with Jamie Lynn Ryan This week, I thought I’d throw it back to a classic from the archives, a column which received quite a bit of positive feedback leading up to last year’s Memorial Day. Reflecting on past traditions always tends to get the creative juices flowing, so to speak, and memories of family gatherings are no exception…

There are many Memorial Day weekend traditions that people enjoy. Most of them tend to involve barbecues and beaches, bathing suits and sunbathing.

Few take the time to truly appreciate the meaning of the holiday itself.

I’ve written in the past of attending the annual service which takes place at Calverton National Cemetery, a mere two hours of the weekend designated to pay respects to those who have come before us and sacrificed so much for this nation. This brought to mind another, perhaps less traditional, “ceremony” which my grandfather and great uncle

used to enact each Memorial Day, and then again at Labor Day. Both veterans themselves, they had held on to their service uniforms and, ill-fitting as they were, would dig them out and don bits and pieces of them each year to take part in the annual “flag raising” in my grandfather’s backyard. For as long as I can remember, there stood a flagpole at one end of the lush green lawn, and from that pole hung Old Glory, proudly waving in the wind, for the entire summer.

My grandfather and uncle would unfurl this flag each May and, with a mix of reverence and humor as they paraded in their snug jackets and trousers, would carefully raise it – and then, salute proudly. Come September, this same succession of events would take place in reverse, and the flag would be carefully stored away for another season.

As a child, I can’t say I truly understood what was going on, nor did I appreciate the significance of the ordeal. Sure, there was a bit of tongue-in-

cheek humor to go along with the solemnity; but make no mistake; they took it all very seriously. Thankfully, there are pictures from a few of these ceremonies… along with the memories to last a lifetime.

Last summer, as my grandparents’ house stood empty for the first time in 56 years, a “For Sale” sign staked on the front lawn, the family gathered one late spring afternoon to begin the process of going through belongings.

The ceremonies of days gone by a distant memory at this point, a somewhat tattered flag still hung from the pole. Inspired, the “children” decided to raise a brand new flag, one last time, in honor of my grandfather, and all the wonderful summers spent in that backyard.

As for the old flag, the last one my grandfather had hung, I kept it. And each time I drive by the old house, now filled with a new couple just beginning their lives, I look to see if the old flagpole still stands. It does, and the flag remains.

The Boy Scouts of America Suffolk County Council have announced their partnering with Trinity Solar, a leader in solar installations and services on Long Island, Queens and Brooklyn, through its Stewardship Program which will raise funds for underserved youths to participate in scouting programs as part of the Scoutreach Program over the next 12 months.

Trinity Solar will donate $100 to the Suffolk County Council for every qualified appointment that is scheduled through this program. When a homeowner decides to have a solar energy system installed, Trinity Solar will donate $1,000 to the Suffolk County Council Scoutreach Program.

“Trinity Solar a dedicated family-owned and operated company focused on giving back to the communities in which we do business.

We feel this is essential for our success. Trinity Solar’s Stewardship Program will raise funds for important scouting initiatives and at the same time assist Long Island

residents go green and save money on their energy bills,” said Michael Passentino, Vice President of Business Development at Trinity Solar.

Solar energy provides home owners across Long Island with the ability to save significantly on the cost of their electricity and to aid the environment by reducing the use and dependence on fossil fuels. Installing a solar system is an important decision as well as a smart investment.

The Suffolk County Council of Boy Scouts Stewardship Program will provide funding for 50 youths currently enrolled in the Scoutreach Program in three local communities. The funds will provide uniforms, program materials, leadership, camping and outdoor experiences along with a leadership development program that will impact their lives for years to come.

The funding will also enable the Council to expand the program to reach more young people who would benefit by being part of scouting.

Lisa Gatti is the CEO & Founder of PalO-Mine Equestrian, Inc., a comprehensive therapeutic equine program that uses horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for individuals with disabilities and for other vulnerable populations. Through persistence, hard work and a passion to serve others, Lisa opened Pal-O-Mine in 1995 as a 501(C)(3) non-profit.

