Members Exhibition The Art League of Long Island is pleased to host the Long Island Center of Photography’s Members Exhibition in the Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery May 5th through May 20th. The reception takes place on Sunday May 20th from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm and is open to the artists, their guests, and the general public.

Artists were asked what they would exhibit if given 60 inches of wall space in the Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery in Dix Hills. Twentythree members responded with their highly creative skills and put together a photographic exhibit that

will inspire and provoke thought in all patrons that view their work.

The LICP, founded in 1996, enjoys a reputation as a singular photographic organization dedicated to fine art image-making.

Summer is fast approaching and the Hamptons are the place to be this event season. An event that will once again stand out this summer is the American Heart Association’s 22nd annual Hamptons Heart Ball.

This incredibly anticipated event will be taking place at the Southampton Arts Center in Southampton, on Saturday, June 23rd.

In the past, the groundwater beneath Long Island provided some of the finest drinking water in the world. Now, each year brings more news about the condition of Long Island’s groundwater, and not much of it is good.

The 2018 Protect Our Aquifer Day programs in Suffolk on Thursday, May 3rd and in Nassau on Friday, May 4th from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. are the opportunity to hear experts discuss the science of Long Island groundwater, and legal approaches to provide more protection

and oversight of the water supply on which Long Island relies.

The Suffolk, May 3rd, program will be held at Longwood Public Library, 800 Middle County Road, Middle Island. The Nassau, May 4th, program will be held at Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Shelter Rock, 48 Shelter Rock Road, Manhasset.

Sheriff Visits

Suffolk County Sheriff, Errol D. Toulon, Jr. visited Newfield High School in Selden yesterday as an ongoing part of the Sheriff’s Listening Tour.

During the visit, Sheriff Toulon met with a group of 12 students ranging from 9th-12th grade in an open “round table” discussion about some of the difficulties they are facing within their school and community.

They discussed subjects such as bullying, vaping, drug and opioid use, and gangs, and were able to share with the Sheriff their thoughts and opinions on these topics, as well as their ideas for solutions to the problems. Senior, Ryan Murphy, said “It was one of the best things I

have ever participated in.

It was truly an amazing experience getting to speak to the Sheriff about issues in the school.” Sheriff Toulon shared with the students a little about his background in corrections and law enforcement, as well as his vision to work with the students to come up with programs to address the issues arising in their school.

Sheriff Toulon was pleased with how receptive the students were: “I was so impressed with these students and how open they were to share. I want to break down the barrier between law enforcement and the students. I want them to know who their Sheriff is and feel confident to come to me with any

issues they have.” The Sheriff plans to go back to Newfield High School in the fall to visit with the students he met with today, as well as the faculty and the PTA, to discuss partnering on solutions to the issues raised by the students.

Principal, Scott Graviano said, “To have our newly elected Sheriff take the time to speak with and hear the issues of our high school students is extraordinary. I’ve never seen it before. My students felt empowered and appreciated. I look forward to working closely with the Sheriff’s Office in the future to ensure the overall success of our students.”

The CNA students are part of the Eastern Long Island Academy of Applied Technology, the Career and Technical Education Program at Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES).

Collaboration across the numerous ESBOCES programs provides students with in-depth, real-life perspectives and opportunities to utilize valuable hands-on applications.

Working together, students used four mannequins to learn how to care for a burn patient, remove a urinary drainage bag, conduct proper patient

assessment, and change the dressing on a patient after a tracheotomy. This included taking a culture, venting the area with a suction tube, and donning isolation protection gear to prevent microorganism contamination.

Said Gina Marie Martin, Nurse Assisting teacher, “The goal here is to see if my students want to continue their education by applying for the LPN program. Our sim lab is the closest they will get to doing the level of work LPNs do. Therefore, there is no better place for them to make that determination than here.”

On April 16th, Supervisor Ed Romaine and Councilman Michael Loguercio visited the Dress for Success Boutique in Town Hall to thank representatives of 7-Eleven corporate for their support of Dress for Success Brookhaven.

7-Eleven is a long-time sponsor of Dress for Success and has donated food and refreshments at many their events.

Founded in New York City in 1997, Dress for Success is an international not-for-profit organization offering services designed to help clients find jobs and remain employed. Each Dress for Success client receives one suit when she

has a job interview and can return for a second suit or separates when she finds work. In 1999, Brookhaven was the first affiliate to be established as part of the worldwide nonprofit organization. The women served by Dress for Success Brookhaven come from across Long Island.

