They won their respective races in an uncontested election on March 18th. The term for Village Trustee is four years. Ms. Peters has been a Village Trustee since 2007. In 2010, Ms. Lacey was appointed to the Village Trustee post that was vacated by Suellen Leonardo.

Sachem Community Youth Services provides a five week Summer Recreation Program for youth ages 5-12. The program will run from July 6th through August 6th, Monday to Thursday, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

In The Mood By: Jamie Lynn Ryan As a former student of psychology, I am continuously fascinated by those factors which cause a person’s mood to drastically change from one moment to the next, often with no discernable explanation. One minute, happy, positive energy; the next, sullen, negative bitterness. It’s enough to make your head spin.

Of course, there are a million factors that could possibly contribute to such sudden alterations in behavior; but, if you’re like me, you immediately look for the root of the problem. Is it my fault?

Did I do something, say something, unknowingly

cause some perceived slight…what?

Chances are, it’s something else entirely. (Read: Everything is not always about you!)

The thing is, when you’re in a foul frame of mind, it’s difficult to see beyond the black cloud.

Best everyone stay out of your way until the storm has passed, as you can’t be held accountable for your tone, whether impatient, annoyed, indifferent… in short, anything but friendly. Negativity breeds more negativity, and those who dare to cross paths with those in such a state are just asking for trouble.

And so the cycle continues. Day after day of trying to dodge the slings and arrows of those who

ProStart Invitational Five female Eastern Long Island Academy of Applied Technology students from the Milliken Technical Center Culinary Arts Program competed on March 13th and 14th in the 2015 New York State ProStart Invitational at the Culinary Institute of America, Hyde Park, and captured third place.

Their third place finish was commended by an Invitational staff member who stated, “For a team to enter this competition for the very first time in the 12 years it’s been running, and to place third, is simply unheard of! Fabulous job!”

The students were required to create a professional business

proposal for a restaurant they themselves would be interested in opening.

Together this team of five created a restaurant called Husked, which centered itself around gourmet popcorn as both main courses and complementing sides. The students were required to present this proposal to

12 judges and respond to questions afterwards.

In addition, the competition included a critical thinking component in which three judges asked a series of questions based on scenarios that business owners are likely to encounter. The students were required to work

together to provide solutions and prevention plans. Finally, the students were pressed to defend costing and food portion questions presented by two additional judges.

These competitors worked extremely hard on their business plan and the payoff was well worth it. The girls received

thousands of dollars in scholarship money to several different colleges and universities.

The students also toured the campus of nearby Marist College and visited the famous Eveready Diner, featured on Food Network’s Diners, DriveIns and Dives.

Keeping America Beautiful In the spirit of Earth Day, April 22nd, Keep Islip Clean (KIC), a certified affiliate of the national organization Keep America Beautiful, and not-forprofit, 501c3, community service organization, is participating again in the Great American Cleanup.

They will be working tirelessly throughout all of April and May, at various locations throughout the Town of Islip, to clean up and beautify our community. Below are the dates, times, and locations for the largest

Battle Of The Books opportunities to take part in library programming.

From the inception of a Teen Advisory Board to hands on craft and cooking programs, SAT Prep Courses and Pre-Licensing Courses, the library is committed to help educate and enlighten teens.

The library also offers teen a chance to earn community service credits by decorating the library, making crafts for the residents at a local adult home, cards for hospitalized children and veterans. Ferrari, students learned about drunk and distracted driving and the dangers they present when behind the wheel.

Students experienced the effects by wearing “driving while impaired goggles,” which simulate various levels of intoxication by blood alcohol content (BAC).

Students performed (and failed at) a variety of normal tasks in the

classroom, then took to the road to see how they fared on the obstacle course. Law Enforcement Teacher Anthony Biancardi said, “Students quickly realized that drunk driving and distracted driving are dangerous and deadly, and are committed to not engage in either of the illegal acts.”

On Friday, March 13th, the Connetquot Public Library participated in the Advanced Battle of the Books held at Connetquot High School. The “battle” is a county wide inter-library competition consisting of teams answering trivia questions based on selected teen novels. This year’s titles were Anna and the French Kiss, Cinder and Where Things Come Back. La Neuf Connetquot Princesses tied for eighth place out of twenty-one teams led by Teen Librarian Angela Breslin.

This competition fosters a love of reading for teens as well as an opportunity to be a part of something exciting as well as educational. The Connetquot Public Library offers teens numerous

County Executive Steve Bellone, Legislator Steve Stern and the Long Island Ducks announced a new partnership between Suffolk County and the Long Island Ducks to publicly recognize our local veterans and active duty service men and women at every home game during the 2015 season.

“Suffolk County boasts the largest veteran population in all of New York State, with nearly 100,000 United States veterans calling Suffolk County their home, said County Executive Steve Bellone. “Expanding and enhancing services for our veteran population has always been a priority of ours, but there is always more we can do.”

“So today, I along with Legislator Stern and the executive staff of the Long Island Ducks announce a new partnership between Suffolk County and the Long Island Ducks to honor our local veterans and active duty service men and women at every

home game of the Long Island Ducks.”

“The partnership between Suffolk County and the Long Island Ducks to honor our veterans is a home run,” Legislator Steve Stern said. “Our veterans are not only the Heroes of the Night, they are our heroes every day and it is an honor for all of us to say thank you in such a meaningful way.”

The Long Island Ducks, through the support of New York Community Bank and the QuackerJack Foundation, will honor two “Heroes of the Night” at every home game for their selfless and courageous service to our country. Each Hero of the Night will receive ten complimentary tickets to the game at which they will be honored, so that they may bring their family and friends along with them. All “Heroes of the Night” ticket holders will also receive access to the Duck Club, the Long Island Duck’s elite restaurant and bar, reserved for season

ticket and luxury suite holders, located on the club level directly behind home plate.

“We are proud to honor those who have fought and continue to fight, to protect our freedom every day, says Ducks President/ GM Michael Pfaff. “Thanks to the NYCB and Suffolk County, we will be able to create a special memory for the friends and families of each hero we recognize, as well as for each and every Ducks fan at the ballpark.”

“We must do all we can to thank, honor and serve our veterans,” said County Executive Steve Bellone. “Heroes of the Night presents an awesome opportunity to highlight our Suffolk County veterans during one of America’s favorite pastimes.”