Pal-O-Mine grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week - and they continue to grow today!

Individuals of all ages are welcome to take part in the programs they offer. They operate with five full-time employees, 35 independent contractors and 80 volunteers a week. Volunteers are trained to help seniors living in nursing homes or assisted living facilities understand their rights and help them advocate for themselves. Lastly, volunteers are needed for their Health Insurance Counseling Program. Volunteers inform seniors about Medicare and healthcare options to achieve a higher quality of life. Suffolk County Legislator and Suffolk County Child Care Commission Chairperson Monica R. Martinez provided the opening remarks for the Legislative Summit, which featured a keynote address by New York State Assemblywoman Ellen C. Jaffee, 97th Assembly District.

As chair of the Committee on Children and Families, Assemblywoman Jaffee’s priorities include ensuring that every family has access to safe, high-quality, affordable child care, early childhood education, the well-being of children and youth in foster and kinship care and securing funds so that communities

have the resources, services and programs they need to support our most vulnerable.

The Summit was highlighted by distinguished panelists: U.S. Congressman Peter King, New York State Senator Phil Boyle, New York State Assemblywoman Kimberly Jean-Pierre, Suffolk County Legislator Kara Hahn and Suffolk County Legislator Leslie Kennedy who responded to a series of questions from Legislator Martinez and audience members.

Moving Forward Although there have been many books and articles written about the power of positive thinking, new findings about its importance in daily living are always surfacing. The old saying, “If life gives you lemons, make lemonade,” still holds true more than ever.

We begin this update with a look at how attitudes are formed. To start, a stimulus enters your consciousness and ends with a response. However, in between the stimuli and response is what I like to call “the buffer zone,” where your brain makes a split-second decision whether to act favorably on the stimuli (hence the response will be more favorable), or the reverse will be true. If you are like most people, this type of interaction occurs with high frequency daily.

In a broad sense, positive thinking is the carrier which turns negative thoughts into positive ones. Some examples of its many benefits include: giving you a pleasant feeling of high esteem, coupled with a sense of self-fulfillment. This can be enough to really make a person’s day without him/her realizing what caused it!

Further, it can enhance your level of satisfaction and feeling of well-being. In many cases, this effect can automatically be blended with the above paragraph on high esteem and self-fulfillment.

By giving well-deserved thanks to others whom you come in contact with, both you and the other person have the potential to feel better. The key here is that it must be based on a factual, pleasant event. It cannot be accomplished with false praise.

If this occurs, you will be looking at a person who feels good throughout the day and never gives a thought to the cause. Have you witnessed this in another person? Better yet, has it ever happened to you?

Now, let’s bring all of this into the world of everyday living. Wouldn’t it be nice to learn some tips on how to turn a negative into a positive?

The Child Care Council of Suffolk (CCCS) was pleased to participate in the Child Care in a Time of Suburban Fiscal Crisis Legislative Summit, which was presented by the Suffolk County Child Care Commission at Suffolk County Community College, Brentwood, New York. CCCS Associate Executive Director Jennifer Rojas presented an update on the “Federal/ State Budget and Economic Implications” as well as moderated a Facilitated Conversation focusing on: • What are the next steps for child care?

Response: If this is happening to you, quickly take several deep breaths, slow down and wave that person to enter his/ her car in front of yours. In most cases, the person will give you a friendly wave and smile - and you will feel good about it too!

Situation: You are walking behind an elderly person who is walking at a very slow pace, and the green light is about to turn red. Although she is in the proper crossing lane, she is in danger of being hit by an aggressive driver.

Response: Walk rapidly until you are in front of her and gently suggest that you both walk faster to cross safely to the other side. If necessary (and with her permission), gently take her arm and proceed.

Special Tip I have used the following method for many years with much success, and I now will pass it on to you. It consists of two simple parts: Part #1: Shortly before you fall asleep, think of all the good things you

could accomplish during the next day.

