Stamp Out Hunger® Food Drive Returns Saturday, May 13, 2023

Island Harvest Food Bank, the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC), and the United States Postal Service (USPS) are pleased to announce the return of the annual Stamp Out Hunger®, the nation’s most extensive one-day food collection campaign. This year’s Stamp Out Hunger food drive is on Saturday. May 13, 2023, and all food collected in Nassau and Suffolk counties will benefit Island Harvest in providing much-needed supplemental food support to more than 300,000 Long Islanders who face hunger and food insecurity, including nearly one-third who are children.

“Participating in Stamp Out Hunger is easy,” says Randi Shubin Dresner, president and CEO of Island Harvest. “Generous Long Islanders are encouraged to leave nonperishable food items in a bag next to their mailbox before the regularly scheduled mail delivery on Saturday, May 13, 2023. Then, your USPS letter carrier will do the rest to help make sure that no one on

Long Island goes hungry.”

Non-perishable food items to be donated include canned goods, cereal, pasta, rice, boxed juices and shelfstable milk (please, no food or juices in glass containers).

In addition, personal care items such as toothpaste, soap, shampoo, deodorant, and disposable diapers are accepted. All goods donated on Long Island will help replenish Island Harvest’s network of food pantries, soup kitchens and other emergency feeding programs in communities throughout Long Island.

“Every donation, no matter how small, helps our neighbors who are in the unenviable position of choosing between paying for such things as housing, transportation, and medicine or putting food on the table,” said Ms. Shubin Dresner. “I am confident that the past generosity displayed by our Long Island neighbors will help make this year’s Stamp Out Hunger food drive one of the most successful.”

Due to the pandemic, the

Sachem Robotics Team Wins Award At Regional Competition

The Sachem Central School District robotics team, Aftershock, earned the Gracious Professionalism Award after competing in the Long Island Regional FIRST Robotics Competition at Hofstra University.

The Gracious Professionalism Award is given to the team that exemplifies the principles

of FIRST – fairness, humility, positivity and respect. This team demonstrates the FIRST core values and works together on and off the field of play. It was noted that Aftershock generated a program that resulted in building a network of spare parts to be redistributed back to teams on Long Island, placing the

community first. Aftershock is made up of students from both Sachem High School East and North. At the Long Island FIRST Robotics Competition, they competed against several teams from Long Island and around the globe in point-based challenges with the robot they designed and built.

Islands to help address the issue of hunger in America. On Long Island, Stamp Out Hunger brought in over 519,000 pounds of food in 2019 before the event was temporarily suspended from 2020 through 2022 due to the pandemic.

“The National Association

of Letter Carriers and the men and women we represent on Long Island are pleased to once again partner with Island Harvest in this year’s Stamp Out Hunger food collection,” said Tom Siesto, 1st Vice President, NALC Branch 6000. “Our carriers often see firsthand the pervasive issue of hunger as part of their daily rounds, and they are eager to help give back to the community and assist in helping Island Harvest Food Bank tackle this important issue.”

This year’s major sponsoring partners with Island Harvest on the NALC Stamp Out Hunger collection campaign include National Grid, JP Morgan Chase & Co., Amazon, Allstate, Bethpage Federal Credit Union, Catholic Health, Nonna’s Garden, Long Island Federation of Labor, MCN Distributors, Dime Community Bank and New York Community Bank. All donations to Stamp Out Hunger are tax-deductible because all the food collected benefits Island Harvest, a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit

organization.

Wellbridge Welcomes Oakley The Therapy Dog As Newest Team Member

Wellbridge, a Calvertonbased addiction treatment center, doubled the amount of patients it saw over the last year. Their personalized approach to care addresses the needs of patients entering treatment for the first time, as well as those who have been through rehabilitation previously and are seeking a more sustainable path to longterm recovery. Substance Use Disorder is a chronic, treatable illness and the Wellbridge approach examines the causes of a patient’s substance use and treats the whole person.

Struggling with substance use can be a lonely experience for patients, who are typically away from their friends and families.

