Moriches Field Brewing Company received $18,750 to revitalize an empty downtown space.

(Cheers to that.)

Revitalization grants are just one of the ways we help businesses on Long Island and in the Rockaways. For Moriches Field Brewing Company, a grant from our economic development program was a perfect fit to help them renovate a previously vacant property. A discount through our Vacant Space Revival Program saved them more than $4,000 on their electric bills, and rebates for upgrading to LED lighting are keeping them saving month after month.

Helping revitalize our Island, one business at a time, is something we’re proud to be part of and something definitely worth celebrating.

Interesting Facts About Memorial Day

Interesting facts about Memorial Each year on the last Monday of May, Americans celebrate Memorial Day. Memorial Day is a federal holiday that honors and mourns American military personnel who died while performing their duties in service to the United States Armed Forces. Memorial Day has a rich history and one that’s worth revisiting as the nation prepares to honor the sacrifices made by its military personnel over the centuries.

influenced General John A. Logan. In 1868, General Logan, a Civil War veteran who was then serving as commander-in-chief of a group of Union veterans, ordered the decoration of Union graves with flowers on May 30. The day would ultimately be known as “Memorial Day.”

• Freed slaves played a role in the establishment of Memorial Day. The American Civil War is the deadliest military conflict in American history, as the Union and the Confederacy each suffered more than 800,000 casualties by the time the war ended in 1865. According to History.com, as the war drew to a close, hundreds of Union soldiers who were being held as prisoners of war died and were buried in a mass grave in a Confederate prison camp in South Carolina. After the Confederate surrender, more than 1,000 now-freed slaves honored those recently deceased Union soldiers during a ceremony where they sang hymns and distributed flowers. The ceremony was dedicated to the fallen soldiers and served as a precursor to what is now celebrated as Memorial Day.

• Confederate soldiers were honored, too. Confederate losses during the Civil War outnumbered Union losses, and those losses were not forgotten by Southerners who survived the war. History.com notes that, in 1866, the Georgiabased Ladies Memorial Association, one of many similar organizations to arise in the aftermath of the war, pushed for a day to honor fallen Confederate soldiers. In fact, these efforts are believed to have

• It took a long time for Memorial Day to become a federal holiday. Despite tracing its origins to the immediate aftermath of the Civil War, Memorial Day did not become an official federal holiday until 1971, more than a century after the war ended. This is the same year the holiday was officially designated as taking place on the last Monday in May. The designation has periodically drawn the ire of veterans and military supporters who suggest it is now more widely seen as the unofficial beginning of summer and not a day in which the sacrifices of fallen U.S. soldiers are honored to the extent that they should be.

• Debate exists about which town has the longest history of celebrating Memorial Day. A handful of towns claim to be the first celebrants of Memorial Day. That debate figures to continue in perpetuity, but History.com notes that Waterloo, New York, was officially recognized by U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson as the birthplace of Memorial Day in 1966. Doylestown, Pennsylvania, and Rochester, Wisconsin, are some other towns that claim to have celebrated Memorial Day since the mid-1860s.

Memorial Day has a rich history that highlights the importance of honoring the men and women who have given their lives while in service of the United States military.

Suffolk Awarded $2 Million Navy Workforce Training Grant To Support Submarine Operations

The United States Navy’s Submarine Industrial Base has awarded Suffolk County Community College’s Advanced Manufacturing and Workforce Development program $2 million over five years to recruit and train the next generation of welders and Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Machine operators in support of the mission of one Columbia Class and two Virginia Class submarines.

Her Songs Broke Every Record, Her Story Broke Every Barrier

She was a girl from Boston with a voice from heaven, who shot through the stars from gospel choir to dance floor diva. What the world didn’t know was how Donna Summer risked it all to break through barriers, becoming the icon of an era and the inspiration for every music diva who followed. With a score featuring more than 20 of Summer’s classic hits including “Love to Love You Baby,” “Bad Girls” and “Hot Stuff,” this electric experience is a moving tribute to the voice of a generation.

The submarine industrial base is the United States’ unique and highly specialized workforce and manufacturing base which supports the skills and technology needed to design, build, repair and

provide support for the Navy’s submarines. The Navy said there are five industrial base pipelines in the United States and estimates more than 130,000 new workforce personnel program-wide will be needed between now and 2030 to fulfill its mission. Long Island is home to one of the densest pockets of manufacturers for the program.

The $2 million in scholarships will cover the full tuition of 100 students per year -- a total of 250 welders and 250 CNC Machine Operators over the fiveyear life of the program -- that will help local employers in the defense manufacturing pipeline fill a growing need

for skilled workers, according to Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Edward Bonahue, who said the program will launch in the fall of this year.

“This investment in our welding and manufacturing certificates will allow us to get more trainees into the workforce more quickly,” Bonahue said. “The need for highly trained technicians in the defense manufacturing pipeline is a national priority, and we’re proud that the Navy and the Submarine Industrial Base recognize the critical role Suffolk’s workforce programs play in meeting that need,” Bonahue said.

Sachem High School East Announces Valedictorian And Salutatorian

Sachem High School

East is proud to announce Siddharth Sheth as its Class of 2023 valedictorian and Jada Drew as its salutatorian. Sheth is a well-rounded student who shines in and out of the classroom. His academic excellence has led to his leadership in several honor societies including the Science National Honor Society and National English Honor Society, both of which he serves as president. Most recently, Sheth was named a National Merit Scholarship Program finalist for his achievement on the Preliminary SAT. Additionally, Sheth is the president of the Sachem East DECA chapter, where he prepared longterm competition curricula, organized meetings of dozens of members and developed successful fundraising initiatives.

Outside of the classroom, Sheth serves as a Leading

Petty Officer with the United States Naval Sea Cadets Corps. In this role, he coordinated monthly drills and trained other cadets.

Throughout all four years of high school, Sheth was a member of the winter track and field team. He has also dedicated his time volunteering to several local organizations including the Community Solidarity Food Share and with Stony Brook Orthopedic Associates.

Salutatorian Jada Drew is a highly involved member of the Sachem High School East community. She currently serves as the class government president, planning events for the student body while assisting in fundraising needs. She has served as an officer with the class government throughout her time in high school. Drew is an excellent student and has excelled in the 13 Advanced Placement

classes she has taken. She is set to graduate with an AP Capstone Diploma and was named an AP Scholar with Distinction. Additionally, Drew is the vice president of the Science National Honor Society, vice president of the National English Honor Society and secretary of the National Honor Society. All while maintaining high academics, Drew spends her time outside of school volunteering at local senior living facilities.

This fall, Sheth will be attending the Boston University Honors Program to study biomedical engineering and Drew will be part of the Stony Brook University Honors Program where she will continue her passion for biology. The district wishes them the best of luck in their future endeavors!