Concentrate for a few moments on each one you have selected. What most people don’t realize is that, while you sleep, your subconscious takes over and “stores it” for the next day!

Part #2: Upon waking (and continuing) throughout your early morning routine before breakfast, think of some good things you could do today, and don’t forget to include yourself if appropriate.

Now, here’s the really interesting part; in most cases, this list will come easily to you. Do you know why? It’s because your subconscious worked most of the night to develop this for you!

May I ask a favor for any of my readers who might be doubtful about this? Please give it a try. It will take a bit of practice to perfect this technique, but keep going.

The results you obtain will be well worth the effort.

Now, you are ready to move forward and give it a try. Remember to be patient with the process – it will pay you back in many ways. ~ Peace ~

The American Heart Association kick off cocktail party for the Hamptons Heart Ball was held on Thursday, May 10th and was hosted by event honorees Audrey and Martin Gruss in their NYC home.

Honor Flight Long Island

veterans spent the entire day in Washington DC, visiting sites including the World War II and Korean War Memorials, as well as The Women in Military Service for America Memorial, before returning to Islip long after taps would have played. The complimentary trip was a small tribute to those from Long Island that served our nation in war.

“Your country said that it needed you, and you said, ‘Yes, I will go,’” the 50 veterans were told by Bill Jones, the President of Honor Flight Long Island.

“You had never been out of your hometown, yet you found yourselves in places you’d never heard of. At a time of your lives when you should have been concerned with simple things…your high school prom, maybe applying to college…maybe settling down and starting a family of your own…you,

as ordinary citizens were asked to put on a uniform in service to your country.

I thank you for answering the call to duty and the privilege of escorting you to yourmemorial.”

Jones was joined by 50+ volunteers who served as escorts for each of the veterans. After the morning began with the Naval Sea Cadets’ Honor Guard ceremony (the youths were from the Theodore Roosevelt Division based in East Moriches), the veterans were whisked off on their flight to tour DC sights. Upon return to Islip MacArthur Airport, there was a crowd of more than 200 waiting, and again the Theodore Roosevelt Division Naval Sea Cadets were in formation welcoming the veterans back to Long Island soil, with many a misty eye in the airport.

When Admiral Halsey lost three destroyers and 100 aircraft to a typhoon, Cartoski flew Corsairs and Hell Cats from dawn to dusk straight off factory lines to California so they could be shipped to the war zone.

Sgt. Tess Pierce Garber, from Jericho, was a WWII teletype operator in the Marine Signal Corps.

Among the secret daily reports she saw from the battlefield was one with terrible news – it carried the name of the only son of her Mom’s friend; he’d been killed in action.

Gennaro Iorio, from Bellmore, was an MD in the US Army Medical Corps in WWII, assigned to hospitals in France and Germany, and he assisted the Chaplain in travels to comfort the injured.

George Israel, of Long Beach, was an executive officer aboard a Navy ship in the Korean War that was caught in a typhoon with 200 mph winds and ship rolls of 53 degrees!

Army veteran Charles Ludrosky, of Wantagh, used a poncho to cover his fox hole as rains poured down upon him on the front lines in the Korean War. He received three Bronze Stars.

Val Marino was a fighter pilot with the Air Force flying daily missions against Russian MIGs in Korea. He was awarded

the Distinguished Flying Cross for completing an amazing 125 missions and also awarded a Silver Star!

He later became a research test pilot, and last year was appointed to a Presidential Advisory Board due to his North Korean experiences.

Robert Anziano of Islip Terrace joined the Navy, havingbeen in a junior Navy program akin to the Naval Sea Cadets.As an instrument technician at a Naval Air Station, he saluted Tyrone Power every morning – a swashbuckling film star who was also in uniform.

Coast Guard veteran William O’Brien, of Massapequa Park, boarded foreign vessels in NY waters and was schooled by the Atomic Energy Commission in the use of radioactive detectors.