That is why, in addition to a variety of evidence-

based treatments, established research, patient experience, quality metrics, and outcomes, Wellbridge employs the services of one four-legged, furry volunteer.

Oakley, a two year old English Labrador Retriever, is a certified therapy dog that has been the newest addition to the team. After completing an extensive training program that included time at assisted living facilities, hospitals and nursing homes, Oakley began her rounds at Wellbridge.

Each Saturday, Oakley and her owner, Wellbridge’s Krystal Keillor, spend hours working with groups of patients. Over the course of several 45 minute sessions, Oakley works her way around a circle of

seated patients, greeting each of them, often receiving belly rubs in return.

Keillor, who is a Certified Recovery Peer Advocate at Wellbridge, relies on her canine sidekick to be there as she provides supportive services and a recovery plan for patients. The comfort that Oakley provides is palpable for staff and patients.

“The patient response has been nothing short of incredible,” said Keillor. “Patients have stated that they come to the group with anxiety, stress, and depression. When they leave a group, they feel the complete opposite expressing calmness, serenity, gratitude, hopefulness, happiness.”

When not working in a group setting, Oakley is at Keillor’s

side, supplementing therapeutic visits with her soothing presence. This is particularly important during the difficult detoxification portion of patients’ stay. Withdrawal from any substance can be painful and debilitating. Moreover, many patients are missing their own pets at home while in treatment, and Oakley serves as an able stand-in.

In spite of her youth, Oakley brings advanced experience in treatment. She has been in longterm care facilities since being eight months old, previously serving at a separate treatment center in Connecticut. When she’s not working, Oakley lives with Keillor and the rest of their family in Wading River, NY.

Senator Mattera And Long Island Cares Join Together To Help Protect Pets

New York State Senator Mario R. Mattera (2nd Senate District) is proud to join with Long Island Cares to help protect pets throughout our region. To assist the organization’s 12th Annual Legislative Pet Food Drive Challenge, Senator Mattera’s district office will serve as a collection point for pet supplies to help the charity restock Baxter’s Pet Pantry to help ensure that Long Island families in need are able to care for their pets.

Long Island Cares, in partnership with the Animal Relief Fund Inc. (ARF), created Baxter’s Pet Pantry in 2009 to help pet-owning families throughout Nassau and Suffolk Counties get the supplies they need. In addition to providing pet food, the Pet Pantry offers toys, pet clothes and other pet necessities.

From now until Wednesday, May 31st,

Senator Mattera’s Office will be collecting pet supplies for cats, hamsters, dogs, fish, birds, ferrets and others. To make it convenient, a donation box will be at Senator Mattera’s District Office located at 180 East Main Street, Suite 210, Smithtown, between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Long Island Cares has stated that its most needed pet items are:

• 5 or 10 pound bags of dog and cat food

• Canned food for dogs and cats

• Dog and cat treats

• Collars and leashes

• Food For all animals including birds, fish, ferrets and hamsters

• Fish food

• Cat litter

• Small new toys

According to the organization, all donated pet

food must be unopened and in its original packaging. For health reasons, the organization will not accept opened bags, ripped bags or loose pet food.

“Anyone who has a family pet knows that they are not just animals; they are a part of the family. When a family falls on hard times, as many in our community have in the past couple of years, it is difficult for them to provide for everyone – including pets. I thank Long Island Cares for their efforts and am glad to support their efforts to help ensure that pets can stay in their homes, with their families, where they belong,” said Senator Mattera.

For additional information on Long Island Cares or Baxter’s Pet Pantry, please visit Senator Mattera’s website at mattera.nysenate. gov.

Legislator Anker Partners With Balloon Recycling Organization

“Balloon Mission”

Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker announces her partnership with Balloon Mission, a not-for-profit organization that collects and repurposes latex and mylar balloons before they become litter. Her office will provide a balloon recycling bin for drop off.

The organization’s Executive Director Cynthia Seibold comments, “We get it. People love balloons. Bright colors and big displays at a cheap cost, no wonder they’re more popular than ever! But when the fun is done, no one knows for certain where they end up or the unintended consequences they have in our world.”

