The one-call center then provides the information to the utility companies, which send representatives to mark the locations of nearby underground lines with flags, paint or both. Once lines have been properly marked and confirmation from all of the utility owners is received, projects may proceed as long as caution is used around the marked areas.

Here’s important information to consider: · Calling 811 before digging reduces the chances of damaging an underground line to less than 1%. · Underground gas and electric lines are everywhere, even on private properties. These facilities can be easily damaged if dug into, with the potential to cause serious injuries.

Digging into these lines can also disrupt vital utility services, resulting in costly delays, expensive repairs and environmental or property damage.

Whether the job is a major home improvement project or something as simple as a fence or mailbox post, a call to 811 must be placed beforehand to determine where it’s safe to dig.

SEG Long Island reminds customers, contractors and excavators to always call 811 before digging to ensure underground pipelines, conduits, wires and cables are properly marked out.

Every digging project, even a small project like planting a tree or building a deck, requires a call to 811. It’s the law. The call is free and the mark-out service is free. The call must be made whether the job is being performed by a professional or a doit-yourselfer. Striking an underground electrical line can cause serious injury and outages, and result in repair costs and fines.

“Spring’s warmer temperatures make it a perfect time for starting improvements to our homes and businesses.

Calling 811 ahead of time helps protect underground utility lines and, more importantly, the safety of anyone digging,” said Michael Sullivan, PSEG Long Island’s vice president of Transmission and Distribution Operations.

“We are glad to see that our customers are getting the message.

Last year there were more than 240,000 mark-out requests in our service area, and so far this year, there have been more than 48,000 requests to 811.”

According to Common Ground Alliance, a member-driven association of nearly 1,800 individuals and 250 member companies in every facet of the underground utility industry, 40% of active diggers in North America do not call 811 because they think their project is too shallow to require it. All digging projects require a call to 811.

Safety First With DIY Electrical Work

ome improvement projects can help homeowners transform their homes. Such projects are costly, but many homeowners save money by doing some, if not all, of the work themselves.

The Electrical Safety Foundation International, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting electrical safety, recommends that homeowners leave electrical work to the professionals. Licensed electricians are well-trained, whereas homeowners may not be skilled enough to avoid accidents or injuries, which can prove fatal when working with electricity.

Homeowners who take the do-it-yourself route with electrical work should consider these safety tips, courtesy of the ESFI, before beginning a home electrical project.

• Learn your home electrical system. Home electrical systems may include power lines, electric meters, service panels, subpanels, wiring, and more. These systems are complex, and homeowners who intend to do some DIY electrical work should familiarize themselves with their home electrical systems prior to beginning any work. The ESFI notes that knowledge of their home electrical systems can help homeowners more safely navigate them and make maintenance easier.

• Honestly assess your skills. An honest assessment of skills is absolutely necessary prior to working on an electrical system. According to the National Safety Council, injuries relating to electrical incidents typically fall into one of four categories: electrical shock, electrocution, falls, and burns.

Each of these injuries is significant.

For example, electric shock, which occurs when electrical current passes over or through a person’s body, involves burns, abnormal heart rhythm and unconsciousness. Given the potential for serious injury, the ESFI urges homeowners to make an honest assessment of their skills before they begin working on their home’s electrical systems. Little or no experience working with electrical systems should be considered a significant hurdle to any DIY project.

• Turn the power off. It’s essential that the power to the circuit that will be worked on be turned off prior to starting any work. This can be accomplished by switching off the circuit breaker in the main service panel.

Similarly, when working on appliances or lamps, make sure the products are unplugged prior to working on them.

• Do not touch plumbing or gas pipes when doing electrical work.

The experts at the Indiana Electric Cooperative note that the risk for electrocution is significant when water comes in contact with electricity. It’s imperative that homeowners do not touch plumbing and gas pipes when performing a DIY electrical project. Professionals know how to work around such pipes while minimizing their risk for electric shock or worse, and homeowners must familiarize themselves with the techniques professionals rely on to stay safe if they intend to begin DIY electrical projects.