They are job ready women who have been referred by over 250 local non-profit organizations; including domestic violence agencies, veteran’s organizations, homeless shelters and job training programs. Dress for Success Brookhaven is sponsored by the Town of Brookhaven Department of Housing and Human Services, Division of

Women’s Services.

The Dress for Success Boutique is located at Brookhaven Town Hall, One Independence Hill in Farmingville. It is open Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and on selected Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. All client visits are by appointment only.

LIBRARY SPEAKER - Brookhaven Town Clerk Donna Lent spoke at the April 14th meeting of the Middle Country Library’s Mujeres Latinas program. The program connects Spanish speaking women with available library services and with each other.

Town Clerk Lent detailed the services offered by the Town Clerk’s office, including the issuing of vital records and marriage licenses. The Mujeres Latinas program meets twice a month at the Centereach location of the Middle Country Library.

Supervisor Ed Romaine and the Brookhaven Division of Economic Development have announced the Job Readiness Program, a series of three classes designed to help job seekers get a competitive edge in the job market.

The three-hour classes will be held in the firstfloor conference room at Brookhaven Town Hall beginning on May 23rd, May 30th and June 6th at 5:30 p.m. The classes will be taught by John Coverdale, president of

The Center for Workplace Solutions, Inc., of Bayport.

Mr. Coverdale is a senior level, high-impact business management executive proficient in human resource management, labor and employee relations, higher education, and organizational consulting.

“People who are looking for a job or considering a career change need to use every advantage to move ahead in the work force,” said Supervisor Romaine.

“I commend our Division of Economic Development

for offering residents the opportunity to hone their skills and build confidence so they can get back on the road to success.”

Elaine Faith Thompson, a Long Island native from Bohemia, is back at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club. The United States Golf Association has chosen her as one of several artists who will paint a limitededition, fine-art print commemorating the 2018 U.S. Open Championship.

The 118th U.S. Open will be contested June 14th17th, at Shinnecock Hills in Southampton.

Thompson felt honored to receive the phone call on December 6th and to have been commissioned to paint the golf course for the 118th U.S. Open Championship.

She spent the following two days photographing the magnificent golf course and clubhouse.

Given her roots, Thompson has worked on many paintings for USGA championships in Long Island and the New York Metropolitan area.

Her first golf painting was of Bethpage State Park’s Black Course for the 2002 U.S. Open. She also worked with the USGA on posters for the 2004 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills, the 2006 U.S. Open at Winged Foot Golf Club, the 2009 U.S. Open at Bethpage Black and the 2013 U.S. Women’s Open at Sebonack Golf Club. Limited edition prints will be available soon.

Thompson is also well known for her New York and Long Island scenic works, including: lighthouses; The Big Duck; Theodore Roosevelt’s home at Sagamore Hill; Fire Island; Riverhead Raceway and the Peconic River; Aqueduct and Roosevelt Raceways; Smithtown Bull; Downtown Sayville and Schoolhouse; Mount Sinai Garden; Lady Golfer at Timber Point Timber; and the Statue of Liberty.

Her portraits include

“Pope Francis in America,” Derek Jeter, John Heisman, and George Washington at Valley Forge. Her other portraits are of pets, houses, cars, boats, motorcycles and planes, all painted in selected scenes.

At the reception Thompson will also be displaying other art including very affordable prints which make great personalized gifts for Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. The most famous commission that Thompson received was from President Ronald Reagan for the official poster design of the National Vietnam Veterans Memorial Statue in Washington, D.C. Just last weekend, I was able to satisfy my urge for a little springtime strolling in the city when the opportunity arose to accompany a friend from college to several New York Bridal Fashion Week runway shows. While I was initially far more interested in the aimless wandering aspect of the day, I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised by the experience of attending these avant-garde displays.

Never having heard of the featured designers prior to seeing their latest collections in person, they proved to be quite impressive. Sure, I could have done without the crowns of flowers as accent, and I’m fairly certain I will not be accessorizing any future bridal gowns with high-top sneakers; but, quirks aside, some of the styles were quite stunning when viewed more as works of art rather than practical fashion.

