Legislator Caracappa Attends Ribbon Cutting at Farmingville Park Named After His Mother was recently upgraded to an all-abilities accessible 50-Foot baseball and multi-use Synthetic Turf Field, which is more accommodating for the handicapped and differently-abled population.

The town park was posthumously named after Legislator Caracappa’s mother, the former Suffolk County Legislator Rose Caracappa.

“Obviously, any park or structure named after my Mom will be near and dear to my heart,” stated Legislator Caracappa. “She was the

most positive influence in my life, and would be proud of today’s event. I’d like to thank Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine, Councilman Kevin LaValle, JVC Broadcasting, Kristine Fitzpatrick and the League of YES, Brookhaven Town Parks Department, Girl Scout Troop 521, as well as all the parents and participants who helped make today’s ribbon cutting a reality. I hope the kids get many years of use and enjoyment at Rose Caracappa Baseball Field.”

In addition to Caracappa and Post members, assistance was provided by Affatato Paving, Boy Scouts from Troop #124, Cub Scouts from Pack# 124 and other community members.

The cleanup effort was organized as a result of illegal dumping of concrete and debris that occurred on Post #400’s grounds. “I was astonished to learn that an individual or business would dishonor our veterans by selfishly littering on the post’s grounds,” stated Legislator Caracappa. “I knew they needed help,

and was pleased with the response and outpouring of support I received from Affatato Paving, the Boy Scouts/Cub Scouts from Troop 124 in Holbrook, and many others. As we honor our veterans during the month of May, which is National Military Appreciation Month, I thank all volunteers for a job well done.”

not be able to take Bubba with her. She couldn’t stand the thought of leaving him behind to fend for himself or to try to find someone else to provide him with the love and care that he has grown accustomed to with her.

When she heard about the work that Paws of War does, helping soldiers to get their pets back to the U.S., and she turned to it for assistance.

“Bubba is such a wonderful cat, and he greets me every time he sees me and purrs loudly whenever I pet him,” says Sgt. Rode.

“I have formed such a great bond with him, it took me so long to gain his trust, and I can’t fathom the thought of leaving him behind once I get deployed back to the U.S. He has been a wonderful companion and provides me so much comfort when I need it most. I could not leave this cat behind to suffer and die. He trusts me, and I won’t let him down.”

Paws of War is seeking the support of the community to cover the costs in order to bring Bubba back to the states to live out his life with Sgt. Rode. While the organization has helped many soldiers bring their rescued animals back, it’s a mission that is costly.

Soldiers tend to rescue stray dogs and cats, and they form bonds with them that help them to find comfort during their time of deployment.

With the help of donations from the community, they are able to cover the expenses that are involved in

such a mission.

The organization has helped so many soldiers with this type of mission that it has created a strong network of support. It’s that network that helps them to navigate through the challenges and logistics of relocating a pet overseas, and to pay for the care, paperwork, and flight that is involved in the mission.

In addition to helping soldiers relocate their pets, Paws of War also rescues dogs, provides them with proper training, and then pairs them with veterans who need service animals, all free of charge. While she didn’t set out to be, Army Sergeant Rode became an angel to a cat while serving in the Middle East. She’s on a mission to help Paws of War with the costs of rescuing her cat, which she named Bubba, back to the states with her since she has received new orders. It’s a mission that Paws of War can help her pull off, but only with the support of the community.

This type of effort takes a village, and the organization is asking people to support Sgt. Rode, who is serving her country.

“This is a story you can’t help but to love and want to get behind,” explains Dereck Cartright, a disabled veteran who is the stateside logistics coordinator at Paws of War. “Sgt. Rode saved Bubba, but there’s only so much she can do on her own” When Sgt. Rode first saw Bubba, he had given up.

Bloody, frail, and injured, the cat ran from everyone.

It was clear that he had been fighting for his life for a long time. Sgt. Rode knew she had to help. For days, she left food, waiting nearby to make sure he ate. Initially, he cried and backed away when he saw her, but eventually, he grew to trust her and allowed her to sit within just a few feet while he frantically ate the food she left.

Slowly but surely, Bubba allowed her to get a little closer until, finally, Sgt. Rode was able to touch him. However, what she discovered horrified her.

