The students visited the Annapolis Naval Academy, Mount Vernon, Arlington National Cemetery, Ford’s Theatre and the Spy Museum. With his boat, docked in Lindenhurst, he is volunteering his spare time to take children with disabilities (along with a parent or guardian) or disabled veterans on fishing, snorkeling and boating trips in the Great South Bay.

Perrell delves into the life and times of French artist Edouard Manet, his masterful paintings, and why he was such a pivotal figure in the transition from Realism to Impressionism. The last of the series, Long Island Masters: Artists in our Midst, will be on Friday, November 7th, from 7 to 9 p.m. Perrell explores Long Island’s strong presence in the art world by looking at the works from famous artists like Jackson Pollock and April Gornik to artists with ties to the Art League of Long Island.

Marking The Milestones By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I’m not sure when it first occurred to me, but at some point over the course of the last few weeks, I came to the somewhat startling realization that it has been 10 full years since I graduated from college. A whole decade. Wow. I’m not sure why this came as such a shock.

After all, the math clearly adds up. And I did attend my high school’s 10-year reunion a full 4 years ago.

But still, it seemed that there would be a bit more of a cushion until the next milestone. I suppose time flies while you’re busy

working to make ends meet and your life is not dictated by a bell schedule.

Although, come to think of it, there were no bells to signal the beginning or ending of class in college, which was nice in its own way. It was that subtle transition from the structure of high school to the faux freedom of “the real world,” where you were able to choose a path well suited to your future pursuits and, well, pursue it.

And now here we are, 10 years later. Bells have been replaced by alarm clocks and deadlines and bills and all those fun adult

responsibilities. To think we once thought finals and term papers were the ultimate source of stress, right? It almost makes school seem appealing once again. Almost.

To all those graduating from college this Spring, congratulations. May you find something worth pursuing that brings you a great deal of happiness and fulfillment; ideally, something which pays the bills, of course.

Counting Down The Days To The End

As I count down the days until my final day of high school, I can’t help but feel nostalgic about the friends that I’ve made, the things that I’ve done, and the chapter of my life that is now coming to a close.

These past few years have gone by so fast. From the moment I walked into SJB on the first day of my freshman year, I knew that my final day would be hard. I’ve made special bonds here. I’ve done great things here.

St. John’s has afforded me the ability to attend Villanova in the fall.

Without SJB, my high school years would have been mediocre. Now, as a

graduating student, I feel torn between emotions.

It is a bittersweet end to the greatest part of my life thus far. As I close my locker for the last few times, I am just beginning to realize how special my time here was. I’ve never felt so accepted by a group of my peers.

It is with a heavy heart that I write this article.

I am going to miss every aspect of SJB. From the Cougar Crazies to Mrs. Walsh screaming in the hallways, St. John’s has been a pleasure. My years here have influenced my future. I’ve just qualified to row in the National Championship for St. John’s. Hopefully, I can

If I could start over as a freshman, I would do it all the same. There is nothing about St. John’s that I would have changed. If you are on the fence about sending your son or daughter to St. John’s, do it. It is the smartest investment you’ll ever make. St. John’s is an environment that breeds leaders.

For the third consecutive year, Goldman Sachs volunteers will work with the Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum’s corps of volunteer gardeners on May 19th to prepare, plant and mulch the Museum’s large organic vegetable garden.

The project includes preparation, weeding and planting the flower gardens around the Vanderbilt Mansion. The bountiful harvest from the organic garden is donated each year to a local food pantry.

Volunteers from the Goldman Sachs Community Team Works (CTW) initiative will work with the Vanderbilt’s own volunteer gardeners. In the past two years, the firm’s volunteers have expanded the vegetable garden and, with a corporate grant, have installed an advanced drip-irrigation system that has increased the yield per plot.

CTW is Goldman Sachs’ global initiative that allows the firm’s employees one day off each year to volunteer in team-based projects coordinated with local nonprofit organizations.