At the close of one of the shows, the audience was caught

off guard by an impromptu wedding proposal, orchestrated by the boyfriend of one of the featured models. As she stood aghast, he expressed his love and desire to spend the rest of his life with the woman before him, saying he could think of no more appropriate venue to pop the question than on a runway in the midst of bridal week.

Judging by the standing ovation delivered by the crowd - among them, the family of the blushing bride-to-be - it seemed he couldn’t have picked a more opportune moment, one they will surely treasure forever.

Bridal business aside, we managed to squeeze in some sightseeing on what happened to be one of the warmest days we have been graced with so far this season. From the Flatiron District over to the West Village, we traversed a solid six miles or so of the downtown area, taking in the nuances of each neighborhood and - of

course - finding time to snap some photos along the way.

It was during an ill-fated “selfie” attempt in front of the Flatiron Building that a kind woman took pity on us and offered to take the photo, saying, “I know it’s probably taboo to walk up to random strangers and volunteer to take their picture, but you two seemed like you could use a little help.” Why yes, we could indeed. Score one for acts of kindness from fellow tourists.

In all, it was a day short on the sort of haphazard adventure which has become the norm with most New York City day trips I have ventured on; actually, quite seamless. It’s funny, the tendency to almost miss the chaos when things go according to plan.

I’ll have to remind myself of that irony the next time I’m traipsing 50 blocks out of the way to make a reservation at the third restaurant on the list, while carrying my shoes.

Friends of Karen

Friends of Karen is a nonprofit organization that supports critically-ill children and their families.

This year, they are celebrating their 40th anniversary; four decades of bringing help, hope and support to over 15,000 children and their families in the tri-state area.

In 1978, Friends of Karen began with one family, one child, Karen MacInnes; and one inspired woman, Sheila Petersen, who wanted to sustain her close friends through the devastating illness of their daughter. Today, Friends of Karen serves hundreds of families by providing emotional, financial and advocacy support to children with life-threatening illnesses, and to their families in order to help keep them stable, functioning and able to cope, at no cost. To apply for help, a parent or guardian of the ill child must call the organization and speak to a member of their Family Support Team.

Friends of Karen often hosts or participates in many events within their community. On Saturday, May 5th and Sunday, May 6th, they are hosting a team in the Long Island Marathon at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow.

Saturday will be a 5K and Sunday will be a 10K. They are looking for people to join their Friends of Karen team and to cross the finish line knowing they’re making a

difference in the lives of many. If you are interested in participating in either or both of these races with colleagues, as a family or individually, you can sign up today!

Boys & Girls Club Week Last week Deputy Presiding Officer joined children at the Boys & Girls Club to celebrate “National Boys & Girls Club Week.”

He presented the Club with a proclamation and joined the children in a community service project, where they made cards for active-duty military members from the local

community.

“It is always a pleasure to visit the Boys & Girls Club,” stated Deputy Presiding Officer Rob Calarco. “The staff mentors the children to become responsible citizens and community members. And they have a lot of fun!”

Deputy Presiding Officer Calarco was also on hand

to help present the “Youth of the Year Award” to Maria Calle. Maria has been a member of the club for many years and has help to organize coat drives, a March for Our Lives bus trip to Washington D.C., and mentor younger children in their schoolwork. Maria will represent the Club at a New York State conference.

VFW Post Reopens Deputy Presiding Officer Rob Calarco was on hand to celebrate the grand re-opening of the Henry James Jones VFW Post 2937 in Medford. After an extensive renovation, the century-old structure is ready once again to host meetings and community events.

“This has been an extensive renovation that the entire community can be proud of,” stated Deputy Presiding Officer Rob Calarco.

“The Veterans have a beautiful space they

can not only meet in, but rent out for community functions, bringing in income that ensures their future.”

Deputy Presiding Officer Rob Calarco, along with the Town of Brookhaven, the Medford Hamlet Foundation, The Medford Taxpayers and Civic Association, the Medford Chamber of Commerce and countless local residents all pitched in financially and physically to bring the historic structure back to life. Local labor unions

donated extensive labor and materials to replace the HVAC system, install a new kitchen and flooring, hang new sheetrock and paint.

“A very special thank you goes to the Long Island Federation of Labor, Laborers Local 66, Plumbers Local 200, IBEW Local 25, and the National Council of Carpenters for all of their time. This project would not have been physically or financially possible without them.

On April 13th, Deputy Presiding Officer Calarco joined hundreds of members of the Patchogue-

Medford community to congratulate the 2018 inductees of the Patchogue-Medford Hall of

Fame.