The Honor Guard of theTheodore Roosevelt Division of the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps includes cadets ages 13 to 18. The cadets train out of the U.S. Coast Guard Station in East Morichesand hail from all over Suffolk County. The Naval Sea Cadet program focuses on developing cadets’ abilities in seamanship, instilling in cadets the virtues of good citizenship, moral principles and public service, and the program inspires young men and women to reach their fullest potential.

It was an unforgettable scene at Islip MacArthur Airport this past weekend as teenage U.S. Naval Sea Cadets lined up at 6 a.m. in Honor Guard formation to help send off 50 World War II and Korean War veterans on a memorial trip to Washington DC. The Honor Guard carried the American flag that these veterans had fought so hard to defend, as well as flags representing each service branch of the U.S. military with which the veterans had served – the Army, Air Force, Navy, Marines and Coast Guard. The veterans hailed from villages and towns all over Nassau and Suffolk Counties, with the war stories they shared for this Honor Flightproviding a glimpse into the type of honorable duties performed by the 40,000+ veterans that reside on Long Island.

Honor Flight: Army Air Force mechanic and gunner Stanley Pollack, of Wading River, served aboard B-29 bombers in the Pacific Theater in WWII. “Flying through anti-aircraft was the most harrowing as the enemy shot shells at us in puffs and flak attacks.”

Navy Yeoman Peter Pascale, of Ridge, was on a ship one-half mile out from the invasion of Iwo Jima and was in range of the USS Indianapolis when it sunk following a secret mission that directly contributed to the end of WWII. Marine Corps rifleman Emanuel Poretta remembered a “crazy thing” in Korea. He was taking a shower from a truck with hot water. “A red alert sounded, and I found my rifle, helmet and ammo belt. No clothes!”

Poretta was left to hand out supplies in his birthday suit.

Richard Cardone of Farmingdale was a Navy Damage Controlman during the Korean War. When a terrible accident happened aboard ship, he saved the lives of two trapped men, carrying the unconscious men to safety.

“All my training in the Navy really prepared me for it.”

Sharpening Skills In an effort to both enhance and develop new linguistic skills, students enrolled in Donna Giambruno’s Italian classes at Ronkonkoma Middle School recently met with students in the Connetquot Central School District C-Quest program to give them a lesson on the language.

During their visit, the middle schoolers engaged the C-Quest students in a series of activities designed to teach them several

Italian words, including how to say numbers, weather patterns, conversation etiquette, adjectives and the proper pronunciations of traditional Italian dishes.

The younger students highly enjoyed themselves as they took part in these exercises, and were even granted the opportunity to put their skills to the test as they wrote down some of their favorite hobbies down on a worksheet utilizing the Italian words

they learned.

With help from C-Quest advisers Lisa Manzo and Kevin Keane, the district’s C-Quest program is dedicated to enhancing the educational experience of fourth- and fifth-grade students. Based at Edward J. Bosti Elementary School, the C-Quest program services the needs of approximately 140 students throughout the district.

Family STEAM Night Sachem Central School District parents marveled at countless crafty creations made by students during Merrimac Elementary School’s inaugural Family STEAM Night on April 19th.

The family event served as an opportunity for each grade level to showcase a specific classroom project that students participated in as part of STEAM instruction. First-graders created kites, secondgraders crafted musical

instruments, third-graders made recycled paper, fourth-graders constructed robots from recycled materials and fifth-grade students showed off their Ozobot Olympic course.

Throughout the building, a number of exciting activities were taking place for families to enjoy. Sachem Aftershock robotics team towed a wagon with one of their past robots, the Sachem Public Library provided STEAM activities for

families to take part in and the art room was dedicated to design and construction challenges with Legos.

In addition to the night’s festivities, the winner of the fifth-grade science fair was announced. Nicholas Prosa and his project that determined if hand dryers or paper towels are a healthier hand drying option will be moving on to the science fair at Brookhaven National Laboratory on May 5th.

