Out Hunger” Food Drive taking place on Long Island, and nationally, on Saturday May 9th.

Here’s how it works.

Long Islanders are being asked to set out non-perishable food by their mailboxes on May 9th, which will then be picked up by their letter carriers while delivering the day’s mail. The letter carriers will then deliver their collected food to an Island Harvest “Stamp Out Hunger” warehouse – where an army of volunteers will sort food, to be distributed immediately to Island Harvest’s network of 570 member agencies, including food pantries and soup kitchens throughout Long Island.

“While the letter carriers do all of the day’s heavy lifting, Stamp Out Hunger makes donating easy. All people have to do is leave their donation by their mailbox,” asserts

Randi Shubin Dresner, President & CEO, Island Harvest. “Our goal is for every family to donate something, and let their letter carriers do the rest.

It’s that simple.”

“The harsh winter weather this year presented Long Islanders experiencing hunger with many challenges, including pay loss due to the weather, making it an even more difficult time to put food on the table,” explained Dresner. “This, coupled with the usual springtime need for food following the depletion of our holiday donations, makes this year’s Stamp Out Hunger food drive essential.”

Since the inception of Stamp Out Hunger in 1992, over 1.3 billion pounds of food have been collected by letter carriers in the United States.

Locally, last year Long Islanders donated more than 326,000 pounds of

food and this year, Island Harvest expects a similar amount to be collected by letter carriers on 2,219 carrier routes across Long Island.

“The most trusted federal employees, U.S. Postal Service letter carriers are routinely involved in many community outreach initiatives, and often, form very close relationships with their customers,” said Walter Barton, President, NALC. “It is this connection they have within their communities that compels them to want to help make a difference.” Stamp Out Hunger is the nation’s largest food drive that has been taking place now for 23 years.

Embrace The Change By: Jamie Lynn Ryan It’s amazing the degree to which our media consumption has changed as a society through the years. In the last decade alone, from the time I graduated from C.W. Post’s Journalism program, social media has quite literally taken over – for better or worse.

What was once perfectly satisfactory to read in the next morning’s paper now must be transmitted instantly across a host of media, in some cases, at the expense of accuracy.

While this isn’t exactly a unique realization, it was brought to new light at the recent Society of Professional Journalists Region I Conference that I attended last week at Hofstra University. Again and again,

the same theme was revisited – how can we, as journalists, learn to be so-called “experts” on everything, able to take on any task asked of us on the fly, all in an effort to transmit to the masses before the millions of others out there doing the same thing? It’s a tall order, one that, just 10 years ago, wasn’t quite so relevant.

Couple that with the fact that literally anyone with a smartphone can capture an image or video, add some copy and a sound bite and, theoretically, paint him/ herself as a journalist. All it takes is the vast landscape of the Internet to take a tidbit to the masses via Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, whatever; and, before you know it, you have a viral sensation that, just minutes prior, was

nothing more than gossip.

Amazing, isn’t it?

Take that to the next level, and it is nearly impossible to steer clear of spoiler alerts for your favorite TV shows, movies, books, anything… if you’re not planning on watching it live, you had best engage in a self-imposed media blackout until your DVR is warmed up. This, from the person who decided to wait an hour or so before catching up on last night’s episode of Grey’s Anatomy.

Enough said.

Ten years ago, that wouldn’t have been a problem.

Like it or not, this is the world we now live in. The sooner we embrace it, learn to live with it and adapt our lives to the changing media landscape, the better.

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone was joined by members of the Suffolk County Legislature, local military veterans and veteran’s advocates, the Greater Long Island Running Club, race directors and registered Suffolk County Marathon & Half Marathon runners to announce the 2015 Suffolk County Veterans Running Series.

The series will take place in various locations throughout the County, including in East Northport, Lake Ronkonkoma, Oakdale, Northport and Lindenhurst.

“With the launch of the 2015 Suffolk County Veterans Running Series, we now have the opportunity to make an even bigger impact for our local veterans,” said Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone. “I want to thank all those who helped make this series possible as it is our obligation to help provide our heroes with the services and assistance they need when they return home. We now have the opportunity to make an even bigger impact for our local veterans.”