This year’s new members included teachers, athletes, a world class musician and Sam Stahlman, a World War II veteran of the D-Day Invasion and Purple Heart recipient. Mr. Stahlman was a local businessman, a substitute teacher and a volunteer coach for the high school varsity football team.

“The PatchogueMedford community is proud of our veterans, and Mr. Stahlman is a shining example of the best of our local residents,” stated Deputy Presiding Officer Rob Calarco. “I am so proud of this year’s inductees and I congratulate them on this honor.”

Four students from the Eastern Long Island Academy of Applied Technology received “Best in Show” distinctions at the recent Long Island Media Arts Show held in Dix Hills at the Five Towns College campus.

The Academy is the Career and Technical Education Program of Eastern Suffolk BOCES and has schools in Oakdale, Bellport, and Riverhead.

One Academy student was recognized for his work in the videography category and three were recognized for their art in the photography division.

The Long Island Media Arts Show provides a forum for high school students across the region to showcase their graphic arts, photography, and videography in an environment where they receive evaluations

from experienced judges who work in these fields. Students receive feedback from industry professionals and view the work of their peers from across Long Island. The show has been produced by the Eastern Suffolk BOCES Arts-in-Education Department, a program that integrates the arts into K-12 curriculum to enhance learning, for the past 28 years.

Technology is the future, and digital communication has opened many doors for people around the world. Although younger generations have grown up with technology at their fingers, Baby Boomers and older adults did not. But in spite of that, studies show that growing numbers of seniors are open to the idea of technology and even seeking ways to further their use and knowledge.

by Pew Research Center, 59 percent of seniors regularly use the internet — a 6 percent increase from the previous study conducted in 2012. Today, 67 percent of adults age 65 and older say they go online.

Pew also says that, although seniors consistently have lower rates of technology adoption than the general public, four in 10 seniors now own smartphones, which is more than double the amount that did in 2013. Seniors in Australia are especially tech savvy, as Deloitte’s mobile consumer survey found 78 percent of Australian seniors aged 65 to 75 own a smartphone, up from 69 percent in 2016.

While stereotypes have long painted seniors as technologically inept, seniors are actually more socially and digitally

engaged than ever before. Seniors use technology in many different ways. Some use mobile apps to manage medications and doctor’s appointments and monitor their fitness regimens.

Some families employ 24/7 alert systems or smarthome technology to keep seniors comfortable and safe at home for as long as possible. Noninvasive, “smart” technology can analyze factors such as whether or not doors are left open, if there has been movement in a home or whether appliances/lights are on or off. This represents a great way for families to stay informed and provide assistance even if they are not nearby.

SilverSurfers, a senior-based information website, says other tech that seniors are embracing includes online dating; audio and digital books; online shopping, which is especially valuable to seniors who have mobility issues; and social media, which can keep seniors connected to others and feeling less lonely.

A study conducted by researchers from the University of California, San Francisco found 18 percent of American seniors live alone, and 43 percent report feeling lonely on a regular basis. Loneliness can increase death risk. Social media and internet connectivity can be an important tool in helping seniors feel like active members of society.

Technology is no longer just for teenagers or active workers. Seniors are increasingly embracing technology and becoming a fast-growing demographic for tech usage.

Longwood Central School District has been honored, for the tenth time, as one of the nation’s best communities for music education by The National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation for an outstanding commitment to music education.

The Best Communities for Music Education designation is awarded to districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement in efforts to provide music access and education to all students. To qualify for the Best Communities designation, Longwood answered detailed questions about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities, support for the music program, and community music-making programs.

Responses were verified with school officials and reviewed by The Music Research Institute at the University of Kansas.

“Being named among the best for music education in America enables us to let others know what we’ve known for a long time –

that our music education program is well-supported by our Board of Education and administration, and by our community as a whole,” said Dr. John J. Gallagher, Director of Fine Arts. “Our students are consistently selected for local, regional and state-level music festivals, earning high ratings for their performance abilities and partake in many performance-based opportunities outside of school as well.”

This award recognizes that Longwood is leading the way with learning opportunities as outlined in the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA).

The legislation guides implementation in the states and replaces the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) which was often criticized for an overemphasis on testingwhile leaving behind subjects such as music.

ESSA recommends music and the arts as essential elements of a well-rounded education for all children.