Old scars mixed in with new wounds that covered Bubba’s body. He had been through a lot and was timid, but once he felt the kind touch of Sgt. Rode, he immediately began purring, showing her the love and affection he had never been shown.

She became Bubba’s angel, and he became her greatest joy while serving overseas, and they were essentially inseparable.

Worry came back to her when she received new orders to head home, and it was clear that she would

Yuke Li is a New York based Illustrator, writer and storyteller. She graduated from the MFA Illustration Program at the School of Visual Arts in the summer of 2020. She has worked in the book industry and editorial area for eight years creating animation, editorial work and picture book spreads working both traditionally and digitally. Her works have been recognized by many Illustration and Children’s Book Awards Yuke says “Curiosity about the universe and humans is always with her. She believes that visual language is her best way to communicate with the world.”

Joseph A. Miller is an Associate Professor of Art at S.U.N.Y. Buffalo State, where he has taught drawing and painting since 1997. His work is in numerous public and private collections, and has been shown internationally in Finland, China, Poland and the Czech Republic, as well as across the United States, earning numerous awards in many prestigious exhibitions.

“I focus primarily on the human figure depicted in environments that create a context for psychologically charged, open ended narratives. Images of figures or figures in landscapes, in groups or in isolation, share a common feeling of significance. Wholly absorbed within themselves or the dialogue shared between one another, they wait for the unfolding of their private story.

primary inspiration. The unexpected colors and textures found in nature inspire Ron to capture the dynamics of light and dark; form and balance. As a realist, he uses tone and color to invite his audience to experience the moment captured on canvas. His preferred mediums of acrylic (for layering of color), or oil (for blending) are specifically chosen to create a sense of drama and movement. Ron is also a muralist and has done commissions for school districts, hospitals, nursing homes, municipalities, and private residences.

Caryn Coville’s style is realism, and her work showcases

objects. Her award-winning work has been shown extensively in solo gallery exhibits and juried shows and her work is held in corporate and private collections throughout the United States and Canada. She has an extensive list of awards and credits for her amazing artwork.

Lupe Galván grew up in rural Idaho among the farm lands of the Snake River valley, the historic land of the Shoshone people. He earned his MFA from The New York Academy of Art in 2009. Lupe’s personal cosmogony guides him to explore experiences of Indigenous roots and American life and express them through painting and drawing. He is passionate about mentorship and teaches drawing and painting Yavapai College in Prescott, AZ, Boise State University, Boise, ID, Neumann University, Fleisher Art Memorial in Philadelphia, PA and Southern

Holden Willard is a 21 year old undergraduate student studying at the Montserrat College of Art. In May, he will receive his BFA in Painting, however his interests serve multiple mediums: printmaking, photography, performance, collage & woodworking. “My work is currently concerned with analyzing the effects of white male toxicity, specifically toxic masculinity. I’m mainly striving towards creating a dialogue between the past, present and future - be it through the lens of family, friends and environment. In my mind, these are essential devices that I utilize to create a coming of age narrative in rural Maine. Images from home, adventures of youth, fears and anxieties expressed through eyesight and posture - all in an effort of saying the unsaid.”

Patty Yantz’ art is about personal reaction to a scene or location rather than an attempt at technical reproduction of that view. “Focusing on color, contrast and composition, I have found that close-up observation is a good tool for understanding different perspectives and developing conceptual awareness. After retiring from teaching secondary art Patty has immersed herself in her own art career. She works in Pastel, Acrylic and Watercolor, showing her works in juried and invitational exhibits across Long Island. “Nature is the underlying theme of all my work, with a major inspiration being the Long Island landscape.”

Wenonah Horticulture Study Plants Seeds For Great Success The cultivation of delicious crops was at the forefront of a recent yearly initiative at Wenonah Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District, as students across grade levels geared up to raise different fruits and vegetables in the building’s numerous growing areas.

Fourth and fifth grade students created pallet gardens to be placed outside each second and third grade

classroom for students to plant an assortment of lettuces, radishes and herbs. They also constructed growing trellises for kindergarten and first grade students to plant and care for snow peas.

As part of the expansive study of the growing process, students start seeds inside using both traditional pots and a hydroponic system. As the year progresses, younger students will be paired with

Hospital Association Offers $2,000 Scholarship

The Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council (NSHC) announces a $2,000 scholarship for college juniors/seniors or post graduate students who are studying Journalism, Marketing/Communications, or Healthcare Administration.

