Recently, Legislator Leslie Kennedy had the opportunity to hike The Original Walking Tours of Lake Ronkonkoma, which is led by local author and historian Dale Spencer.

As its name suggests, the walking tour takes participants on a walk

Proceeds from the Stars of Stony Brook Gala also generate financial assistance for many of Stony Brook’s most talented students. In his remarks, Foundation Chair and IMAX President Richard Gelfond ‘76 said Stony Brook offers talented, deserving students a pathway to a world they might never have been part of. In fact, just this year a study led by the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research ranked Stony Brook among the top 10 public and private institutions in the US as an engine of income mobility.

Through continual research and discovery, Stony Brook University Cancer Center is on the forefront of cancer care. In the new Kavita and Lalit Bahl Center for Metabolomics and Imaging, for instance, Dr. Yusuf Hannun and Dr. Lina Obeid are receiving international recognition for their pioneering studies in lipid metabolism and cancer.

Their work is changing what is known about the role lipid metabolism plays in cancer and brings us closer than ever before to understanding how to prevent and treat it.

The Stony Brook Cancer Center will relocate next year to the new 254,000 square-foot Medical and Research Translation facility (MART), designed to enable scientists and physicians to work side by side to advance cancer research and imaging diagnostics.

Morning Mindset “Morning is an important time of day, because how you spend your morning can often tell you what kind of day you are going to have.” ~ Lemony Snicket We all have our routines.

Me, I find particular solace in the schedules of daily life more so than most. My mornings, especially, tend to dictate the tone of the afternoon and evening. This is both good and bad, of course.

A missed wake-up alarm, a favorite pair of jeans in the laundry, no more milk in the fridge… all can lead to being thrown off track and sent on your way in a state of disarray.

Whereas, when things run like clockwork, the feeling tends to be more of the notion that nothing can stand in the way of productivity. Who knew the snooze button could hold so much power?

In lieu of last week’s column

ruminating on the power of the almighty calendar and its tendency to dictate our schedules to the point that we no longer can differentiate those things we truly enjoy doing from those that are pure obligation, I received several kind letters from readers expressing their complete agreement that their lives, too, have been taken over by those tiny square boxes.

One woman even went so far as to recommend a book, “Quiet Mind,” which suggests that we would all be better served by taking a moment to sit back and relax, to find an hour of peace in which to clear our minds of the clutter that accumulates over the course of day after day spent running from one task to the next. The idea is to eventually, over time, expand upon this hour and have its influence extend throughout the entire day. How nice that would be.

It all begins with one moment, whether it is rising early to see the sun come up over the Great South Bay, or taking the extra time to prepare a homemade breakfast during the rush of the week, or even driving the scenic route to work. Little things add up to big things, and big things become a way of living, day by day. There is ample benefit to be found in making that effort.

It is not a perfect process, to be sure. There will still be those days when the snooze button seems the most viable option, when skipping breakfast and running out the door to sit in traffic is how you are destined to spend your morning. But that doesn’t have to dictate the tone of the entire day. Pop a CD in, turn up the volume, sit back and enjoy the ride.

There are miles to go before you sleep.

In recognition of his dedication to the fight against cancer, Joseph R. Biden Jr., 47th Vice President of the United States of America, was honored at Stony Brook University’s annual charity Gala at Chelsea Piers in Manhattan.

Hosted by the Stony Brook Foundation, the Gala generates funds for student financial aid and a select academic area of excellence. This year, the University raised $6,946,000 in gifts and pledges including $2,051,000 for scholarships and $4,895,000 to support the Stony Brook University Cancer Center. Since 2000, the event has raised more than $50 million.

As Vice President, Joe Biden led the White House “Cancer Moonshot” with the mission to double the rate of progress in preventing the disease that leads to more than 8 million deaths worldwide every year. The intention, said Biden in his remarks, was to infuse the cancer research culture with “the urgency of now.”

Under his leadership, the Cancer Moonshot Task Force catalyzed novel, innovative and impactful partnerships among 20 government agencies, departments and White House offices as well as over 70 private sector collaborations.

Biden also helped lead the effort to pass the 21st Century Cures Act, which provides $1.8 billion over seven years for the Cancer Moonshot scientific priorities.

“The Moonshot is a program,” said Biden that “has become a movement, giving cancer patients and the people impacted by their illness new hope. And what cancer patients want more than ever is hope.

But we can only hope to make sustainable progress if we’re preparing the next generation of cancer scientists and doctors.”

“At Stony Brook, we share Joe Biden’s determination, sense of urgency and his fundamental ​confidence​ in our ability to make a difference in the fight against cancer,” Stony Brook President Samuel L. Stanley Jr. said to the record-breaking 870 guests in attendance.

Seventh-grade students enrolled in Danielle Tauriello’s and Grace Sullivan’s science classes at Ronkonkoma Middle School were recently treated to a special visit from Nature Nick of Nature Nick’s Animal Adventures.