The Middle Country Central School District (MCCSD) recently announced that Anthony Roman from Centereach High School and Logan Ortiz from Newfield High School are the Class of 2018 valedictorians, and Olivia Zhu from Centereach High School and Diogo Martins from Newfield High School are the District’s salutatorians. Throughout their four years in their respective high schools, these students excelled academically, became active community leaders and participated in countless extracurricular activities.

Danielle will attend the University of Notre Dame in the fall where she will play basketball for the “Fighting Irish.”

Newfield High School valedictorian Logan Ortiz is set to graduate in June with potentially more than 40 college credits due to his hard work and dedication to his studies.

He is often described as an exceptionally intellectual student, holding an unweighted 98.7 GPA. He is active in all things Newfield - participating in student government, National Honor Society and Tri-M Honor Society, as well as serving as captain of the Mock Trial Team, president of the Video Club and captain of the golf team. Logan is set to attend Georgetown University next fall to study political science, with his sights set on law school and elected office.

Olivia Zhu, this year’s salutatorian of Centereach High School, has seen some outstanding academic accolades throughout her time in

high school, all while maintaining a rigorous course schedule. Olivia will have completed no less than 11 AP courses and two college level courses upon graduation, earning her the recognition of National AP Scholar with Distinction from the College Board. Olivia is a member of the National Honor Society, Tri-M Honor Society, Math Team and Science Olympiad. She has also been a member of the varsity tennis team since the eighth grade - serving as captain and earning the distinction of Most Valuable Player from her coach over the past two seasons. Olivia will be attending Cornell University to study computer science and engineering.

Newfield High School’s salutatorian, Diogo Martins, has an unweighted 98 GPA and has the potential to graduate with more than 45 college credits. Diogo has been praised by his teachers and peers as a born leader - serving in leadership roles in the Thespian Honor Society, World Languages Honor Society and National Honor Society. He has played a consistent role in almost every fundraising event in Newfield during his four years, a testament to his commitment to giving back to his community.

Diogo will be attending Villanova University in the fall and intends to major in finance.

In Honor Of On May 26th, the Village of Islandia will have its annual Memorial Day ceremony, starting at 10 a.m. The ceremony will take place at the Veterans Memorial Triangle, located at the corner of Old Nichols Road and Johnson Avenue.

Mayor Allan M. Dorman, a former Marine and a Vietnam War veteran,

will be joined by village trustees, members of the Col. Francis S. Midura Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #12144 and local elected officials to recognize the local war veterans in attendance and to remember those who gave their lives for our country. Ceremonial wreaths will be placed at

the site of the memorial to honor the fallen soldiers.

Members of the Lakeland and Central Islip Fire Departments will also be in attendance.

Healthy ways to relieve stress throughout the day

S

tress affects people from all walks of life, and the causes of stress are as varied as the people it afflicts.

In its 2017 Stress in AmericaTM survey, the American Psychological Association found that the three most common sources of stress were the future of the nation (63 percent), money (62 percent) and work (61 percent).

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, routine stress that becomes chronic can result in a host of negative side effects. Such stress can suppress the immune system, disrupt digestion and have an adverse effect on sleep. But men and women who feel stressed at the end of each day need not resign themselves to sleepless nights and/or weakened immune systems. A proactive approach to alleviating stress during the day can help men and women reduce their stress levels and avoid the negative side effects associated with chronic stress.

Walk away. The APA notes that taking a break from a stressor is one of a handful of healthy techniques that research has indicated is a successful way to reduce stress, both in the short- and long-term.

If a project at work is proving especially stressful, step away for a short period of time to do something else, whether it’s to go for a brief walk or converse with a coworker about something unrelated to the project. Avoiding the stress entirely, especially if it’s a work project or a bill that must be paid, is not the answer. But a short break from the stressor and thinking about it can provide a new perspective and time to calm down.

