Of Memories Made & Yet To Come By: Jamie Lynn Ryan As I get ready to head off to a dear friend’s graduation on this fine spring afternoon, I am reminded of a similarly lovely day 11 years ago when I donned a cap and gown to receive my BFA in Journalism from C.W. Post.

The four years spent on that sprawling campus in Upper Brookville were full of fond memories… reading Leaves of Grass on the lawn in front of the Philosophy building, strolling through the Chipmunk Trail on the way to class, lounging on the Great Lawn with friends, studying in the Honors

Lounge, aimlessly wandering through the library’s book stacks...

Being a commuter student, the challenge was always to assimilate into campus life, a task made much easier by my involvement in the Honors Program. Many a day was spent planning events, fundraising, working on our very own newsletter, The Athena, and networking with the best and the brightest administrators, professors and students.

Perhaps the greatest benefit, though, was the lasting friendships made within the walls of that lounge, those forged on the first day of

Freshman Seminar that have endured until today, 15 years later. As a junior and senior, I was fortunate enough to serve as a Peer Mentor, leading my very own Freshman Seminar classes, and bearing witness to the next generation of blossoming friendships.

Which brings me back to today, as one of those “first friends” prepares to accept a Masters Degree on the very same campus, under the big tent on the famed Great Lawn, and sets out to embark on the next stage of her career. What an exciting moment, what a memorable journey… one that, in so many ways, is just beginning.

THERAPY DOG VISIT - Connetquot Central School District Cherokee Street Elementary School recently welcomed four therapy dogs, Maureen, Orlagh, Nefertiti and Sadie, along with their handlers for a special assembly about the purpose of therapy dogs. The visit coincides with a three-week educational program when kindergarten students learn about the responsibilities of owning a dog, safety around dogs and the many types of jobs dogs have including police dogs, detection dogs, assistance dogs, guide dogs and therapy dogs.

WWII Weekend The Museum of American Armor at Old Bethpage Village Restoration, 1303 Round Swamp Road, Old Bethpage becomes an embattled European countryside of 1945 during the weekend of May 17th and 18th between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. as World War II armor advances down country lanes and living historians maneuver across open fields before thousands of visitors during the 70th anniversary of the end of that epic conflict.

Admission is $10 for adults, $7 for seniors and veterans and children between the ages of 5 and 12. Active duty military personnel with I.D. are admitted for free.

Presentations will include tactical military exercises, displays of period weapons and an armor parade that includes a Sherman tank, armored cars and halftracks.

A memorial service will be held at Noon on both Saturday and Sunday to honor all American servicemen and women who have given their lives in the defense of freedom.

Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano stated, “The ability to create an armored column that replicates the sights and sounds of American forces during World War II is one of the most compelling educational tools we have to recount the story of our G.I.s’ courage, valor and sacrifice. Place it in this setting of vintage farmhouses and country roads so reminiscent of the WWII era European countryside, and you have created a virtual time machine that creates indelible memories for visitors who begin to appreciate the heroes in their own families.”

and brings scores of living historians together to demonstrate tactics, coupled with an operational armor collection unseen in the northeast.

TAKING A TRIP - First grade students from Connetquot Central School District’s Edith L. Slocum Elementary School recently welcomed Christina Godfrey of the Long Island Center for the Arts & Sciences sponsored by the Edith L. Slocum Elementary School PTA. Sixty-five first grade students learned about the planets that make up the solar system through a multi-media presentation, Q&A session, games and hands-on projects. Students also had the opportunity to create a colorful craft project identifying the planets, which they took home to their parents.

DISABILITY AWARENESS - Connetquot Central School District’s Edward J. Bosti Elementary School fifth grade students recently welcomed Mr. Lopez, owner of the Inclusive Sports and Fitness (ISF) gym, and students from Stony Brook University during an assembly which focused on disability awareness. The fifth grade students were shown the capabilities and characteristics people with disabilities have to be admired and respected. The assembly aimed to create awareness and sensitivity towards people with disabilities and for students to learn about the importance of support towards others.

Connetquot Central School District OakdaleBohemia Middle School (OBMS) Music Honor Society members recently met with students from every elementary school in the district to help them prepare for the upcoming New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) Music Festival.

The OBMS music students mentored the elementary students by assisting them in practicing their scales, solos and sight reading exercises.

NYSSMA is an organization that evaluates student musicians throughout the entire state of New York from elementary school to high school.

Each spring, students register through their school music programs to attend the NYSSMA Evaluation Festivals where they are judged on a number of criteria like tone, technique, accuracy, interpretation and sight reading. Students can be evaluated for a myriad of

instruments including voice, piano, strings, woodwind/brasses and percussion. These festivals take place at local middle schools and high schools within the fifteen different NYSSMA zones.

The day of mentoring not only fostered a sense of community between the students of the Connetquot Central School District but also strengthened the musical talent within the district.

MARCH OF DIMES WALK - On Sunday, May 3rd, the Annual Suffolk County Chapter March of Dimes Walk was held at the Town’s Holtsville Wildlife and Ecology Center. HOOPS FOR TROOPS - Connetquot Central School District Connetquot High School’s National Honor Society recently hosted “Hoops for Troops” basketball tournament to benefit the Wounded Warrior Project. The Connetquot honor students divided into 16 teams of five players to compete in the tournament. Each team picked a color or theme and battled to advance through the “Sweet Sixteen,” to the “Elite Eight,” “Final Four” and, finally, the championship game.