The visit was an extension of the students upcoming lessons in ecology. Throughout the course of Nature Nick’s demonstration, the students were not only given valuable information surrounding wildlife and

their ecosystems, but were also able to interact with such animals as baby goats, hedgehogs and a desert fox.

French Knowledge Students enrolled in Ashley Lefevre’s French classes at Connetquot High School recently visited with Edward J. Bosti Elementary School C-Quest students in an effort to engage in activities and lessons surrounding the French language and culture.

Throughout the duration of their visit, the students interacted

with one another and engaged in activities such as French-themed Bingo and coloring the French flag. Additionally, utilizing the Kahoot webbased program, the high school students prepared an interactive quiz for the younger students displayed entirely in the French language.

level of recognition awarded by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).

LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is a globallyrecognized certification system administered by the

In addition to her state honors, Brittany currently holds the all-time records for weight throw, indoor shotput, outdoor shotput, discus and hammer throw at Connetquot High

School. She was recently named as a finalist for the Butch Dellecave Award, which will be presented by Newsday later in the year.

Academically speaking, she has been on the Principal’s Honor Roll throughout her high school career and will graduate ranked in the top 4 percent of the Class of 2017.

WELLINGTON, Fla. (CBS12) — Grief counselors are at Emerald Cove Middle School on Monday to help students cope with the loss of a fellow student, according to district leaders.

Jonathon Gonzalez, 13, died after crashing a dirt bike over the weekend.

It happened Sunday afternoon near Oakberry Circle and Oak Hamlet Lane in Wellington. The dirt bike crashed into a canal, according to Palm Beach County Fire Rescue spokesman Albert Borroto.

A medical helicopter took the boy to the hospital where he later died.

Palm Beach County Schools says the counselors are being made available to both students and staff.

The Gonzalez family set up a GoFundMe page (https://www.gofundme.com/our-beloved-jonathon-gonzalez) to help with the funeral expenses. Hundreds of students and friends showed up at a candlelight vigil at the Wellington Edge clubhouse.

Splashing into Spring Cold weather and rain didn’t dampen the spirits of the day as splashers gathered to help raise money and awareness for AHRC Suffolk’s programs and services during their annual Polar Bear Splash last Saturday, April 22nd.

This year welcomed back a few of our favorite groups such as James E Allen Junior and Senior

High, the Dominic Trionfo Memorial Fund Foundation and North Babylon’s Students for a Better World and Honor Society! We also welcomed some new groups such as Connetquot’s Breaking Boundaries Club!

This year also welcomed Owen Karlson a 10-yearold boy from Wading River who helped raise over

$2,000 for the Splash. For Owen, it was personal, he has a brother that attends AHRC Suffolk’s Saul and Elaine Seiff Educare Center and wanted to do something that would make a difference for his brother; Owen and Team Elliot helped raise over $10,000 for the event!

Fourth-grade students in Michelle Eskin’s class at Connetquot Central School District’s Edward J. Bosti Elementary School recently worked collaboratively during a Makerspace activity based on the children’s books “The Most Magnificent Thing.”

After school librarian Anna Marie Tongue introduced the book’s main theme of creating with an open mind, the students met together in small groups to create their very own projects while utilizing such objects as Lincoln Logs, plastic gears and magnetic rods.

Celebrating Literacy “The goal of the activity was to get the students thinking in a creative light, as they began to demonstrate authentic problem-solving strategies and assimilate new ideas while incorporating literacy,” said Mrs. Tongue.

“Some of our students have never been on an airplane; others have never been to Disney World. Performing in this once-in-a-lifetime experience was an outstanding experience for them.”

The students showcased their musical talents to Disney guests from across the nation and around the world by playing songs and rhythms that capture the spirit of America. During their stay, the students also

enjoyed exploring Disney theme parks.

Each year, vocal, instrumental and dance ensembles from around the world apply to perform as part of Disney Performing Arts at both Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World Resort.

Once selected, students perform amid an international audience of Disney theme park guests.

Millions of performers have graced the stages of the Disney Parks in the more than 25-year history of the program.

Within the auditorium, audience members were amazed by performance artist Christopher Agostino of Agostino Arts,

A d d i t i o n a l l y, representatives from Barnes and Noble and the Connetquot Public Library were on hand to speak to students and their families about the important benefits of reading a good book.

Bashing the Trash Students at Connetquot Central School District’s Sycamore Avenue Elementary School were recently visited by the talented and environmentallyconscious musicians of “Bash the Trash” in an effort to raise awareness about the importance of recycling.

teacher Rachel White, the program began with the performers parading down the aisles of the school’s auditorium as they simultaneously played drums, horns and string instruments created entirely out of recycling materials.

