and Zachary Sanges as the Doorman-Guard. With over a hundred players as either munchkins (K-2 students) or in the ensemble (see the program attached), audiences were absolutely charmed. After presenting exuberant characterizations and impersonations of the classic film, the Cherry Avenue performers brought the production home with the always touching reunion scene, reaffirming that “There’s no place like home!”

Special kudos to Directors Miss Jackie and Miss Jess from The Production Over the Rainbow Theatre Company and their production staff for doing a magical job coordinating the cast and crew. And special thanks go to “The real Wizard” (to quote the program) Principal Dr. Lisa Ihne, PTA parent producers Mary Dolan and Kelly Darling, along with the PTA parent volunteers and student helpers whose tireless assistance contributed to a most successful PTA Fundraiser event.

The Cherry Avenue PTA was so encouraged by this firsttime theatrical production, they are looking forward to staging another next year.

The Charity of the Month for May is: Bikers Against Child Abuse (BACA) www.BACAworld.org

Although BACA Members have witnessed how well their process works for many years, no one needs to take their word for it any longer because a four year independent study by professionals in the field, recently revealed that BACA children achieve “statistically significant improvements” in all behavioral and emotional categories. This greatly contributes to expediting the overall healing of the child on many levels, so their fear is quickly replaced with confidence. This conclusive study was published in the International Journal of “Evaluation and Program Planning” and can be found in its entirety on the BACA website.

To date, their success with abused children has enabled BACA to spread to 17 countries, 47 states and thousands of members.

If you are interested in becoming a BACA member you must meet certain requirements. Some of them are that you have regular access to a motorcycle, are 18 years or older, can pass an NCIC fingerprint check, can attend monthly meetings and Chapter events and have a desire to help abused children. If you meet the basic criteria, you can eventually become a Cleared Supporter, which is when you are assigned a Patched Member as your “Sponsor”. This member guides you through extensive training, which goes on for a minimum of at least one year before you can be considered eligible to become a full Patched Member.

Bikers Against Child Abuse is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization. BACA formed with the intent to create a safer environment for abused children. They exist as a body of bikers to empower children not to feel afraid of the world in which they live. They stand ready to lend support to their wounded friends by involving them with an established, united organization.

BACA works in conjunction with local and state officials who are already in place to protect children. BACA receives calls on their helpline (631-408-8218), which is taken by the Chapter Child Liaison. This member contacts the family and an initial visit is organized to meet the guardian and child at their home or another location. Following this visit, two BACA members are assigned as “Primaries” to the child who remain available for contact 24/7/365. A ride is then organized for the members of the Chapter to meet the child.

This is when a ceremony is performed to take the child into the BACA family, which is where the empowerment begins.

BACA supports each child according to their individual needs. Some services available for the child and their family include a physical presence at the home (24/7 if needed), visiting the child at school, escorting the child to and from court, and they even maintain a therapy fund for children needing assistance.

The members of BACA are all volunteers that do not receive payment of any kind, and they also pay for all their own expenses. They will tell you their payment is far more significant than money. Their payment is seeing first hand how their involvement empowers children and contributes to their

Let's Make Dirty Rice Dirty Rice is a fun and variant rice dish, with plenty of room for improvisation.

Even better, you can make a vegan version or incorporate sausage into the dish.

What You Will Need

1 cup White Rice 1 generous dash of turmeric 1 dash of black pepper 1 dash of sea salt Finely chopped half red pepper Finely chopped half green pepper Finely chopped portabello mushrooms 1/4 cup lentils 1/4 cup black eyed peas 1/2 cup green peas Finely chopped sausage (whatever kind you prefer) to taste (optional)

Preparation Soak lentils and black eyed peas together in a medium stovetop pot of tepid water for 30 minutes to soften them. Then rinse them and place them in fresh water, letting them simmer on medium heat for approx. 45 minutes or until they are soft, but still intact.

Set aside and cover to retain heat.

Boil and then simmer rice, according

to box instructions. Rice typically boils vigorously for 1 minute and then simmers on low heat with a closed lid for approx. 25 minutes.

Chop up all veggies and steam on the stove top until they are all tender, yet firm. Add and mix turmeric, black pepper and salt into rice as it is cooking. Rice should turn yellow.

Microwave frozen, steam-able green peas for speed.

Add all vegetables, along with lentils and black eyed peas, into the rice and stir. If desired, cut up your sausage into round disked slices and then cut those slices into fourths. If pre-cooked, add into rice mixture. If not, cook first and then add.

Let entire rice mixture continue to heat on low heat with lid, on the stove top for 20 more minutes, and enjoy!

Even When You Think You Can’t “It is your decisions, and not your conditions, that determine your destiny.” - Tony Robbins This morning I was speaking to someone very important in my life and I expressed that I felt as though something was holding me down, making me feel heavy and sad. Yes, I was feeling a bit depressed today. I’ve never been completely comfortable baring my soul to people in my life, instead feeling more at home in the position of helper as opposed to helpee.

When, I myself, am struggling, I will rarely venture to confide in someone, and when I do, I expect a lot of the typical platitudes and that’s okay. I know that just because someone loves you, it doesn’t mean they are always going to have just the right words at just the right time. That’s been my job (literally). But I have to say, this one shocked and amazed me. I’ll never doubt the value of a good heart to heart pep talk again.