In 2013, more than 25,000 volunteers from 50 offices around the world partnered with over 900 nonprofit organizations on a diverse array of community service projects.

United Cerebral Palsy of Greater Suffolk, Inc. was named a winner at the 2nd Annual Long Island Imagine Awards on Tuesday, May 6th, at Crest Hollow Country Club. UCP of Suffolk won the Pilot Benefits Group Innovation Award for its American Red Cross Volunteer Support Group, the nation’s first group of individuals with a developmental disability who are trained Red Cross volunteers.

The 2nd Annual Long Island Imagine Awards is the premiere awards gala dedicated exclusively to the nonprofit sector.

It highlights some of the 3,500 nonprofit

organizations that are based on Long Island, covering health, welfare, advocacy and cultural organizations.

Each award winner was given a beautiful glass trophy along with a $5,000 grant. The Pilot Benefits Group Innovation Award recognizes nonprofits that have been innovative in adopting new platforms that lead to an increase in the organization’s ability to meet its mission.

The American Red Cross Volunteer Support Group, which was formed in July 2010, consists of 13 trained volunteers who through peer to peer training and presentations

share vital information on preparedness and fire safety.

Art Ball A Success More than 400 attendees from the Long Island medical and corporate community came out to the Cradle of Aviation in Garden City on Friday, May 2nd, to attend the American Heart Association’s 51st Annual Long Island Heart Ball.

The Long Island Heart Ball is an annual social event held to recognize outstanding accomplishments of individuals and companies in the area of cardiovascular science and leadership.

This year’s event was chaired by Christopher Doveala, Vice President, Financial Services, Leviton Mfg. Co. The 51st Annual Heart Ball honored George A. Petrossian, MD, FACC, Director, Interventional Cardiovascular

Dr. Petrossian received the 2014 Cardiovascular Science Award. Attendees will also heard from former New York Islander and heart survivor, Jean Potvin and reality star and stroke survivor, Ashlee White.

Former major league baseball player and Long Island native Frank Catalanotto recently visited fifth grade students at Connetquot Central School District’s Edward J. Bosti Elementary School to motivate them to pursue their goals.

As part of the school’s book project, fifth grade student Liam Doyle, 11, an avid sports enthusiast,

was encouraged by the Catalanotto’s story of dedication and resilience after reading the former baseball player’s autobiography Heart & Hustle.

The book’s lasting impression on the fifth grader prompted his mother to pen a letter of appreciation to Catalanotto. While visiting the students, Catalanotto

inspired with his story of determination and hard work as local little league player with big dreams and ambition, which resulted in a 14-year career in major league baseball.

Catalonatto motivated the 5th graders to continue to persevere and strive for success and never give up on their dreams.

Arts & Culture Connetquot Central School District Connetquot High School Concert Choir recently visited Philadelphia, PA, for a day long workshop with popular conductor, composer and musician Dr. Matthew Glandorf at the Curtis Institute of Music.

The students received

interactive tutorials and learned about skills that need to be honed in order to be successful professional performers.

The workshop culminated with the concert choir students performing for Dr. Glandorf.

Along with the exceptional learning

experience of visiting a different city and attending live music and arts performances, the students had the opportunity to develop a profound appreciation for music, culture and performing arts.

Many of the players at this level are playing lacrosse for the first time, and parents are actively

supporting their team at weekly practices and games.

As the parents watch the boys in action, they have been pleased with their intensity, enjoyment of the game, and the new friends they have made.

Connetquot Central School District Ronkonkoma Middle School’s National Junior Honor Society recently took their annual trip to Washington, D.C. The students visited the Annapolis Naval Academy,

Mount Vernon, Arlington National Cemetery, Ford’s Theatre and the Spy Museum. They also visited the Vietnam, Korean and the World War II war memorials, the Lincoln Monument and the White House.

The junior honor society students displayed their knowledge of history by quizzing one another in a Jeopardy style trivia contest on the bus ride back home.