After displaying the unique qualities of their instruments for the

student’s entertainment, the Bash the Trash musicians also explained how the sounds were produced so that the students could go home to create their very own instruments out of hollow tubes, rubber bands, buckets and empty plastic soda bottles.

On Monday, April 10th, the Longwood High School Marching Band, under the direction of band director Phil Scanze, led the Festival of Fantasy parade at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom. The trip was the high school’s first visit to the Walt Disney World Resort as part of the Disney Performing Arts program.

The performance was the highlight of a four-day trip and the culmination of months of fundraising, practice, and planning by the students and band staff.

Environmental Programs Set The Town of Brookhaven has announced the schedule of May 2017 Environmental Programs at West Meadow Beach in East Setauket and Cedar Beach in Mount Sinai.

All programs are free, but registration is required.

Greening Brookhaven In celebration of Earth Day (April 22nd), the Town held its annual “Free Tree, Mulch and Compost Giveaway” on April 21st at Town Hall as part of Supervisor Ed Romaine’s “Greening Brookhaven” initiative.

The goal of the initiative is to distribute and plant 10,000 tree seedlings by 2020, the same goal date

for the Green Energy and Sustainability initiative for Town facilities. The free mulch and compost will continue to be available at various Town locations while supplies last. Mulch and compost is not bagged, so residents must provide their own containers and load the materials themselves into their vehicles. For more

Brookahven Fair Set The Brookhaven Fair returns to the Pennysaver Amphitheater at Bald Hill, Farmingville, for four weekends of fun, thrills and entertainment for the entire family. In recognition of her creativity, collaboration, leadership, and technical expertise during the 2017 FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition season, Longwood High School junior Melissa Bruce has been named a FIRST Dean’s List Finalist.

Nominated by Longwood High School Robotics Team 564, Melissa has an extraordinary skill of capturing the attention of an audience, an enthusiastic way of expressing her passion for robotics, and the ability to demonstrate her thoughts and ideas.

“My initial interest in joining robotics was to follow my brother’s footsteps and become

Long Island University’s prestigious Palmer School of Library and Information Sciences was recently admitted to the elite community of iSchools, an international consortium of prominent information schools with robust research traditions and well-established Ph.D. programs.

The organization promotes high-level research and higher education in the information disciplines.

Being part of this prestigious consortium is an honor shared with leading information schools around the world, including University of

California, Berkley, Penn State and Carnegie Mellon.

Connetquot Central School District’s Edward J. Bosti Elementary School was recently chosen to host distinguished guests from Iceland as part of a cross-cultural learning experience that highlights the school’s successful Leader in Me program and the Icelandic culture.

Throughout the duration of their visit to the school, the foreign educators were able to engage in activities planned throughout the day that displayed how educational practices pertaining to the Leader in

Me program are utilized.

Students in Kim Patterson’s kindergarten class worked collaboratively on a synergize-themed project which asked them to fill up the empty space in a fishshaped design while the Icelandic visitors observed and took notes on the lesson.

Additionally, Bosti Principal Dr. Gail Cholden sat down alongside staff members and the guests to discuss similarities and differences regarding culture and education.

To conclude the day’s

events, the visitors were treated to special musical performances from Bosti student leaders, expressing their gratitude toward the Icelandic educators attending their school.

The Leader in Me program, developed by Franklin Covey, teaches 21st century leadership and life skills to students and creates a culture of student empowerment based on the idea that every child can be a leader.

The program is now being implemented in more than 2,000 schools worldwide.

Wild for Reading The Middle Country Central School District recently hosted its second annual literacy event to celebrate and encourage literacy throughout the District’s ten elementary schools. The night, titled “We Are Wild About Reading and Writing!” featured three sessions filled with an assortment of workshops focused on engaging students through popular literary works and practicing their reading and writing skills.

“This year’s literacy event was, once again, a great success and a stellar representation of the District’s commitment to showcasing student growth,” said Dr. Roberta Gerold, Superintendent of Schools. “Our teachers continue to work with students on a daily basis to

develop their literary skills, offer assignments focused on increasing students’ vocabulary and aid in enhancing their knowledge of sentence structure. It is an honor to witness the progression of students as they advance through elementary school.”

The District welcomed more than 25 acclaimed professional authors from throughout Long Island to share their literary works with students and parents.

These authors, along with teachers, hosted workshops intended to develop creative writing skills and highlight books that are reading level appropriate. In addition, a young author’s showcase was held in the library providing selected students an opportunity to discuss and read aloud a story they

have written during the 2016-2017 school year.

“As educators, we are here to inspire our students and make their educational experience fulfilling,” said Dr. Kyrie Siegel, Coordinator of English Language Arts K-12. “Events like these provide students a platform to share their accomplishments with the Middle Country community and an interactive outlet to express their creativity.”

Members of the Middle Country Public Library, Long Island Children’s Writers and Illustrators, and ThinkBIG! Theater group were also in attendance to host special activities during the evening’s events.