The series will serve as an opportunity for local veterans and residents to participate in local races, including the Suffolk County Marathon & Half Marathon on September 13th, while helping to raise additional funds for local veteran service groups.

is delighted that County Executive Steve Bellone has taken it upon himself to initiate the Suffolk County Marathon in support of all veterans and included the Navy SEAL Lt. Michael P. Murphy 4-mile run around Lake Ronkonkoma in his veterans running series,” said Dan Murphy, father of the SEAL who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor. “I have always found County Executive Bellone to be strongly supportive of our veterans community and committed to our Suffolk County veterans and their needs. Stand For The Silent

As part of Longwood Middle School’s year-long anti-bullying program, fifth and sixth grade students welcomed featured speaker Kirk Smalley from Stand for the Silent.

Mr. Smalley’s presentation is direct and forceful, personal and heart-wrenching. At only eleven years-old, his son Ty took his own life after being suspended from school. Ty had retaliated against a bully that had been harassing him for

more than two years.

Today, Mr. Smalley travels the country to honor a promise he made on the first Father’s Day after his son’s death; to stop bullying in the world.

Since May 2010, Kirk Smalley has visited more than 1,000 schools and presented to more than 1,000,000 kids.

Mr. Smalley urged the students to reach out for help, and to sign a pledge to not be a bully or to support bullying. When asked how

many students had been bullied, many raised their hands. “I love you,” he said. “A kid is bullied every seven seconds.

Think about that the next time you see it happen. You can change somebody’s life, be somebody’s hero. You have to be the one.”

“It’s really important for kids my age to see this presentation,” said fifth grade student Hunter Fink.

“I feel like by bringing this issue up now, we can end bullying in the future.”

VET DOG DONATION - A group of 20 friends dedicated to helping “America’s Vet Dogs” held a Chinese Auction fundraiser and raised $12,000 for that organization, which trains and provides service dogs to veterans in need. Calling themselves “Friends of America’s Vet Dogs” the group members come from all over Islip and Brookhaven Towns. The fundraiser, held last week in Sayville, was attended by over 300 people.

YOUTH HONORED - On April 16th, Councilwoman Connie Kepert and the Brookhaven Town Board honored Laura Cox, Gordon Heights Civic Garden Club President, Vice Chair Tracy Gibbs, Girl Scout Troop 544, Girl Scout Troop 1371 and several youth volunteers for their commitment and contribution to the community of Gordon Heights. The children spent many hours enhancing the triangle at Teller Avenue by planting a tree and decorating eggs and ribbons that were placed on the tree for the Easter holiday season.

Safe Stop On Thursday, April 16th, state and local officials, bus transportation representatives and the Suffolk County Police and Sheriff Departments joined Longwood School District officials to launch a statewide initiative to stop drivers from passing stopped school buses.

“The illegal passing of stopped school buses occurs more than 50,000 times per day in New York State, presenting a significant risk to the 2.3

million children who ride buses to school each day,” said Longwood School District Transportation Coordinator Gale Winsper.

“In the last four years alone, 35 students were hit by motorists passing buses in New York State.”

Operation Safe Stop is a statewide campaign to educate motorists about the dangers of passing a stopped school bus with lights flashing.

The program seeks to promote school bus safety through

education and enforcement efforts.

The statewide initiative is a cooperative project supported by the New York State Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee, the New York State Education Department, the New York Association for Pupil Transportation, the New York State School Bus Contractors Association, the student transportation industry and state, county, city and local law enforcement agencies.

Ashlee Kuzemchak is described by her teachers at DMS as a pleasure to have in class, a model student and citizen. With a GPA of 97.4, Ashlee is a member of the National Junior Honor Society.

Outside of school, Ashlee practices with the school’s tennis team and pursues opportunities within the community. This includes serving as a member of the Teen Advisory Council at the Middle Country Public Library where she assists in the planning and execution of library events. Samantha Varone is active in SMS sports, academics and in the Selden community as a Girl Scout. As a Girl Scout, Samantha has had the opportunity to volunteer at a nearby soup kitchen and continues to volunteer after her Girl Scout obligation ended. In pursuit of her Girl Scout Silver Award, Samantha is working to fundraise and donate books to a local pre-school. She hopes to pursue a career as either a math teacher or radiologist.

Thespian Honor Society, Dioni is ranked 13th in the graduating class of 2015.

Outside of the classroom, Dioni played a significant role in organizing the Black History Month celebrations in addition to the Life Skills Social each year. She also volunteered as a peer tutor and participated in every drama production the school has organized. Dioni will attend the University of Maryland and plans to study Criminal Justice in pursuit of becoming an FBI agent.