Homeowners are best served by leaving electrical work to the professionals. However, those who insist on doing such work themselves should do their homework and get to know their systems and safety protocols prior to beginning a project.

Middle County Boys Lacrosse Team Raises Money For Communication Boards On Monday, April 4, the Middle Country Boys Varsity Lacrosse team collaborated with the Special Education Department to host a Goals of Giving event at Centereach High School.

The team played against the Boys Varsity Lacrosse team from North Babylon.

“Our athletes, students, and staff members did an amazing job spreading the word and raising funds to help our students with disabilities,” said Dr. Roberta Gerold, superintendent of schools.

“This is what our school district is about, coming together to give back to our community. It was heartwarming to see all those who took the time to participate and help make this event possible!”

The money raised at the Goals of Giving event will go to build communication boards for Stagecoach Elementary School, Eugene Auer Memorial Elementary School, North Coleman Road Elementary School, and Hawkins Path Elementary School. The communication boards

will be placed in the schools’ playgrounds for students with disabilities.

These boards will help non-verbal students communicate with their peers and teachers while promoting an inclusive environment for all. Many of these students rely on an electronic device to communicate their wants and needs and the boards will allow them to play in their school’s playground when their own devices are not easily accessible.

The Goals of Giving event raised a total of $8,730.65.

Security lighting Flood lights and security lights are a good investment for those who want to beef up visibility and security around the home. These lights are high-intensity and designed to illuminate large areas.

The brightness and reach can serve as a preventive measure to keep animals and even criminals away. Motion-sensor lights will immediately engage if something crosses the path of the sensor.

Some lights will remain on from dusk until dawn. Lowes Home Improvement suggests using the correct wattage on outdoor security lights so they flood an area thoroughly without affecting neighboring properties.

Wall, post and ceiling lights Outdoor lighting fixtures beyond security options come in a variety of styles, according to Lamps USA. Wall lights are mounted to the outdoor wall of the home.

These typically flank doorways or the garage. Post lights are often installed on the posts of decks and porches, or are free-standing on properties, providing visibility but also style. Ceiling-mounted lights may be above doorways or installed in any structure that has an overhead area. First Annual DFQ 22 Mile Duathlon To Be Held May 21 On May 21, 2022 Project9line will host the First Annual DFQ 22 Mile Duathlon at Veterans Memorial Park in Calverton, New York. This first of its kind duathlon will consist of a 9 mile run, followed by a 9 mile ruck and concluding with a 4 mile run. Anyone is able to participate, whether or not you have served our country.

For veterans, the transition to civilian life can be extremely difficult, as they tend to go from structure and routine to a lifestyle that is much less rigid. Additionally, the camaraderie they once had may be quickly depleted once they find themselves going through life as a regular civilian. The unfortunate truth is that around 20 veterans a day commit suicide.

The 9 mile run is dedicated to those members of the armed services that we’ve

lost in combat. The 9 mile ruck is to remember those lost to suicide. The final 4 mile run is dedicated to each runner, so they can celebrate their achievements and reflect on some things they have not quit on.

As a non-profit organization, Project9line supports veterans by providing avenues for them to communicate their experiences and express themselves through the arts and activities. This 22 Mile Duathlon is a way for them to show that they will never quit supporting the troops and our veterans, and it will start at precisely 7:12am to honor a veteran who committed suicide on July 12, 2011.

If you are looking to participate, you can register online up until May 20, 2022 for $150. If you want to participate, but need the funds to do so, there is a fundraising option that

you can choose online when registering, which allows you to register for $0, however you will need to fundraise a minimum of $450 by May 21, 2022. Each participant will receive a race medal, long sleeve shirt and a windbreaker. The first male and first female to finish the duathlon will also receive a DFQ Championship Belt.

