Over the last 12 years, the school has raised around $125,000 for the AHA. This money was collected as part of the school’s 2016 Jump Rope for Heart Program, where students jumped, climbed and participated in a variety of physical activities, while others pledged their financial support.

Random Rambles It’s been a rough year. Less than four months in and, well, I know many people who are already looking for a do-over. Sure, every period of time has its ups and downs, highs and lows. But honestly, since the moment the ball dropped in Times Square this past New Year’s Eve, it seems that everything began falling right along with it. At least it’s Spring. There is something uplifting about sunshine-filled afternoons and flower blossoms that does bring a smile to the face, however fleeting it may be. And of course, those sunworshippers among us have to be looking forward to

summer and beach outings and barbeques. But until then… It’s April. April 15th, to be exact, as I write these words. Tax Day (although, technically speaking, we were graced with a few extra days tacked on to the filing deadline this year). The Easter Bunny has come and gone. Baseball diamonds are abuzz with activity. Pretty soon, school will be out of session and the parks and pools will be flooded with families having fun. And so it goes. From dawn until dusk, one season into the next, day after day, week after week, month after month; until, before you know it, a decade has passed in the blink of an eye. In just a couple of

weeks, I will be celebrating my 11th year as editor and columnist at this very paper. How much has changed in that span of time… The best thing we can do – the only thing, really – is to embrace each day, with all its nuances, and appreciate whatever it may bring into our respective lives. The list of things beyond our control is endless; the key to happiness lies in how we react to them, what we learn from them, and how we use them to better ourselves as individuals. I’m no philosopher, but that much I’ve picked up in my 33 years roaming this planet. Here’s wishing everyone a brighter tomorrow… and the day after… and the day after…

(LICADD) was awarded a $5,000 grant from the Richard & Mary Morrison Foundation for the Building Unique Dynamic and Diverse Youth (BUDDY) program. in competitive federal grant funding from the Administration for Children and Families, BUDDY addresses the critical needs of the most vulnerable members of our community, children whose parents have been incarcerated due to substance abuse. Despite the elimination of federal funds, LICADD has not only maintained, but grown BUDDY into a robust program that has to date, successfully matched 75 at-risk children with screened/trained adult mentors. Enrollment in the program has quadrupled over the last three year with 61% of matches recommitting to a second year in the program. LICADD’s BUDDY Mentoring Program provides children with a positive adult-child relationship on a stable and predictable basis. The BUDDY Program’s goals are to enhance the protective factors in children of parents incarcerated by helping them to create

NATIONAL CHAMPIONS - At the April 7th Town Board Meeting, Councilman Kevin LaValle and the Town Board honored the Sachem East and Sachem North Varsity Arrowettes Dance Teams for winning the 2016 National Dance Alliance (NDA) National Championship held in Orlando, Florida. Sachem East won in the Medium Varsity Jazz category and also won the Long Island Championships in the Jazz, Hip Hop, Kick and Team categories on their way to the National Championship. Sachem North won in the Small Varsity Jazz, Small Varsity Hip Hop and Small Varsity Team categories and was nominated for a Sportsmanship Award. On Long Island, they were undefeated for their second year in a row, participating in three competitions and receiving 12 first place finishes. In addition, they performed at a Memorial Festival at Smithtown West High School in honor of a Smithtown West alumni who tragically passed away.

meeting. The Gemini Youth Orchestras is composed of 250 musicians from across Long Island, who perform in ensembles including the Concert Winds, Philharmonia, String Orchestra, Repertory and Youth Symphony. Gemini students perform in venues across the metropolitan region.