Research into music education continues to demonstrate educational/

cognitive and social skill benefits for children who make music. In a series of landmark studies by scientists and researchers at Northwestern University a link was found between students in community music programs and lifelong academic success, including higher high school graduation rates and college attendance.

In another study from the University, it was discovered that the benefits of early exposure to music education improve how the brain processes and assimilates sounds, a trait that lasts well into adulthood.

The NAMM Foundation is a nonprofit supported in part by the National Association of Music Merchants and its approximately 10,300 members around the world. The foundation advances active participation in music making across the lifespan by supporting scientific research, philanthropic giving, and public service programs.

The program also includes a Weigh to Recycle component that offers students the opportunity to perform much of the recycling themselves and allow them to measure their results.

Each week, students will be encouraged to help empty their classroom paper bin and bring the materials to a designated area where it can be weighed on an industrial scale.

The students will be able to keep track of the amount of paper that is recycled in the building, log the data, and at the end of the month announce the amount of paper that was recycled and the environmental benefit in quantifiable terms.

The New York State Shared Services Initiative signed into law by Governor Andrew M. Cuomo allows participating municipalities and school districts to be eligible for state matching funds for savings achieved through

cooperative efforts. Suffolk County is currently working on a number of programs with towns, villages and school districts in a plan that was approved unanimously by municipal leaders last year. Matching funds will be applied for in conjunction with the Shared Services Initiative as well as efforts to obtain recycling grants from New York State.

The Suffolk School Recycling Program is modeled off of the awardwinning Town of North Hempstead School Recycling Partnership Program. The initiative was launched in 2008 under then-North Hempstead Supervisor Jon Kaiman, in which the Town distributed recycling bins to every single classroom and office in each of its participating 11 school districts. To date, more than 46,000 students have participated in the program. The Town was the recipient of the New York State Environmental Excellence Award in 2009 in recognition of the program’s success.

Suffolk School Recycling Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today launched the first of its kind Suffolk School Recycling Program, a partnership between Suffolk County and six school districts that will help schools meet their New York State recycling mandate, save taxpayer dollars and teach students, faculty and the community to become stewards of the environment.

Suffolk County will deploy approximately 1,000 recycle bins to 11 schools, enabling nearly 6,000 students to participate in the program.

“The School Recycling Pilot Program is the latest innovation for how municipalities can work together to reduce their carbon footprint,” said County Executive Bellone. “I want to thank our school district superintendents and Winter Brothers for their willingness to participate in this groundbreaking program and bring these best practices into the classroom.”

Under the program,

schools will be able to reduce the frequency of trash pickup and dumpster volume while diverting more recyclables from entering into the trash.

With the potential of thousands of students learning the importance of recycling and engaging in the process themselves, this will prevent vast amounts of paper and plastic that are generated from schools from ending up in waste streams. Based on its own analysis, Suffolk County will initially tap into 5,798 students with the launch of the pilot program, utilizing them as a resource to recycle in the classroom.

Suffolk County anticipates working with more school districts in the near future to rollout the recycling program on a full scale. Those who participate will be required to sign an intermunicipal agreement that clarifies the respective roles and responsibilities of the various municipal partners. The initial school districts participating in the pilot include:

• Elwood School District • Brentwood School District • Hampton Bays School District • Remsenburg-Speonk School District • Middle Country School District • Quogue School District Program Supplies Each school will receive two recycling bins in each classroom, office, cafeteria, and athletic field, along with scales that will allow the students to measure recycled materials and report on environmental impact.

Elementary and Middle Schools Every classroom, shared space and office will receive two recycling bins with specialized lids, with one for paper and one for comingles such as empty plastic, glass and aluminum.

Each building will be supplied with one industrial scale to participation the “Weigh to Recycle Program and measure the results of their success.

High Schools

Every classroom, shared space and office will receive on recycle bin with a specialized lid for all mixed recyclables including paper, plastic, glass and aluminum.

All Buildings The custodial staff of each building will receive 50 gallon rolling bins to collect the recyclables.

Each cafeteria will receive a recycling center, outdoor bins will be supplied for athletic fields, and an additional dumpster will be supplied for each school by the carter.

School Recycling Manual Suffolk County will provide participating school districts with a School Recycling Manual, which will serve as a guide for the schools in understanding the various aspects of the program including the process of recycling, the program implementation, items that are considered recyclable and nonrecyclable, program supplies and many more.