Her Songs Broke Every Record, Her Story Broke Every Barrier

She was a girl from Boston with a voice from heaven, who shot through the stars from gospel choir to dance floor diva. What the world didn’t know was how Donna Summer risked it all to break through barriers, becoming the icon of an era and the inspiration for every music diva who followed. With a score featuring more than 20 of Summer’s classic hits including “Love to Love You Baby,” “Bad Girls” and “Hot Stuff,” this electric experience is a moving tribute to the voice of a generation.

JUNE 16 - JULY 16, 2023

At The Gateway Playhouse

Fill out and submit the entry form at www.longislandmediagroup.com/contest by June 9th for your chance to win!

One entry per person. Two winners will be chosen. Winners will be notified by phone or email.

According to the organization, mylar balloons are made from a thin plastic sheet, then sprayed with aluminum to give them a shiny reflective surface. Out in the environment, mylar balloons will degrade, lose their coating and turn clear like a plastic bag. While latex balloons are made from rubber, they have an added plastic to make them stay inflated longer and are not biodegradable. Plastic ribbons and balloon debris float at the top of the water column where they are ingested by animals or entangled in them. This can cause death by suffocation, starvation, or drowning.

In 2019, Legislator Anker sponsored legislation to ban the intentional release of balloons after she was made aware of the hazard

balloons cause to our sea life and environment.

“Thousands of helium balloons were being released at high school graduations, events, and celebrations. Those balloons eventually ended up on the ground, caught up in trees or electrical lines, or most likely landed in our ocean. Sea creatures and birds can become entangled in balloon debris, choke or die. People need to be aware how serious this issue is,” said Legislator Anker. “A study found that balloons are the highest risk of plastic debris for seabirds. In addition to balloons,

plastic debris kills over 100,000 sea mammals each year. With so much pollution in our ocean, we can make a difference by taking this small step to help clean up our ocean.”

One of Balloon Mission’s initiatives is to partner with the district to raise awareness and give people a chance to do better for our environment. For more information about Balloon Mission go to https://balloonmission. org/. If you would like to drop off balloons call Legislator Anker’s office at 631-854-1600.

Rumrunning in Suffolk County: Tales from Liquor Island, Thursday, May 11, 7:00 - 8:30 pm

Nicknamed “Liquor Island,” Long Island was a center of bootlegging and rumrunning for the New York metropolitan area during Prohibition. With its proximity to major markets and coastal communities for easy transit, Suffolk County was awash in illegal hooch. Smugglers bringing cases of booze from offshore often secretly hid product temporarily in local garages and sheds, leaving a bottle as a thank-you. Coded communication crisscrossed the county on shortwave radios arranging sales and logistics. Violence from criminal outfits disrupted previously quiet towns, as locals too often were swept up in dangerous unintentional engagements with

bootleggers. Join author Amy Kasuga Folk as she recounts stories from her book. No registration required.

VIRTUAL/IN-PERSON:

Invisible Labor: Women’s Work in Whaling Communities, Wednesday, May 17, 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

Long Island was at the heart of commercial whaling, the U.S.A.’s fifth most profitable industry in the 19th century. Long Island Native women ensured industry success by their labor and the mechanisms of survival they built while men were absent, at sea. In this talk, local historian Erin Becker discusses the role of Long Island Native women in this industry. This is a Zoom presentation that will be shown in the library or can be viewed from home. In-person: No registration required. Library members may register by visiting our website at www.connetquotlibrary. org.

Graham E. E. Bailey: Accidental Author, Thursday, May 18, 7:00 - 8:30 pm

During long commutes on the LIRR, the author began writing a book whose main character was inspired by an intriguing Russian man she met while adopting a child. Having struggled in school with reading and writing, she

began the book in secret, not wanting the pressure of anyone else’s awareness of her process. Graham will share with you her insights into the writing process and into following your own dream. Library members may register by visiting our website at www.connetquotlibrary. org. For additional inquiries, please call the library at 631-567-5079.

