Fire Island Lighthouse Events The Fire Island Lighthouse Preservation Society will present the following: Plein Air Art Studio Friday and Saturday, May 25th and 26th Artists from Wet Paints Studio Group will be painting on site in the Lighthouse area.

All artwork will be on display until June 11th and for sale, with 30% of the proceeds being donated to

Thirteen high school students from underrepresented school districts graduated from the HOPE (Health Occupations Partnership for Excellence) Program on May 8th.

HOPE is a successful 2-year academic program that preps high school students from underrepresented school

districts and economically challenged backgrounds for the SATs and gives them exposure and experience in healthcare and related fields.

Through classes and workplace shadowing experiences with Stony Brook faculty, they learn about the lives and skills it takes to be nurses, physicians, physical

therapists, laboratory technicians and other healthcare professions.

This is the 10th HOPE graduation celebration, in which a total of 141 students have graduated and gone on to college in New York and around the country. Some have or will be entering healthcare fields.

with Jamie Lynn Ryan I have had my fair share of dining adventures through the years, most of which have since been reflected upon with a degree of amusement in hindsight. At the time, however, well let’s just say there are moments when our entire eating experience seemed to be part of a rather lengthy segment of Candid Camera.

There was the time, while up in Saratoga Springs one summer years ago, that our meal was interrupted by a rather persistent fly. Upon swatting said flying creature, he began a free-fall into what had been - up to that point - a rather enjoyable pasta entree of my mother’s. As she watched, horrified, the formerly agile winged critter began what appeared to be a slow dog paddle through the sauce. Both my father and I were in complete hysterics by this point. When the waiter stopped by the table to check on whether we were enjoying the meal, my mother pointed to the at this point - motionless fly and replied, “Well, I was enjoying it very much, but…” The waiter, without missing a beat, shrugged

and remarked, “Oh yeah, that happens a lot - summer and all.”

No offer of a replacement, no sympathy for the ruined meal, no nothing.

The customer is always right, indeed.

Of course, there are times when the customer seems obliged to seat him/herself, place the order and perhaps even head back into the kitchen to cook it as well, such is the poor quality of service.

On the other end of the spectrum, I’ve been witness to a waitress literally sweeping a plate out from under my friend’s poised fork, determining that she was, in fact, finished. As we sat, incredulous over this turn of events, we didn’t know whether to laugh or demand a refund. After about two hours of nursing our drinks and “contemplating” dessert, more appetizers, perhaps a breakfast course… we decided to take the check.

Oddly enough, the waitress didn’t seem amused.

Fast forward to this past Cinco de Mayo, a “holiday” I have never made a special point to celebrate

aside from perhaps ordering a taco or two at a take-out restaurant.

This year, my friend and I (different friend, same Candid Camera tendencies) decided to wait it out to dine in style at a genuine Mexican establishment on the busiest Saturday night of the year. After about an hour, we were seated. We ordered drinks, appetizers and entrees, all of which arrived in quick succession.

Having already decided what we wanted for dessert, we patiently waited for the waiter to return.

And waited…. And waited…

Each time he passed our table, all attempts to make eye contact and flag him down went unnoticed.

We were, we determined, completely invisible.

Nearly an hour later, a random waitress happened to glance our way. Can we order dessert from you? Certainly. Nearly another 30 minutes elapsed before our own waiter, the one who had seemingly abandoned our table, returned.

Dessert? We looked at each other.

We had now been in this venue for precisely four hours.

Cheers, indeed.

May’s Charity of the Month is:

Lisa Gatti is the CEO & Founder of PalO-Mine Equestrian, Inc., a comprehensive therapeutic equine program that uses horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for individuals with disabilities and for other vulnerable populations. Through persistence, hard work and a passion to serve others, Lisa opened Pal-O-Mine in 1995 as a 501(C)(3) non-profit.

Pal-O-Mine grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week - and they continue to grow today! This organization sits on eight acres, with a 20-stall barn, handicapped accessible bathrooms, a new 100’ x 120’ indoor arena with state-of- theart footing and a rider hoisting system, and three outdoor riding arenas. They help an unbelievable amount of people, and their work is truly heartwarming.