Meditate. When stressed out, men and women should not discount the potential benefits of meditation. Researchers from Johns Hopkins University examined more than 19,000 meditation

Father Time may be a formidable foe, but people can take steps to give their memories a boost as they get older: Embrace recognition instead of trusting recall. Dr. Joel Salinas, a neurologist who specializes in behavioral neurology and neuropsychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital, notes that human beings are better at recognition than recall. That means people are more likely to remember something they read, such as a note or a list, than something they’re simply told.

Recognize the value of repetition. The Harvard Medical School notes that people might be more inclined to remember what they hear if they repeat it out loud.

According to a 2015 report published in the Daily Mail, many people spend more time on their devices than they do sleeping. A recent Nielsen Company audience report also found that adults in the United States devote about 10 hours and 40 minutes each day to consuming media on their personal computers, tablets, multimedia devices, TVs and more.

Researchers continue to study the effects of screen time on personal health, but there is reason to believe that screen time may be especially harmful to vision.

Devices force the eyes to focus at near range, and over time that can have an adverse effect on vision.

Prevent Blindness America says that eye fatigue, dryness and blurred vision are some of the common effects of prolonged screen use, but these are not the only concerns. Digital devices also expose the eyes to blue light. While research as to how blue light impacts vision is ongoing, there is concern over the long-term effects of screen exposure since these screens are in close proximity to the eyes and use is often prolonged. Prevent Blindness America says that studies suggest continued exposure to blue light over time can lead to difficulty focusing, premature aging of the eyes and even damage to retinal cells.

A recent study by the National Eye Institute found the frequency of myopia, also known as near-sightedness, has increased exponentially in the last few years. Reasons include a spike in time

spent looking at things close-up and a lack of outdoor activities that require focusing elsewhere. The American Academy of Pediatrics notes that a separate study recently found that excessive screen time usage in adolescents was associated with development of acute onset esotropia, or crossing of the eyes, and that limiting usage of gadgets decreased the degree of eye crossing in these patients.

Eyes, just like any other muscle, require a varied workout to remain healthy. Many vision experts recommend the 20-20-20 rule. According to this rule, for every 20 minutes of looking at a screen, a person should look away at an object 20 feet away for 20 seconds or more. This will help eye muscles to relax. The group All About Vision says to use proper lighting, such as ambient lighting. Position a computer monitor so that windows or lights are to the sides instead of in front or behind it. Be sure indoor light isn’t too bright, as bright light can contribute to glare and fatigue.

Antireflective lenses on eyeglasses or filters for screens also can help absorb some of the blue light and limit how much reaches the retina and accesses the central nerve of the eye. This may alleviate digital eye strain as well. Screen users may want to adjust the display of their devices so they feature a cool, gray tone, which produces less glare.

Eyes can be adversely affected by screen time unless strategies are implemented to limit strain and to rest muscles.

How to reduce damage to eyes resulting from prolonged screen time

Eastern Suffolk BOCES Sequoya High School students socialize, build connections, and hope to make a difference to students at the Brookhaven Learning Center (BLC) at Samoset by offering personal attention and positive reinforcement.

BLC at Samoset Middle School is an included special education site providing a continuum of services to students with moderate to severe developmental disabilities.

Students at Sequoya High School engage in a school-wide behavior management system.

The high school students involved in the mentoring program have achieved the highest level of appropriate behavior by exhibiting respect, compliance, preparedness, and completion of assignments allowing them increased privileges and access to the mentoring program.

School Social Worker Dana Forstadt said, “The PALS Mentoring Program provides the high school students an opportunity to engage with the BLC students, who are educated in a sensory-enriched environment. High school students may individually assist BLC students at the Smart Board, at their desks, and spend time with them during the lunch period or in the sensory room.” The high school students do not create activities for the BLC students, but follow the activity created by the teacher.

Marissa, a student from Brentwood UFSD, said, “I feel like I’m building a connection and making a difference at BLC. The experience is giving me the opportunity to think about my future like getting into a career where I can work with students who have developmental disabilities.”

