Many people are quick to think of growing older in a negative light. Although there certainly are some side effects of aging that one may wish to avoid, people may find that the benefits of growing older outweigh the negatives.

Seniors are a rapidly growing segment of the population. In the United States, the Administration on Aging states that the older population — persons 65 years or older — numbered 46.2 million in 2014 (the latest year for which data is available).

Statistics Canada reports that, in July 2015, estimates indicated that there were more persons aged 65 years and older in Canada than children aged 0 to 14 years for the first time in the country’s history. Nearly one in six Canadians (16.1%) was at least 65 years old.

With so many people living longer, it’s time to

celebrate the perks of getting older rather than the drawbacks. Here are some great benefits to growing old.

• Higher self-esteem: The insecurities of youth give way as one ages, and older people have less negativity and higher self-esteem. A University of Basel study of people ranging in ages from 18 to 89 found that regardless of demographic and social status, the older one gets the higher self-esteem climbs. Qualities like selfcontrol and altruism can contribute to happiness.

• Financial perks: Seniors are entitled to discounts on meals, museum entry fees, movies, and other entertainment if they’re willing to disclose their age. Discounts are available through an array of venues if one speaks up. Seniors also can enjoy travel perks, with slashed prices on resorts, plane

tickets and more. The U.S. National Park Service offers citizens age 62 and older lifetime passes to more than 2,000 federal recreation sites for just $10 in person ($20 online or via mail).

• Reasoning and problem-solving skills: Brain scans reveal that older adults are more likely to use both hemispheres of their brains simultaneously — something called bilateralization.

This can sharpen reasoning skills.

For example, in a University of Illinois study, older air traffic controllers excelled at their cognitively taxing jobs, despite some losses in shortterm memory and visual spatial processing. Older controllers proved to

• Less stress: As people grow older, they are able to differentiate their needs from wants and focus on

All on one Wednesday night, Sayville families from Sunrise Drive came in droves to the elementary school to celebrate a variety of student achievements at the recent annual “An Evening at Sunrise” event.

First, there was the Sunrise Drive ScienceTechnology Fair. While the Science Expo was open to students in grades kindergarten through third, students in fourth and fifth grades were required to participate in the education mandate that teaches them how to present their ideas in a visual display. The creativity and curiosity of the students who researched these Sunrise Drive science projects such as, See the Sea Salt, The Naked Egg, Battle of the Detergents, Do Cats Have a Dominant Paw? to name just a few, were wonderful to see. Even Dr. Know-it-all (who bore a striking resemblance to Sunrise Drive Principal Dr.

April’s Charity of the Month is: Operation S.P.L.A.S.H.

Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. is a non-profit volunteer ran organization that is committed to improving the quality of life on Long Island Shores. Their mission is to provide a low cost solution to the growing problem of waterfront pollution through public awareness, community action and your participation. S.P.L.A.S.H. stands for Stop Polluting, Littering and Save Harbors.

This organization holds Beach, Bay and Waterway Clean-Ups and operates several other projects such as Street Storm Drains, Ocean-Bay Water Exchange, No Wake Zones, Clean Marina Program, Youth Education Programs and more.

They have successfully rescued 2,498,267 pounds of trash from our waters! Also, aside from collecting trash they also have had an amazing impact on the amount of sewage being dumped in our bays. To reduce the flow of trash into our bays, they have collaborated on the funding and installation of more than 4,000 street storm drain inserts in Nassau County.

to mention an important issue that I learned more about from their President.

This topic is the common act of releasing balloons into the air. Balloons are a type of marine debris that many people don’t tend to think about. Balloons are frequently accidentally or even intentionally released into the environment and once they go up, they must also come down. A very sad reality is that many times balloons are found in the stomachs of dead marine mammals.

Balloons and their ribbons are in the top 5 items of marine debris found on beach cleanups, and Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. volunteers have removed 6,179 balloons from our South Shore Bays and Beaches over the last 4 years.

Additionally, the following volunteer positions are currently still available: Boat Crew Members and Boat Maintenance and Repair Members.

It has been a pleasure featuring Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. and all they do.

Together we can continue to better our waterways and shorelines, making them more clean and safe, which will make Long Island an even better place to live!

In celebration of the 50th Anniversary of OakdaleBohemia Middle School, students of all grade levels recently took part in a number of exciting activities geared toward celebrating the history of the school’s half-century of existence.

This past January, members of the school’s social studies staff asked if they could create a historical research project

for their students to teach them about the history of the school.

The sixth-grade teachers proposed having students look at artifacts from a time capsule in the building, as well as observing trends from 1969 to present day by reviewing yearbooks from the past. In doing so, the teachers set up the artifacts from the capsule in library like an archeological dig on a table. Students rotated

through several tables with yearbooks by decade and reviewed particular areas such as sports, fashion, clubs and activities during their time spent on the activity.

Seventh-grade students decided to present an oral history lesson, and reached out to former teachers, students and administration through social media to see if they’d come to the school to speak to the students.

The students then created questions related to school rules, lunch, structure of the sports teams, attire for students, etc. and presented their findings during a highly informative PowerPoint presentation.

For their aspect of the celebration, eighth-graders decided to have students investigate the history of the school. The young historians looked at factual information such as the

original blueprints for the building, reviewed why the school was built on this property, the population at that time, cost of food and household products, jobs in the area and the average salary at the time.

The OBMS staff worked closely with library media specialist Mairead McInnes, Assistant to the Superintendent John Allen and the Connetquot Library in order to obtain historical

records for students to review.