Holy Trinity High School gym, Hicksville – The second annual Diocesan STEM Fair was held at Holy Trinity High School on Saturday and provided a showcase for many of the outstanding projects from individual Catholic elementary schools. The fair, which displayed and demonstrated 85 different student projects, highlights the rigorous STEM education programs that are in place at the Diocesan schools.

The program, which is orchestrated by Assistant Superintendent Anthony Biscione brings together some of the best and brightest science students from all across Long Island. “The program is unique because it connects our schools at multiple levels.” Stated Biscione.

All of the projects, which are created by elementary students, are peer reviewed by Honors science students from St. John the Baptist and Holy Trinity Diocesan high schools, by science teachers from the high schools, by educators from St. John’s University,

and by officials from LITEEA, the Long Island Technology Engineering Education Association” Biscione stated. In addition to the student’s exhibits in the gym, this year’s event included something called the ‘Mercy Contraption’, a Rube Goldberg type of device that was conceived, created and demonstrated by the students from Our Lady of Mercy elementary school in Hicksville.

While each project demonstrated at the STEM Fair qualified to be part of the event by winning their respective local events, there were a number of projects identified and recognized at the STEM Fair for their outstanding effort.

Projects were broken out into two levels; level one was for students from the 5th and 6th grades and level 2 was for 7th and 8th grade students.

Because the focus is on helping students develop problem-solving skills, the students’ instructions were to pick a problem, identify a proposed solution, then create a prototype that demonstrates your

solution. The winning projects included the level 1 winner by Matthew Zaromatidis from Notre Dame School in New Hyde Park. Matthew’s project explored the design for earthquake-proof buildings. Of the level 2 competitors, the judges liked David Solan’s app for day-planning best. David is a student at St. Patrick School in Huntington.

Each level recognized the top three projects and the winners took home gift cards of $75, 50 and 25 dollars respectively acknowledging their first, second or third place finishes. “Of course, each student who gets to this level is a winner” Stated Diocesan Schools Superintendent Dr. Kathleen Walsh, “and each was recognized with a certificate in an award ceremony that followed the fair.” Walsh and Biscione personally handed out the awards and congratulated all of the participating students and their rightfully proud parents.

Long Island sisters Jenn Rogak and Rachel Joffe are walking in the LI2Day Walk, a 13.1 mile walk to be held on June 9th in Shirley in Suffolk County.

The annual event raises funds for breast cancer organizations and research programs on Long Island.

Jenn and Rachel are on the Adelphi Team and they have raised funds for the LI2Day Walk. The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program, located in Garden City, is a beneficiary of the event

and provides emotional support, counseling and information to people coping with a diagnosis of breast cancer. Says Jenn, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who lives in Stony Brook, “I walk to support and honor so many people who have been affected by breast cancer. Just this past year alone four of my friends (who are in their early 40's) were diagnosed with breast cancer. I have witnessed the physical and emotional impact breast cancer can have on individuals.”

Rachel, a Greenlawn resident and also a social worker, participated in the walk last year. “I like this walk because the money is paid directly to agencies that add to the quality of life of someone diagnosed with breast cancer. I like that 100% of the proceeds are given back,” she says.

There is a registration fee of $75 and each walker is encouraged to raise a minimum of $500. To raise the funds to participate Rachel and Jen did a charitable 50/50 super bowl pool. There is also an opportunity for those who can’t walk, but still would like to participate by raising money to register as a “virtual walkers.” There is no registration fee or fundraising requirement for virtual walkers. Weekly training walks are held in Eisenhower Park as well as in Heckscher State Park.

Unused prescription medications can be a temptation for curious teenagers and others to experiment with opiates or other drugs. Northwell Health has made one of its missions to help curb the opioid epidemic in New York State through its Northwell Health Opioid Management Steering Committee, which is an outgrowth of the successful pilot program at Southside Hospital.

There were 2,726 deaths

related to opioids in New York State in 2015, according to the New York State Department of Health, up from 2,256 the prior year. New York City saw 893 of those deaths; there were 463 more on Long Island.

“Hearing these staggering numbers each year breaks my heart and has prompted us at Northwell Health to aggressively work in a variety of ways to try to lessen the amount of opiate and prescription drug abuse in our area,” said Jonathan Morgenstern, PhD, assistant vice president of addiction services at Northwell Health.