Individuals of all ages are welcome to take part in the programs they offer. They operate with five full-time employees, 35 independent contractors and 80 volunteers a week. Their riding instructors have experience with the following diagnoses: Autism Spectrum Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Sensory Processing Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Neurological Disorders, Cerebral Palsy, Traumatic Brain Injury, Multiple Sclerosis, Down Syndrome, Spina Bifida, Genetic Disorders and Emotional Disturbances.

Every day, they have a different school

drop off children at their location to benefit from their organization; they also offer group programs, individual lessons, corporate workshops and a program specifically designed for military members.

Volunteers are the backbone of PalO-Mine, and there are many different ways to get involved. Some ways you may volunteer are: working directly with children and adults in lessons, working with therapy horses and performing barn chores, fundraising, and helping with property enhancement and landscaping.

Pal-O-Mine has two major fundraising events that are coming up in June. One is their 16th annual “Day at the Races,” which will be on June 8th at Belmont Racetrack. This is held the day before the Belmont Stakes and is a wonderful outing, offering lunch, a premium open bar and door prizes. Their 10th annual Golf Outing, “Par Fore the Horse,” will be held on June 25th at Southward Ho Country Club in Bay Shore. This will include golfing, brunch, course refreshments, an open bar, cocktail hour, dinner, gifts and prizes. Both of these events have sponsorship opportunities and are open to the public (tickets must be purchased).

Girls on the Run ~ Long Island

www.GOTRLongIsland.org Girls on the Run is an empowerment program for girls in third through eighth grade that inspires them to be joyful, healthy and confident, while using a fun, interactive curriculum that creatively integrates running. Meeting twice a week in small teams for the 10-week season, volunteer coaches teach girls life skills through engaging lessons and fun movement activities. At each season’s conclusion, all girls from teams across Long Island meet up for a celebratory 5K running event. Their Spring 5K will take place on June 2nd at Hofstra University. They are in need of volunteer coaches (no running experience is required) who have a desire to make an impact on the lives of young girls.

All training is provided. They also need volunteers to help out at their upcoming 5K in the areas of: registration, hospitality, pre-run fun and course cheer. One World, One Dream

In connection with the school’s theme for the year and in celebration of many of the countries that participated in this year’s winter Olympics, John Pearl Elementary School recently hosted a fun and interactive assembly, “One World, One Dream.”

This year’s school theme — which carried the same name as the

assembly program — promoted not only good sportsmanship, but global citizenship as well. All classes researched one nation and representatives from the classes shared information about the culture, geography and traditions at the assembly.

Additionally, the project included learning more about each country in

music, art and physical education classes.

During the assembly, students enjoyed “traveling the world” as they visited the creative national displays set up around the gymnasium. Before leaving for the day, the students sang songs that related to their research, along with the John Pearl School song.

Real Life Math Students enrolled in Laura-Lee Flynn’s and Leslie Cassagne’s Algebra I Regents course at Ronkonkoma Middle School recently took a different and creative way to learn math. They participated in a ball launch lab in an effort to demonstrate how real-life situations can be made

to demonstrate quadratic equations and form a parabola.

The students utilized a toy ball launcher to demonstrate a parabola by shooting the ball over the football field post so it would rise and fall as time went on, as a means of finding the roots by using time and height. Afterward,

they recorded their data to calculate an equation, and then plotted the equation to look for the roots and axis of symmetry.

“This was a very fun lab and it helped demonstrate quadratics in a real-life situation,” said Ronkonkoma Middle School eighth-grade student Samantha Ortiz.

One Step at a Time” was held on Monday, April 30, 2018 at the Garden City Hotel. The annual LICADD event raised over $350,000 to support LICADD’s substance abuse counseling and educational programs serving Long Islanders in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. LICADD was honored to host a record breaking number of guests and sponsors who

graciously believe in vital importance of the LICADD mission.

More than 350 donors, community members, elected officials, treatment providers and their family members turned out to support LICADD and ensure that the agency’s life-saving addiction resources and recovery programs remain available to individuals and families across Long Island.

LICADD Executive Director Steve Chassman stated, “LICADD is grateful for all of our generous donors and sponsors who support LICADD’s substance abuse prevention programs.

Sixty-two years ago R. Brinkley Smithers had a vision that all persons who suffer with addiction would have access to treatment.

The initiative of collecting and redeeming bottles was made possible through the efforts and collaboration of Executive School Personnel Officer Jill Diamond, in Human Resources, with Executive Director of Great Strides Julie Dell’Aira.

