The Ugly Truth

On Wednesday, March 29th, Longwood Central School District in partnership with the Suffolk County Police Department, presented “The Ugly Truth” a program geared to educating the community on the dangers of heroin and prescription drugs.

“The knowledge gained from this informative program better prepares our parents in keeping their children safe and drugfree,” said Superintendent Dr. Michael Lonergan. “I am so pleased that this event was attended by more than 300 parents, students, faculty, and staff, as well as our Board of Education and Central Administration.

Many individuals watched the presentation via livestreaming on the district website. We are grateful that this large turnout

demonstrates how deeply the Longwood community cares about our students.”

Coordinated by Longwood’s Safety Awareness Committee, the event was a testament to the effect that heroin and opioid use is having on communities throughout Suffolk County. During the seminar, representatives from the Suffolk County Police Community Relations Bureau explained how the drug is used, and the various slang terms that are used surrounding its use. The Suffolk County Police Department recommended the immediate disposal of unneeded or unused opioid pills, often prescribed following a significant injury or operation.

At the conclusion of the program, participants were trained to administer

President of Lake Ronkonkoma Heritage Association, Ellyn lives in the family’s homestead built in 1790. Her ties to Lake Ronkonkoma date back six generations. Her love of the town she calls home is very apparent by the many activities she coordinates, landmarks she has declared historic, and the volunteers she recruits to keep the history of Lake Ronkonkoma alive for current and future generations. When asked

why she works so hard with the veterans, fire department and elected officials to accomplish these tasks, Ellyn Okvist’s reply was, “Because this is my town. And I love my town.”

“Ellyn’s knowledge, dedication and commitment to Lake Ronkonkoma is matched by none,” stated Legislator Muratore. “I applaud her efforts and take great pleasure in recognizing her as a ‘Woman of Distinction’ in my district.”

“Family and friends provide the mailing addresses and the packages are shipped to the individual military person,” said, Burner.
