This award recognizes the dedication of the staff of The Vincent Bove Health Center at Jefferson’s Ferry in providing “Best in Class” service in Skilled Nursing. Jefferson’s Ferry’s health center scored in the top 15% of skilled nursing facilities nationwide over a 12-month period of study, excelling in Nursing Care, Cleanliness, Individual Needs, Recommendation to Others, Activities, Admission Process, Safety & Security, and Overall Customer Experience.
“Since our founding more than 20 years ago as Long Island’s first Continuing Care Retirement Community, Jefferson’s Ferry has been committed to providing the highest quality experience in a community setting that promotes dignity, privacy, individuality and independence for every resident,” said Jefferson’s Ferry President and CEO Bob Caulfield. “The Pinnacle Award is a direct reflection of the outstanding work that our employees perform every day. It’s always gratifying to know that our residents recognize our dedication with this vote of confidence.”
Over the course of 2022, a sampling of residents of the Vincent Bove Health Center and their families participated in monthly telephone interviews that asked open-ended questions to rate their experiences in specific categories. Every month, Jefferson’s Ferry staff evaluated the results from the interviews to gain a better understanding of resident needs and make improvements when necessary.
“In addition to the high
marks our residents and their families give us in the Pinnacle survey, they also recommend Jefferson’s Ferry to their friends and family,” added Anthony Comerford, Vice President of Health Service. “Our staff and residents form close relationships based on mutual respect, trust, and quality care.”
“While we don’t come to work looking to win awards, we always do our very best for our residents and families,” concluded Caulfield. “Our goal is always to provide the people who call Jefferson’s Ferry home with the means and peace of mind to live their best life here. It is especially meaningful to know that we are consistently hitting the mark, meeting or exceeding the best standards or practices within our industry. It’s the people who live and work here that make Jefferson’s Ferry the truly special and vibrant community we know so well.”

Helping You Help Others
By Noelle Lambert
The Charity of the Month for April is Rebuilding Together Long Island
www.rebuildingtogether.org
Rebuilding Together
Long Island (RTLI) is a nonprofit organization, headquartered in Farmingdale, serving Nassau County and most of Su olk County. As an a liate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together, their mission is repairing homes, revitalizing communities and rebuilding lives.
To accomplish their vision of safe and healthy homes for everyone, they provide free essential home safety repairs and modifications for economicallydisadvantaged homeowners, whether they are older adults, veterans, families or persons with a disability or limited mobility.
Although RTLI’s teams work year round, April is a particularly important month because it is National Rebuilding Month. “Too many Americans su er from the health and economic consequences of living in substandard housing and under served communities,” said Caroline Blakely, President & CEO of Rebuilding Together. “National Rebuilding Month serves as an annual month-long call to service to encourage people to support their neighbors, strengthen their community and ensure everyone is living in safe and healthy homes.”
RTLI together with its 120 sister a liates will all look to surpass last year’s accomplishment of working with over 13,000 volunteers to repair close to 800 homes and over 150 community centers nationwide. As you drive around Long Island, watch for RTLI’s lawn signs. If you see one, you will know their volunteers are hard at work helping someone who needs a helping hand.
Once accepted into the program, each home receives a safety check of every room. Each home has its own challenges. RTLI also listens to the homeowner to determine their priorities. Hazards and unsafe conditions are noted and given to the volunteer crews so they can prepare a materials list and then
get to work. Minor plumbing and electrical repairs may be made, but they may also do weatherization, flooring (if the current floor is a hazard), sheet rock repair and a myriad of other repairs. If someone has limited mobility, a wheelchair ramp may be constructed, grab bars and railings installed, doorways widened where possible to accommodate a wheelchair. Conversions of bathtubs to walk-in showers can also be done and under certain circumstances, a stair glide may be installed. While RTLI cannot always take care of every issue in the home, they will tell you that every home they work on is left safer than is was and the lives of its residents are improved when the project is complete! So how can you help?
•If you know someone who may benefit from their services, have them call the RTLI o ce at 631.777.7894, Monday – Friday, to see if they qualify for the free program.
•Join the RTLI team! Volunteers can sign up at rebuildingtogetherli.org/ volunteer-today. Currently they are looking for individuals who are fluent in Spanish and for an o ce person, particularly if they are familiar with Salesforce. Additionally, if you are handy with tools, the Nassau and Su olk crew teams are always looking for more help.
•Donate at rebuildingtogetherli. org. RTLI relies on the donations of our neighbors, some grants and corporate sponsorships, as they do not receive any government funding.
•RTLI encourages local business to get involved and sponsor a project. The organization can find the right project for your business to sponsor and you can then promote your generosity on social media to show your commitment to improving the health and safety of someone in need locally.
When we work together, we can bring about transformational change quickly in our communities. Stay tuned for next week’s article to learn more.
If your non-profit would like to be featured in this column, please email noellelambert@longislandmediagroup.com for consideration.