Flock of Eagles

On April 10th, Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine attended the Eagle Court of Honor ceremony for Troop 64 of Coram. The following scouts earned the rank of Eagle Scout: John Hernandez, Jonathan Lazan, George DeLucia, Kyle Trestka and Gilbert Burgos. To become an Eagle Scout, a scout must first work his way through all Boy Scout ranks while completing certain requirements such as earning Merit Badges, holding a leadership position within the troop and completing a

community service project. John’s project was to install a 100-foot flower bed at the St. James Fire Department substation that is part of the 9/11 Memorial at the firehouse. Jonathon’s project was the beautification of a garden in front of Hope Lutheran Church in Selden. This included removing bushes and many weeds from the area, relocating the anchor, repairing the cross and installing benches next to the pond. George’s project was a portable information kiosk for the Longwood Estate in

East Yaphank. The kiosk is designed to give the reader a general idea about the history of the house and what life was like in the past. Kyle’s project was building six bird rehabilitation boxes for Sweet Briar Nature Preserve in St. James. Gilbert’s project consisted of cleaning up the basement, replacing damaged ceiling tiles, light covers, installing a projector in the basement of Trinity United Methodist Church in Coram.

HUGS Program. “I spent a lot of time in the hospital when I was younger,” said Brigit. “I remember how wonderful it felt when the hospital gave me a stuffed animal to hold. It just made me feel better and I wanted to provide comfort for someone else. I just wanted

to return the favor.” The HUGS Program provides stuffed animals to relieve anxiety and provide comfort to frightened children and older adults in the Emergency Room, laboratory and ambulatory surgery pavilion and on the hospital floors.

On April 11th, Supervisor Romaine and the Town Board hosted the fourth annual Mayors Day of Recognition for National Service event in Brookhaven Town Hall. At the event, volunteers from throughout the Town who are Foster Grandparents and Senior

Citizen Companions were honored with Certificates of Appreciation. The annual Mayors Day of Recognition highlights the impact of volunteer service on the community. In Brookhaven Town, 54 Foster Grandparent volunteers serve in 15 schools. There are

History Comes Alive On Wednesday, March 30th, the Connetquot Public Library presented a historical program highlighting an important and intriguing aspect of our nation’s history, George Washington’s Long Island Spy Ring. Historian and former Director of the Three Village Historical Society in Setauket, Elizabeth Kahn Kaplan, and “separated folklore from fact” during her informative discussion about the most successful spy ring of the American Revolution. Through a PowerPoint presentation with a series of drawings and famous paintings, Kaplan tells the story of how a group of Long Island Patriots changed the course of the American Revolution. She provided a timeline of events from the first battle of the Revolutionary War, to the presentation of the Declaration of Independence to the Second Continental Congress, the arrival of British troops in New York Harbor, the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the Battle of Long Island. Outnumbered, the battle

emphasized the stark differences between the fortified and well-prepared British troops and the illequipped American troops at the beginning of a war that would last seven years. General George Washington sought out a volunteer spy to gather intelligence on British troop movement. The first volunteer, Nathan Hale, was captured and eventually hung. Washington’s Chief of Intelligence, Benjamin Tallmadge then became the leader of the Culper spy ring. Born in Setauket, Tallmadge recruited three of his trusted childhood friends to participate, Abraham Woodhull, Caleb Brewster and Austin Roe also of Setauket. The fifth member of the spy ring, Robert Townsend of Oyster Bay joined the ring at the urging of Abraham Woodhull. Tallmadge developed a sophisticated system of numbers assigned to each individual, a series of codes, embedded messages and the use of invisible ink to preserve the safety of the spy ring, its members and correspondence. Through this intricate web, messages were transported

to General Washington. In 1780 French troops headed to Newport Rhode Island to assist the Patriots in their fight for independence. With this discovery, British troops headed to Newport. The Culper ring sent a false message about an impending invasion of New York and the British turned around and headed back. This event turned the tide of the American Revolution and the fight for independence. This 55 mile trek from Setauket to New York City was a lifeline in the battle for independence. Long Island has a rich and varied history. As you drive through its towns, streets and boulevards, the names reflect its proud and prolific past. Through books, periodicals and innovative programming, the library brings history to life and preserves it for future generations. Scholar Awarded

Kristen Campo of Middle Island, a Suffolk County Community College student and math whiz, was selected by the New York State Mathematics Association of Two-year Colleges Scholarship

Committee (NYSMATYC) for The Dan Dodway Memorial Scholar award, the group has announced. The Dodway award is one of the highest scholarships given annually by the group.