It’s time to put those old bicycles and sewing machines to good use. On Saturday, May 13 (rain or shine) from 11 am to 2 pm, Returned Peace Corps Volunteers of Long Island will hold its annual used bicycle and sewing machine collection in the parking lot of South Huntington Public Library (145 Pidgeon Hill Road, Huntington Station). The items collected will then be reconditioned by the

international non-profit Pedals for Progress (P4P) and sent to Belize.

The mission of P4P is to foster sustainable economic development by recycling bicycles and sewing machines from the US and shipping them to motivated people in the developing world. For many in the US, Belize is seen as an ideal vacation destination but beyond the beaches lies tremendous poverty. Approximately

50% of Belize’s population is children and youth below the age of nineteen. A large percentage of this population is concentrated in the urban ghettos of the south-side of Belize City, specifically in the Port Loyola area. Many of these children live in poverty and are exposed to violence, crime, and civil unrest.

Information about the P4P Belize program can be found at: https://www.p4p.

org/category/belize

This is the 19th bike/ sewing machine collection organized by Returned Peace Corps Volunteers of Long Island. To date, RPCVLI has collected 1707 bicycles and 282 sewing machines that have been distributed to Rwanda, Tanzania, Togo, Guatemala, Albania and Kosovo. amongst others.

“Members of Returned Peace Corps volunteers of Long Island see this project

as a way of continuing our commitment to support programs in developing countries,” says Kathy Williams-Ging of Huntington Station, who was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Peru and is co-coordinator of the May 13th collection..

Anyone with an adult or child’s bicycle in repairable condition or a working portable sewing machine is urged to donate the item. Since it costs $40

to collect, process, ship, rebuild and distribute each bicycle, a donation toward shipping costs is necessary (suggested minimum $20 per item). All cash and material donations are fully deductible and a receipt will be provided on site. The program does not accept “bikes for parts,” disassembled bikes or tricycles.

Signature Premier Properties And North Shore Young Professionals Partner To Support Mental Health Awareness

Signature Premier Properties and North Shore Young Professionals (NSYP) are teaming up to host a charity event and social media challenge to raise awareness and funds for mental health causes. The event will take place on June 2nd at Napper Tandy’s in Smithtown, NY, and will feature networking, games, a casino, and an open bar.

The event is being organized by Justin Soriano, a 25-year-old real estate professional and NSYP founder, who believes in the power of networking and giving back to the community. Since its inception, NSYP has raised tens of thousands of dollars for various charities, including the Smithtown Children’s Foundation and Life’s Worc. The upcoming event will benefit James Journey, a charity that supports mental health causes and offers a scholarship program for high school seniors. James Journey is named in honor of James Audley, a young man who lost his life to struggles with mental health. The charity is close to Soriano’s heart, and he hopes to raise over $10,000 at the event to support its mission.

In addition to the charity event, Signature Premier Properties and NSYP are launching a social media challenge called #BreakTheStigma. The challenge aims to encourage people to start conversations about mental health and help raise funds for James Journey through donations. To participate, all you have to do is record a video of yourself breaking an object of your choice and share it on social media using the

hashtag #BreakTheStigma. Signature Premier Properties will donate $5 for every video up to $1000, and participants are encouraged to tag @signaturepremierproperties and @northshoreyoungprofessionals on Instagram.

“We’re thrilled to be partnering with North Shore Young Professionals to support such an important cause,” said Caitlyn Morris, VP of Business Development at Signature Premier Properties. “Mental health is a critical issue that affects so many people, and we believe that by breaking the stigma and starting conversations, we can make a real difference. We encourage everyone to join us at the event and participate in the #BreakTheStigma challenge.”

The charity event and social media challenge are open to the public, and tickets for the event can be purchased online. Signature Premier Properties and NSYP are committed to making a positive impact in the community and hope to see a strong turnout for this important cause. Check out @signaturepremier on Facebook and Instagram for more information!
