Creative Expressions Cathedral Of The Trees The Gallery

Featuring Poetry And Photos Submitted By Our Readers!

By: Gene McParland, North Babylon In the depths of the woods within the cathedral of the trees, listening to the hymns of life, I stand in silent adoration.

Send Us Your Best Pics To Be Featured

Tree branches rise toward the heavens, arms of the supplicants moving in the breeze; an African church congregation swaying to the gospel music of glory. A choir of birds and insects join voices in a Gregorian chant of love and praise. No stained glass windows needed to sanctify the light; the light of grace bathes me.

Praying from the soul not for gold or fortune, but offering prayers of love and thanksgiving for the present moment joy that I am part of in communion with the One. And in the silence, silhouetted by the setting sun, I say vespers. A sudden parting of the living canopy; I am engulfed in brilliant radiance; a transubstantiation of my spirit into the god light.

I am complete, at peace. The cathedral echoes with my hymn of love.

in the Eric Martinsen Performing Arts Center. The evening’s display of outstanding student skill and creativity is a credit to the consistent support of the Bohemia, Ronkonkoma and Oakdales communities. Many a parent, and grandparent, could be seen proudly pointing out a project their ‘child’ had on display. Each school within the district had the opportunity to ‘showcase’ their students’ art projects, and many

high school classrooms had students working, and explaining the processes they used in completing their work. Many of the district’s principals, central office administrators and members of the Board of Education were on hand to congratulate the students, and teachers, for their inspirational effort on this very proud night for Connetquot residents.

A s s e m b l y m a n Hennessey joined the chamber at a networking meeting to recognize Kelly Lupoli, the Medford Chamber’s 2013 Member of the Year. Ms. Lupoli is recognized by her fellow chamber members as being integral in moving Country Fair Entertainment Park forward as one of the area’s significant attractions and as being a true team player and advocate for the entire Chamber membership. “The Medford Chamber of Commerce has grown and become such a cohesive force within the Medford business community and the community at large. A strong business community is the backbone for a community that thrives,” said Assemblyman Hennessey.

As I sit here on deadline, writing my column at the eleventh hour – as usual – is it wrong that the only thought I have is how I would rather be lying on the beach, soaking up the sun, on this fine spring day? Nothing against work – it just tends to conflict with the nice weather, you know? Sure, summer isn’t even officially underway yet, but the signs are everywhere. Concert schedules are out, vacations are being planned, baseball is in full swing – before you know it, it will be time to break out the

BBQ and open the pool for the first summer soiree. School? Work? Eh, plenty of time for that in the winter. Now it’s just a matter of coordinating all those fun summer plans, which is often easier said than done. Is it just me, or has it become increasingly difficult to set anything in stone? No matter the amount of advance notice, things always seem to fall through at the last second. Me, when I make plans, I stick with them. Barring an unexpected emergency, there is really no legitimate reason to cancel on someone. Call it a pet peeve, but there’s nothing worse

than looking forward to something only to have it cancelled. Kind of makes you not want to even bother. It’s almost better to play it by ear, see how it goes… and if things fall into place – great. If not, at least you didn’t waste your time getting your hopes up, right? I think that will be my mantra for this summer. Nice and relaxing. No stress, no aggravation, just enjoyment. And if, when all is said and done, that means lying on the beach by myself…so be it. I can think of worse things. See ya on the sand!

He shared several anecdotes about the agency’s antiterrorism work, and recent terror attack in Boston. While he was not sent to Boston, several agents from the New York office

were sent to help with the investigation. He assured the students that the study of computer technology, the potential of internet communication, and fluency in foreign languages would open

many doors for them once they graduated. This very Special Agent of the FBI is a source of pride, not only to his family, but to his former teachers, and the entire Connetquot community.

The Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA) has again helped get this season underway by becoming a sponsor, and providing financial support for the league, and the children of the Connetquot School District. Sponsor banners are prominently displayed on the outfield fences of the beautifully manicured fields, located adjacent to the Duffield Elementary School, in Ronkonkoma. The season got underway on April 13th with the Opening Day parade, and a full schedule of games. CTA President Anthony Felicio, Jr., said that the organization “Is proud to sponsor the youth of our community. Certificates Of Congratulations

On Tuesday, May 7th, Councilwoman Connie Kepert and the Town Board presented Certificates of Congratulations to Manuel Cruz, Jake Soriano, Daniel Pritchard, and Thomas Hughes for their achievements. Manuel Cruz is a 10 year-old fourth grade student at the Charles E. Walters Elementary School who was appointed as the Arthritis Foundation’s Youth Ambassador for the Northeast Region and awarded a scholarship to attend the National Arthritis Foundation’s Advocacy Summit. Manuel was diagnosed with Juvenile Arthritis when he was only five months old and for two years he has been advocating for victims of the disease. As a Youth Ambassador, Manuel has advocated before the United States Senate for $5 million in funding for Pediatric Rheumatology Specialty Programs as well as legislation that would provide scholarships to doctors who choose to study Rheumatology and work in less populated areas. In addition to being appointed

Youth Ambassador, Manuel has been honored by Newsday and was the Youth Honoree of the 2010 Long Island Arthritis Walk. “Congratulations to Manuel for receiving this prestigious recognition and appointment by the Arthritis Foundation. Manual has worked so hard to advocate for those suffering with Arthritis and has raised over $12,000 for his local Long Island Arthritis Foundation chapter in Hicksville,” stated Councilwoman Kepert. Longwood High School Junior Jake Soriano’s design was chosen, by a vote of the entire student body, as the lion logo for the new Longwood High School multi-use synthetic field. Seniors Daniel Pritchard and Thomas Hughes were runners-up. About 25 works of art were submitted and voted on by a committee comprised of student leaders, artists, athletes, teachers, and administrators. “Congratulations to Jake, Daniel and Thomas for submitting great designs, and for being part of the pride,” stated Councilwoman Kepert.

Bracelets Of Love

Ms. Sue White, Principal of Connetquot’s John Pearl Elementary School, located in Bohemia, recently visited students involved in creating jewelry for their friends at the local Arbors Assisted Living facility. These Bracelets of Love were created by students using old magazines, glue, and lots of love, as part of this community service project.

According to Art teacher Ms. Sheila Higgins, “Students in grades 3-5 cut up the magazines, and rolled the colorful strips of paper into small delicate beads. Students then used those colorful beads to create bracelets and necklaces for our senior friends at Arbors.” Ms. White explained that the project had a two-fold goal to “… demonstrate

an act of kindness for our neighbors, and to help protect the environment.” By recycling the magazines, John Pearl youngsters are reducing the amount of ‘trash’ in our landfills, while eliminate paper waste in the community. These ‘Bracelets of Love’ create lots of love for both the environment, and their friends at Arbors.

Monday, May 20th, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Vice President Tom Casey will talk about the “other Long Island” as seen on the Greenbelt Trail. ***

For information, contact 631.567.5079. The library is located at 760 Ocean Avenue in Bohemia.

Guide Dog Visitors

Ms. Sue White, Principal of Connetquot’s John Pearl Elementary School in Bohemia introduced Mrs. Linda Jones and her friends “Seemore” and “Hula” on March 26th. YFS Coordinator Mrs. Donna Leonardi arranged this visit so that Mrs. Jones could explain how the Guide Dog Foundation of Smithtown helps the

physically impaired, as well as blind clients. Mrs. Jones talked to the excited youngsters about how their organization trains dogs such as Seemore and Hula to be helpful companions. These tranquil, friendly, dogs are also used to help veterans returning from duty in Iraq and Afghanistan. After her presentation Mrs.

Jones answered student questions, and allowed the youngsters to pet these wonderful guide dogs. Ms. White and Mrs. Leonardi joined the students in thanking Mrs. Jones, Seemore and Hula for visiting with them, and explaining the important role they play in so many people’s lives.
