman, the time he spends hearing both staff and office concerns, and for his ability to conduct meetings “in a pleasant, even-tempered manner.”

Fire Island Dance Festival Continued From 21 decades, the fight is far from over. This summer we’ll celebrate our collective achievements knowing that our expanded mission has allowed us to grow, while ensuring that those we originally set out to help, those living with HIV/ AIDS, continue to receive the lifesaving assistance they need.” Through their generous support, Fire Island Dance Festival attendees have

helped ensure that the most vulnerable among us receive lifesaving medications and health care, nutritious meals, counseling and emergency financial assistance. The 20th anniversary celebration kicks off with the Friday night Leadership Event, an intimate evening reserved for Leadership Supporters. The excitement continues throughout the weekend with three Fire Island Dance Festival

performances: the opening performance on Saturday, July 19th at 5 p.m. (open bar starting at 4 p.m.); sunset performance on Saturday, July 19th at 7 p.m. (open bar following); and closing performance on Sunday, July 20th at 5 p.m. (open bar following). Each performance features acclaimed and emerging dancers and dance companies. Leadership Supporters enjoy an elevated festival experience including

the Leadership Event with cocktails on Friday, highly coveted tickets to the sunset performance on Saturday or priority seating at either 5 p.m. performance and prominent recognition in the harbor and throughout the Pines. Beginning May 24th, tickets also will be available in person on weekends in the Fire Island Pines Harbor. Leadership tickets start at $325. Individual tickets for the 5 p.m.

performances are $125. Dancers Responding to AIDS, founded in 1991 by former Paul Taylor Dance Company members Denise Roberts Hurlin and Hernando Cortez, relies on the extraordinary compassion and efforts of the performing arts community to fund a safety net of social services for those in need. As a program of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, DRA supports more than 450 AIDS and family

service organizations nationwide as well as the essential programs of The Actors Fund, including the HIV/AIDS Initiative and The Dancers’ Resource. For more information, please visit Dancers Responding to AIDS at dradance.org, like us on Facebook at facebook. com/DRAdance, follow us on Twitter at twitter.com/ DRAdance and watch us on YouTube at youtube. com/DRAdance.