Longwood High School junior Chowdhury AnNoor has been awarded the Rensselaer Medal for Excellence in Science and Mathematics.

For more than 90 years, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, in conjunction with high schools around the world, has awarded the Rensselaer Medal and scholarship to promising high school juniors who represent the next generation of leaders,

scientists, innovators, artists, scholars, game designers, architects, humanitarians, and entrepreneurs.

The Rensselaer Medal was presented in 1916 with two purposes: to recognize the superlative academic achievement of young men and women, and to motivate students towards careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines.

Medal Winner The medal, the oldest prize of its kind in the United States, is awarded at more than 2,000 high schools throughout North America, Latin America, Europe and Asia.

The merit scholarship, with a minimum value of $25,000 per year, is guaranteed for four years (five years the bachelor of architecture program) for each medalist who is accepted and enrolls at Rensselaer.

Beside it is a small sign that reads Great Strides – Long Island – Supporting Riders with Challenges. The five cents redeemed from each bottle in the bin goes a long way to providing partial scholarships for therapeutic riding lessons at Great Strides located at Saddle Rock Ranch in Middle Island.

Eastern Suffolk BOCES donates approximately 2000 bottles a month to Great Strides. With these donations and those of others, Great Strides has been able to purchase three additional horses, hire four instructors, and help fund therapeutic lessons via scholarships for more individuals with special challenges.

In addition to hearing Carla perform, the students learned some of the secrets behind the magic in the show and understood a bit more about what it takes to be a successful performer on Broadway.

EVENT INFORMATION

As part of a recent curriculum lesson on gravity, third-grade students at Hiawatha Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District participated in an exciting “eggsperiment” exploring the science behind a free-fall.

All third-graders were asked to compile assorted household materials that

they could fit into a small milk container to protect an egg. Working in teams, students crafted their protective containers filled with various materials, such as cotton balls, cereal, feathers and tissues, that would be dropped from the roof of the school building. To increase the chances of a safe descent, several student groups

added parachutes to their containers. Each studentdesigned container was tested by being dropped from the roof by Principal Kathleen O’Farrell.

To conclude the lesson, students discussed the effects of gravity on the world around them and how they could improve their designs.

Waverly Goes Wild Student-zoologists took over Waverly Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District recently after an animal assignment introduced fourth-graders to the many research tools and techniques available at the library.

With help from Waverly library media specialist Louann Cronin, students embarked on the trimester long project that explores a multitude of animals

from around the world.

Students selected an animal they wanted to research and then utilizing the BOCES School Library System Virtual Reference Collection navigated through multiple databases to collect information on their animal. Once students gathered information from the articles they discovered, they inserted photos into their lap books – a minibook that students create

to record details of their studies – and began to compose an essay on their animal. Student animal selections included wolves, lions, goats and bears, among many others.

The animal research project introduces students to important research tools they will use throughout their educational journey and serves as a complementary connection to the fourthgrade unit on animals.

Creating Characters School District were asked to create an original character for author Nora Raleigh Baskin, including such details as appearance, skills and hobbies, and their dreams for the future.

Amelia’s character, named Emily, had the attributes of being beautiful and kind, enjoying lacrosse, helping

out at an animal shelter, and struggling with multiplication problems.

“Her submission was one of 75 selected from over 2,000 total applicants for this contest,” said Mrs. Zalewski. “We are very proud of her!”

From Virtual Reality to Vinyl Night, the library is adding news and exciting things.

On Thursday, April 19th, the library hosted its first Trivia Night, an evening of facts and fun. From CREATING CHARACTERS - Edward J. Foot Locker Scholar

Connetquot High School senior Marina Duszak was recently awarded a $20,000 scholarship and was selected as one of 20 exceptional young student-athletes honored in the Foot Locker Scholar Athletes Program during a surprise reveal held at Foot Locker in Times Square.

For the seventh consecutive year, Foot Locker Foundation, Inc. recognized students who have demonstrated academic excellence and exemplified strong leadership skills both in sports and within their communities. Marina was selected to join the Foot Locker Scholar Athletes Class of 2018 out of a highly competitive pool of more than 13,000 applicants.

“Each year, it seems we are inspired even more by the stories and caliber of the students who are selected as our Foot Locker Scholar Athletes,” said Richard A.