Greening Brookhaven On Friday, May 8th, from 4 to 6 p.m., Supervisor Ed Romaine will hold another “Free Tree Giveaway” as part of his “Greening Brookhaven” initiative.

The goal of the initiative is to distribute and plant 10,000 trees seedlings by 2020, the same goal date for the Supervisor’s Green Energy & Sustainability initiative for Town facilities announced in his 2015 State of the Town Address.

In addition to the free tree seedlings, free mulch and compost will be available. All will be distributed on a first come, first served basis while supplies last. Proof of residency is required.

Mulch and compost is not bagged, so residents must provide their own containers and load the materials themselves into their vehicles. Town Hall is located at One

I Did The Grid On Saturday, May 23rd, the eighth annual Cpl Christopher G. Scherer “I Did the Grid” 4 Mile Competitive Run, 1 Mile Fun Run, and 4 Mile Recreational Run / Walk will be taking place on the streets of East Northport.

On July 21st, 2007, Christopher Schererm who was a Corporal in the Marine Corpsm lost his life while serving our Country in the Al Anbar Province of Iraq. He was born and raised in East Northport and grew up playing in the neighborhood that he fondly referred to as ‘The Grid.’ On the first day of Memorial Day weekend, participants of all ages can experience four miles of the [grid] streets of East Northport while running, jogging or walking from the starting and ending location at Pulaski Road School.

On the morning of the race, it is asked that you to promise not to forget, nor let your children or their children forget, that Chris

and his fellow warriors died so that we might live free. To honor Chris and all of the men and women who have given their lives in service to the United States of America, it is asked that you give up any personal awards for this day. Instead, each bib will have the printed names of fallen military from either Operation Enduring Freedom or Operation Iraqi Freedom. Each participant will carry that name and, upon completion of the course, will ring a bell to signify that the Airman, Coast Guardsman, Sailor, Soldier or Marine named on the bib will be remembered for making the ultimate sacrifice to protect our freedoms.

Comedy A Serious Success

Options for Community Living’s Comedy Night fundraising event at the Brokerage Comedy Club in Bellmore was the first of more “serious” successes to come. More than 100 employees and friends came out to support Options, while enjoying the comedic talents of Eric Lyden.

In addition to the comedy show, guests had an opportunity to bid on gift baskets, which included donations from Martha Clara Vineyards, Uncle Giuseppe’s and many other area retailers. The Comedy Night raised more than $3,800, which will be used to support Options’ vital programs that provide

housing and services for Long Islanders in need.

“We all had a great night!” said Yolanda Robano-Gross, Options’ executive director. “We sold out of all of our tickets, and we had wonderful donated prizes to raffle. It was a thoroughly entertaining evening and a complete success for all involved.”

SPRING MUSIC ASSEMBLY - Connetquot Central School District Edward J. Bosti Elementary School students performed their 2015 Spring Music Assembly for fellow students, teachers, family, staff and “grandfriends” from the Arbors’ Assisted Living facility. Captain Bill Barker, owner of Sea Tow Eastern Long Island, and his team member Captain Garrett Moore each received a an award from the U.S. Coast Guard for the swift and decisive actions they took in an incident involving a runaway boat in Greenport Harbor last year, stopping the boat and preventing the serious injuries that it might have caused.

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone announced today that more than 1,100 runners have registered for the Inaugural Suffolk County Marathon & Half Marathon in Support of Our Veterans. The marathon will take place on Sunday, September 13th, and start in Heckscher State Park in East Islip.

“We are extremely pleased with the number of runners who have signed up to be part of this day so far,” said County Executive Steve Bellone. “This a wonderful opportunity to highlight all of the amenities Suffolk County has to offer as well as collaboratively raise funds to directly support veteran services right here in

Suffolk County.”

The marathon route will highlight Suffolk County’s South Shore, highlighting the region’s downtowns while aiming to boost local economies including Oakdale, Sayville, Patchogue, Blue Point and Bayport.

Runners who are interested in participating in the marathon and half marathon are encouraged to register at www. suffolkmarathon.com/ registration. A special discount is available for all active military duty personnel and veterans, including U.S. Naval Sea Cadets and Gold Star Families.

Runners are also invited to participate in Suffolk

A chorus of cheers and bagpipers could be heard as patients with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig’s disease) rode onto the Stony Brook University Campus in their power wheelchairs at the annual Ride for Life event.

Stony Brook University athletes escorted the Riders who rode to Stony Brook to take part in the Pinwheel Remembrance Ceremony on May 2nd, the cornerstone event of the 12-day power wheelchair Ride for Life trek across Long Island that ends in Manhattan on May 9th.

Christopher Pendergast, President and Founder of Ride for Life, and a 22-year ALS patient and advocate, led the way with six other ALS patients as they rode to the ceremony area, where 6,000 pinwheels were displayed. The pinwheels symbolize the lives lost to ALS each year. At the Pinwheel Remembrance Ceremony, the names of 90 patients lost to ALS were read aloud. The 90 names, requested by their

family members to be read, also represent the fact that every 90 minutes someone dies from ALS. A candle was lit for each individual in their memory.

Supporters from Stony Brook Medicine gathered with the family and friends of patients to celebrate hope – as symbolized by the pinwheels that a cure for ALS is ‘blowin in the wind.’

“ALS is a remarkable challenge to physicians and neuroscientists, but this is an exciting time in the Neurosciences and through research we continue to seek better treatments and hopefully a cure,” said Kenneth Kaushansky, MD, Senior Vice President, Health Sciences, and Dean of the Stony Brook University School of Medicine. “We are all here today to join together in hope and strive to make ALS a tragedy of the past.”