The district would also like to thank OakdaleBohemia Middle School Principal Susanne Baily, Assistant Principal Joe Piombo and social studies teachers Dr. Carmela Gustafson and Robert Burger for setting up the logistics for this exciting and meaningful project for the students.

The aging process can lead to a relaxation of the throat muscles, resulting in snoring. Furthermore, the NSF says anatomical abnormalities of the nose and throat, illness and other factors may also contribute to snoring.

Drinking alcohol, which can have an effect similar to muscle relaxants, in the evening can make snoring worse.

While many people may think snoring is a mere nuisance, it actually may be a symptom of obstructive sleep apnea.

Over time, apnea can be

associated with high blood pressure and increased risks of heart attack, stroke or death, advises WebMD. Now there is new evidence that those with obstructive sleep apnea may be at a higher risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease as well. A new study published in the Journal of Neurology found that people with sleep apnea tended to develop memory problems and other signs of cognitive impairment earlier than people without such sleep disorders.

Richard Osorio, MD, a research assistant professor of psychiatry at the NYU Center for Brain Health, found that, among 2,000 people studied, those who reported having sleep apnea or snoring tended to develop signs of mild cognitive impairment, including memory lapses and slower speed on cognitive skills, about 12

years earlier on average than those who didn’t report any sleep-related breathing issues. Mild cognitive impairment often precedes dementia related

Some researchers believe snoring and sleep apnea may contribute to a buildup of the toxic protein in the brain called

beta-amyloid, which is a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias.

If snoring has become problematic, men are

urged to visit a doctor or sleep specialist to see which therapies can be instituted to help improve sleep and overall health.

A series of science stations at Samoset Middle School in the Sachem Central School District reinforced important curriculum concepts for sixth-grade students during a recent workshop led by the Brookhaven National Laboratory.

As part of the hands-on workshop, students rotated between stations that examined science topics, including gravity, motion, friction and force. At one

station, students were tasked with constructing a roller coaster for a marble to travel through while being mindful of how speed and momentum affected the marble’s travel. At another station, students examined how different surfaces can affect travel and distance as they rolled a toy car down a ramp.

While testing each surface, students collected data on the tests they conducted.

In an additional station,

Force and Motion the students studied energy transfer by playing a game where they hit one marble into another, knocking it from a circle and reflecting on the result that speed and force had on the collision.

This timely visit from the Brookhaven National Laboratory served as an engaging review to conclude the recent science unit on force and motion.

PEER EDUCATION PROGRAM - The Bayport-Blue Point High School recently celebrated Peer Education Program Day, as members of the school organization visited a number of English and social studies classes throughout the building to share various lessons focusing on the power of connection and healthy communication. While visiting the classrooms, the students spoke about forging friendships and promoted antibullying techniques. Additionally, they engaged in a series of fun icebreaker activities, such as passing along an “energy stick” while holding hands in a circle and using nonverbal communication to line up in a certain order within the classroom.

Internship and Career Connection Sachem high school students recently explored an eclectic assortment of future opportunities during the second annual Internship and Career Connection hosted at Sachem High School North.

The expansive event featured 28 local businesses and organizations that provided junior and senior students with information on future career and internship opportunities.

The long list of groups who participated in the event included the New York Jets, Sachem Public Library, Nichols College, Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising, Seeds of Achievement, the Boy Scouts of America, Splish Splash, RE/MAX Real

Estate, Techworks, Civil Air Patrol, the United States Marine Corps, Long Island Community Hospital, the United States Army, RG Financial Investment Solutions, the United States Navy, Ronald McDonald House, Bob’s Stores, National Tax and Financial Services, New York City Police Department, American Pools, Keiser University, RFC Fence, Suffolk County Police Department, Accucare Health, the National Guard, First National Bank, FDNY and the Guitar Guy.

For a second year, Physical Education teacher Beth Bolger at Lincoln Avenue elementary school in Sayville has been training her K-5 students in Hands-Only CPR and preparing them to be proactive during an emergency. “I teach my students that they are never too young to save a life.”

After last year’s successful, two-week unit, when Coach Bolger

introduced her students to Hands-Only CPR during their Water Safety Unit, this year she selected February—American Heart Month—for this important lesson.

“Hands-Only CPR is CPR without mouth-tomouth breaths,” Bolger explained, “And has been shown to be as effective as CPR with breaths in the first few minutes of out-ofhospital, sudden, cardiac arrest.” Seeing a person

suddenly collapse in any setting can be frightening to adults and children alike. However, HandsOnly CPR is teaching these elementary students what to do should they find themselves in such a situation. They have been drilled to remember the two, easy steps: “First, call 911 or send someone to call. Second, push hard and fast in the center of the chest.”

Within the training

Hands-Only CPR sessions, the Sayville students have been taught to look for signs and symptoms of someone in distress, as well as what to do until help comes. “We teach the students,” Bolger continued, “to give chest compressions to the beat of the Bee Gees’ disco song Stayin’ Alive. The song is 100 beats per minute which is the minimum rate you should push on the chest during HandsOnly CPR. The tone is

very catchy and helps the students remember the rate of compressions.”

Seventy percent of all out-of-hospital cardiac arrests happen at home and raises the likelihood that people called upon to respond are trying to save the life of someone they love. Knowing Hand- Only CPR can give the gift of life.

For this Sayville teacher, physical education should be more than learning to be active. “We teach our

students the skills they need to lead a lifetime of health and fitness,” Coach Bolger stated, adding that, “It is equally as important to teach them how to save the lives of others.”

Lessons these eager Lincoln Avenue elementary students have taken to heart.