I think I said, “I can’t do my column today, I just can’t. I’m feeling too down in the dumps

(yes, it happens). I thought I was going to be fully supported in throwing in the towel for the week. If I’m being honest, that is what I thought I wanted. Instead, he said to me, “Do you know why I wake up at 4 AM each morning to go to the gym before I start my day?” I was tempted to say, “Um, because you’re crazy?”

I get up at 6 AM, and as you all know, 6 AM to 7 AM is my sacred morning hour, but 4 AM would never happen. A girl needs her sleep! My friend continued, “I get up at 4 AM each day to go to the gym and purposely lift weight that drags me down and offers me resistance so that I can overcome that resistance, lift myself back up and build more muscle.”

I knew he was a workout devotee, but I must admit, I never thought of it as a metaphor for life. And to think I’ve watched every Rocky movie ever made.

I’ve had plenty of moments in my life where things were so smooth and I was so ridiculously blessed that being happy, enthusiastic and inspired was a no-brainer. What I have humbly

come to realize is that when you preach from a privileged soapbox, you can only reach so far. Yes, the last several months have been filled with some interesting ups and downs and some things that haven’t felt so pleasant. They have also been filled with massive growth and perspective, and yes, I have been developing a lot of new muscles.

I was not let off the hook this morning. The beautiful thing is that not having to write was what I wanted, but not what I needed in order to grow. I needed to be stretched past my comfort zone today, lovingly yet firmly.

We all fall into that trap at times, where we are looking for excuses to be less than great.

At that moment this morning, someone loved me enough to remind me that although my reason to not want to write this particular column was valid, it would not take me where I needed, and ultimately wanted, to go. Pushing past some temporary discomfort to get the job done would.

Outstanding Service Award

Sachem High School North senior Lauren Breuer was recently awarded the Suffolk County Principals Leadership award and was named a

recipient of the President’s Volunteer Service Award for her continued efforts focused on improving her school community through community service initiatives.

Lauren boasts an impressive academic résumé. She is enrolled in several Advanced Placement classes such as English, Government and Politics, and Spanish. In addition to her academic accomplishments, Lauren has been class president for each of her four years

at High School North and an active member of the Buddies Club, Leadership Club and Mentors Club.

She is also a member of the Business, Foreign Language and National honor societies.

“I just love to help people,” Lauren said. “If I can help just one person, no matter how big or small, that makes all the hard work worth it.”

Long Distance Learning A cross-country connection between an Alaskan elementary school and second grade students in Mary Bernhard’s class at Chippewa Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District led to an eye-opening look inside a school community much different from their own.

As part of the yearlong project, students in Bernhard’s class have been communicating with students in Alaska in an interesting way. They have been taking photos with Flat Stanleys around their school community and sharing places they go around Long Island. Then, the Alaskan students did the same.

Through this interactive project, Chippewa students learned about numerous aspects of Alaska, including climate, population, landscape and animals.

Later this year, Bernhard plans to set up a video chat between each class for the students to meet face to face.

SAVVY SAVERS - Students at Connetquot Central School District’s Helen B. Duffield Elementary School are gaining important financial literacy advice with assistance from school math specialist Cathy Ebbecke. During an activity hosted by Mrs. Ebbecke, the students were asked to compare and contrast items in hopes of determining if they were worthy of short-term saving goals, or long-term saving goals.

As part of the hands-on workshop, students learned

how Native American ceramic vessels are made and about their connection to world cultures. Using some of his brilliant work

local people as employees.

Those employees pay their share of taxes as well as spend their money at other nearby places.

This becomes a selfsustaining system, where money flows throughout the community. Also, it clearly provides jobs so that each working person then provides for their own family’s needs.

Taxes, as much as we gripe about paying them, are a very necessary part of healthy towns. Services including school districts, police, roads and more, are paid for by the collected monies. Less police, poor schools or lack of road repairs can quickly lead to

an area’s demise.

Something we can all actively take part in is the success of these local businesses directly correlating to the overall success of our area. They need our support. Always shop locally when you can and that goes especially to supporting the smaller businesses. Look around and see what takes up those small units in the retail strips. Give that deli, hair salon or auto mechanic a try. Even if it is just to have a backup when your favorite place is too busy.

Learn a little something about the people behind the business. How? One way is to continue to

read this column as it shines a light on the small business owners that live in and contribute to your community. Another way is to just stop in, or ask friends if they have been there.

An added bonus is that those successful businesses are the ones supporting your schools, sports functions and fundraisers with sponsorships and donations to events.

A community with a healthy local economy usually provides a safer environment for people to live and play; schools benefit, parks are maintained and transportation systems

run.

So please, read the Small Business Spotlight column, always try to shop locally first and go small before you go large. This becomes about investing in the stores success just as much as it is in your own.

While the Cole Porter hits are the dominant focus of the musical, they are embedded in a satirical comedy situated on board the S.S. America ocean liner bound for England and peopled by stereotypes from eras gone-by. Yet, the rendition of this 1962 revival was capably embodied by the sensitive and thoughtful Sayville

Brook Street Players who fused hilarity with humanity.

Spectacular tap-dancing and dazzling costumes gave glamour and glitter to the production.

No less impressive was the set, the “Afterdeck” on a massive white ocean liner detailed with aluminumrimmed portholes, rivets, and railing, sky-blue doors that worked and seemingly went places, and wellappointed guest cabins and staterooms. All the while, the stage crew and the pit musicians expertly made