(The scholarship is not for clinical-based study.) The Ann Marie Brown Memorial Scholarship honors the

late Ann Marie Brown, who served as vice president for government and public relations for the Hospital Council from 1983 to 1993. The scholarship is administered by the Hospital Council’s Communications Committee. Filing deadline is June 15, 2021.

For National Electrical Safety Month, PSEG Long Island Offers Helpful Tips

May is National Electrical Safety Month, and PSEG Long Island reminds its customers that they can take simple, cost-free precautions to stay safe around their homes and neighborhoods.

“The safety of our customers and employees is always PSEG Long Island’s top priority, so National Electrical Safety Month is an important opportunity for us to spread the word,” said John O’Connell, vice president of Transmission and Distribution at PSEG Long Island. “Our electrical workers undergo extensive training so they can work safely, and we also want to educate the people we serve about how to stay safe around electricity in and around their homes.”

Electricity is essential to modern life, yet it can

sometimes be taken for granted. Here are some practical tips to help customers stay safe: Do not handle electric appliances with wet or damp hands, and never use electric appliances in wet or damp conditions, unless the appliances are specifically rated for that use.

If there are small children or pets around, make sure unused wall outlets have safety coverings. All outlets within reach should be protected with plastic closures that fit snugly and cannot be removed easily.

Inspect all appliances and extension cords regularly to ensure that they are in good condition. Cords should not be frayed or damaged.

Ensure that cords do not run under rugs or have furniture resting on them.

Never pour water on an

electric fire, as water acts as a conductor and can cause shock. A fire extinguisher rated “Class C” should be used for electric fires.

Install smoke detectors on the ceiling away from air vents and near bedrooms.

Test smoke detectors every few months to ensure they’re working, and change the batteries every spring and fall when the clocks change.

Never touch a downed wire or go near one. Always assume the power line is live, and call PSEG Long Island at 800-490-0075 to report downed wires.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, roughly half of the injuries involving grills are thermal burns.

Of the approximately 16,600 patients who visit emergency rooms for injuries involving grills each year, 8,200 are treated for thermal burns. UPMC HealthBeat notes that thermal burns typically occur when a person touches flames or fire or hot molten liquid or steam. Thermal burns also can result when touching a hot object, such as cooking pans, irons or heated

appliances.

WebMD advises burn sufferers to call 911 immediately if the burn penetrates all layers of the skin; if the skin appears leathery or charred, with white, brown or black patches; or if the hands, feet, face, or genitals are burned.

In addition, call 911 immediately if infants or seniors suffer any burns, even if the burn does not appear severe.

Treatment will depend on the severity and location of the burn. In the immediate aftermath of a thermal burn, Stanford Children’s Health advises

cooling the affected area with cold water or a cold compress until the pain is reduced or alleviated.

Avoid breaking any blisters that form, and protect the burn with a dry, sterile gauze bandage or with a clean bed sheet or cloth. Do not attempt to remove clothing that is stuck to the burned area. In such instances, cut around the clothing and leave the burn intact.

Resist any temptation to apply ointments, oils or sprays to the burned area, as these should only be applied when prescribed by a doctor.

Caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease can be stressful, and for those who are new to caregiving, it can also feel overwhelming. To help families cope with the challenges of dementia caregiving, the Alzheimer’s Association is teaming up with the Frank & Barbara Broyles Foundation to share helpful tips.

On May 20, the two organizations will host “Play by Play: Creating Care Plans,” a virtual program on combating caregiver stress and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

“A plan can make a real difference for anyone involved in caregiving,” said Kate Anastasia, director of programs at the Alzheimer’s Association.

“Every team needs a

playbook to succeed, and the same is true of caregiving teams. Team members can often ignore their own needs, leading to stress and potentially health problems. Every good caregiving plan includes both the person with Alzheimer’s or dementia and the people providing care.”

The Frank & Barbara Broyles Foundation was founded in honor of former University of Arkansas football coach and athletic director Frank Broyles and his wife, Barbara, who both had Alzheimer’s disease.

In 2006, Coach Broyles penned “Coach Broyles’ Playbook for Alzheimer’s Caregivers,” which offers strategies and goaloriented advice for those caring for loved ones with