Johnson, chairman and chief executive officer of Foot Locker, Inc. “We are extremely proud to recognize outstanding scholar athletes, such as Marina, and provide much-needed educational opportunities for today’s youth to empower them to succeed.”

After being diagnosed with leukemia at the start of high school, Marina has not only overcome her illness, she found a way to lead the charge in rallying her community to support cancer centers in her area.

Marina has remained resilient and positive after being affected by cancer — she believes the silver lining is that her battle has helped her find her voice and passion: giving back to others.

After being a Make-AWish recipient, Marina has raised $40,000 over the course of two years to give back to the Make-

A-Wish Foundation and local cancer centers. She would not let her illness get her down; throughout high school she focused on running to keep her spirits up, was selected as the captain of her varsity cross-country team and was also a state-qualifier.

Additionally, Marina won the Flutterfly Warrior Award, the Spirit of Giving Award, is a member of National Honor Society and was elected as Student Government president.

Inspired by a pharmacist she met during her treatment, Marina hopes to become a pharmacist at a hospital to help impact patients in a similarly positive way. Marina will be attending St. John’s University in the fall and hopes to show people that despite one’s struggles, they can still work hard to accomplish their dreams.

Literary Magic Fourth-graders enrolled in Karen Pitka’s class at Connetquot Central School District’s Helen B. Duffield Elementary School recently displayed both their acting capabilities and superior reading skills during the class’ “Reader’s Theater Publishing and Performance Presentation.”

During each of the performances, students

assumed the role of popular story book characters and acted out humorous scenarios for the family, school staff and administrators in attendance. The skits performed during the afternoon included “Three Little Elephants,” “Three Elves & Young Stu Baker,” “Little Late Riding Hood,” “Claynocchio,” “Cheetah and the Sloth” and

“Popsicle Boy.” At the conclusion of the wonderful performances, the students invited their family members back to their desks where they were able to share their published writing portfolio, which included original pieces of poetry along with Units of Study writing pieces.

The Middle Country Central School District’s Newfield High School Varsity Leaders and DECA students recently volunteered their time to build houses for Habitat for Humanity in Bay Shore. This not only served as a charitable event but a wide-range team building exercise for all students involved.

Participants were assigned a group with each group performing a specific task, including digging trenches from the house to the street, digging holes for fences and cleaning up debris around the house.

The students learned construction skills as well as the vital skills it takes to work together in order to complete a goal. Partaking

in events like these further the District’s initiative to give back and teach students the importance of helping their fellow community members. The District aims to teach its students valuable life skills and lessons useful outside of the regular classroom curriculum.

Longwood High School Moot Court Club recently entered three teams to compete in the Long Island Civil Law Moot Court Oneon-One Tournament with all three moving onto the quarterfinal round and two teams securing a first place championship and second place finalist.

The island-wide mock trial competition held at Northport High School hosted teams from throughout Long Island with each school entering two to three teams comprised of two attorneys

and one witness per team.

After securing semifinals, the two Longwood teams moved on to the final round in which the two teams competed against one another.

This achievement is the first time in the school’s successful history that each of the three groups moved onto final rounds, as well as the first time that Longwood Moot Court Club took home both first and second place awards at the same tournament.

Spring Into Reading The Middle Country Central School District recently hosted its third annual literacy event to celebrate and encourage literacy throughout the District’s ten elementary schools. The night, titled “Spring into Literacy!”

- is held each year to provide the District’s youngest students an unforgettable night in which reading and writing

come to life. The evening featured three sessions filled with an assortment of workshops focused on engaging students through popular literary works and practicing their reading and writing skills.

Coinciding with the informative and engaging workshop, was a poetry café in the school library – allowing the young writers to recite their self-written

poetry to an adoring audience. Additionally, a young authors’ showcase was held in the cafeteria giving students the opportunity to showcase a story they wrote during the 2017-2018 school year.

The District continues to host engaging afterschool educational events, providing a platform for students to share their creative accomplishments.

Community Night Takes Flight During a collaborative display of community, family and friends, Wenonah Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District transformed its classrooms into a collection of informative activities for all to enjoy as part of its annual community night held on April 19th.