Additionally, there will be a “Veteran Service Organization Village” at the event, consisting of various booths occupied by organizations that help veterans. Suffolk County Council, Boy Scouts Of America, Announces Ribbon Cutting Of Council Headquarters In Farmingville Town of Brookhaven Supervisor Edward Romaine along with Councilman Neil Foley welcomed the Scouts to One Independence Hill. They both shared their appreciation of Scouting. Suffolk County Sheriff Errol Toulon, Jr. expressed his appreciation for the Scouts and is eager to expand the Scouts and the Sheriff’s Office partnership.

David Hunt, Council President, shared his excitement with the guests about our new Council Office and several upcoming events such as the Youth Leadership Conference which will be held on June 11th at St Joseph’s University and the 2023 Council Camporee. LEGISLATOR NICK CARACAPPA UNVEILS NEW SIGN - On Saturday, April 23, 2022, Suffolk County Legislator and Majority Leader Nick Caracappa hosted a beautiful ceremony to unveil the new sign that signifies the renaming of Farmingville Hills County Park on Portion Road to “Thomas Muratore County Park at Farmingville Hills.”

Legislator Caracappa, who currently serves the Fourth Legislative District where the late Muratore served from 2010-2020, introduced a bill that was adopted unanimously in June of 2021. The bill states: “It would be fitting to name Farmingville Hills County Park in honor of Thomas Muratore to acknowledge his contributions to Suffolk County as someone who dedicated his entire life to public service and reached across the aisle to better the lives of County residents, especially when it came to working together to protect families, our veterans and our quality of life.”

Legislator Caracappa was joined by his colleagues in government, law enforcement, civic and chamber groups, veterans, Boy Scouts, as well as Mr. Muratore’s wife Linda, and many friends and former co-workers.

“This weekend’s turnout was a testament to the type of man Tom was,” stated Legislator Caracappa. “He had a lifelong career serving and protecting the public, and renaming this park after him will help to ensure his legacy lives on in the community he loved so much. I’d like to thank all who made this day possible, with a special thanks to the offices of the County Executive, Parks

Department, and the Presiding Officer. I know Tom was smiling down on this beautiful event.”

While much of EOC of Suffolk’s work is concentrated in Suffolk County, it also operates several programs that serve residents of both Suffolk and Nassau counties. One of those bi-county offerings is the organization’s Housing Counseling Services.

As a HUD-approved housing counseling agency, EOC of Suffolk offers a comprehensive array of housing services. Its “Mortgage Default and Foreclosure Prevention Counseling” program provides mortgage counseling for homeowners island-wide who are having difficulty maintaining their mortgage.

Many households across the country and across Long Island confront the risk of foreclosure. Last month, foreclosure filings nationwide reached the highest level since the pandemic began in March 2020. More than 30 thousand properties across the U.S. faced foreclosure, a 181 percent jump from March 2021 and a 29 percent increase from February.

It was recently reported that about 14,500 Long Island homeowners were at least three months behind on paying their mortgages. The risk of foreclosure has increased when a statewide foreclosure moratorium expired in January.

They will discuss loss mitigation options and inform homeowners of financial and legal resources available to them. Counselors can explain how homeowners can work with lenders or agencies on forbearance plans or loan modifications.

EOC of Suffolk also offers “Comprehensive Housing Counseling” that helps individuals and families achieve their dream of homeownership. The program provides one-to-one homeownership counseling and group counseling, as well as budget and credit counseling.

Finally, the organization also helps current and prospective homeowners through an online, eight-hour “Homebuyer Education Course.” The course helps enrollees determine if homeownership is right for them, how to shop for a home and how to maintain a home. Those completing the course receive a certificate that positions homebuyers to fulfill education requirements for down payment assistance programs. The certificate can also be presented to lenders. The course operates on a convenient and flexible timetable allowing participants to complete it on their own schedule.