Library Presentation On Wednesday evening, April 23rd, car aficionados assembled at the Connetquot Public Library for H. Roy Jaffe’s slideshow presentation of The Most Beautiful And Unusual Cars Ever Built. Before the program, patrons reminisced about their most treasured automotive gems, and the thrill of driving them.

Roy took the audience on a passage through time, from the 1911 Breese Paris Convertible Roadster to the 1972 Maserati Boomerang.

Roy’s journey began in the Northwest Bronx at the tender age of thirteen when he first considered a career in car design. Although, his first vehicle was a motorcycle, it was unique, one-of a-kind cars that captured his imagination.

He displayed a sketch of the Phantom Corsair that he’d seen at the 1938 World’s Fair. After obtaining an engineering degree at New York University, Roy went to work for General Electric but his career eventually took his to the experimental department of General Motors.

It was at GM as a senior stylist that he worked on designs leading to some of the most innovative cars built in the 1950s. During this groundbreaking time in the automotive industry, Roy designed the last three-wheeled Martin in 1954. The Power Point presentation covered a series of pioneering vehicles with exceptional design features including the 1954 Rolls Royce Wraith Hooper which was

built with no blind spots.

According to Roy, the stylish 1936 Hispano Suiza V-12 ranked amongst the world’s greatest cars.

Upon his retirement, Roy later became a freelance industrial designer. He enjoys sharing his vast knowledge of custom built cars and the renowned car makers whose unique vision came to fruition.

With five collectible cars of his own, including a 1953 Bentley Sedan and a 1954 Rolls Royce limousine, his knowledge and appreciation of automotive design enlightened all who attended. For more information on library programs please visit our website at www. connetquotlibrary.com.

Lindsay III to clean-up Holbrook’s main roads and sidewalks. On May 3rd, over 150 local athletes, boy scouts, girl scouts, church groups, business owners, and residents came out to Seneca Middle School on a beautiful Saturday morning to give back to their community by participating in the Holbrook Clean-Up. Volunteers were able to collect more than 250 bags of litter and 400 recyclable bottles throughout Holbrook and Holtsville.

At the May 13th General Meeting of the Suffolk County Legislature, Legislators Tom Muratore and Bill Lindsay III recognized three teams from both Sachem High Schools for winning their respective championships.

Sachem East Varsity Boys Volleyball became the League Champions under the direction of Head Coach William Kropp and Coach Damon Gall. They beat Port Washington, 3-0 to win the Long Island Championship, defeated Lindenhurst 3-1 to win the Suffolk County title, and also eliminated their rival Sachem North in the Suffolk semifinals, 3-1.

Greenway Trail Completed bike safely throughout the communities of Setauket and Port Jefferson Station. The Highway Department’s Division of Traffic Safety has worked diligently to make necessary upgrades to the three main trail crossings at Old Town Road, Sheep Pasture Road and Gnarled Hollow Road during the last year. These upgrades are highlighted by the new decorative poles with crosswalk

signs and rectangular, rapid flashing beacon systems to alert motorists as pedestrians and bicyclists are within the vicinity of these crosswalks.”

“I am glad to have the opportunity to recognize and thank all those whose efforts made this trail a reality” Marcoccia said, “Our community will surely benefit from

the recreational, open space and educational experiences the trail provides. We are fortunate to have people dedicated to the enhancement of our quality of life. As a Setauket resident, I plan to use the trail often.”

Several community organizations, including the Friends of the Greenway and the Three Village Community Trust, worked together with various levels of government to make the original community vision for the trail a reality. The project took the cooperation of all levels of government including the Town of Brookhaven, the Suffolk County Legislature, the New York State Senate and Assembly and the United States Congress working together over thirteen years. Congressman Tim Bishop, New York State Senator Ken Lavalle, Assemblyman Steve Englebright, and Suffolk County Legislator Kara Hahn all participated in the ceremonies and were acknowledged for their work and contribution to the project. Former Brookhaven Town Councilman Steve Fiore-Rosenfeld was also recognized for his advocacy and support for each project phase.