Islanders Visit ‘Sparks’ Positivity At Chippewa Elementary School
Sparky, the beloved New York Islanders mascot, visited Chippewa Elementary School on March 8 to teach students about teamwork and healthy lifestyle choices. Spirits were high as students filled the gymnasium to
welcome Sparky and team representatives.
Students first participated in a series of warm-up activities and exercises led by Sparky. Through an interactive quiz, they learned about making healthy choices in and out of school. A student
and teacher were then chosen from the crowd to dress in goalie equipment. The team that worked best together to get the equipment on the fastest was named the winner of the activity, showing the crowd how “teamwork makes the dream work.”
How Do I Love Thee? Three Couples Count The Ways Breast Cancer Zoom Forum On April 24
In an honest panel discussion, three couples— Cindy and Bruce, Kim and Anthony and Tim and Sandy--will share how they successfully coped when faced with a breast cancer diagnosis. The free forum, sponsored by the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program, will be held on zoom on Monday, April 24, from 4 pm to 5:15 pm.
Even partners who are strongly committed to one another may face difficult moments when confronted with the extraordinary stress of breast cancer. The following three couples will talk about their journeys together through breast cancer and how they have continued to have lives filled with activity and joy.
Cindy and Bruce met on a blind date 41 years ago. They married, and in
1994, Cindy was treated for breast cancer. Sixteen year later, the couple learned that Cindy’s cancer had come back. Cindy had a mastectomy of the same breast, followed by chemotherapy, Cindy recalls the difficulty of trying to juggle it all when first diagnosed. She reached out to the Young Women’s Support Group at Adelphi connecting with others in her situation and gaining the support she needed to move forward. Today, Cindy is a volunteer at the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program.
Kim and Anthony have been together for 10 years, meeting while Kim was working in a restaurant as a bartender. Anthony is a day trader who attended Columbia University where
he was a pitcher for their baseball team. Together they have a daughter named Savannah who is 7 years old. Kim was just 30 years old when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Since 2019, Kim has been a volunteer with the Adelphi Breast Cancer
Program helping others going through a similar diagnosis.
Tim and Sandy met at a mutual friend’s home when Tim was a freshman in college and Sandy a senior in high school. They had been married for 52 years when they learned Tim
had been diagnosed with advanced breast cancer in June 2020. Tim says that not even in their wildest dreams could they have imagined the rollercoaster ride they would embark on. Tim is committed to sharing his story as a volunteer with the Adelphi
Breast Cancer Program and helping other men learn the signs of breast cancer and the importance of performing regular breast self-exams.

Dawn McGrath Named
Assistant Vice President Of Operations At Educational Bus Transportation
Dawn McGrath, a resident of Lindenhurst, NY, has been promoted to Assistant Vice President of Operations at Educational Bus Transportation, which provides student transportation services to a number of school districts in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. The announcement was made by Educational Bus Transportation CEO John Corr.
“For 35 years, Dawn has been part of the Educational Bus family, beginning as a school bus driver before moving on to dispatcher and eventually Operations Manager,” observed Corr. “Every step of the way, she has demonstrated a steadfast commitment to excellence and safety. She is a consummate professional who possesses the skills and ability that are essential to excellence in student transportation. Everyone at Educational Bus Transportation joins me in congratulating Dawn as she begins her next chapter as Assistant Vice President of Operations.”
According to Corr,
McGrath will report directly to Patti Royce-Moser, Vice President of Operations, helping to provide support, leadership, and direction to Educational Bus Transportation’s operating locations throughout Long Island. She will also help control the daily operation of all transportation contracts, in compliance with the policies of the contracting agencies and in conformance with company policies and procedures.
Last year, McGrath received The Golden Merit Award from the National School Transportation Association
Friends Of America’s Vet Dogs
Chinese Auction Fundraiser April 15
(NSTA) at its annual meeting and convention. Among the highest honors in the school transportation industry, The Golden Merit Award recognizes school transportation professionals for their outstanding achievements in service and safety.
Educational Bus Transportation is a member of The Trans Group, LLC (Spring Valley, NY), which provides transportation to hundreds of thousands of passengers annually in lower New York State and Long Island. With more than 1,400 vehicles and over 2000 employees, The Trans Group is actively involved in the school bus industry on the state and federal level. More information is available at www.thetransgroup.com.

A local volunteer community service group, whose mission is to provide service dogs to assist veterans-in-need, recently donated $12,700 to America’s Vet Dogs – sponsoring two more service dogs.
“Friends of America’s Vet Dogs” started in 2015 and has successfully sponsored 31 highly trained service dogs for veterans since. The group carefully names each dog to honor an unsung hero of our military, to honor someone who brought great credit
recognize someone who significantly helped veterans-in-need.
Their most recent donation enabled the sponsoring of Service Dogs ‘Tammy’ and ‘Kyle’. In 2016 the group sponsored and named Service Dog ‘Sully’, who went on to serve President George W. Bush. ‘Sully’ now continues to serve wounded veterans at Walter Reed Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland.
“Friends of America’s Vet Dogs” will hold their primary annual
through style Chinese Auction, in Sayville on April 15. To support their mission or for information regarding the Chinese Auction event, contact group co-founders Cliff Miller or Patricia Summers at (631) 567-9493 or write to Friends of America’s Vet Dogs, Attention Cliff Miller, PO Box 18, Bohemia, NY 117160018.
