Outdoor living spaces are coveted niches in a home. The American Home Furnishings Alliance says more than 70 percent of American households have outdoor living spaces, and nearly 70 percent of people use these spaces at least once per week in-season. Furthermore, homeowners are increasingly interested in enhancing these spaces to make them more usable and comfortable.

The final part of the trip included walking past the entrance to the New York Met’s Clubhouse and taking a peek inside, along with the workout facility, the offices for the coaching staff, the lunchroom, the batting cages and the indoor sprinting track.

Hope for Youth www.hfyny.org Hope for Youth is an Amityville-based, notfor-profit organization that works to facilitate positive change in the lives of Long Island children, youth and families.

Nationwide, 45 percent of foster children reside in a foster family home with a nonrelative, while 34 percent are with a foster family home with a relative. For 54 percent of foster children, the goal is to reunite the child with a parent or primary caretaker.

The goal is adoption for 28 percent.

On Long Island, Hope For Youth is a central player in the identification and training of foster families. All Hope For Youth foster families receive multiple certifications in parenting skills.

Foster parents take part in mandated educational workshops throughout the course of the year.

The team members at Hope For Youth are keenly aware of the unique role that kinship caregivers play in working to achieve reunification for children and youth in foster care. This focus helps to keep moving the system toward one that truly supports families.

The organization also participates in “Wendy’s Wonderful Kids,” part of the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption.

Under this program, Hope For Youth has two adoption recruiters who bring children waiting to be adopted from foster care closer to safe, loving and permanent homes. The Foundation’s adoption recruitment model has proven effective nationwide in serving children who’ve been in foster care the longest.

Hope For Youth is always looking for new foster parents. They also welcome volunteer and charitable donations to help advance its foster care work, and to advance all of its programming in support of children Island-wide who deserve more stable and fulfilling lives.

As next month is quickly approaching, it is appropriate to mention that May is National Foster Care Month, an initiative conducted through the US Department of Health and Human Services. The month is devoted to “ensuring a bright future for more than 407,000 children and youth in foster care.” The average age is 8 years old for those children, and there is just about an event split between how many of them are boys and how many are girls.

The month acknowledges foster parents, family members, volunteers, policymakers and others who help children and youth in foster care find permanent homes and connections.

In 2021, the U.S. Surgeon General issued an advisory to highlight the urgent need to address the mental health crisis among youth. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, up to 1 in 5 children ages 3 to 17 years old experienced mental health challenges.

In an effort to address this public health concern and spark conversations about mental health among high schoolers, the National Institutes of Health invites students ages 16 to 18 years old to participate in the “2022 Speaking Up About Mental Health!” essay contest.

Essays should explore ways that individuals or society can address or eliminate mental health stigma that young people may face when seeking mental health treatment.

PSEG Long Island Encourages Eligible Customers To Take Advantage Of Financial Assistance Increased global demand and lagging production are driving up energy prices worldwide and abnormally cold winter temperatures across the United States have increased regional demand for natural gas, a volatile commodity used to generate electricity. PSEG Long Island understands the heightened financial pressures this may place on households, and encourages customers to take advantage of programs that exist to help people struggling with utility bills. There are also many ways customers can lower their bills by using less electricity.

“Like people all over New York State, we know our customers have felt an impact from the unusually high commodity prices of natural gas this winter and that, for some, it compounds financial pressures they are already under due to the pandemic,” said Rick Walden, PSEG Long Island’s vice president of Customer Services. “We have been working hard for many months to reach our customers in arrears and let them know we are here to help. We want our customers to know that financial help is available, and to give them tools to help maintain their household budget while these market conditions persist.”

Like many electricity providers around the nation, electricity for PSEG Long Island’s customers is purchased from a variety of different generation sources, including natural gasburning power plants. The increase in natural gas prices has driven up the costs to generate electricity.

In accordance with a policy established by the LIPA Board of Trustees, a hedging program is in place to reduce the volatility of power supply costs for customers. Hedging provides price stability in case of unforeseen commodity market and weather events that drive up prices.

PSEG Long Island also continues to partner with social service agencies and perform outreach to assist customers who have fallen behind on their bills. For the past five months, field representatives have been making customer visits, connecting one-on-one with residential customers who have past-due account balances to discuss payment methods, accept a payment or work out a payment plan to pay down balances over time. PSEG Long Island representatives work with customers to find the best solution for the household.