Residents can appreciate a varied landscape while hiking, biking, walking their pet, or just taking a relaxing stroll through the unique Greenway space. It is anticipated that the trail will also be used as an alternate route from Port Jefferson Station to Setauket and Stony Brook and back.

The Greenway Trail, which connects Setauket and Port Jefferson Station, is now officially open and spans an impressive 3.3 miles.

The 6,000 pinwheels displayed on a Stony Brook University field represents the annual lives lost to ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), or Lou Gehrig’s disease.

The field of pinwheels is also symbolic of a growing theme of the annual Ride for Life and for Christopher Pendergast, a 21-year ALS patient, advocate and founder of the Ride for Life Organization. Pendergast, the ALS specialists at Stony Brook Medicine, and supporters of the Ride for Life envision that like the pinwheels, a cure for this fatal neurodegenerative disease is out there with an answer ‘blowing in the wind.’

“Hope is alive, and there is no doubt in my mind we will eventually find a cure. That’s why we press forward,” said Pendergast, at the Ride for Life Celebration and Remembrance Ceremony took place on the Stony Brook University campus on May 10th.

The ceremony is the cornerstone event of the 12-day power wheelchair trek by ALS patients that ends in Manhattan on May 17th. The Ride for Life, which raises awareness and funds for ALS research, began in 1998. During the ceremony, the Ride for Life donated $160,000 to Stony Brook’s Christopher Pendergast ALS Center of Excellence, the only ALS Association-certified center on Long Island.

“This day is about the Riders, the people who support them, those who provide their medical care, and the researchers who are working tirelessly to find a cure for ALS,” said L. Reuven Pasternak, MD, CEO, Stony Brook University Hospital, and Senior VP for Health Systems at Stony Brook Medicine. “We salute the courage of all the patients and remember those who have been lost due to ALS.” “All of the pinwheels we see do represent the many lives taken because of ALS, but we see something more,”

said Al Jordan, a Ride for Life committee member and Associate Dean of Student & Minority Affairs at Stony Brook University School of Medicine. “I am going to borrow a phrase. It is a ‘field of dreams’ with hope that we will soon celebrate a cure.”

Since its inception the Ride for Life has raised close to $5 million to fund ALS research and clinical services.

Through the ALS Center of Excellence, Stony Brook clinicians and neuroscience researchers are conducting research to develop better targeted treatments and

launch clinical trials of new investigative therapies against ALS. “The Ride for Life is an amazing experience, and I hope to go the distance,” said Frank Wojcik, 52, of Commack, a patient at Stony Brook and first time Rider.

Diagnosed in January 2013, Wojcik said Pendergast inspired him to join the Ride for Life. He has learned more about the disease during his patient journey and

“Right now what has been most inspiring is the support along the way, especially all of the kids at the schools on Long Island. They give you so much energy, and hope,” added Wojcik.

This year a record number public schools are participating in the Ride for Life. According to Pendergast, more than 50 schools from East Hampton to Manhattan are taking part, some with donations directly from student efforts. An estimated 8,000 Long Island students this month are learning first-hand about the ALS Ride for Life cause.

Two ALS patients at the event were strong enough to walk the day’s trek onto the Stony Brook University campus.

Clinton Strait, of East Northport, who continues to work as a project manager, said he felt inspired and would hopefully walk on other days during the Ride. Paul Weisman, of Bohemia, walked the Ride course for two days prior to the Stony Brook event.

On hand to support the Ride for Life and Stony Brook event were New York State Senator John J. Flanagan, Town of Brookhaven Supervisor Ed Romaine, and Suffolk County Legislator Kara Hahn.