Newfield High School senior Erica Mones has excelled in honors, AP and college level courses throughout her high school career. This year, Erica will complete four advanced placement classes and one college level class including three foreign language classes, one of which is AP French. In addition to membership in the National Honor Society and Language Other Than English (LOTE) Honor Society, Erica is also a member of the book club and environmental club at NHS. Outside of school, Erica competes with the Long Island Storms as a runner and participates in the Empire State Games for the physically challenged.

She is also a member of the advisory committee for the Special Needs Task Force in the Town of Brookhaven. Though she has not yet chosen which college or university she will attend in the fall, Erica plans to pursue a major in Anthropology.

Retiree Honored The Suffolk County Legislature honored longtime county employee Carolyn E. Fahey on her retirement after more than 35 years of service to Suffolk County. She began her career as a Secretary in the County Executive’s Office on January 21st, 1980. She became a County Executive Assistant I, on May 21st, 1984.

On December 1st, 1986 she became an Intergovernmental Relations Analyst, serving a total of seven years in the County

Executive’s office. She transferred to the Health Department on February 9th, 1987 remaining an Intergovernmental Relations Analyst I. On October 1st, 1990 she became a Grants Analyst at the Health Department.

Then, on October 25, 1993, she transferred to the Department of Economic Development with the title of Assistant Intergovernmental Relations Coordinator.

She received the title of Intergovernmental Relations Coordinator on

March 21st, 2003 and has served in that position ever since.

Caring For Older Adults (NAPSI)—With a growing aging population, the amount of family caregivers in the United States is also on the rise. There are nearly 45 million people who serve as a caregiver for a family member or friend who is 50 or older. Serving as a caregiver can be rewarding

but difficult.

Often, caregivers are unaware of local aging resources that might be able to assist them.

The Eldercare Locator is a free, public service that connects older adults and caregivers to information about local resources and services such as

meal delivery programs, transportation options, home modification assistance and inhome support services.

Additionally, caregivers can find out about support groups in their community and programs that offer a break from caregiving responsibilities.

The Eldercare Locator also has free informational brochures for older adults and caregivers on topics such as medication management, preventing falls in the home, transportation options, avoiding financial exploitation, and brain health. All brochures can

The Eldercare Locator is a public service of the U.S. Administration on Aging and is administered by the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging.

They are now living happily at the Game Farm and are looking forward to seeing guests and eating out of their hands. In the spring, they will have their coats shorn to make them more comfortable in the summer months.

Melinda Novak, CoOwner, Long Island Game Farm will be using the alpaca fleece to make nuno-felted scarves, which will be for sale at the Game Farm and other local venues. Profits will be donated to The Butterfly Effect Project of Riverhead and Bellport, an organization close to Ms. Novak and Game Farm staff member Scarlett Green, who volunteer their time with the organization.

The Butterfly Effect

Project is a non-profit organization that empowers underprivileged girls ages nine to 13 by giving them the tools to assist them in achieving academic and emotional stability and a self-confident future, which will bring forth a generation of women who are strong, independent and knowledgeable. The group’s mission is to ensure that every girl who is enrolled in the program has a fair chance to broaden their horizons while eliminating the normal obstacles, such as social mobility, cultural differences and finances.

New Residents

Just in time for the grand opening of its 46th season on April 8th, the Long Island Game Farm showed visitors its newly acquired alpacas as part of its expanding animal exhibit. The Game Farm received the animals from the Ceruti family of

Shoreham, who have been longtime friends of the Game Farm. The Cerutis donated their backyard pet alpaca herd, consisting of Rosie and her yearling Robbie; Sophie and her yearling Rusty; Gracie and her yearling Zoe; and one female named Melanie.

Alpacas are a domesticated species of the South American camelid, resembling a small Llama in appearance, but considerably smaller. They have a silky fleece that covers their bodies and are shorn each year, producing between five and eight

pounds of fleece annually.

Some of their colors are black, white, brown and gray. Their wool is waterrepellent and is used for making coats, sweaters and blankets.

They are able to live in semi-arid habitats and are native to South American countries, including Peru, northern Bolivia, Ecuador and Chile. They also have cloven hooves that help them negotiate steep mountainous terrain.

Alpacas are herbivores, their diets consisting mainly of hay, grass and ferns. They are also known as ruminants (or cudchewing animals). They have a height of 40 inches and weigh from 100 to 175 pounds. An alpaca can live up to 20 years.
