In partnership with the Allied Foundation Diaper Bank, Long Island’s only diaper bank, Help Me Grow– Long Island recently donated 53,250 diapers and 43,200 baby wipes to struggling Long Island families for distribution through Island Harvest Food Bank. Even before the COVID-19 crisis, approximately one in three U.S. families experienced diaper need, a public health issue exacerbated by the growing economic and unemployment crisis caused by the pandemic.

Diaper costs are supported by a grant from The JPB Foundation through Connecticut Children’s Medical Center.

This opportunity was made available by the Help Me Grow National Center to Help Me Grow–Long Island, an initiative overseen by Docs for Tots. The diapers are secured through the National Diaper Bank Network (NDBN). As a recognized member of

NDBN, a national nonprofit, The Allied Foundation Diaper Bank is given direct access to high-quality diapers needed to help keep all babies clean, dry and healthy in their communities.

The Allied Foundation, a not-for-profit organization founded by Allied Physicians Group, based in Melville, has distributed 915,000 diapers to families in need in Suffolk, Nassau, Queens and Brooklyn since its inception in 2017. In all of 2019, the diaper bank distributed 45,000 diapers; however, because of the unprecedented demand for diapers, today the program is on track to distribute 1 million diapers in 2021 to help families who are less fortunate.

“Infants require up to 12 diapers a day, toddlers about eight making the cost as much as $80 per month, per baby. Clean, dry diapers are critical for ensuring good health to prevent illness and skin infection. More parents

are struggling and simply unable to afford them due to loss of employment or other hardship caused by the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Allied Foundation Executive Director Heather Edwards.

“No state or federal child safety-net program allocates dollars specifically for the purchase of diapers,” explained Scott Svitek, MD, Chair, Allied Foundation Board and Partner, Allied Physicians Group.

“Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, over 95 percent of the families that contact us need help with diapers,” said Melissa Passarelli, Director of Programs, Docs for Tots and Help Me Grow–Long Island Coordinator. “We have been working with our partners connecting families with diapers. This grant from the JPB Foundation allows us to get diapers into the hands of families who need them most.”

“Diapers and baby wipes are items that are in high

demand among parents struggling to make ends meet, even before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Marc Suntup, Vice President of Development, Island Harvest Food Bank.

Tots, so many parents can now provide such essential products to help keep their babies safe and healthy.”

Panther Players Return With Spring Musical

The Miller Place Panther Players returned to stage with an all-star cast for its spring production of Les Misérables: School Edition. While students took the stage, patrons opened their devices at their convenience to enjoy a pre-recorded streaming beyond the walls of Miller Place High School.

Throughout the last six months, Miller Place’s theatre students dedicated

their time after school in small groups, divided by cohorts, to rehearse their lines and become accommodated to new safety guidelines on stage. One month prior to production, the Panther Players were able to begin full cast rehearsals with its cast, crew and pit orchestra.

The Miller Place School District is incredibly proud of its 78 students; TinaMarie DeFalco, director; Terrie

Troyano, musical director; Katherine Butera, vocal director; Kristin Laudicina, assistant director; and Jenna Ely, stage manager; for streaming the production and giving the Miller Place community the opportunity to enjoy their performance virtually.

Connetquot Central School District Sports Swim/Dive Team Squeeze Past Huntington HS 89-86 Connetquot swim coach Alex Scichilione and his T-birds celebrated the team’s 89-86 win over visiting Huntington/ Whitman team on March 16. Kylie Martinez led the way by winning the 500 freestyle (5:30.66) while Jenna Drapala won the 100 backstroke (1:03.68).

The T-birds won their opening home meet of the season. The

girls’ usually compete in the Spring but, as with all section XI sports this year, the schedules have been shortened, and moved to the second half of the year.

Girls’ Varsity Volleyball Team Ends Season As League Champions And Suffolk County Finalist Connetquot High School interim head girls’ volleyball coach Karen Edwards and her Tbirds ended the 2021 season as Suffolk County League II Champions, and finalists for the Suffolk County Championship!

Connetquot has had a busy five days, having defeated Sachem (3-0) on April 20th, Commack (3-1) on the 22nd, and playing for the Suffolk

County Championship on April 24th against eventual champion Smithtown-West (3-1). As a result of New York State’s decision to cancel the state championship tournament, Connetquot is still the reigning New York State Champion (2020).

Despite the disappointment of finishing second in the championship match to Smithtown-West,

coach Edwards and her staff, the district administration and Connetquot community salute the members of the girls’ volleyball team for overcoming challenging adversity in the age of covid.

Congratulations to the Connetquot players, coaches, parents and administration for continuing the winning tradition of the girls’ varsity volleyball program!

Connetquot High School Boys’ Volleyball Program Celebrates Its Graduating Seniors

Connetquot High School boys’ varsity volleyball coach Jessica Perry brought together the players, coaches and family members on Saturday, April 17th, to recognize and thank the team’s graduating studentathletes.

Unfortunately, as a result of positive positive covid

testing, quarantining, and match cancellations, the team was kept off balance for much of the season. The seniors kept encouraging the other members of the team, and demonstrated the qualities of leadership.

Congratulations, and thank you, to the following graduating seniors for their

dedication to the Connetquot HS boys’ volleyball program, and being a source of pride for their community: Jake Riegger, Jacob Danziger, Andrew Gil, Michael Monahan, Brandan Rogalle, Tomas Reilly and Michael DiFilippo.

Hope House Ministries is a non-profit organization located in Port Jefferson. They provide compassionate, comprehensive and competent care for the poor, the marginal and the wounded among us.

This commitment is woven in the Gospel vision that all life is sacred and every human person is unique and has the right to be respected and protected. Their mission is founded in the spirit of St. Louis de Montfort, who had a commitment to the poor and the courage to do what no one else had the courage to do.

They have accomplished much over the 40+ years they have been helping others with minimal financial assistance from federal, state or county agencies. They depend on the generosity of private contributions, fundraising events and corporate donations.

Hope House Ministries services people in both Nassau County and Suffolk County, offering services free of charge. Together, their staff and volunteers have created an empowering sense of family and community that are the change agents, helping young people grow in self-discipline, critical thinking, problem solving skills and personal responsibility.

Hope House Ministries was founded by Fr. Francis Pizzarelli, SMM, LCSW-R, ACSW, DCSW. 41 years ago, Fr. Francis discovered hundreds of youth who were homeless, experiencing mental health issues and living with addictions and it wasn’t long before he realized that neither government nor faith communities were doing enough to meet the crisis of homelessness. He formed Hope House Ministries and it has grown into an amazing organization that has provided for the needs of over 500,000 individuals.

many programs, such as their Community House, Hope Academy, Montfort Therapeutic Residence, Pax Christi Hospitality Center, St. Maximillian Kolbe Outpatient Addictions Treatment Center, Wisdom House and much more.