The theme for this year’s community night was “The Air Around Us” and was the basis for each of the exciting activities taking place throughout the building. As part of the theme, students engaged in a number of lessons during classroom instruction that focused on a wide range of careers and concepts involving air.

of the Liberty Balloon Company from Groveland, New York. Teitsworth performed a partial inflation demonstration from which students learned how a balloon reacts to wind. During the introduction to ballooning, students learned about the importance of weather, physics and aviation concepts that contribute to a balloon’s successful flight.

On the night of the event, the school cafeteria was lined with booths represented by local vendors and community members who have careers associated with air. Students and their families visited booths led

by BeeWitched Bee Local Honey and Bee Products, CPI Aerostructures, Patient AirLift Services, St. Charles Hospital CPR educators and a commercial airline pilot, among many others.

Around the building, students had the opportunity to fly a plane using a flight simulator with help from private pilot Brian Schulman, Skype with meteorologist Chris Bruin from The Weather Channel, learn how sound waves move through the air and view air-themed projects created by students on each grade level. The fun continued at multiple other stations where students spoke with scuba divers, learned about birds and bird feeders, crafted egg carton helicopters and constructed paper airplanes.

In addition to the night’s festivities, the student chorus put on a perfect performance of air-themed songs, including “Defying Gravity” from the worldrenowned Broadway musical “Wicked.”

Corporate employees and community members participated in the 12th annual Walk/Run for Friends of Karen at the Long Island Marathon, on May 5th and 6th at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow. This year’s events included a 5K Walk/Run on Saturday, May 5th and 10K, half and full marathons on Sunday.

Hundreds of Friends of Karen supporters are enthusiastic and proud to be part of a team that helps families who turn to the NY tri-state organization for assistance when a child is diagnosed with cancer or another life-threatening illness.

by Evelyn Anderson, a former Friends of Karen mother, who wanted to celebrate her son Luke’s life by running a race in his honor. Luke was diagnosed with leukemia as a toddler and is now sixteen and has participated in the 5K for the past five years.

In the years since its inception, the Walk/Run has grown to include close to 150 participants on the team, corporate sponsors and hundreds of supporters throughout the country. Funds raised from the Walk/Run will directly benefit families who are assisted by Friends of Karen’s Family Support program which helps provide services by a team of dedicated professionals –

social workers, expressive arts therapists, and child life specialists – to ensure that families never have to make this difficult journey alone.

“This outpouring of support for the work we do is heartwarming,” said Nancy Mariano, Regional Director of Friends of Karen. “We are so grateful for all those who support our efforts and share in the joy when we all cross that finish line together – for Luke and the hundreds of other Friends of Karen children and their families we help every day.”

Brookhaven Learning Center and the Samoset Middle School locations are both Eastern Suffolk BOCES sites that provide services to students with special education needs.

Siracusano taught students how to recycle and repurpose faded construction paper into something novel. Each student chose a color of

construction paper and added it to a bucket of water, turning it to pulp.

They used a screen to scoop the pulp from the bucket and reshape the pulp into a new sheet of paper. Next, students removed extra water from the paper with a sponge and placed their sheets on the classroom window panes to dry.

Lastly, they cut the newly dried paper into picture frames, decorated them with flowers and added an image of themselves.

“These steps showed students cause and effect, allowed them to follow sequential directions and provided sensory fun as they put their hands into a wet bucket of pulp,” explained Siracusano.

“The lesson was engaging, provided skills training and produced a lovely Mother’s Day gift.”

The students worked side-by-side with Chef Matthews in the kitchen as she progressed through each step of the demonstration, pointing out details and incorporating cultural information about Japanese cuisine.

A three-step method known as fry-steam-fry is used to cook gyoza.

The bottoms are seared in a shallow pan with oil, then steamed after water is added and the pan is

covered. Lastly, the lid is removed so they the remaining water cooks off and the gyoza fry for a second time. In Japan, it’s popular to serve gyoza upside down on a platter to highlight their crunchy brown bottoms.

“Hands on demonstrations from a professional who also incorporates background information into the lesson are great teaching vehicles for my students. They put their skills to use preparing something new, practiced following a recipe and learned about the history of the dish,” said Culinary Careers Teacher Barry Rosenthal.

Chef Matthews made the dough for the dumpling wrappers; prepared two types of filling (vegetarian and pork); showed students the proper way to stuff, pleat and seal the wrappers; and then cook and serve the dumplings. She also demonstrated how to make the dipping sauce.