Longwood CSD student Ashley has visited BLC at Samoset several times.

She said, “I love working with the students. The experience has inspired me to want to further my education and continue on to get involved in child psychology.”

The PALS Mentoring Program is beneficial to both the high school students and the elementary students.

The high school students understand that it is a privilege to participate in the educational field trip via the mentoring program.

They learn to take direction from the BLC at Samoset teachers and learn to work independently. The middle school students receive personal, interactive attention to help motivate them to focus on tasks and engage in classroom learning.

Mr. Seff began his career as a science teacher in the Connetquot Central

School District in the late 1960s and served as an inspiration to thousands of students during his time teaching. Later in his career, he assumed the role of chairman of the district’s science department.

A team of five Sachem High School North students from the Sachem Central School District secured a first-place finish at the 20th annual Long Island Regional Envirothon environmental studies competition on April 25th.

Seniors Chris Eagler, Emily Hudak and Molly Kearns teamed up with junior Emily Gelardi and sophomore Miranda Garcia-Cassani as they navigated the five subject areas of this year’s Envirothon. The

topics included the four recurring subjects of aquatics, forestry, soils and wildlife, and rangeland management served as the current issue for this year.

During the competition, students cycled throughout the subject stations, where they answered a collection of multiple-choice questions that incorporated handson elements, including various equipment, maps and audiovisual devices.

As part of the competition, students were given an environmental issue

for the focus of an oral presentation that is delivered to a panel of judges.

Students underwent extensive preparation during their free time leading up to the detailed 10-minute presentation.

As first-place winners, each team member received $500 and a local field guide and was awarded an all-expensespaid trip to compete at the New York State Envirothon in Geneva, New York, on May 23rd and 24th.

Town Task Force For the secondconsecutive year, several members of the Connetquot High School Anti-Bullying Club participated in the Town of Islip’s Anti-Bias Task Force in an effort to help cultivate a positive learning environment and community.

In preparation for the program, the students were trained to assess bias concerns, make positive changes and influence character

development in their school and community. As a culminating activity, the students worked together on addressing prejudice, engaging in meaningful discussions on how to combat the issue.

The Yankee Air Museum is offering Air Adventures on board the pristine Boeing B-17G “Yankee Lady” for $450 per person during its appearance at the Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach. The plane will be at the American Airpower Museum at Republic Airport, in Farmingdale.

An Air Adventure provides a person with a multisensory, immersive experience in the type of World War II aircraft commonly called a Flying Fortress.

Your Air Adventure begins with a briefing and then you take your station.

The authenticity of this craft is spellbinding. After taxiing and takeoff, you will have 25 minutes in the air. Upon reaching a cruising speed of 150mph at an altitude of 1200 feet you are able to move to other positions in the Fort, including the Plexiglas nose, flight deck, bomb bay, radio room and waist gunnery section.

As your mission ends you’ll better know the courage of the sky men who flew vast armadas of these majestic aircraft, who commanded the clouds and rode on thunder, and you too will step off exclaiming

Parents also visited and learned about the many significant people from history the students represented.

The annual wax museum aligns with the nonfiction genre studies element of the English language arts curriculum, in which students choose biographies of historical figures to research.

Stop the Bleed The Trauma team from NYU Winthrop Hospital, an ACS Level 1 Trauma Center, expanded the scope of its Stop the Bleed program to more than a dozen Athletic Trainers who serve area high schools throughout Nassau County. Athletic Trainers from Syosset and Locust Valley high schools participated in this week’s training alongside NYU Winthrop’s Athletic Trainers who serve high schools in Garden City, East Meadow, Herricks, Hempstead, Rockville Centre, Plainview, Westbury, Uniondale and Levittown among others.