The event concluded with the Remembrance Ceremony – when the names of 90 people lost to ALS – representing the number of minutes between deaths from ALS in the United States – were read aloud. As the gusts of a coming rainstorm picked up, the families and friends of patients stood around the pinwheel “field of dreams.” Family members then read their loved one’s name aloud, a bell was rung, and a balloon released into the air to honor each of them.

Funds awarded support Cohen’s Kohl’s Cares Keeping Kids Healthy Program, which combats the childhood obesity epidemic through fitness and nutritional education, as a means to prevent excessive weight gain in childhood. On May 10th, the program hosted the Kohl’s Cares Keeping Kids Healthy Top Chef Cook-off, the culmination of a regional competition challenging children and their families to create nutritious and tasty recipes. The Top Chef Cook-off brought together families, community members and Top Chef alum Danny Gagnon, as the young chef finalists prepared their dishes for judging. Kohl’s donation to the medical center was presented in conjunction with the competition.

Dreaming of walking around in art museums and cobblestone streets blanketed with history, Rachel’s wish was to go to Europe. Proud of her family history, Rachel and her family will be headed to Rome, Italy for a 9-day journey.

“Knowing that I had this wish gave me

something to look forward to while finishing up my treatment,” said Ragone.

Rachel completed her treatment in January and was medically cleared to travel. “We are going to Rome, there is so much to do there, and I can’t wait to eat the food!”

During the evening, children with lifethreatening medical conditions from across Suffolk County were granted wishes - and a few were past or current patients from Stony Brook Children’s like 17 year-old Rachel Ragone.

In March of 2013, the Manorville resident was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma, a primary bone cancer that affects mainly children and adolescents.

For almost a year, Rachel was receiving treatment at Stony Brook University Cancer Center under the supervision of Dr. Parker.

Stony Brook Children’s Hospital was presented with the Medical Visionary Award on Thursday, May 8th, at Make-AWish Suffolk County’s 20th Annual Bouquet Of Wishes Spring Dinner. The event took place at Villa Lombardi’s in Holbrook and hosted over 800 guests.

The Foundation presented this award to Stony Brook Children’s for the institution’s meritorious leadership in advanced and innovative pediatric specialty care.

“It is an honor to receive the Medical Visionary Award from the Make-AWish Foundation of Suffolk County,” said Margaret M. McGovern, M.D., Ph.D., Physician-in-Chief, Stony Brook Children’s Hospital.

“At Stony Brook Children’s we value our partnerships with organizations like Make-A-Wish that help us to care for all the needs of the sickest children. It is an organization that does an extraordinary job granting wishes to so many of our pediatric patients.”

Registration is at 1 p.m. at Beekman Beach, 1 West End Avenue in Oyster Bay. Participants paddle to five boats; at each boat, they receive a card. Once they receive five cards, they have made their poker hand. The highest hand wins a prize to be awarded at the awards dinner. All participants must finish by 4 p.m. This event is open to all kayakers and paddleboarders.

An awards dinner will take place at 6 p.m. with live entertainment provided by the Old Salts Band.

This year’s theme for the dinner is “Red, White, and Blue.” Awards will be given for Highest Fundraising Individual and Highest Fundraising Team in each category. In addition, the winning poker hand will be announced. There is no charge for dinner to all participants who raise a minimum of $100.

Alzheimer’s Regatta will have a special treat for those who want to watch the Regatta and Paddling for Poker: a guided tour of historic Oyster Bay and Cold Spring Harbor. The Vessel Christeen is a 40foot Gaff Rigged Sloop that was built in 1883 and completely restored in 1999. She is the oldest Oyster Sloop in America and is a National Historic Landmark. The Christeen will sail from the Sagamore Yacht Club at noon and again at 2 p.m.

For those who wish to participate but do not own a sailboat, paddleboard or kayak, rentals are available.

(ADRC) will host its 2nd Annual Alzheimer’s Regatta & Awards Dinner at the Sagamore Yacht Club, located at Head of Bay Avenue in Oyster Bay.