The Dan Dodway Award - a $1,000 scholarship recognizes a top student with an interest in teaching mathematics. Dodway was a professor of mathematics at Broome Community College who served as NYSMATYC’s 21st president. NYSMATYC awards are granted annually to mathematics students in New York State who expect to transfer from a two-year college in January or June and who plan to continue their studies in mathematics or a related field. The awards were formally announced on Friday, April 8th, 2016 at the NYSMATYC Annual Conference in Kingston, NY. Campo will attend Stony Brook University in the fall to study mathematics.

INSTALLATION HONOREE - On April 2nd, Councilman Michael Loguercio attended the Brookhaven Fire Department’s annual installation dinner held at the Watermill Inn in Smithtown. At the event, the Councilman swore in the incoming officers and presented certificates of appreciation to the outgoing officers. He also presented a certificate to Murray Fink Chief’s Award winner Patrick Perry in recognition of his outstanding service and dedication.

CLEAN-UP EFFORTS - At the April 7th Town Board Meeting, Councilman Michael Loguercio and the Town Board honored the Longwood High School Environmental Club who participated in the “Trout Unlimited Carmans River Clean Up.” On March 26th, the students, their advisors and members of the Art Flick Chapter of Trout Unlimited walked the river for 3/4 of a mile, collecting over 300 lbs. of garbage, trash and debris.

Jonathon’s project was the beautification of a garden in front of Hope Lutheran Church in Selden. This included removing bushes and many weeds from the area, relocating the anchor, repairing the cross and installing benches next to the pond. George’s project was a portable information kiosk

for the Longwood Estate in East Yaphank. The kiosk is designed to give the reader a general idea about the history of the house and what life was like in the past. Kyle’s project was building six bird rehabilitation boxes for Sweet Briar Nature Preserve in St. James. Gilbert’s project consisted of cleaning up the basement, replacing damaged ceiling tiles, light covers, installing a projector in the basement of Trinity United Methodist Church in Coram.

Recently, Esposito took the students to the Plumbers Local #200 of the United Association in Bohemia. They were given a tour and explored career opportunities available through the union. Esposito said, “The Plumbers Union offers apprenticeship and journeymen training programs. Students graduating from my class will have an advantage because they are learning fundamental skills. If they get accepted into an

apprenticeship program, their skills will increase because they will be working with and learning from the best trained contractors.” Students in the Plumbing and Heating Program have the option of taking the National Center for Construction Education Research (NCCER) exam and are placed on the NCCER’s National Registry. The registry provides valuable industry credentials.

Connetquot School District’s Cherokee Street Elementary School students and staff recently raised $20,000 for the American Heart Association (AHA) and heart disease research. Over the last 12 years, the school has raised around $125,000 for the AHA. This money was collected for the AHA as part of the

school’s 2016 Jump Rope for Heart Program, where students jumped, climbed and participated in a variety of physical activities while family and friends pledged their financial support. The whole community supported the fundraiser for the AHA, and two students were recognized for their outstanding service. 5th grade student

at Cherokee Street Elementary School Nicholas Ciatto received an “Outstanding Community Service Award” from the AHA for donating over $1,000 each year since kindergarten. Cherokee Street Elementary School first grade student Anthony Santiago was also recognized for raising $1,500 this year.