Knowledge gained through Stop the Bleed is most often associated with treating injuries following mass casualties, gun violence or car crashes, but sports injuries can

also be very serious. By empowering the Athletic Trainers through Stop the Bleed, high school sports teams in Nassau County will now be better prepared to address a wide range of injury possibilities – including life-threatening bleeding.

“The NYU Winthrop Athletic Trainer team collaborates with physicians to provide preventative services, emergency care, clinical diagnosis, rehabilitation of injuries and more,” said Christopher Napoli, MS, ATC, Supervisor of Athletic Training Services at NYU Winthrop. “Empowering Athletic Trainers through Stop the Bleed helps round out their capabilities if faced with serious bleeding, enabling them to provide assistance to save lives and

limbs. This training should be required for Athletic Trainers in every school district on Long Island.”

NYU Winthrop’s Athletic Trainers are part of the Hospital’s Sport Medicine program and the Athletic Trainers’ services include community outreach on acute care of injuries.

“Although most injuries that occur in athletics are relatively minor, lifethreatening injuries are unpredictable and can occur without warning,” added Tony Marra, Athletic Trainer at Locust Valley High School. “Serious injury can occur during any physical activity – and at any level of participation.

A team of Investors Bank employees recently volunteered their time to turnover garden beds, weed and plant at the Options for Community Living Greenhouse and gardens located in Medford, New York. Options – a Long Island not-for-profit serving people with chronic physical and mental illnesses – operates a Greenhouse where residents grow flowers and vegetables as well as plants that are sold at seasonal fundraising events and at the Options Thrift Store, located at 392 Hawkins Avenue, Ronkonkoma, New York.

The Investors Bank employees helped weed and prepare the soil for planting, installed screening to help protect the garden from the deer and rabbit populations and planted vegetables and flowers. “The volunteers

were so wonderful. I am thankful for their help getting us ready for the planting season,” said Options’ Horticulturist Jason Mullen.

“Their impact will go far beyond the work they have done because we will be able to use the revitalized garden beds for many seasons to come.”

“It has been a pleasure to volunteer at the Options Greenhouse,” said Investors Bank Branch Manager Amanda Seppi.

The NYU Winthrop Trauma team has been training organizations and residents across Long Island, bringing the program’s lifesaving techniques to firefighters, public safety officers, health professionals, universities, public entertainment venues and, more recently, high school staffs.

Noted Steve Tozer, the Athletic Trainer at Syosset High School, “As a certified Athletic Trainer, I am called upon to assist students who suffer injuries during

athletic competitions.

Stop the Bleed training enables me to now provide immediate assistance to halt serious bleeding until emergency responders arrive. While I hope I never have to utilize the skills learned in Stop the Bleed, the training could one day prove to be the difference between life and death.”

According to a National Academies of Science study, trauma is the leading cause of death for Americans under the age of 46. In many cases, the deaths are due to blood loss and are preventable. The Stop the Bleed program teaches tactics to recognize life-threatening bleeding and provide immediate response to control that bleeding including by direct pressure, the use of tourniquets, or packing

(filling) a wound with gauze or clean cloth.

Bleeding wounds, such as to the arms and legs, can many times be controlled by direct pressure.

Dr. D’Andrea Joseph, Chief of NYU Winthrop’s Division of Trauma and Critical Care, hopes that Stop the Bleed will become a standard lifesaving program just like CPR. The Hospital is encouraging institutions to install Stop the Bleed kits, which include tourniquets, alongside defibrillators in public venues and at schools.

Wallaby Naming Day: A day to celebrate the naming of the park’s new Wallaby, with fun activities and free bags of popcorn, juice boxes and free face painting for the kids from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Leading up to the event, which will take place on Saturday, June 16, the public can vote on name from a series of public submissions on the Long Island Game Farm’s Facebook page.

The winning name will be announced at the event.

The person who submitted the winning name will receive two free park admissions and a Wallaby Encounter. Two runners up will also receive a Wallaby Encounter.

Father’s Day: Half-priced admission to all dad’s that visit the park on Father’s Day, Sunday, June 17th.