During his career, Joe served his profession as National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA) District Director, Eastern Athletic Trainers’ Association (EATA) Secretary-

Treasurer for 17 years and played a strong role in NYSATA. He served as an athletic trainer at both the 1968 Mexico City Olympics and at the Lake Placid Games in 1968. AWARDS PRESENTATION - The Town of Oyster Bay Arts Council’s 2016 Annual Awards Presentation & Reception for Talent Competition and Scholarship Winners was recently held at the Seymour Weiner Theatre, at the Long Island High School for the Arts in Syosset. The event celebrates inspiring works in vocal music, instrumental music, dance, film, and literature. The Town of Oyster Bay Arts Council presented scholarships to the winning 2016 Artists for creating such beautiful and stunning works of performing, visual and literary arts.

To conclude the ceremony we have invited the voices of choirs and chorus’s from around Long Island. Members of the New Apostolic Church and the Willow Interfaith Women’s Choir will lead the attendees and participants in singing “Clouds,” a beautifully touching song written by Zach Sobiech, who touched so many lives with this song, and continue to do so despite losing his battle

to cancer a few years ago. (You can view this song by searching for it on YouTube or clicking here.) Upon its completion, the attendees will then follow a path around Salisbury Lake, hopefully inspired to look up at the clouds, knowing their child has been remembered and cherished. The walk, which is less than a mile long, will conclude at the statue. We hope to invoke the feeling of faith

and hope and make this event an inspiring day for all who participate. We truly believe this type of event will help families dealing with the loss of a child during Mother’s Day weekend. Umps Visit Vets When Major League Baseball Umpire Jerry Layne talks, people listen. Whether calling balls and strikes in major league games or telling amusing baseball anecdotes to injured and ill veterans at VA medical centers - he gets attention. He’ll be telling those stories and more to veterans on April 14th, during a special celebrity visit to the VA NY Harbor Healthcare System, in New York. Umpires have the reputation of being gruff, no nonsense guys who don’t want their judgment questioned, but Jerry’s heart overflows when he visits injured

and ill veterans in VA medical centers. He’s been umpiring in the majors since 1988, a profession which demands that he visit each city on the major league circuit. It’s during those trips that he takes time to visit veterans who are patients in VA medical centers as part of the DAV VA Voluntary Service (VAVS) program. “I want to bring smiles and brighter days to those veterans who have given so much to our country,” Mr. Layne said. “I want them to know they are appreciated.” There are 197 VA medical centers in the US which treat the 2.3 million

veterans represented by the DAV. Many veterans spend long, lonely hours during lengthy hospital stays and Mr. Layne’s visits are enthusiastically welcomed. Major League Baseball Umpire Larry Barnett started the hospital visit program in 1977 as part of the DAV VAVS program and actively recruited Mr. Layne. “We have a free country because veterans made it free and keep it free,” Mr. Layne said. “Brightening the lives of injured and ill veterans with a friendly visit is a very small price to pay for what all Americans owe them.”

Long Island volunteer firefighters, the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY), fire officers, public safety officials, Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano and other elected officials will clang the bell for new recruits Thursday, April 21st, at 11 a.m. at the Nassau County Firefighters Museum & Education Center, on Museum Row in Garden City. FASNY President Robert McConville will kick off Nassau and Suffolk Counties’ sixth annual RecruitNY campaign designed to help increase volunteer membership. The event, to which area firefighters have been invited to attend in dress uniform, and which will showcase fire rigs and apparatus from area departments, is a public service outreach to highlight the need for more volunteer firefighters.

Over the last few years, due to various factors including the state of the economy, family and financial responsibilities and current volunteers aging, retiring, and moving out of state, there has been a reduction in volunteer first-responder numbers. During the RecruitNY 2016 Open House Weekend, Saturday, April 23rd, and Sunday, April 24th, volunteer fire departments across New York State will open their doors and fire truck bays to local residents as part of the statewide volunteer firefighter recruitment effort. Fire departments will conduct tours of their firehouses and fire apparatus, allow visitors to try on turnout gear, and provide visitor activities throughout the firehouse. Members will discuss the rewards and responsibilities that come with being a volunteer

firefighter, as well as conduct demonstrations, answer questions, and let visitors know how to go about joining their fire department.
